The Talk Show

174: ‘Election Escape Key’, With Special Guest Joanna Stern

00:00:00   I what you want to talk about first [TS]

00:00:01   we've got we don't have too much but i [TS]

00:00:04   think the macbook pros are still [TS]

00:00:05   interesting because i had a show before [TS]

00:00:07   thanksgiving with Jason snail but at the [TS]

00:00:09   time we have recorded that it was sort [TS]

00:00:11   of at the time I like maybe possibly [TS]

00:00:14   early orders were like unboxing their [TS]

00:00:17   macbook pros but at the time it was [TS]

00:00:18   really just people who had the the [TS]

00:00:20   review units who'd had them whereas now [TS]

00:00:22   lots and lots of people have macbook [TS]

00:00:25   pros we have some real world experience [TS]

00:00:27   might as well talk about it first [TS]

00:00:29   yeah and I reached out to that was when [TS]

00:00:31   I know I i really enjoyed your review [TS]

00:00:34   and then let me let me pull up what you [TS]

00:00:36   said about my review and it was it was [TS]

00:00:42   good and I was like I need to come on [TS]

00:00:43   the podcast and defend myself and and [TS]

00:00:49   you know what we are also we can talk [TS]

00:00:51   about i'm going to i decided i'm going [TS]

00:00:52   to put the mic right up against the [TS]

00:00:54   macbook pro keyboard so and even though [TS]

00:00:58   your your your listeners your listeners [TS]

00:01:01   don't like loud sounds [TS]

00:01:02   I can just be typing on my macbook pro [TS]

00:01:04   the entire time and which will annoy [TS]

00:01:05   them or maybe that one into that that is [TS]

00:01:08   a good topic I I'm glad you brought that [TS]

00:01:09   up i would have been furious if if we [TS]

00:01:12   hit stop and we stopped recording and [TS]

00:01:14   never brought up the the sound loud [TS]

00:01:16   keyboards all right what did I say let's [TS]

00:01:19   see i can find it first [TS]

00:01:21   oh so you said I'm so you said very good [TS]

00:01:24   take as usual it felt really good to get [TS]

00:01:26   that and then I i say that it that it's [TS]

00:01:30   baffling let me out quote what I would I [TS]

00:01:32   ruin I said I'm why this isn't available [TS]

00:01:36   and this is the the touch ID isn't [TS]

00:01:38   available on all of apple's macbook [TS]

00:01:40   laptops especially the entry-level [TS]

00:01:42   13-inch no touch bar pro is baffling and [TS]

00:01:45   you said not baffling at all maybe you [TS]

00:01:49   should do it you should read your own [TS]

00:01:50   things like an interactive realize your [TS]

00:01:53   emotions well I should do like your your [TS]

00:01:56   vote what I think is your voice yes yeah [TS]

00:01:58   you should just do my way not to [TS]

00:01:59   baffling at all with Apple you have to [TS]

00:02:02   pay for awesome new stuff that a good [TS]

00:02:06   impression [TS]

00:02:07   that's pretty good [TS]

00:02:08   I think touch ID combined with the [TS]

00:02:11   secure Enclave is so is at least half [TS]

00:02:14   the value of the entire touch bar it's [TS]

00:02:17   funny because I would say it no pun [TS]

00:02:19   intended your impression your impression [TS]

00:02:21   of me is is a little stern it is much [TS]

00:02:25   better than my wife's that my wife's [TS]

00:02:27   impression of me is always sort of that [TS]

00:02:29   I'm like adult who the the girl who [TS]

00:02:32   threw the tooth book that's out there [TS]

00:02:34   that's how many does it does me and it's [TS]

00:02:36   pretty and I i actually just hear your [TS]

00:02:41   voice I don't hear i don't hear what [TS]

00:02:42   every voice I did that was just like a [TS]

00:02:44   this is what that [TS]

00:02:46   yeah a blogger and i'm in a man with the [TS]

00:02:48   computer you know that's what I am job [TS]

00:02:51   in with computers not battling at all [TS]

00:02:55   but you know what at this is exactly [TS]

00:03:00   what I mean that what i mean by that and [TS]

00:03:02   you know it's the format of during [TS]

00:03:03   firewall that I tried to be now I do [TS]

00:03:07   apologize it [TS]

00:03:09   what's that i apologizing for for not [TS]

00:03:12   apologizing but I I sometimes wonder if [TS]

00:03:15   it's too easy to get CZ to be a little [TS]

00:03:18   because I'm so terse sometimes that it's [TS]

00:03:20   you know I that's why I sort of like [TS]

00:03:22   having a podcast on the side is that we [TS]

00:03:24   can go on lengthy digressions over when [TS]

00:03:27   I'm looking at it right now two [TS]

00:03:28   sentences it you know it's when when [TS]

00:03:36   something new comes out like touch ID [TS]

00:03:38   it's only available on the premium price [TS]

00:03:41   models and you have to wait I know and [TS]

00:03:44   I'm sure like a year from now the [TS]

00:03:46   mid-range model will probably be [TS]

00:03:48   upgraded with you know the touch bar I i [TS]

00:03:53   hear that but let's let's think about [TS]

00:03:55   how long I phone owners have had touch [TS]

00:03:57   ID almost i would say now what ninety [TS]

00:04:01   percent of iphone owners have touch ID [TS]

00:04:04   yeah I would think so many how many at [TS]

00:04:07   like we're going back to five hours [TS]

00:04:09   range of right so okay maybe probably [TS]

00:04:14   know I don't know I have the percentages [TS]

00:04:15   you really only applies the percentages [TS]

00:04:17   but that's that's a long time and we've [TS]

00:04:21   all got used [TS]

00:04:22   using it on our iPhone and it's great [TS]

00:04:24   it's it's it's magical [TS]

00:04:26   really you the the fact that you're able [TS]

00:04:29   to do so many things now with your your [TS]

00:04:31   your fingerprint and you don't have to [TS]

00:04:32   punch and passwords it really made lives [TS]

00:04:35   better it makes your life better on the [TS]

00:04:37   macbook pro why can't I do it on a [TS]

00:04:40   macbook why can't I do it on really just [TS]

00:04:44   the macbook because that's really the [TS]

00:04:45   only two new laptops apple has it just [TS]

00:04:50   it kind of makes sense and and on on the [TS]

00:04:52   on the 13-inch no touch bar which is [TS]

00:04:55   supposed to be I think what they thought [TS]

00:04:57   would be a very sort of not entry-level [TS]

00:05:00   for $1,500 obviously but this basic [TS]

00:05:04   model it seems like you could have this [TS]

00:05:06   without the touch bar now I know there's [TS]

00:05:08   a lot of technology that you could get [TS]

00:05:09   that comes along with the touch bar but [TS]

00:05:11   I don't know it just seems like it [TS]

00:05:14   should be there [TS]

00:05:15   my guess is that part of it is product [TS]

00:05:18   marketing it with meaning putting the [TS]

00:05:22   this appealing new feature or only at [TS]

00:05:25   these higher price points what I think [TS]

00:05:27   it's like 1799 for the first one that [TS]

00:05:29   has the touch part yeah 1804 vs 1500 for [TS]

00:05:34   the entry i think i keep saying entry [TS]

00:05:36   level but it's that I guess it is entry [TS]

00:05:38   level for the new yeah pros right then [TS]

00:05:41   and it's you know clearly clearly [TS]

00:05:43   occupies the mid range of the overall [TS]

00:05:45   lineup it is right i would say it is the [TS]

00:05:48   central you know it's the very middle of [TS]

00:05:51   the lineup that right you know combined [TS]

00:05:53   with the high-end regular macbook are [TS]

00:05:57   sort of right there around the same [TS]

00:05:58   price point and it's we know which one [TS]

00:06:00   you want the super thin and light or the [TS]

00:06:01   more powerful one right and i think my [TS]

00:06:05   recommendation I i had i struggled with [TS]

00:06:07   this review more than any review i've [TS]

00:06:09   written in a number of years because to [TS]

00:06:12   me there wasn't a very clear you should [TS]

00:06:14   get this one [TS]

00:06:15   I'm not that I usually tell people you [TS]

00:06:18   should get this one but it that you [TS]

00:06:20   deserve you talk through what you may [TS]

00:06:22   want but it was so complicated and when [TS]

00:06:26   you look at that 13-inch without the [TS]

00:06:28   touch bar without touch ID without the [TS]

00:06:30   extra ports with a slower processor [TS]

00:06:33   but it's like why even though that seems [TS]

00:06:36   like the one you'd want to recommend to [TS]

00:06:38   people right if you don't need the touch [TS]

00:06:39   bar get this one but you but you can't [TS]

00:06:41   really say that because it doesn't have [TS]

00:06:43   touch ID it doesn't have the extra ports [TS]

00:06:45   and you're sort of like in this place we [TS]

00:06:46   like you should pay three hundred [TS]

00:06:48   dollars more to get this other one even [TS]

00:06:51   though you might not use the touch bark [TS]

00:06:54   yeah and if you compare that model the [TS]

00:06:56   new 13-inch yeah I as it's called the [TS]

00:06:59   macbook escape right all right if you [TS]

00:07:02   compare that one to the remaining old [TS]

00:07:06   generation 13-inch macbook pros that [TS]

00:07:08   they're still selling the ones that have [TS]

00:07:11   the SD card slot in it you know the old [TS]

00:07:14   school USB a port [TS]

00:07:17   it's cool that's a tough decision for [TS]

00:07:20   that would be a tough decision even for [TS]

00:07:22   me personally like if I and that was the [TS]

00:07:24   tape that's my entire review right like [TS]

00:07:26   my entire review was there's a new thing [TS]

00:07:30   it's good i I don't I don't think it's [TS]

00:07:33   bad it's very good there's a lot of [TS]

00:07:35   great things in it but there's this old [TS]

00:07:36   thing that is also still really good [TS]

00:07:39   even though it hasn't been updated in [TS]

00:07:41   many years and I don't really know which [TS]

00:07:44   one to tell you to buy so let's just go [TS]

00:07:46   through what's good here what's bad [TS]

00:07:48   there and you decide you know I'm and i [TS]

00:07:51   still like i like i don't even want to [TS]

00:07:53   think about like I'm happy we did this [TS]

00:07:56   podcast like a couple weeks after [TS]

00:07:57   because like my brain hurt from thinking [TS]

00:07:59   about macbooks so much agree it was [TS]

00:08:03   actually great timing was happening [TS]

00:08:05   during the election and it was a good [TS]

00:08:07   escape in a way to escape it is it it [TS]

00:08:10   was the election Escape key that's [TS]

00:08:14   pretty good actually [TS]

00:08:15   is that it was the macbook was the [TS]

00:08:17   escape election Escape key for me you [TS]

00:08:19   know like I i spent a lot of hours like [TS]

00:08:22   being able to think about laptops and [TS]

00:08:24   not being able to not having to think [TS]

00:08:25   about what the disaster that was [TS]

00:08:28   happening everywhere else so i will say [TS]

00:08:31   this I I think you have a very good [TS]

00:08:33   point that maybe it has taken to long [TS]

00:08:35   for touch ID to come two macbooks in [TS]

00:08:38   general that if you know if we had on [TS]

00:08:40   iOS all the way back to the 5s why is [TS]

00:08:43   November 2016 the first time it was [TS]

00:08:45   available for the man [TS]

00:08:46   there i think you have a strong point [TS]

00:08:48   and I can't really refuse it [TS]

00:08:50   it seems to me like if anything more [TS]

00:08:53   proof on the side of right if you had a [TS]

00:08:56   video podcast you'd see me dancing in my [TS]

00:08:58   office right now that iOS is the favored [TS]

00:09:01   child of that Apple and the mac is the [TS]

00:09:05   you know it you know second seattle i [TS]

00:09:09   think that you know you could definitely [TS]

00:09:10   argue that I might even be hard to argue [TS]

00:09:13   otherwise because how long ago was the [TS]

00:09:15   5s last year was the 6 plus 6 6 plus 6 [TS]

00:09:19   ass success [TS]

00:09:21   yes it was the six the year before so [TS]

00:09:23   three years ago was when the 5s was new [TS]

00:09:26   that's pretty well right right for four [TS]

00:09:29   years ago right [TS]

00:09:30   yeah so that's pretty long and I i agree [TS]

00:09:33   with that but i'm not surprised by my [TS]

00:09:35   take is that whenever it did first [TS]

00:09:38   appear on the Mac of course it's going [TS]

00:09:39   to start only at the high end and then [TS]

00:09:41   trickle-down you're a year after year so [TS]

00:09:44   I think you have a good point that maybe [TS]

00:09:46   that first max with touch ID should have [TS]

00:09:48   appeared across the line up at like 18 [TS]

00:09:52   months after the 5s or something like [TS]

00:09:53   that [TS]

00:09:54   yeah and and off and across the line up [TS]

00:09:56   is my well especially when you know but [TS]

00:09:58   across the lineup never wouldn't would [TS]

00:10:00   have wouldn't happen all at once it [TS]

00:10:01   would but but then if it happen right [TS]

00:10:03   right [TS]

00:10:04   if it happened two years ago then by now [TS]

00:10:07   it would be across the line up right [TS]

00:10:09   well or at least why didn't they come [TS]

00:10:11   with the macbook and it was that was in [TS]

00:10:13   my review when I reviewed the macbook [TS]

00:10:14   when it first came out why is this not [TS]

00:10:16   here and why is it still not there right [TS]

00:10:19   yeah it could be i mean it [TS]

00:10:21   maybe it's me and maybe I I would you [TS]

00:10:24   know I people have had it now you're [TS]

00:10:26   like you mentioned beginning the podcast [TS]

00:10:27   people now have had the these new [TS]

00:10:29   macbook pros maybe they aren't finding [TS]

00:10:30   that it's a huge game changer for them [TS]

00:10:32   but I mean I i like it a lot [TS]

00:10:34   you know i'm i'm waiting for the [TS]

00:10:36   dashlane integration but like I I i use [TS]

00:10:40   it i mean i hate typing and passwords [TS]

00:10:44   and I click open and close my laptop [TS]

00:10:46   like all day long [TS]

00:10:47   yeah and it's you know is i have you set [TS]

00:10:50   up the thing where you can login to your [TS]

00:10:52   Mac with your watch [TS]

00:10:53   I haven't I haven't either because i [TS]

00:10:56   went to do it and [TS]

00:10:57   it seems like it was going to take like [TS]

00:10:59   an hour it was just like thing it's like [TS]

00:11:02   you've gotta like turn off the [TS]

00:11:04   two-factor authentication and turn onto [TS]

00:11:07   something else [TS]

00:11:08   authentication and it really seemed like [TS]

00:11:12   more trouble than it was worth [TS]

00:11:15   especially since I don't wear my Apple [TS]

00:11:17   watch all the time and energy just and I [TS]

00:11:19   used couple of different max it's just [TS]

00:11:21   seemed like it was going to be set up on [TS]

00:11:23   this device and a at the same time I [TS]

00:11:26   knew that I'd be testing the touch bar [TS]

00:11:28   one soon enough so it's right I never [TS]

00:11:31   did it and I forget people that it's not [TS]

00:11:33   even that fast if it's not it's cool it [TS]

00:11:36   works but it's not it may not be as fast [TS]

00:11:38   as typing the password that i have in [TS]

00:11:40   muscle memory that you know when I sit [TS]

00:11:42   down but i'll tell you just logging into [TS]

00:11:44   the thing with put your finger up there [TS]

00:11:46   where that yeah just makes sense and [TS]

00:11:49   it's like and it's funny just going back [TS]

00:11:51   to Apple not having put this on laptops [TS]

00:11:54   for years it's like the whole idea of [TS]

00:11:56   fingerprint sensors and technology [TS]

00:11:58   really began on enterprise windows [TS]

00:12:02   laptops right they were terrible [TS]

00:12:04   they were so bad you have to either [TS]

00:12:07   swipe your finger in like the exact [TS]

00:12:09   right direction and even then you get [TS]

00:12:12   through like three different software [TS]

00:12:13   layers that would say like whatever this [TS]

00:12:15   you know whoever was making the the the [TS]

00:12:17   fingerprint sensor would have their [TS]

00:12:20   software then you have Windows software [TS]

00:12:21   and apple just fixed that with the [TS]

00:12:24   iphone right they fixed that would touch [TS]

00:12:26   ID and then the entire android and [TS]

00:12:28   Industry followed suit just like why was [TS]

00:12:32   it never on laptops know so I you know I [TS]

00:12:37   I I don't play I'm not surprised I I [TS]

00:12:43   kind of you know circle back i think [TS]

00:12:46   that i was touched idea come to the [TS]

00:12:48   macbooks earlier i think this is pretty [TS]

00:12:50   late but now that it's here I really [TS]

00:12:52   like it [TS]

00:12:53   I'm not surprised it doesn't go across [TS]

00:12:54   the whole line i do wonder how much [TS]

00:12:57   Apple debated internally whether to [TS]

00:12:58   release that macbook escape at all and [TS]

00:13:02   help but think that that was a [TS]

00:13:03   discussion it just it's what why it's [TS]

00:13:08   it's a weird it's a weird product [TS]

00:13:11   and it's very confusing it i think if [TS]

00:13:14   that product had either been three [TS]

00:13:18   hundred dollars cheaper right let's say [TS]

00:13:21   well then that would be like right up [TS]

00:13:23   against the macbook and that would be [TS]

00:13:24   confusing the whole the whole lineup is [TS]

00:13:28   very confusing to me but I'm not really [TS]

00:13:30   but not the whole lineup is very [TS]

00:13:31   confusing to me with the old models and [TS]

00:13:33   then with that 13 in the new 13-inch no [TS]

00:13:35   touch bar it's very confusing to me but [TS]

00:13:38   why I think if that product didn't exist [TS]

00:13:40   it might be a little bit easier or if [TS]

00:13:42   the price was dropped my guess is that [TS]

00:13:45   it's because they this is my best guess [TS]

00:13:48   is that they clearly for the last few [TS]

00:13:53   years [TS]

00:13:54   quite a few years they don't [TS]

00:13:56   significantly change their mac hardware [TS]

00:14:00   on a regular basis like I think we can [TS]

00:14:03   safely assume that these new macbook [TS]

00:14:05   pros are what the macbook pros are going [TS]

00:14:07   to look like for at least three years [TS]

00:14:09   probably for forever you yeah for a long [TS]

00:14:13   time and at the most the most they might [TS]

00:14:15   do would be add new like anodization [TS]

00:14:18   finishes maybe total and maybe add a [TS]

00:14:21   gold one or something like that or get a [TS]

00:14:23   new version of black or something like [TS]

00:14:24   that right and so I kind of feel that [TS]

00:14:28   that $1,500 macbook escape isn't really [TS]

00:14:33   there to sell in great numbers right now [TS]

00:14:36   but it's there because it'll you know [TS]

00:14:40   six months from now or a year from now [TS]

00:14:41   it will move down you know it'll be [TS]

00:14:44   thirteen hundred dollars instead of [TS]

00:14:46   fifteen hundred dollars a year from now [TS]

00:14:48   and maybe technically unchanged like [TS]

00:14:50   that they'll do great where they don't [TS]

00:14:52   change any of the yes any of the [TS]

00:14:55   internals and eventually it'll be like [TS]

00:14:57   1,200 1,100 dollar macbook with you know [TS]

00:15:01   to us you know what that's a pretty good [TS]

00:15:03   machine for an entry and maybe that is [TS]

00:15:06   the machine that goes to to fill the the [TS]

00:15:09   macbook air void right i mean for now [TS]

00:15:13   the macbook air sticks around apples [TS]

00:15:14   saying it very loud and clear the at the [TS]

00:15:16   macbook air sticks around they know how [TS]

00:15:18   much people love it and we can talk very [TS]

00:15:21   good we could talk about some of us who [TS]

00:15:23   have have considered stocking up [TS]

00:15:25   the macbook air because we think it [TS]

00:15:26   might be taken away at some point but [TS]

00:15:29   maybe that is that's the thought process [TS]

00:15:31   right like if and in my mind right and [TS]

00:15:34   for someone who's constantly asked about [TS]

00:15:36   laptops less less so more you know [TS]

00:15:40   recently but if the no-touch bar 13 inch [TS]

00:15:45   what is the quality escape the macbook [TS]

00:15:47   is macbook pro escape was let's say a [TS]

00:15:50   thousand dollars i think it's gonna be a [TS]

00:15:52   while before it gets a thousand I I [TS]

00:15:54   agree I agree agree but if it was I [TS]

00:15:57   would have it would be a great system [TS]

00:16:00   for students right put aside the dongle [TS]

00:16:03   it situation it would be a good it would [TS]

00:16:07   be great recommendation for students [TS]

00:16:09   right I'm and prices part of it but also [TS]

00:16:11   you all the other things that add to it [TS]

00:16:14   right it would be great if I touch ID so [TS]

00:16:17   okay so let's take it comes down to [TS]

00:16:19   1,200 like you're saying or 1300 i think [TS]

00:16:21   it is a much easier sell than it being [TS]

00:16:25   $1,500 I i also think that it's that the [TS]

00:16:31   touch bar as a whole including you know [TS]

00:16:38   not just the actual display not just the [TS]

00:16:40   touch screen but the touch ID sensor and [TS]

00:16:42   the secure Enclave and the stuff that [TS]

00:16:46   lets that you know it is it you know it [TS]

00:16:49   really is kind of fascinating at a [TS]

00:16:50   meta-level that it really is an iOS [TS]

00:16:53   computer inside and Intel computer you [TS]

00:16:57   know it's a computer and a computer it's [TS]

00:16:59   it's a it's an input device that is [TS]

00:17:02   itself a standalone computer including a [TS]

00:17:04   display i think it is a it really is [TS]

00:17:09   probably a you know 200-250 dollar [TS]

00:17:13   component that the price difference [TS]

00:17:14   between them it is a significant it's [TS]

00:17:19   you know almost certainly we know it's [TS]

00:17:21   way more expensive than the the trackpad [TS]

00:17:23   or the keyboard it's a very expensive [TS]

00:17:25   thing and it's it's not you know it's [TS]

00:17:28   it's a pretty simple explanation why [TS]

00:17:29   they started 18 hundred dollars it's [TS]

00:17:30   because they are you know the ones with [TS]

00:17:32   the touch bar have a very expensive [TS]

00:17:34   component at the top of the keyboard [TS]

00:17:36   totally and I'm and I don't have as big [TS]

00:17:38   of a problem with the eighteen hundred [TS]

00:17:41   dollars starting price on the touch bar [TS]

00:17:42   I mean I i think it's high [TS]

00:17:44   absolutely but when you consider that [TS]

00:17:48   verses thirteen hundred dollar macbook [TS]

00:17:50   old macbook pro where that starts it to [TS]

00:17:55   me that that one in the middle just [TS]

00:17:57   doesn't make sense the escape macbook [TS]

00:17:59   pro I'll hard time recommending i really [TS]

00:18:00   would you know you haven't even the fact [TS]

00:18:02   that it only has two ports instead of [TS]

00:18:04   four right that's the one that if [TS]

00:18:07   there's one thing it as the week's go by [TS]

00:18:09   that irks me the most about that is that [TS]

00:18:13   it doesn't have the USBC port on the [TS]

00:18:16   other side [TS]

00:18:16   yeah at $53 it seems to me I understand [TS]

00:18:20   i really do understand why it doesn't [TS]

00:18:22   have even the touch ID because i think [TS]

00:18:24   that you can't really separate the touch [TS]

00:18:26   ID from the fact that it's this whole [TS]

00:18:28   you know it doesn't make sense to avert [TS]

00:18:29   like that to have touch ID and still [TS]

00:18:31   have to have an iOS device it would just [TS]

00:18:32   be an iOS device without the touchscreen [TS]

00:18:34   but it would still have to have a [TS]

00:18:37   miniature iOS device to have the secure [TS]

00:18:39   Enclave and and all of that I don't [TS]

00:18:41   think it'd be worth it for them to do [TS]

00:18:42   the engineering to make it i think they [TS]

00:18:44   do yeah but silly haha it's for $1,500 [TS]

00:18:50   it's really seems weird to me to cheap [TS]

00:18:52   out on us bc ports right yeah i mean [TS]

00:18:56   like and I mean this i'm in the place [TS]

00:18:58   where I want a new laptop right I've had [TS]

00:19:00   this macbook air for three years now and [TS]

00:19:03   I have like beat it into the ground it's [TS]

00:19:05   a great system could probably you know [TS]

00:19:07   keep going for someone who doesn't do as [TS]

00:19:09   much stuff on their laptop as I do and I [TS]

00:19:12   I don't really know what to get like I [TS]

00:19:14   keep going back and forth between the [TS]

00:19:15   old 13 inch pro and the tech new touch [TS]

00:19:19   bar [TS]

00:19:19   I'm you know and i even had my review [TS]

00:19:21   saying maybe I'm holding out for one of [TS]

00:19:24   these price drops or something but it [TS]

00:19:29   seems like odd to me that i still really [TS]

00:19:31   want a two-year-old computer and part of [TS]

00:19:34   it is the ports like part of it is i [TS]

00:19:36   mean i'm i'm using the mac the new [TS]

00:19:38   macbook pro with touch bar to podcast [TS]

00:19:40   right now and I've got two of the you [TS]

00:19:43   know $40 dongles that besides I've got [TS]

00:19:45   you know though the one with the hdmi [TS]

00:19:47   hooked up to my monitor [TS]

00:19:49   got the my external mic plugged in [TS]

00:19:52   I've got ethernet plugged into the other [TS]

00:19:54   one that doesn't this isn't like a [TS]

00:19:57   typical setup for me but you know that [TS]

00:19:59   could be one of the things you have the [TS]

00:20:02   SD card slot is a thing for me i don't [TS]

00:20:06   know i came here for you to tell me what [TS]

00:20:09   to do [TS]

00:20:10   well it on the other thing I wanted this [TS]

00:20:12   one to mention is that one of my [TS]

00:20:13   favorite things about the new one and [TS]

00:20:15   this is another one of the reasons why [TS]

00:20:17   i'm i'm kind of annoyed that that that [TS]

00:20:19   the macbook escape only as the two ports [TS]

00:20:22   is that one of my favorite things about [TS]

00:20:24   the new thing is that you can plug the [TS]

00:20:25   power on either side and it seems like [TS]

00:20:28   that it's a decent trade off with losing [TS]

00:20:31   magsafe i mean it's it's like i said i [TS]

00:20:34   really miss mag that's a good point but [TS]

00:20:36   being able to plug it in on the right [TS]

00:20:38   side in a lot of cases is really makes [TS]

00:20:41   it a lot more convenient there are [TS]

00:20:43   certain like I i don't know why but i [TS]

00:20:47   always feel like every time I ride the [TS]

00:20:49   acela between philly in New York and I [TS]

00:20:51   if i'm lucky enough to get one of those [TS]

00:20:53   seats with that the table right it's a [TS]

00:20:56   really you've done it right and its [TS]

00:20:58   really really it's you know it's nice to [TS]

00:21:00   have a table but you're facing it i got [TS]

00:21:01   like like a table right for anybody who [TS]

00:21:04   doesn't know the amtrak on the East [TS]

00:21:06   Coast there's there's some seats on the [TS]

00:21:08   acela trains that you faced people on [TS]

00:21:10   the other side and in between you is a [TS]

00:21:12   very narrow table but it's really great [TS]

00:21:15   and if you can get one of those seat and [TS]

00:21:16   I always feel like every time I do that [TS]

00:21:18   I the seat is like means that i have to [TS]

00:21:21   like snake my power cord around people [TS]

00:21:23   right it's 23 you're here like sitting [TS]

00:21:26   left yes I always sitting on the left [TS]

00:21:29   and it would be sit would be do you know [TS]

00:21:30   it's not like wow that really changes my [TS]

00:21:33   life that I have to drag the cable [TS]

00:21:34   around the outside of my computer and [TS]

00:21:35   plug it in but it would sure be a lot [TS]

00:21:37   nicer if I could just have it sneak [TS]

00:21:39   sneak up right next to my lap and just [TS]

00:21:40   plug it in on the right side and that's [TS]

00:21:43   a really good point [TS]

00:21:43   I i thought you know maybe maybe part of [TS]

00:21:45   the reason I've always chosen the left [TS]

00:21:48   side of the bed is because of magsafe [TS]

00:21:53   it's possible right [TS]

00:21:56   what if that's true I don't even think [TS]

00:21:58   about that but people using laptops in [TS]

00:22:00   bed [TS]

00:22:01   it's not my life [TS]

00:22:01   stop in bed like all the time yeah i'm a [TS]

00:22:04   phone I'd iphone in bed all only and [TS]

00:22:06   always [TS]

00:22:07   yeah me too but I like you know from [TS]

00:22:09   writing late at night and I was like I [TS]

00:22:11   don't want to be sitting at my desk or [TS]

00:22:13   I'm if you look at that point the right [TS]

00:22:16   side of the bed people have been screwed [TS]

00:22:18   for forever but in my lat in our last [TS]

00:22:22   two plate two apartments i always have [TS]

00:22:24   to chose the left side now that's very [TS]

00:22:26   selfish of me much [TS]

00:22:29   well might you know my wife doesn't love [TS]

00:22:31   magsafe as much as i do I guess she's [TS]

00:22:36   probably like who cares right right [TS]

00:22:38   and interestingly like you know usually [TS]

00:22:40   you pick based on like which side is [TS]

00:22:41   closest to the bathroom right like that [TS]

00:22:43   that's usually one of the choices at [TS]

00:22:45   least for women but I guess men to men [TS]

00:22:48   and men pee in the middle of the night [TS]

00:22:50   oh yeah that thing all the time I don't [TS]

00:22:52   live with a man so I don't know [TS]

00:22:54   anyway um and so in this apartment i'm [TS]

00:22:58   on the left side and that's not even the [TS]

00:22:59   closest to the bathroom so i think it is [TS]

00:23:02   the answer back safe has determined what [TS]

00:23:04   side of the bed [TS]

00:23:04   nicely done no anyway I still don't know [TS]

00:23:09   what to do I don't know what to do and [TS]

00:23:11   I'm just gonna keep just figuring it out [TS]

00:23:13   and yes we had I had this funny [TS]

00:23:15   conversation on Twitter last night with [TS]

00:23:17   walt mossberg because apparently on his [TS]

00:23:19   podcast he mentioned that he has bought [TS]

00:23:22   and I guess it's a recent it's the [TS]

00:23:25   newest model of the macbook air and he [TS]

00:23:27   has this model in the box unused stored [TS]

00:23:32   in his house till his current one stops [TS]

00:23:36   working because he's worried apples [TS]

00:23:37   going to discontinue it [TS]

00:23:39   this is this is the thing he's [TS]

00:23:41   stockpiling and saving up for doomsday [TS]

00:23:44   of the macbook air and I have agreed [TS]

00:23:47   with some hearing you're like that's a [TS]

00:23:49   crazy i think that's really the genius [TS]

00:23:51   idea like so it's like you've got like [TS]

00:23:54   it's like my 2k shelter you got like you [TS]

00:23:56   know a bunch of canned food I like what [TS]

00:24:01   I'm one of those people that like if I [TS]

00:24:02   have a shirt or something that i love i [TS]

00:24:05   have i will buy a couple of of out ya [TS]

00:24:08   bye bye bye a couple versions of the [TS]

00:24:10   shirt i'll buy like i do that i do that [TS]

00:24:13   and so I just never really [TS]

00:24:15   thought about doing it for tech in a way [TS]

00:24:17   especially not a laptop that cost over [TS]

00:24:22   $3,000 I don't really have that kind of [TS]

00:24:25   money where I want to just like saving [TS]

00:24:27   why I was a dollar laptop in my closet [TS]

00:24:28   to be honest i chimed in on Twitter and [TS]

00:24:32   I was like you guys are nuts because I i [TS]

00:24:34   can't i can't imagine acurite you really [TS]

00:24:38   are we are [TS]

00:24:38   I cannot retina screen it looks terrible [TS]

00:24:41   event Thompson my friend of the show [TS]

00:24:42   sometimes guess Ben Thompson had the [TS]

00:24:45   same feelings where he felt like I don't [TS]

00:24:49   put words in his mouth but more or less [TS]

00:24:50   that the the nice things about the [TS]

00:24:52   macbook air that you like the keyboard [TS]

00:24:53   you like the thinnest like the weight [TS]

00:24:55   you like having a couple of those [TS]

00:24:57   different ports he bought 12 I like I'm [TS]

00:25:00   gonna buy one while it's still available [TS]

00:25:02   open it up looked at the screen door [TS]

00:25:05   closed it packed it back up and send it [TS]

00:25:07   back to apple because he had forgotten [TS]

00:25:09   just how crude the non retina displays [TS]

00:25:12   are I can't see what there is that is [TS]

00:25:15   appealing about the macbook air other [TS]

00:25:16   than the price and I know that it's not [TS]

00:25:19   like you and Walt are are you know [TS]

00:25:21   limited $2,000 I don't stand right here [TS]

00:25:23   that anymore i see no appeal to the [TS]

00:25:25   current macbook air other than price I'd [TS]

00:25:28   not 00 again really wanted to stockpile [TS]

00:25:32   something if the ports were what's [TS]

00:25:33   important to you why not get the 13-inch [TS]

00:25:36   grabbed 13 inch yeah and that's I mean [TS]

00:25:38   that's what I've said and I mean I [TS]

00:25:40   totally agree i'm not buying another air [TS]

00:25:41   but i love this laptop I just like have [TS]

00:25:47   a special place in my heart for this [TS]

00:25:49   laptop and that's like why I guess they [TS]

00:25:52   said like I came back to this laptop [TS]

00:25:54   after two weeks and I was like I could [TS]

00:25:56   work with this [TS]

00:25:57   yeah I'm not like yes the screen is [TS]

00:25:59   definitely this big jar adjustment back [TS]

00:26:01   to basically seeing pixels all the time [TS]

00:26:04   but I just I just love it just feels [TS]

00:26:08   like home you know [TS]

00:26:09   alright I'm going to think maybe maybe a [TS]

00:26:12   little bit more time at the macbook pro [TS]

00:26:13   and I could feel a little bit at home I [TS]

00:26:15   won't take a break but when we come back [TS]

00:26:16   we should talk about the the keyboard [TS]

00:26:20   yeah remind me [TS]

00:26:22   I just be typing loudly here during your [TS]

00:26:24   first sponsor is a i love this company [TS]

00:26:27   and I love their product it's 0 te R 0 0 [TS]

00:26:32   makes the Wi-Fi routers little little [TS]

00:26:37   hockey puck things and they're brand new [TS]

00:26:40   and it's a totally different model it is [TS]

00:26:44   this is this is a totally different [TS]

00:26:46   system into distributed system they [TS]

00:26:49   really only make one one type of device [TS]

00:26:51   typically you what you do those you get [TS]

00:26:53   a couple of them to place them around [TS]

00:26:55   your house your apartment and they [TS]

00:26:57   create a distributed system to fill your [TS]

00:27:01   whole house with Wi-Fi having just one [TS]

00:27:03   router somewhere probably in your living [TS]

00:27:05   room really doesn't work for multi-room [TS]

00:27:09   homes its if you ever if you've got any [TS]

00:27:13   spots in your house like a bedroom two [TS]

00:27:15   floors up which is what I've got that [TS]

00:27:16   gets yeah i kinda like yeah I got Wi-Fi [TS]

00:27:19   but it's like nowhere near as good as it [TS]

00:27:21   is downstairs hero solves that problem [TS]

00:27:23   and they do it painlessly kind of right [TS]

00:27:28   on time with rumors that apple is [TS]

00:27:31   getting out of the airport business and [TS]

00:27:33   they haven't updated their airport [TS]

00:27:34   routers and years anyway I have a friend [TS]

00:27:38   this is anecdotal obviously your mileage [TS]

00:27:40   may vary i can't guarantee i have a [TS]

00:27:41   friend good friend technically very very [TS]

00:27:46   adept who just replaced the airport [TS]

00:27:50   routers in this house with Nero system [TS]

00:27:52   and the first thing he noticed when he [TS]

00:27:54   was doing testing was that is upstream [TS]

00:27:56   bandwidth went from 8 to 24 megabits per [TS]

00:27:59   second and he was under the impression [TS]

00:28:01   that eight megabits per second was what [TS]

00:28:03   he was capped at by comcast he had no [TS]

00:28:05   idea that there was even more upstream [TS]

00:28:07   bandwidth to have it tripled by [TS]

00:28:09   switching to ero it could not be an [TS]

00:28:14   easier less technical product to set up [TS]

00:28:17   this isn't like getting like enterprise [TS]

00:28:20   stuff that you've got to configure in an [TS]

00:28:23   enterprise you have to sort of put on a [TS]

00:28:24   network administrator hat [TS]

00:28:26   to set up no you just get these little [TS]

00:28:28   punks they're all the same [TS]

00:28:30   there's not like you have one that's the [TS]

00:28:31   home one and then you get these little [TS]

00:28:33   satellite ones you get like a 3-pack you [TS]

00:28:35   can make anyone [TS]

00:28:36   the main one and put it in where you [TS]

00:28:38   connect it to your cable modem and then [TS]

00:28:40   you just take the other two and put them [TS]

00:28:41   around the house for you you know [TS]

00:28:43   they're all the same [TS]

00:28:44   they're very very nicely designed they [TS]

00:28:46   quite frankly look a lot like Apple [TS]

00:28:48   products they're just very very elegant [TS]

00:28:50   little pucks and I would i bought I [TS]

00:28:54   bought the three set for my new [TS]

00:28:55   apartment I'm sorry about the to set for [TS]

00:28:57   my new apartment and I was going to say [TS]

00:28:59   the same thing it just feels like the [TS]

00:29:02   whole experience feels even simpler than [TS]

00:29:05   setting up the airport and and it you [TS]

00:29:08   just wonder like why is Apple why I mean [TS]

00:29:11   I that's a whole other we've seen this [TS]

00:29:13   in Connecticut we can roll the sponsors [TS]

00:29:15   thing right into an editorial this [TS]

00:29:16   really cut because i love we at 0 is it [TS]

00:29:19   like the top of our holiday gift guide [TS]

00:29:21   lists like it sounds like such a weird [TS]

00:29:23   thing but like you should get someone a [TS]

00:29:25   router like it sounds like Superbad and [TS]

00:29:28   0 does not pay me anyone who's listening [TS]

00:29:29   to this 0 absolutely does not pay me I [TS]

00:29:32   never reviewed the eros my my partner [TS]

00:29:34   jeff fowler did it here but I bought [TS]

00:29:36   them and and i'm in love with it [TS]

00:29:39   well it's a great product they recommend [TS]

00:29:42   one for every thousand square feet their [TS]

00:29:44   default pack is a 3-pack that's what i [TS]

00:29:46   have i forget how many square feet my [TS]

00:29:48   houses but it's probably a little more [TS]

00:29:50   than a thousand but it's it's absolutely [TS]

00:29:52   the 3-pack fills it up if you're lucky [TS]

00:29:55   enough this is the right out of their [TS]

00:29:56   talking points if you're lucky you have [TS]

00:29:58   to learn mansion you can add additional [TS]

00:30:00   eros up to 10 in total you can figure [TS]

00:30:03   the thing with a really nice iOS app so [TS]

00:30:06   it's right there on your iPhone and it's [TS]

00:30:07   not like you gotta log into like a [TS]

00:30:09   bizarre thing on a web browser that's [TS]

00:30:11   running on port 80 on the euro just that [TS]

00:30:13   nice little iphone app I just hook them [TS]

00:30:17   up connect them once you've actually [TS]

00:30:19   plug them into power you've done most of [TS]

00:30:20   the work [TS]

00:30:21   it's really it's it could not be if you [TS]

00:30:23   have an old Wi-Fi setup in your house [TS]

00:30:26   you're going to get better performance [TS]

00:30:26   out of a narrow so what do you do to [TS]

00:30:28   find out more you go to the wall street [TS]

00:30:32   journal you currently have a journal and [TS]

00:30:34   read the review just to double check [TS]

00:30:35   that I'm not full of it [TS]

00:30:37   I know just go to really nice thing [TS]

00:30:39   about that the wife of the app by the [TS]

00:30:40   way is that you can like keep speed [TS]

00:30:42   testing and sometimes it's like it does [TS]

00:30:44   the speed tests for you have you do it [TS]

00:30:48   so I like the process with checking with [TS]

00:30:49   this being tests are in my in my house [TS]

00:30:51   like the last like the last speed test [TS]

00:30:53   it did was yesterday and one connected [TS]

00:30:56   let you know whether hey maybe we should [TS]

00:30:58   jiggle some of the settings because it's [TS]

00:31:00   you know you're getting worse [TS]

00:31:01   performance and you were a month ago or [TS]

00:31:02   something like that it's just that it [TS]

00:31:05   really is quite frankly an apple-like [TS]

00:31:06   experience [TS]

00:31:07   oh yeah you don't have to understand it [TS]

00:31:09   to know how it works just follow these [TS]

00:31:11   simple instructions instructions and it [TS]

00:31:12   just works and it looks nice and etc etc [TS]

00:31:15   so anyway what do you do to get more to [TS]

00:31:17   get these things go to ero calm and at [TS]

00:31:21   checkout select overnight shipping and [TS]

00:31:24   enter the code the talk show and that [TS]

00:31:27   shipping will be free so as you're [TS]

00:31:29   listening to this depending on the time [TS]

00:31:31   of day you can have these zeros in your [TS]

00:31:34   hands tomorrow with no charge for that [TS]

00:31:36   overnight shipping with that code the [TS]

00:31:39   talk show my thanks to ero really I i am [TS]

00:31:42   getting paid to say this but I really do [TS]

00:31:44   that I've got him set up in the house [TS]

00:31:46   and it's it's it's better Wi-Fi network [TS]

00:31:48   it really is and I'm not getting paid to [TS]

00:31:50   say any of this [TS]

00:31:52   not even not even my impression of John [TS]

00:31:56   group or do I get paid you know what I [TS]

00:31:59   thought I thought when that story I'd [TS]

00:32:00   end of the sponsorship we're done thanks [TS]

00:32:02   to your I thought when that news came [TS]

00:32:04   out that is German had the report that [TS]

00:32:08   Apple is getting out of the airport base [TS]

00:32:11   station business whether or not I've [TS]

00:32:13   heard this is sort of conflicting things [TS]

00:32:15   about that the you know more or less i [TS]

00:32:19   did the thing i've heard is what I often [TS]

00:32:21   hear with German stories about Apple [TS]

00:32:22   which is not that he's wrong about that [TS]

00:32:24   anything he wrote was wrong but that he [TS]

00:32:26   only has party is starting as part of [TS]

00:32:28   the story with yeah that's the nightmare [TS]

00:32:30   for adding journalist right and that [TS]

00:32:33   when the other parts of the story come [TS]

00:32:35   out it might make what he wrote more [TS]

00:32:37   sense [TS]

00:32:37   yeah but also maybe you know not look [TS]

00:32:41   good now i don't know this is just pure [TS]

00:32:42   speculation pure speculation [TS]

00:32:44   this is not anything I've heard but at [TS]

00:32:47   for example one way that he could only [TS]

00:32:49   have part of the story right would be if [TS]

00:32:51   app [TS]

00:32:51   all comes out with one of these in a [TS]

00:32:54   bear's alexa type yeah speaker type [TS]

00:32:57   systems like Syria in a box and the [TS]

00:33:00   Syrian a box also act as a Wi-Fi base [TS]

00:33:04   station [TS]

00:33:05   it does seem weird to me and i know i [TS]

00:33:08   said we'll get back to the macbook [TS]

00:33:09   keyboard but it now I like a resistible [TS]

00:33:12   it really does seem weird to me because [TS]

00:33:14   this this this story about Apple getting [TS]

00:33:16   out of the router business [TS]

00:33:19   it does seem weird to me because the [TS]

00:33:22   Apple idea is if you just stick with [TS]

00:33:25   apple stuff you're probably going to pay [TS]

00:33:27   more you know forex like and let's say x [TS]

00:33:31   is a Wi-Fi base station right that [TS]

00:33:34   Apple's base stations cost more than [TS]

00:33:36   just about any other most other consumer [TS]

00:33:40   base stations but that that the appeal [TS]

00:33:43   of it is if you stick with the apple [TS]

00:33:44   stuff it'll all just work and it'll be a [TS]

00:33:46   lot less hassle to set up and a lot less [TS]

00:33:48   hassle to keep it going and that is in [TS]

00:33:51   my experience largely true and to that [TS]

00:33:55   point right [TS]

00:33:56   the home if that is the next major one [TS]

00:34:00   of the next major battle grounds in tech [TS]

00:34:02   which it clearly seems to be with these [TS]

00:34:04   talking speakers that are all about [TS]

00:34:05   being home and if you look at google [TS]

00:34:07   strategy there as well [TS]

00:34:09   Wi-Fi and helping control that part of [TS]

00:34:11   the equation seems pretty essential [TS]

00:34:14   especially when you talk about smart [TS]

00:34:16   home stuff right it's all on the same [TS]

00:34:18   network [TS]

00:34:19   yeah I'm you know there's the there's [TS]

00:34:21   the privacy of the variables the [TS]

00:34:23   security of the network but there's also [TS]

00:34:24   the management of the network and that's [TS]

00:34:26   one thing that people to have seemed to [TS]

00:34:28   always loved about the airport i [TS]

00:34:29   actually never had one which is just how [TS]

00:34:31   simple it is to manage it is that yeah [TS]

00:34:35   that's what is the reason i've i've [TS]

00:34:36   always had them and I've always known [TS]

00:34:38   that i'm not getting or at least for a [TS]

00:34:40   couple of years now I've known that i'm [TS]

00:34:41   not getting the absolute best [TS]

00:34:43   performance and one reason i justified [TS]

00:34:46   that is I just know that that comcast [TS]

00:34:49   service we have at the house isn't that [TS]

00:34:51   great anyway like yeah and we're [TS]

00:34:52   thinking about moving and it's all just [TS]

00:34:54   sort of been when we move this in the [TS]

00:34:57   back of my mind if that when we move i'm [TS]

00:34:59   going to deal with comcast bite the [TS]

00:35:02   bullet [TS]

00:35:02   and we have to get the best comcast [TS]

00:35:04   service i possibly can and then i'll [TS]

00:35:06   figure out you know get a Wi-Fi setup [TS]

00:35:08   that takes advantage of it but it just [TS]

00:35:11   seems weird for me to app for Apple to [TS]

00:35:13   exit that because it doesn't it just [TS]

00:35:14   seems like there once they start making [TS]

00:35:20   it easy to say well you know i'm not [TS]

00:35:22   going to buy an Apple blank then you [TS]

00:35:23   started saying I'm not gonna buy an [TS]

00:35:25   Apple blank for other things to write [TS]

00:35:28   that being able to have like hey all of [TS]

00:35:30   my stuff is apple stuff makes it easy to [TS]

00:35:33   just say well I'm just gonna buy another [TS]

00:35:34   apple thing because i know it's just [TS]

00:35:36   gonna work right and that's definitely i [TS]

00:35:39   like your theory about whatever the you [TS]

00:35:43   know if they get into this talking [TS]

00:35:44   speaker race which seems like they've [TS]

00:35:47   got you write that that that device is [TS]

00:35:53   so core to the home it I i think this [TS]

00:35:57   theory of it maybe possibly doing [TS]

00:35:59   something with the with a network could [TS]

00:36:01   make sense yeah yeah i mean the way to [TS]

00:36:05   the end and that's it that's the other [TS]

00:36:07   top thing that we have on our holiday [TS]

00:36:08   thing which is the which is the the echo [TS]

00:36:11   and you know amazon now that you want [TS]

00:36:14   another one of Germans reports is that [TS]

00:36:16   they'll have some sort of tablet version [TS]

00:36:19   of the of the echo in the next couple of [TS]

00:36:21   whatever next couple months are early in [TS]

00:36:24   the next year I'm and that makes you [TS]

00:36:27   wonder you know okay [TS]

00:36:28   is that because people are then jumping [TS]

00:36:30   on their phones or tablets to go finish [TS]

00:36:33   up a task or whatever it is and in many [TS]

00:36:35   cases that's probably an iphone or [TS]

00:36:37   that's probably an iPad and Apple [TS]

00:36:41   already controls that other part of the [TS]

00:36:43   experience in the home I'd so that's the [TS]

00:36:46   if i'm remembering correctly Germans [TS]

00:36:50   report that this could just came out the [TS]

00:36:52   other day and it was interesting to me [TS]

00:36:54   at a meta-level because i like i like [TS]

00:36:56   Mark a lot and now that he's at [TS]

00:36:58   Bloomberg and these you know is so young [TS]

00:37:03   is just getting started [TS]

00:37:04   I thought what if when he took that job [TS]

00:37:06   at Bloomberg my guess was he's going to [TS]

00:37:09   expand beyond apple because he just [TS]

00:37:12   seemed inevitable it doesn't seem too [TS]

00:37:14   justified to have just apple an apple [TS]

00:37:16   rumors guy edit at a publication is wide [TS]

00:37:20   wide that covers is why did you know the [TS]

00:37:23   entire industry like Bloomberg and here [TS]

00:37:25   you go he's got a scoop of you know just [TS]

00:37:27   like the scoops he typically gets on [TS]

00:37:28   Apple upcoming stuff he's got one on [TS]

00:37:30   amazon product the just a bit though is [TS]

00:37:34   that it he like a 7-inch display built [TS]

00:37:37   into a speaker [TS]

00:37:38   I don't know and and I do think it's in [TS]

00:37:40   some ways it is obviously competitive [TS]

00:37:42   with tablets where you could just why [TS]

00:37:44   not just you know put say an ipad pro in [TS]

00:37:47   your kitchen and I've prop it up and the [TS]

00:37:50   ipad pro as you know beefed up its [TS]

00:37:53   speakers significantly compared to the [TS]

00:37:55   pre pro iPads means probably not as good [TS]

00:37:57   as a standalone speaker system but one [TS]

00:38:00   of the other things that government has [TS]

00:38:02   report is that this new echo is going to [TS]

00:38:05   have better speakers anyway because [TS]

00:38:06   that's sort of the complaint people have [TS]

00:38:08   about Gredenko is that the speakers [TS]

00:38:10   aren't that great [TS]

00:38:11   they're they're good for like a novelty [TS]

00:38:13   device if you think like oh my god [TS]

00:38:14   damned I'm talking to a black cylinder [TS]

00:38:16   this is amazing [TS]

00:38:17   the speakers are great but then if you [TS]

00:38:19   start listening to like music coming out [TS]

00:38:21   of it and you really just judge it as [TS]

00:38:23   like speakers for playing music it's [TS]

00:38:26   like a it's kinda right you know it so [TS]

00:38:29   you can get a better probably speaker in [TS]

00:38:31   that price range or well they dropped [TS]

00:38:34   the price is significantly right i mean [TS]

00:38:35   I so yeah I i love the echo I'm you know [TS]

00:38:39   it i did the review of the echo and the [TS]

00:38:41   home a couple of weeks ago and you know [TS]

00:38:43   even preferred it to to Google's product [TS]

00:38:45   and speaking of Google's also doing a [TS]

00:38:47   nero competitor right they've got this [TS]

00:38:49   new google Wi-Fi which I don't think has [TS]

00:38:52   actually come out yet I don't think [TS]

00:38:53   sorry that i haven't I think it was [TS]

00:38:55   supposed to but I don't think it has [TS]

00:38:56   yeah they haven't sent review units and [TS]

00:38:58   they were going to and you know so it's [TS]

00:39:01   all this fight of these ecosystems are [TS]

00:39:03   these companies trying to control the [TS]

00:39:05   ecosystems we live in especially in our [TS]

00:39:07   homes now so that you have the Wi-Fi [TS]

00:39:09   thing is interesting i but it makes me [TS]

00:39:12   wonder you know and you know and again [TS]

00:39:15   government's report wasn't that specific [TS]

00:39:17   but what would be the advantage of a a [TS]

00:39:22   echo which with like a physical thing [TS]

00:39:24   that has to be plugged in and is not [TS]

00:39:26   itself a tablet you know it [TS]

00:39:28   more of whether it's still a cylinder or [TS]

00:39:30   whether it's a rectangle now because it [TS]

00:39:31   has a display but having a built-in [TS]

00:39:32   display what would be the advantage of [TS]

00:39:34   that versus a a device let's just say I [TS]

00:39:41   mean if Apple made one but that also [TS]

00:39:43   could serve as an ipad dock and then [TS]

00:39:46   just use the iPad as the display [TS]

00:39:49   yeah I mean I i would assume that [TS]

00:39:51   Amazon's thinking is that people start [TS]

00:39:53   something on the echo right and like I [TS]

00:39:56   just talked to my experience i'll start [TS]

00:39:57   something on the echo and then realize [TS]

00:39:58   okay i actually need more information [TS]

00:40:00   right and so that I always have my phone [TS]

00:40:03   i usually have my iphone in the kitchen [TS]

00:40:05   and so I end up just sort of pulling [TS]

00:40:08   that out and going and doing whatever [TS]

00:40:09   i'm not doing that in the alexa app and [TS]

00:40:11   i'm usually not even doing that at all [TS]

00:40:13   with Amazon's assistance whether it's [TS]

00:40:15   you know searching for something or you [TS]

00:40:18   know now the new recipe functions things [TS]

00:40:20   like that i would assume this is more of [TS]

00:40:22   a ploy to keep people in you know an [TS]

00:40:25   amazon world but also you know try and [TS]

00:40:28   move them away from using their their [TS]

00:40:31   phones [TS]

00:40:31   I don't know well I the other thing that [TS]

00:40:33   occurs to me is and i forget if the word [TS]

00:40:35   kitchen appeared in government reporter [TS]

00:40:37   not did it or are people just [TS]

00:40:39   speculating that this is more of a [TS]

00:40:40   kitchen optimized device so i know i've [TS]

00:40:42   seen people saying that the echo is [TS]

00:40:44   meant to go anywhere and some people [TS]

00:40:46   have in their bedroom and some people in [TS]

00:40:47   their living room and lots of people [TS]

00:40:49   including me have one in the kitchen but [TS]

00:40:51   this this new device with the display is [TS]

00:40:53   sort of specifically meant for the [TS]

00:40:55   kitchen and I can think of a couple of [TS]

00:40:56   reasons why you definitely want to [TS]

00:40:57   display one of them would be recipes [TS]

00:41:00   right if you're doing something you know [TS]

00:41:02   if you're cooking in the kitchen I not [TS]

00:41:06   having a display is almost worthless [TS]

00:41:08   right it's like who you know it [TS]

00:41:10   nobody's going to do a recipe by audio [TS]

00:41:13   right because you did he'd have to keep [TS]

00:41:15   repeating all right how much of this how [TS]

00:41:17   much that the new there's a new [TS]

00:41:19   allrecipes at for the echo and it does [TS]

00:41:22   read out some of the the instructions [TS]

00:41:24   well I just think though that no but as [TS]

00:41:26   a thing to depend on I totally great [TS]

00:41:28   again that that's usually what i end up [TS]

00:41:30   you know pulling up my phone for which [TS]

00:41:31   is you know some recipe or something [TS]

00:41:33   like that [TS]

00:41:34   well and the other thing that's very [TS]

00:41:35   obvious and a lot of people for a long [TS]

00:41:37   time have had TVs in their kitchen you [TS]

00:41:39   know like many tvs I couldn't [TS]

00:41:41   when I was here they invented little [TS]

00:41:43   like eight inch tvs that some people put [TS]

00:41:45   their TVs and I thought that was amazing [TS]

00:41:46   and I wanted my parents to get one and [TS]

00:41:48   they were like no yeah but it's obvious [TS]

00:41:53   you know and for as much as there's tons [TS]

00:41:55   of audio stuff that you can listen to it [TS]

00:41:58   you know like podcasts [TS]

00:42:01   there's also a lot of people like video [TS]

00:42:04   and a lot of people like to watch video [TS]

00:42:05   and guess what amazon has a giant video [TS]

00:42:08   service that was very you know it to me [TS]

00:42:12   it's very obvious why they might want to [TS]

00:42:13   have a display on the thing in the [TS]

00:42:14   kitchen because it'd be like you just [TS]

00:42:16   tell tell it you know to play something [TS]

00:42:18   from amazon prime video and there you [TS]

00:42:20   are watching it [TS]

00:42:21   yeah and I mean like a part of what [TS]

00:42:24   amazon also wants you to do is buy more [TS]

00:42:26   things on amazon and it's very simple [TS]

00:42:29   now but there are a lot of times where [TS]

00:42:31   I'm like oh you know and uh I'll say [TS]

00:42:33   alexa you add paper towels to my car or [TS]

00:42:36   whatever and it usually tries to [TS]

00:42:39   remember you will pick what I've ordered [TS]

00:42:40   before but like having a visual [TS]

00:42:43   indication of what that is or what I've [TS]

00:42:45   just ordered or added is is helpful like [TS]

00:42:48   I never really complete the order on the [TS]

00:42:50   echo I always end up going to my you [TS]

00:42:53   know my card on my laptop or on my on my [TS]

00:42:56   phone because you have more confident if [TS]

00:42:58   you see it yeah yeah I'm like oh yeah [TS]

00:43:00   that's the one you know I'm having so [TS]

00:43:04   it's just it you have to wonder what [TS]

00:43:08   would have happened if Amazon it [TS]

00:43:09   actually had a successful phone years [TS]

00:43:11   back if if they really i mean i-i think [TS]

00:43:14   honestly idea it's hard to see that the [TS]

00:43:16   echo would have come through in the way [TS]

00:43:18   it has if they had had a successful [TS]

00:43:20   phone [TS]

00:43:21   it almost feels like that them not [TS]

00:43:24   having control of the phone and not [TS]

00:43:25   having a strong presence in people's [TS]

00:43:27   mobile lives allowed them to create [TS]

00:43:30   something that was outside of the phone [TS]

00:43:32   right i think so i definitely think it [TS]

00:43:34   helped them because it's it was sort of [TS]

00:43:37   writing the failure of the fire phone [TS]

00:43:39   was sort of freeing for them and I think [TS]

00:43:40   the timing of the stuff that they've [TS]

00:43:42   done since it's sort of you know it's [TS]

00:43:44   sort of adds up that from the point [TS]

00:43:47   where they gave up on the fire [TS]

00:43:48   they've fire phone at least they have [TS]

00:43:51   you know you know it's [TS]

00:43:54   some measure or not I mean with as with [TS]

00:43:56   all amazon products who the hell knows [TS]

00:43:57   how many they've actually sold because [TS]

00:43:59   they won't they won't tell you but it [TS]

00:44:01   certainly seems with the echo that they [TS]

00:44:02   have some measure of a hit on their [TS]

00:44:04   hands [TS]

00:44:05   yeah I definitely think that I think [TS]

00:44:08   this holiday that guy even though the [TS]

00:44:10   echoes now to almost two years old it'll [TS]

00:44:12   be two years old in January which is why [TS]

00:44:14   I think this new rumor makes a lot of [TS]

00:44:16   sense i think you know it's probably [TS]

00:44:18   primed for early next year i think this [TS]

00:44:21   is the first time that I confidently I'm [TS]

00:44:24   yeah it really is the first time I've [TS]

00:44:25   confidently recommend it to most people [TS]

00:44:28   you know i'm i'm buying one for my [TS]

00:44:29   parents they just made it they just [TS]

00:44:30   built a new house and I just think it's [TS]

00:44:32   perfect for the kitchen that they they [TS]

00:44:33   made you know people for for holiday [TS]

00:44:36   I've just said you this is now like now [TS]

00:44:39   is the time to get one of these that [TS]

00:44:40   there's there's a just that the response [TS]

00:44:43   time is better the her answers Alexis [TS]

00:44:46   answers are mostly on on point and [TS]

00:44:50   compared to especially compared to [TS]

00:44:52   people's experiences with Siri you know [TS]

00:44:53   you really do get this feeling like [TS]

00:44:55   people are are sort of like they gave [TS]

00:44:57   Syria chance and then they say stop [TS]

00:44:59   giving Syria chance i think that and [TS]

00:45:01   I've said for for a number of months and [TS]

00:45:03   almost years now that's apples biggest [TS]

00:45:04   hurdle with Siri is getting the people [TS]

00:45:07   even even as Syria improves it's hard to [TS]

00:45:10   get people to go back and try and use [TS]

00:45:11   Siri for things [TS]

00:45:12   yeah but with alexa right out-of-the-box [TS]

00:45:14   your you have this really strong [TS]

00:45:16   experience you know the response times [TS]

00:45:18   the answers are right there's not a lot [TS]

00:45:20   of I'm sorry have to search the web for [TS]

00:45:22   that so i think it's going to get more [TS]

00:45:26   and more people comfortable talking to [TS]

00:45:28   two gadgets [TS]

00:45:29   yeah yeah i totally agree and I've said [TS]

00:45:33   that to that the single biggest problem [TS]

00:45:35   apple has with serious getting people [TS]

00:45:36   who felt burned by it to try it again [TS]

00:45:38   that the first impressions mean so much [TS]

00:45:40   and the first impression that people [TS]

00:45:42   have with Siri it was so bad for so many [TS]

00:45:48   people that and it was for a while that [TS]

00:45:50   they don't they've just given up on i [TS]

00:45:53   think the same thing was true going back [TS]

00:45:54   you know very long time and it doesn't [TS]

00:45:58   matter because it was such a niche [TS]

00:46:00   product but the Newton's handwriting was [TS]

00:46:01   the same way at the end of the Newton's [TS]

00:46:03   lifespan the handwriting recognition was [TS]

00:46:05   excellent it really was and [TS]

00:46:07   but we were almost nobody remembers that [TS]

00:46:08   everybody remembers that part of the [TS]

00:46:10   reason why the Newton failed was that [TS]

00:46:12   the handwriting recognition was so bad [TS]

00:46:13   because it was bad when they first [TS]

00:46:15   shipped it and everybody was like this [TS]

00:46:17   is amazing a little thing that little [TS]

00:46:18   computer I can you know almost putting a [TS]

00:46:20   pocket and i can write on it and you [TS]

00:46:22   know i got everything wrong at the end [TS]

00:46:24   of the lifespan [TS]

00:46:24   it was amazing but it was too late [TS]

00:46:26   everybody had filed Newton's handwriting [TS]

00:46:27   recognition under terrible it's really [TS]

00:46:31   it's really interesting it's something [TS]

00:46:32   I've been thinking about lately which is [TS]

00:46:34   that it were an early adopters are in [TS]

00:46:37   many of your listeners are early [TS]

00:46:39   adopters and so everyone tries all the [TS]

00:46:40   stuff that's brand-new and in the case [TS]

00:46:44   of what's been going on with with [TS]

00:46:46   technology over the last couple of years [TS]

00:46:47   it's like people companies and apple [TS]

00:46:50   more so than ever I think before release [TS]

00:46:52   is something that might not quite be [TS]

00:46:54   done and gets better over time [TS]

00:46:57   right especially now in terms of [TS]

00:46:59   software because softwares so much of [TS]

00:47:01   the experience like the Apple watch is [TS]

00:47:03   the best example I think certainly the [TS]

00:47:05   new version is faster because there's a [TS]

00:47:08   better processor and it's waterproof and [TS]

00:47:10   there's all these fancy things but you [TS]

00:47:12   know there's really an argument we made [TS]

00:47:13   it was better if you waited a year right [TS]

00:47:15   it was really better if you waited or [TS]

00:47:18   even if you waited and bought the old [TS]

00:47:19   144 cheaper price because the software [TS]

00:47:22   got so much better it's the same thing [TS]

00:47:25   with the echo and it's really the same [TS]

00:47:28   thing with serial number of these things [TS]

00:47:29   but it there's this fear it there's this [TS]

00:47:33   problem with people are early adopters [TS]

00:47:34   and get a bad get that really bad taste [TS]

00:47:37   in their mouth and then they just say [TS]

00:47:38   this thing socks and then they put it [TS]

00:47:40   away and they don't know sort of keep at [TS]

00:47:42   it right so it's like almost it's like [TS]

00:47:44   it's a good time to be an early adopter [TS]

00:47:45   but it's also a really terrible time to [TS]

00:47:48   be an early adopter a lot of thoughts [TS]

00:47:53   let's talk about the new macbook pro [TS]

00:47:55   keyboard the poor new macbook pro [TS]

00:47:59   keyboard but first it's a good time to [TS]

00:48:01   take a break i'll take a break and and [TS]

00:48:02   do our next talk about an exposure and [TS]

00:48:05   then we'll talk about the the keyboard i [TS]

00:48:08   will try not to interrupt you [TS]

00:48:10   it's alright that was the best [TS]

00:48:11   interruption ever this episode is also [TS]

00:48:57   about every audiobook you could possibly [TS]

00:48:58   imagine and if you're listening to a [TS]

00:49:01   podcast you are obviously this is like [TS]

00:49:03   the greatest sponsor to medium match [TS]

00:49:05   ever if you're listening to me tell you [TS]

00:49:07   this you obviously like listening to [TS]

00:49:08   long-form audio content audiobooks are a [TS]

00:49:12   terrific way to fill your time if you've [TS]

00:49:28   they have comedy things they have so [TS]

00:49:38   really great [TS]

00:49:39   so go there get a 30-day free trial at [TS]

00:49:42   audible.com / talk show they always say [TS]

00:49:45   optional you can recommend a book i will [TS]

00:49:48   just say the book that i have read over [TS]

00:49:50   the Thanksgiving break i reread reread [TS]

00:49:55   last year's becoming Steve Jobs the [TS]

00:50:00   evolution of a reckless upstart into a [TS]

00:50:02   visionary leader by Brent slender and [TS]

00:50:05   Rick Petrocelli this is sort of the [TS]

00:50:07   unauthorized biography of Steve Jobs [TS]

00:50:09   that came out last year that i found way [TS]

00:50:12   more satisfying and way more interesting [TS]

00:50:14   and way more insightful than his [TS]

00:50:16   official biography by walter whatever [TS]

00:50:20   his name was because it focuses on [TS]

00:50:24   his work and I know that this book sort [TS]

00:50:28   of there is sort of a skepticism when it [TS]

00:50:30   came out and people I role because it it [TS]

00:50:32   this book had the participation of [TS]

00:50:34   people like tim cook and a few others at [TS]

00:50:36   apple and the people wanted to present [TS]

00:50:40   it as well this is a white washing of of [TS]

00:50:42   Steve Jobs his life or something like [TS]

00:50:44   that and if you read i don't think [TS]

00:50:45   anybody who actually reads this book [TS]

00:50:46   would actually say that the book it just [TS]

00:50:49   happens not to it happens to be a lot [TS]

00:50:50   less about his personal life and a lot [TS]

00:50:52   more about his professional life early [TS]

00:50:56   years at Apple his years in the [TS]

00:51:01   wilderness when he was at next and when [TS]

00:51:03   he founded Pixar and then how pixar [TS]

00:51:05   became a great success and how Apple [TS]

00:51:07   became you know at least some degree [TS]

00:51:09   that you know I think Apple did a little [TS]

00:51:12   bit better after steve jobs came back in [TS]

00:51:14   97 it's a great great book I've read it [TS]

00:51:17   this is the second time i read it and i [TS]

00:51:19   couldn't recommend more they have it [TS]

00:51:22   they have the unabridged version right [TS]

00:51:23   there on audible.com so you can use it [TS]

00:51:25   to listen to 16 hours 21 minutes pretty [TS]

00:51:29   much like a long episode of of the talk [TS]

00:51:31   show [TS]

00:51:31   so there you go audible.com / talk show [TS]

00:51:34   if you want my recommendation give [TS]

00:51:36   becoming Steve Jobs listen all right [TS]

00:51:42   macbook pro keyboard the new keyboard [TS]

00:51:44   here that I i I've mentioned this so I [TS]

00:51:53   while I was doing my review I at one [TS]

00:51:56   point thought you know what this [TS]

00:51:57   keyboard is different than what i [TS]

00:51:59   expected it doesn't feel like the 12 [TS]

00:52:01   inch macbook keyboard even though it [TS]

00:52:03   looks like the same and it seems to have [TS]

00:52:05   the same key travel it didn't feel the [TS]

00:52:07   same to me at all and then you know [TS]

00:52:08   Apple set on stage that they did [TS]

00:52:10   something different with these [TS]

00:52:11   quote-unquote butterflied switches [TS]

00:52:13   underneath the keys and I believe it [TS]

00:52:15   absolutely it it's less squishy and more [TS]

00:52:18   clicky i would agree and it's like more [TS]

00:52:20   of a bounce right yeah it's it just [TS]

00:52:23   feels better it definitely feels better [TS]

00:52:25   to me okay but at one point during the [TS]

00:52:28   review I thought boy I'd like the way [TS]

00:52:30   this feels better than I feared [TS]

00:52:32   but is this loud this seems loud and i [TS]

00:52:36   called it my wife and son in that [TS]

00:52:38   point and I said listen to this do you [TS]

00:52:39   think this is too loud is this louder [TS]

00:52:41   than than the old ones and they were [TS]

00:52:43   they both convinced me that I was kind [TS]

00:52:45   of crazy they're like it definitely [TS]

00:52:46   sounds different but it's not loud and I [TS]

00:52:48   was like I'll just forget it and I [TS]

00:52:50   didn't write about it but then when the [TS]

00:52:52   reviews all hit a couple of people [TS]

00:52:54   mentioned including you that the you [TS]

00:52:56   have the keyboard is lat louder and I [TS]

00:52:59   thought damn I should have written about [TS]

00:53:00   that because I think I i was on the [TS]

00:53:02   shopping so I have a theory that but [TS]

00:53:05   it's hard because I haven't gone back to [TS]

00:53:07   the macbook but i think you're right i [TS]

00:53:08   think they fixed a lot with the keyboard [TS]

00:53:10   i still don't love it i don't really [TS]

00:53:12   like it really to be honest but I'm that [TS]

00:53:15   I i think i need to move out i need to [TS]

00:53:17   move into the future and an accepting [TS]

00:53:19   this keyboard is changing but i think [TS]

00:53:21   because there's this because the keys [TS]

00:53:24   are flat and when you're moving from it [TS]

00:53:26   a you know a keyboard that had these [TS]

00:53:28   more raised keys with that had more [TS]

00:53:30   travel you might be hitting the keys [TS]

00:53:32   harder and i know i think i hit the keys [TS]

00:53:36   harder especially when I'm like in it [TS]

00:53:38   and I'm really writing and I'm like this [TS]

00:53:39   is it you know I've got a great thought [TS]

00:53:40   and this you know I figured out how to [TS]

00:53:42   do this i feel like i'm sort of slamming [TS]

00:53:44   on the keys a little bit more [TS]

00:53:46   I'm and so that might be why it's louder [TS]

00:53:48   that it's it's it's part of my dear I [TS]

00:53:51   mean I definitely think they it [TS]

00:53:53   certainly is a different sound than the [TS]

00:53:55   the regular macbook and if you actually [TS]

00:53:57   live the funny thing isn't in my video [TS]

00:53:59   review i did a first-person video as I [TS]

00:54:02   do sometimes with the helmet camera and [TS]

00:54:04   whatever the whole the video kind of [TS]

00:54:07   stick was that i knew i was typing on my [TS]

00:54:09   laptop is sort of like a you know a [TS]

00:54:12   diary as I was going through my review [TS]

00:54:13   process and so we recorded the two [TS]

00:54:16   different sounds the beginning opens [TS]

00:54:17   when I'm work i'm typing on my macbook [TS]

00:54:19   and you hear the sounds of the macbook [TS]

00:54:21   air [TS]

00:54:21   sorry was that meant I my macbook air [TS]

00:54:23   and you hear that keyboard sounds of the [TS]

00:54:24   macbook air and then we recorded the [TS]

00:54:26   sounds of the macbook pro because then i [TS]

00:54:28   switched to typing on the macbook pro [TS]

00:54:29   for the rest of the of the piece so you [TS]

00:54:32   hear you here like we are recorded in [TS]

00:54:34   our booth here i do you definitely hear [TS]

00:54:36   the different sounds [TS]

00:54:38   the question I have is is it louder [TS]

00:54:41   because I'm hitting the keys with more [TS]

00:54:42   force or is it just genuinely louder I [TS]

00:54:46   can't really think of a scientific tests [TS]

00:54:48   to figure out what I can think of a [TS]

00:54:50   scientific test but I I have [TS]

00:54:51   done it i think it is ladder and i think [TS]

00:54:54   but i think i think it's a little bit of [TS]

00:54:56   column a little bit of column be i think [TS]

00:54:57   it is louder I do think though that I i [TS]

00:55:00   think i just tend to have a very hard [TS]

00:55:03   typing style and so is right you know [TS]

00:55:06   and i think with other people you know [TS]

00:55:08   have very different you know maybe have [TS]

00:55:10   a gentler typing style and I think if [TS]

00:55:13   you were in like a library and you're [TS]

00:55:16   self-conscious about the noise of your [TS]

00:55:17   typing if you were thinking about typing [TS]

00:55:20   softly I don't think that the macbook is [TS]

00:55:22   going to be a problem i think though [TS]

00:55:23   that if you you know have headphones on [TS]

00:55:27   and weren't really paying attention to [TS]

00:55:29   your typing it could be a problem [TS]

00:55:32   yeah yeah i mean i don't i feel like i [TS]

00:55:38   just some typing a lot harder on this [TS]

00:55:40   computer but maybe I've always typed [TS]

00:55:41   really hard [TS]

00:55:42   yeah what's your opinion of the keyboard [TS]

00:55:44   over all the noise aside like you get [TS]

00:55:48   used to it right like i said in this [TS]

00:55:50   piece and I know a lot of people thought [TS]

00:55:51   it was a super harsh line i was like you [TS]

00:55:53   get used to it [TS]

00:55:54   you also get used to sleeping on a rock [TS]

00:55:55   when you're camping great like I you [TS]

00:55:58   know I didn't mean that to be super [TS]

00:55:59   snarky I guess it came out that way but [TS]

00:56:02   like you get used to it you know it's [TS]

00:56:03   like anything that might not be [TS]

00:56:05   comfortable at first that you just sort [TS]

00:56:06   of get used to it and then you kind of [TS]

00:56:09   learn to like it I like I was that's [TS]

00:56:11   what the other thing I went back to my [TS]

00:56:12   macbook air this weekend I'm just like I [TS]

00:56:14   I missed you you know I i really missed [TS]

00:56:16   you but I've but I've written something [TS]

00:56:20   like I have this also like superstition [TS]

00:56:21   sometimes where I like work on a laptop [TS]

00:56:23   and I like if I've done some of my best [TS]

00:56:24   work on that laptop of like this is a [TS]

00:56:26   great laptop you know I think they did [TS]

00:56:28   the laptop made the work great and I i [TS]

00:56:31   think i've done some really good work on [TS]

00:56:32   this macbook pro so I really can't say [TS]

00:56:34   that a that i don't like you know using [TS]

00:56:38   it [TS]

00:56:39   yeah I i'd i would I I don't have a I I [TS]

00:56:42   don't say that i think it's fine and I [TS]

00:56:44   really am and I say that meaning that i [TS]

00:56:47   think all laptop keyboards are [TS]

00:56:49   compromised you know that none of them [TS]

00:56:51   I've never had a macbook or powerbook or [TS]

00:56:53   any apple laptop ever that has had a [TS]

00:56:57   keyboard that I find as nice as a [TS]

00:56:59   desktop keyboard and on the desktop on [TS]

00:57:01   the yeah the guy who famously still uses [TS]

00:57:03   20 something-year-old Apple extended [TS]

00:57:05   keyboard to that's super cliquey and [TS]

00:57:07   loud [TS]

00:57:08   right on although not as loud as a lot [TS]

00:57:10   of these mechanical keyboards by [TS]

00:57:11   mechanical keyboard standard it's kind [TS]

00:57:12   of quiet but it is very quickly clicking [TS]

00:57:14   loud compared to modern lower travel [TS]

00:57:17   keyboards and I will also add some some [TS]

00:57:21   wiseacre on on Twitter after I made fun [TS]

00:57:24   of you and Walter stockpiling at their [TS]

00:57:27   phone MacBook Airs head this from the [TS]

00:57:30   guy who has a closet full of all the [TS]

00:57:31   aplex ended keyboards which is true i've [TS]

00:57:34   i've got at least like four of them in [TS]

00:57:36   my closet but my defense on that is that [TS]

00:57:39   this keyboard they don't make keyboards [TS]

00:57:40   like this anymore as a keyboard its if [TS]

00:57:42   you do prefer it there it's you know [TS]

00:57:44   there is a reason to stop bottom right [TS]

00:57:47   right at that's the thing I i really do [TS]

00:57:51   prefer the macbook air mat or the old [TS]

00:57:53   macbook air macbook pro keyboard [TS]

00:57:55   yeah I think I preferred the only [TS]

00:57:57   because I'm used to it i think if i [TS]

00:57:58   spend enough time on the new 1i would go [TS]

00:58:00   back to the I go back to this one and I [TS]

00:58:02   beyond did just be too unfamiliar with [TS]

00:58:05   it [TS]

00:58:05   right right yeah it's like anything you [TS]

00:58:08   get used to it you know idea there's [TS]

00:58:10   another thing about the new keyboard [TS]

00:58:12   that I think it and again i think i [TS]

00:58:14   would completely get used to it but I am [TS]

00:58:16   I haven't yet which is that the actual [TS]

00:58:18   keys are bigger the keyboard isn't [TS]

00:58:22   bigger but they've reduced the space [TS]

00:58:24   between the keys and made the keys [TS]

00:58:26   bigger and for some reason it makes me [TS]

00:58:30   feel like my fingers are spread out more [TS]

00:58:33   even though it makes no sense because [TS]

00:58:34   the center of each key is exactly the [TS]

00:58:37   same distance from each other as on the [TS]

00:58:38   old keyboard but for some reason that [TS]

00:58:41   that subtle difference makes me feel [TS]

00:58:43   like I have to spread my fingers out [TS]

00:58:44   more and it's not true but I it somehow [TS]

00:58:48   makes it feel that way [TS]

00:58:49   yeah I really think I've just typing on [TS]

00:58:52   it right now I really think I'm hitting [TS]

00:58:54   the keys harder because and maybe over [TS]

00:58:57   time I wouldn't hit the keys as hard if [TS]

00:58:59   I having i found it if I hadn't if I [TS]

00:59:02   don't keep going back to the old [TS]

00:59:03   keyboard i might get more used to just [TS]

00:59:06   the regular feel of this and i won't [TS]

00:59:08   strike the keys as hard [TS]

00:59:10   and I i think it has something to do [TS]

00:59:13   with the fact that i keep switching [TS]

00:59:14   between them [TS]

00:59:15   alright the other thing that bothers me [TS]

00:59:16   lastly on the keyboard at the new arrow [TS]

00:59:18   key arrangement and I I'd I don't know [TS]

00:59:21   why but it's like that instead of being [TS]

00:59:23   a t-shape now they've made yeah the left [TS]

00:59:26   and right ones full height and I for [TS]

00:59:28   some reason in the two or three weeks [TS]

00:59:29   that i was using the new macbook product [TS]

00:59:32   could never get used to that it just [TS]

00:59:34   took the entire to three-week period [TS]

00:59:36   never got used to it isn't that the same [TS]

00:59:38   on the macbook to yes it started yet [TS]

00:59:40   debuted with the new macbook but i never [TS]

00:59:42   used the new macbook so it's you know I [TS]

00:59:44   mean I other than like just kicking the [TS]

00:59:46   tires in the store and the hands-on area [TS]

00:59:47   i never liked reviewed yeah I really [TS]

00:59:50   know [TS]

00:59:51   yeah I think I kind of got you so i used [TS]

00:59:53   a macbook for like four four months [TS]

00:59:56   about I used most of the summer [TS]

00:59:57   switching that [TS]

00:59:57   switching that [TS]

01:00:00   to my air for sort of heavier work and [TS]

01:00:03   stuff like that and what about the [TS]

01:00:06   trackpad you do care that it's ginormous [TS]

01:00:08   I love it and I don't have any palm I [TS]

01:00:10   didn't have any palm rejection problems [TS]

01:00:12   whatsoever i saw a couple of people on [TS]

01:00:14   Twitter when they first started getting [TS]

01:00:16   their they're 15-inch macbook pros [TS]

01:00:19   saying I you know this is unusual for me [TS]

01:00:22   might my palms keep getting registered [TS]

01:00:24   as you know wonder if they were to get a [TS]

01:00:27   desk [TS]

01:00:29   I don't know i'll add hardware I don't [TS]

01:00:31   know if they're their skin registers [TS]

01:00:35   differently capacity of weird skin or if [TS]

01:00:38   they you know they got a bum device [TS]

01:00:39   I don't know but it didn't I i kept my [TS]

01:00:42   eye on it and it didn't seem it doesn't [TS]

01:00:44   seem to be like a rampant problem it was [TS]

01:00:46   like a couple of people the first few [TS]

01:00:48   days but i retested the 15-inch you know [TS]

01:00:51   it was really thought about it and and [TS]

01:00:53   you know my palms absolutely rest on the [TS]

01:00:55   trackpad while i'm typing and it was [TS]

01:00:57   never a problem I yeah I think I think [TS]

01:01:00   it's a big thing about what the angle [TS]

01:01:02   what angle you're using the laptop at so [TS]

01:01:04   I don't have really any problem when im [TS]

01:01:06   using it at my desk but there have been [TS]

01:01:08   some times where i have it on my lap and [TS]

01:01:09   I do have the problem or the or the keys [TS]

01:01:12   are or the the laptops raised up a [TS]

01:01:14   little bit more so my does the bottom of [TS]

01:01:18   my palm will strike the trackpad is I'm [TS]

01:01:22   trying to type like something lower on [TS]

01:01:24   the keyboard [TS]

01:01:25   i I don't I find it to be delightful and [TS]

01:01:28   it's you know my personal the macbook [TS]

01:01:31   that i own is a 13-inch macbook pro that [TS]

01:01:34   I guess is exactly two years old and I [TS]

01:01:36   think it was the last macbook pro that [TS]

01:01:40   didn't have the magic trackpad and you [TS]

01:01:42   know it's still it physically clicks and [TS]

01:01:46   I much prefer the new trackpad to the [TS]

01:01:48   one to the one that physically clicks [TS]

01:01:50   and especially because it it doesn't [TS]

01:01:53   work as a lever so when you click on the [TS]

01:01:55   top it clicks just as nicely as it does [TS]

01:01:57   when you click at the bottom [TS]

01:01:59   yeah i totally agree and that's one [TS]

01:02:01   thing i hate about going back to the [TS]

01:02:02   macbook air is that it doesn't have the [TS]

01:02:04   four stature whatever's going on [TS]

01:02:05   whatever they call it [TS]

01:02:06   it's my view it's it's it seems silly [TS]

01:02:09   but at this point like I'm not really [TS]

01:02:12   performance [TS]

01:02:13   constraint nothing I really do on [TS]

01:02:15   especially on a macbook really strange [TS]

01:02:17   the cpu that much and in one of the [TS]

01:02:20   little things I thought about was a what [TS]

01:02:23   I've always done when I buy macbook I [TS]

01:02:24   don't buy them that often you know I try [TS]

01:02:26   to just get it set up exactly as I want [TS]

01:02:29   and then use it until I can't stand it [TS]

01:02:31   anymore and then get a new one and when [TS]

01:02:33   I buy a new one I've always just maxed [TS]

01:02:36   it out just go into the thing and [TS]

01:02:38   upgrade from you know the core i5 to the [TS]

01:02:40   core i7 you know the top-of-the-line [TS]

01:02:42   whatever get the most Ram get the [TS]

01:02:45   biggest SSD etc i realized i think that [TS]

01:02:48   if I were buying a new matter or when [TS]

01:02:50   when next I do buy a new macbook pro I'm [TS]

01:02:53   not going to upgrade the cpu i'm going [TS]

01:02:56   to probably stick with the default [TS]

01:02:57   because the cpu is in constraining me at [TS]

01:02:59   all and I'd rather have the longer [TS]

01:03:00   battery life of the lower power cpu that [TS]

01:03:03   I've got it [TS]

01:03:04   I think I made a mistake two years ago [TS]

01:03:06   when I bought the highest speed cpu [TS]

01:03:08   because i don't i'm not i don't need it [TS]

01:03:10   I never pegged this almost never mind [TS]

01:03:12   the CPUs and but I'm getting no I'm [TS]

01:03:14   getting worse battery life because I [TS]

01:03:16   made that decision and and you know what [TS]

01:03:18   that was [TS]

01:03:19   I spent hours benchmarking the old pro [TS]

01:03:22   that old 13 inch pro and the new 13-inch [TS]

01:03:25   pro and performance wise even though [TS]

01:03:28   there's a leap in a generation [TS]

01:03:30   yeah there's one generation Intel that [TS]

01:03:32   it leaps that happens you really cannot [TS]

01:03:36   tell the difference in the performance [TS]

01:03:37   that the Intel performance has basically [TS]

01:03:40   slowed to a point where you're not going [TS]

01:03:41   to notice much unless you're really not [TS]

01:03:45   going to notice much unless i mean ii [TS]

01:03:47   unless you're doing things that are more [TS]

01:03:49   relying on storage and the SSD and the [TS]

01:03:51   SSD speed was faster but not much faster [TS]

01:03:53   for everyday type things so yeah like [TS]

01:03:57   that you have tennis you know people [TS]

01:04:00   said all well should I get the new one [TS]

01:04:01   because it's faster i don't i don't [TS]

01:04:03   think the reason to get the new one is [TS]

01:04:05   because of perfectly well it's not [TS]

01:04:06   because of / 4 processor performance is [TS]

01:04:09   faster its graphics performance or SSD [TS]

01:04:11   performance and for the everyday person [TS]

01:04:13   that's not a ton that they're going to [TS]

01:04:15   see ya [TS]

01:04:16   I i was surprised and it and I don't [TS]

01:04:21   know how much of this is just that the [TS]

01:04:22   constraints that Apple was under because [TS]

01:04:24   obviously the touch bar ones weren't [TS]

01:04:26   ready on day one [TS]

01:04:27   and because nobody gotta touch bar [TS]

01:04:28   review unit until like a week or so [TS]

01:04:30   after the event like leaving the event [TS]

01:04:32   everybody got a review unit got the [TS]

01:04:34   macbook escape and I you know I think [TS]

01:04:36   that they were you know I think it was [TS]

01:04:38   simply because they didn't have them to [TS]

01:04:39   give out yeah totally [TS]

01:04:41   and when I did get the 13-inch the one [TS]

01:04:43   that i got and I'm guessing they [TS]

01:04:46   probably gave everybody the same one was [TS]

01:04:47   the core i5 model not the core i7 I [TS]

01:04:50   don't know this for sure but in my [TS]

01:04:51   memory every other time I've ever gotten [TS]

01:04:54   reviews from Apple they just give you [TS]

01:04:56   the top-of-the-line model i was happy [TS]

01:04:58   they didn't actually yeah me too because [TS]

01:05:00   it's a typical more typical [TS]

01:05:02   configuration but I honestly wonder in [TS]

01:05:04   that in this case whether it wasn't just [TS]

01:05:06   can split constraints but maybe like [TS]

01:05:09   that they've really think that this is [TS]

01:05:10   the better model because the battery [TS]

01:05:13   life is so much better [TS]

01:05:14   that's it one of the century one of the [TS]

01:05:16   things that I found that is so much [TS]

01:05:18   better [TS]

01:05:18   I'm not going to buy one right now I'm [TS]

01:05:20   like my two-year-old macbook pro is [TS]

01:05:22   still it's it's too good and it's [TS]

01:05:24   there's too many reasons i think to wait [TS]

01:05:26   another year on you know on upgrading so [TS]

01:05:31   I'm personally not upgrading to one of [TS]

01:05:33   these models it's just not maybe I [TS]

01:05:34   should just buy your old one [TS]

01:05:36   maybe you got your keyboard but they get [TS]

01:05:42   you have me figured out I think I [TS]

01:05:43   finally figured it out if they're why [TS]

01:05:45   old old macbook if there was a reason to [TS]

01:05:48   get it it would be the battery life it [TS]

01:05:50   just so happens that when i'm using my [TS]

01:05:51   macbook pro I very seldom and untethered [TS]

01:05:54   for that long but if I were that would [TS]

01:05:57   be the number one reason to upgrade [TS]

01:05:58   because the battery life on the new [TS]

01:06:00   macbook pro is unlike any other macbook [TS]

01:06:03   pro I've ever used a it's just [TS]

01:06:06   unbelievable I mean I go in my review I [TS]

01:06:08   mentioned keeping it open on my lap [TS]

01:06:09   during Game seven of the World Series [TS]

01:06:11   which was I don't like four and a half [TS]

01:06:13   hours incredibly long baseball game and [TS]

01:06:15   even had like a rain delay and when i [TS]

01:06:17   got i was done i still had seventy [TS]

01:06:19   percent battery life left it was [TS]

01:06:21   I've never seen anything like that and [TS]

01:06:23   this is the one with the touch bar [TS]

01:06:24   yeah 13 inch with a touch bar but the [TS]

01:06:26   core i5 not the core i7 and you know i [TS]

01:06:30   was on Twitter and Safari you know the [TS]

01:06:32   whole game with varying results and I [TS]

01:06:37   think it could be some of the apps and [TS]

01:06:39   apple said that [TS]

01:06:40   you know some of the apps that i I've [TS]

01:06:42   user obviously more processor-intensive [TS]

01:06:44   i'm talking like TweetDeck really like [TS]

01:06:47   TweetDeck or I'll use them i mean [TS]

01:06:49   obviously chrome as a as a really huge [TS]

01:06:52   battery sucker but like you know i just [TS]

01:06:55   noticed whether it's sweet talkers or [TS]

01:06:57   Spotify both of those can have some [TS]

01:06:59   various varying results but yeah pretty [TS]

01:07:02   much [TS]

01:07:02   you know in line with with what they've [TS]

01:07:05   said was with was my results but I'm [TS]

01:07:07   I've gotten you get longer battery life [TS]

01:07:10   with the now that we're going to but go [TS]

01:07:13   back and start talking about that [TS]

01:07:14   13-inch without touch bar gonna get [TS]

01:07:17   longer battery life with that one [TS]

01:07:18   yeah but not much you know couple 20 [TS]

01:07:21   minutes but if it's like your defining [TS]

01:07:23   characteristic of what you need from a [TS]

01:07:24   macbook it's that's the one to get right [TS]

01:07:27   yeah you want to talk about dongles [TS]

01:07:30   that's what I'm talking about dongles [TS]

01:07:33   you know I i think the dongle thing is [TS]

01:07:37   so overblown I it is obviously a problem [TS]

01:07:39   if you get it now [TS]

01:07:41   I mean I would need a bunch there's no [TS]

01:07:42   doubt about it if my main computer was a [TS]

01:07:44   brand new macbook pro with the touch bar [TS]

01:07:46   I would be using a couple of dongles [TS]

01:07:49   right now I would you know if it were my [TS]

01:07:51   main computer i would I am at my desk so [TS]

01:07:53   I would be like you I'd need one to hook [TS]

01:07:55   up a display and i'd i would need a [TS]

01:07:57   dongle to do it unless I've already [TS]

01:07:59   bought that that LG 5k display which I [TS]

01:08:03   probably would do if it was my only [TS]

01:08:04   computer depending on when last yeah [TS]

01:08:06   that's plenty and i would need one to [TS]

01:08:10   hook up this microphone because this [TS]

01:08:11   microphone is it connects to that my [TS]

01:08:14   computer by USB a so i would need some [TS]

01:08:18   kind of dongle to connect that to the [TS]

01:08:20   USBC port and i would also need one to [TS]

01:08:25   connect my external hard drives because [TS]

01:08:27   none of my external hard drives are USBC [TS]

01:08:29   they're all I think thunderbolt and I [TS]

01:08:32   that also i have i forget i think i [TS]

01:08:35   might even have one here that's old [TS]

01:08:36   firewire one that I have a firewire to [TS]

01:08:38   Thunderbolt so I have to go now i would [TS]

01:08:41   have to i would i might have to because [TS]

01:08:43   i don't think there's a firewire yeah bc [TS]

01:08:45   i have to go firewire to Thunderbolt [TS]

01:08:47   Thunderbolt USBC yeah I have a right at [TS]

01:08:52   well that's not what I'm doing with this [TS]

01:08:53   one I've got the [TS]

01:08:54   displayport to Thunderbolt for my [TS]

01:08:57   thunderbolt monitor did you see there [TS]

01:08:59   was a story somebody had think i like to [TS]

01:09:01   an underlying fireball but somebody on [TS]

01:09:03   medium had a post where they called the [TS]

01:09:04   new macbook pro surprising a great [TS]

01:09:07   machine for hackers and that it yeah [TS]

01:09:09   arguably the most open computer apples [TS]

01:09:11   ever made and it you know just as a you [TS]

01:09:14   know to synopsize that argument the new [TS]

01:09:17   macbook pros don't have a single [TS]

01:09:19   proprietary port on right they've got [TS]

01:09:22   four open standard USB / Thunderbolt [TS]

01:09:26   three ports and one standard headphone [TS]

01:09:29   jack and that's it [TS]

01:09:30   SFI it is there ever been an apple [TS]

01:09:32   computer and a Macintosh without a [TS]

01:09:34   single proprietary port I don't think so [TS]

01:09:36   and I've said this many times [TS]

01:09:39   USBC is the greatest port it's a great [TS]

01:09:42   port i think the i think that the the [TS]

01:09:45   backlash has been i think it's been to [TS]

01:09:49   some of the obviously them cutting out [TS]

01:09:51   the other ports but i also think that [TS]

01:09:53   there's this major backlash to apple not [TS]

01:09:55   having this sort of unified port [TS]

01:09:57   structure and I mean why not you put us [TS]

01:10:02   bc on the iphone right that was like one [TS]

01:10:04   of the biggest complaints when when they [TS]

01:10:05   announced the macbook was like okay so [TS]

01:10:07   now i can't plug my iphone into into the [TS]

01:10:11   and it can play your iphone into your [TS]

01:10:14   macbook right in a different adapter but [TS]

01:10:16   you also can plug your iphone into the [TS]

01:10:18   same adapter that goes into the wall [TS]

01:10:19   because that's USBC right and I don't [TS]

01:10:23   have to find that article but it's a it [TS]

01:10:26   but part of his argument is as you know [TS]

01:10:28   sort of a nerdy android is already [TS]

01:10:31   yeah he said he's got like a nexus 6p s [TS]

01:10:33   his phone because he uses a nexus he [TS]

01:10:36   just needs to take one chart he just [TS]

01:10:37   takes his macbook pro charger with them [TS]

01:10:39   and then he can plug as you can plug [TS]

01:10:40   this phone into it as well which is you [TS]

01:10:42   know convenient right but that and [TS]

01:10:44   that's a great argument for why is an [TS]

01:10:47   apple using USBC on iphones even for the [TS]

01:10:50   connector that goes into the wall now of [TS]

01:10:52   course they hadn't had the new macbook [TS]

01:10:54   pros out yet [TS]

01:10:55   and of course there's a far bigger [TS]

01:10:57   market for people who are buying iphones [TS]

01:10:59   and it's probably going to piss off [TS]

01:11:00   we're going to hear all the complaints [TS]

01:11:01   when they do switch to us bc there oh [TS]

01:11:03   now I can't use my old cord to plug into [TS]

01:11:05   my you know that [TS]

01:11:07   you little wall adapter that comes in [TS]

01:11:09   the box with the iphone we're going to [TS]

01:11:11   hear all that all over again but you [TS]

01:11:13   know it's a tough time is it goes back [TS]

01:11:14   to my name is a tough time to be an [TS]

01:11:15   early adopter there's a lot of [TS]

01:11:17   transition that's going on I don't think [TS]

01:11:19   they're ever going to switch to us bc on [TS]

01:11:21   the iphone or ipad and I don't think [TS]

01:11:23   they're going to switch from the USBC on [TS]

01:11:26   the input right female input on the [TS]

01:11:29   iphone or on the iPad because they love [TS]

01:11:32   lightning and now they've made a big [TS]

01:11:33   to-do about lightning as a audio [TS]

01:11:35   interface but i do think they will [TS]

01:11:38   switch to us bc on the adapter that goes [TS]

01:11:41   into the wall [TS]

01:11:42   yeah i yeah that's what I think they'll [TS]

01:11:44   do I think and I again in my review I [TS]

01:11:47   call them out as a nickel-and-dime move [TS]

01:11:48   I i think what they should have done is [TS]

01:11:50   done exactly what google did with the [TS]

01:11:53   pixel phone isn't ship both cables in in [TS]

01:11:57   the box when you buy the new pixel you [TS]

01:11:59   get a USBC to us bc cable that's right [TS]

01:12:04   and you get a USB a to us bc cable [TS]

01:12:07   that's right or just put I mean are we [TS]

01:12:11   talking about which box so they put that [TS]

01:12:13   in them they should put that you put [TS]

01:12:14   them in the iphone i think and and if [TS]

01:12:16   they you know I don't think it would [TS]

01:12:17   have killed killed him that maybe put [TS]

01:12:19   that cable in the two-thousand-dollar [TS]

01:12:22   macbook pro bar either but i think [TS]

01:12:23   everyone should come with the iphone 7 I [TS]

01:12:25   think the iphone 7 should should have [TS]

01:12:27   shipped with both cables and I have [TS]

01:12:28   adamantly said that they should have [TS]

01:12:30   included the u.s. bc2 usba adapter [TS]

01:12:34   that's $19 but now nine dollars the same [TS]

01:12:36   price as the adapter that you get in [TS]

01:12:38   from the lightning cable to the [TS]

01:12:40   headphone jack in yes the iphone box [TS]

01:12:42   include that in the macbook pro box [TS]

01:12:45   yeah and then everyone will be pretty [TS]

01:12:46   much okay yeah I it's a nickel-and-dime [TS]

01:12:49   of I really think they should have [TS]

01:12:50   included one of those in the box and I [TS]

01:12:52   know that the you know I've made this [TS]

01:12:53   argument before that shipping the [TS]

01:12:55   dongles with the device is sort of an [TS]

01:12:57   apple-like but you know what they did it [TS]

01:12:59   with the headphone jack right with the [TS]

01:13:01   iphone 7 and ultimately i think that was [TS]

01:13:04   the right thing to do I really do it [TS]

01:13:05   built up a lot of goodwill [TS]

01:13:07   yeah they will they should not okay it's [TS]

01:13:09   here I got this year I have this article [TS]

01:13:12   it will be in the show notes it's adam [TS]

01:13:14   Liedtke the new macbook pro is kind of [TS]

01:13:16   great for hackers yeah so i will include [TS]

01:13:19   that in the i said i don't know [TS]

01:13:20   I mean you know I and i actually ended [TS]

01:13:22   up writing this dongle piece before the [TS]

01:13:24   macbook pros came out because I just [TS]

01:13:26   felt I had this inkling that this was [TS]

01:13:28   going to be a big deal [TS]

01:13:30   even before they announce them and I you [TS]

01:13:32   know people were already at talking [TS]

01:13:34   about all the dongle situation around [TS]

01:13:35   the iphone so i did this piece about [TS]

01:13:38   this is the year of the dongle and you [TS]

01:13:40   know actually you know these newports [TS]

01:13:42   are great so let's not complain about [TS]

01:13:43   the ports but we can't complain about [TS]

01:13:45   the dongles that kind of stuff and you [TS]

01:13:47   know I recommended a couple of good [TS]

01:13:48   options there are some really good [TS]

01:13:50   options you know they're there it's a [TS]

01:13:51   it's a booming dongle market out there [TS]

01:13:53   so it's a great time to be in the dongle [TS]

01:13:55   business the problem is frankly on us [TS]

01:13:58   that you were you forget them at places [TS]

01:14:00   and they are annoying right there just [TS]

01:14:01   like are annoying [TS]

01:14:03   well are even if you from even if you [TS]

01:14:06   don't forget them or lose them [TS]

01:14:08   it's did you take the right bag right [TS]

01:14:11   all right you know did you know where do [TS]

01:14:13   you keep them so that they're always [TS]

01:14:14   there you know and you buy two sets so [TS]

01:14:16   you have one in your office and went [TS]

01:14:17   home [TS]

01:14:18   I'm you know and I'm an apple makes [TS]

01:14:21   money off of these there's no doubt [TS]

01:14:23   apple makes money off of these I think [TS]

01:14:25   that secondary to the in all of their [TS]

01:14:27   thinking but it's you know it's [TS]

01:14:29   certainly the fact that they could cut [TS]

01:14:31   the prices as much as they did is true [TS]

01:14:33   right but I mean by the way and that [TS]

01:14:35   article that i wrote you light it you're [TS]

01:14:38   better off buying apple dongles right [TS]

01:14:41   because USBC has had some issues with [TS]

01:14:45   the open development of these of these [TS]

01:14:48   you know but it depends on which ones [TS]

01:14:50   are buying but of of some of the [TS]

01:14:52   adapters where some have fried ports you [TS]

01:14:55   know and you know amazon has a number of [TS]

01:14:57   them listed there even though app [TS]

01:14:59   amazon says they will only carry USB is [TS]

01:15:01   certified USBC dongles and and adapters [TS]

01:15:04   there are many that get through so [TS]

01:15:07   you're who you really are best buying [TS]

01:15:09   something that either apple sells in [TS]

01:15:10   their stores or that Apple make [TS]

01:15:12   themselves i get this is an interesting [TS]

01:15:16   tangent and I'm not afraid to go down [TS]

01:15:17   but I did it come up recently where [TS]

01:15:19   amazon has been found to be selling [TS]

01:15:22   fraudulent stuff you know like Apple had [TS]

01:15:25   a thing where they you know found that [TS]

01:15:27   there is a whole bunch of you know [TS]

01:15:28   supposedly first-party Apple chargers [TS]

01:15:31   being sold on amazon our third party [TS]

01:15:33   ones and that they're completely [TS]

01:15:34   inferior and you know Dave downright [TS]

01:15:37   dangerous in some cases in terms of just [TS]

01:15:39   how shoddily made they are i don't trust [TS]

01:15:42   amazon for stuff like that anymore i [TS]

01:15:44   really don't [TS]

01:15:45   yeah i mean like it was funny when I was [TS]

01:15:47   doing the reporting for the story you [TS]

01:15:49   know I think the only cables i would buy [TS]

01:15:50   from amazon honestly are the amazon [TS]

01:15:52   basics right amazon branded ones because [TS]

01:15:55   you know that those aren't fake and [TS]

01:15:57   that's a really experienced with them so [TS]

01:16:00   when I was doing this dongle reporting [TS]

01:16:02   because i'm a dongle journalists at this [TS]

01:16:04   point I so so I spoke to the USB I f [TS]

01:16:08   which is the the governing body that [TS]

01:16:10   controls the standards around USB USB CD [TS]

01:16:14   and USB in general and so they you know [TS]

01:16:17   ran me through how something get [TS]

01:16:19   certified right and that they have to [TS]

01:16:20   meet their specs and blah blah blah and [TS]

01:16:23   they said okay amazon says that they [TS]

01:16:25   will only carry things that I've met [TS]

01:16:27   that have been started there's did not [TS]

01:16:30   certified because some things haven't [TS]

01:16:32   been certified but meet the requirements [TS]

01:16:35   of the USB I f.m so the companies don't [TS]

01:16:38   have to have a USB iaf approval which [TS]

01:16:40   cost some money they just have to have [TS]

01:16:44   said we'd meet these we meet these it's [TS]

01:16:46   basically just give a they just give [TS]

01:16:48   their work on it to be honest and so [TS]

01:16:51   when I i started doing some research and [TS]

01:16:54   I was like I found one product on Amazon [TS]

01:16:56   I looked very sort of it looks shady [TS]

01:16:59   frankly and so I emailed amazon PR and [TS]

01:17:02   they said yeah we don't we [TS]

01:17:03   they say that this meets the USB is [TS]

01:17:05   certification but more than that we [TS]

01:17:08   don't really know right so you're in [TS]

01:17:12   this place we're like okay amazon says [TS]

01:17:14   yes we do this and they have it listed [TS]

01:17:16   on their site in this dongle article i [TS]

01:17:17   linked to their policy but there's [TS]

01:17:22   really no assurance that they really do [TS]

01:17:24   meet that and so you know my advice and [TS]

01:17:27   at the one i do recommend here I spoke [TS]

01:17:29   to the company they said yes we do have [TS]

01:17:30   meet the stats I are we do meet the [TS]

01:17:33   certification or the requirements that [TS]

01:17:35   went to the US BF they also said this [TS]

01:17:37   one is listed but yeah there's lots more [TS]

01:17:40   than meets the eye you know these [TS]

01:17:41   goggles are not just it's just cheap [TS]

01:17:43   piece of plastic and there's more to it [TS]

01:17:45   you buy stuff from monoprice now I love [TS]

01:17:50   this company and I've never had a bad [TS]

01:17:52   bad product from them announcing the [TS]

01:17:55   segue into an ad no it is not obviously [TS]

01:17:58   it is an honest just endorsement the end [TS]

01:18:00   I but the truth is I was looking but I [TS]

01:18:03   mean you're like that was a compliment [TS]

01:18:04   you are that such a great segue or for [TS]

01:18:06   the ads for your for your sponsors that [TS]

01:18:08   sometimes you don't really know so I was [TS]

01:18:10   like it's a not answer I would love to [TS]

01:18:12   have my sponsor but I'm monoprice is a [TS]

01:18:14   great company they there there stick is [TS]

01:18:17   that the you know that their cables and [TS]

01:18:19   dongles and a center are very low price [TS]

01:18:21   but they're also really well made and [TS]

01:18:26   they make them themselves as far as i [TS]

01:18:28   know all they sell our their own [TS]

01:18:29   products so you go to monoprice.com and [TS]

01:18:32   search for various cables and they even [TS]

01:18:35   have like it it's a little can be a [TS]

01:18:38   little bit confusing we're like [TS]

01:18:40   sometimes they have like three different [TS]

01:18:42   tiers and I don't know what the names [TS]

01:18:44   are but there's something I look at this [TS]

01:18:46   good better and best of the cabling and [TS]

01:18:48   there's like the one that's the cheapest [TS]

01:18:49   and then they have ones like a like I've [TS]

01:18:52   bought a bunch of little lit real little [TS]

01:18:54   like six-inch tiny 6-inch lightning [TS]

01:18:57   cables because there's certain [TS]

01:18:59   situations for that you don't want a big [TS]

01:19:01   long cable like when i plug a like a [TS]

01:19:04   movie battery pack into my phone I don't [TS]

01:19:06   want I don't want a three foot cable [TS]

01:19:08   okay on a tiny little cable and they [TS]

01:19:10   have said this company makes them they [TS]

01:19:12   make them and they're super low priced [TS]

01:19:14   and they have a great reputation for [TS]

01:19:15   quality but right now in my opinion they [TS]

01:19:18   don't have a lot of the USBC Thunderbolt [TS]

01:19:20   stuff because I think they're not ready [TS]

01:19:22   yet [TS]

01:19:23   you know it's like I feel like by this [TS]

01:19:25   time next year so these and they're all [TS]

01:19:26   mfi certified yeah and by next by this [TS]

01:19:29   time next year i think model price is [TS]

01:19:30   the place you maybe even six months from [TS]

01:19:32   now [TS]

01:19:32   monoprice will be the place to go to get [TS]

01:19:34   all your you know USBC stuff that you [TS]

01:19:37   don't want to pay thirty nine dollars or [TS]

01:19:39   29 direct from apple for but you can't [TS]

01:19:41   do it yet because i think it's still so [TS]

01:19:42   new but they have ones like that the [TS]

01:19:44   high-end one has like this is like a [TS]

01:19:48   just a lightning USB a to lightning [TS]

01:19:50   adapter and it has like a nice braided [TS]

01:19:52   oh yeah canvas cable and gavin has this [TS]

01:19:57   is the thing I really love about it [TS]

01:19:58   a little green light on the lightning [TS]

01:20:00   and it was sort of like the old yes like [TS]

01:20:03   magsafe yeah it's like magsafe which is [TS]

01:20:05   another thing that i really miss on the [TS]

01:20:06   new i mentioned that in my review I was [TS]

01:20:09   it is maddening not to have the little [TS]

01:20:11   light you know what and for me and you [TS]

01:20:13   know it again we're buying these right [TS]

01:20:16   now by the way I'm telling you it's a [TS]

01:20:18   great guy i did again they haven't paid [TS]

01:20:20   me in a climate i love this company and [TS]

01:20:22   also they're certified again when i did [TS]

01:20:23   my dongle reporting it really is [TS]

01:20:25   important to get the certified stuff [TS]

01:20:27   because it means apples tested it like [TS]

01:20:30   Apple I mean say what you want about [TS]

01:20:33   buying some of these you overprice [TS]

01:20:35   dongles Apple tests all of those with [TS]

01:20:37   their products right [TS]

01:20:38   in fact it's funny i just got an update [TS]

01:20:40   i plugged in one of these adapters and [TS]

01:20:42   said I needed to update the system for [TS]

01:20:44   the dongle have you seen that pop-up yes [TS]

01:20:48   yes I just an example of like had that [TS]

01:20:51   the two are integrated right so but mfi [TS]

01:20:54   you know it might seem like it's a [TS]

01:20:56   stupid little thing but it's it's [TS]

01:20:57   important to look for this it's the same [TS]

01:20:59   with the USB CIF stuff you want to look [TS]

01:21:01   for that you sbif certification [TS]

01:21:04   the other thing that monoprice has their [TS]

01:21:05   mid priced ones have like flat cables [TS]

01:21:07   like a ribbon cable instead of a tube [TS]

01:21:09   and those can be really nice too because [TS]

01:21:11   they're a lot less likely to get tangled [TS]

01:21:13   up if they're longer anyway they make [TS]

01:21:15   great stuff i love having you want to do [TS]

01:21:17   a column now not on goals but cables [TS]

01:21:19   yeah well monoprice cables are great and [TS]

01:21:22   I love having the indicator light and i [TS]

01:21:23   really miss having another macbook and [TS]

01:21:25   one of the things is that it's it's our [TS]

01:21:27   stupid house the stupid house we live in [TS]

01:21:28   we have some why don't know who the hell [TS]

01:21:32   set up these goddamn sockets originally [TS]

01:21:34   and thought it was a good idea but [TS]

01:21:35   there's way too many of them that are [TS]

01:21:37   set up where they're connected the [TS]

01:21:38   switches on the wall [TS]

01:21:39   yeah in races and the only reason you'd [TS]

01:21:42   ever want that is having a light but [TS]

01:21:44   like in our kitchen there is a light [TS]

01:21:46   hanging from the ceiling like why would [TS]

01:21:49   anybody put a water it that we have it [TS]

01:21:52   we have sockets that have their you know [TS]

01:21:54   meant to be hooked up to light switches [TS]

01:21:56   in positions where you never want to put [TS]

01:21:58   a light and a totally but that means [TS]

01:22:00   we've got sockets that are sometimes off [TS]

01:22:01   and i love it you know and there's [TS]

01:22:05   nobody comes into the room and flicks it [TS]

01:22:07   but they don't realize that it's not [TS]

01:22:08   until then you turn it off and you plug [TS]

01:22:10   something in your likewise it's not [TS]

01:22:11   charging [TS]

01:22:11   right and the other common scenario for [TS]

01:22:13   me at least is weird you know it's [TS]

01:22:15   somewhat older house and some some of [TS]

01:22:19   the sockets are little loosey-goosey and [TS]

01:22:20   when you put the heavy macbook charger [TS]

01:22:22   right in the wall sometimes gravity just [TS]

01:22:24   pulls it out enough where it's not [TS]

01:22:26   actually in the light having the light [TS]

01:22:28   actually go on when you plug it into the [TS]

01:22:30   thing I find to be very very helpful [TS]

01:22:33   because every once in a while i'll plug [TS]

01:22:35   in the magsafe on my macbook and the [TS]

01:22:36   light doesn't go on and I know it's [TS]

01:22:38   either plugged into a socket that needs [TS]

01:22:40   to switch to be flipped or the thing on [TS]

01:22:42   the wall isn't in all the way [TS]

01:22:44   yeah I'm with you on ID on the light [TS]

01:22:47   especially to the side of the same [TS]

01:22:48   situation or sometimes it will fall out [TS]

01:22:50   like well like you know you're pulling [TS]

01:22:53   out and it falls out or like we have you [TS]

01:22:55   know that when we had the dog and it was [TS]

01:22:56   younger we would take it we would unplug [TS]

01:22:58   everything because we don't want to eat [TS]

01:23:00   anything and you know you think you plug [TS]

01:23:04   in your thing you think it's charging [TS]

01:23:05   but then it's not charging because you [TS]

01:23:06   don't see the light and I always love [TS]

01:23:08   the orange to green it's like aren't you [TS]

01:23:10   know it's still charging green you know [TS]

01:23:11   it's good yeah you don't even have to [TS]

01:23:12   open the thing i really ask that [TS]

01:23:14   and these lightning cables from [TS]

01:23:16   monoprice have those so anyway that's [TS]

01:23:17   and I don't know what we're talking [TS]

01:23:18   about cables you know this Griffin [TS]

01:23:20   Griffin makes the the fake magsafe for [TS]

01:23:24   us bc yeah have you seen it i I've [TS]

01:23:27   tested i didn't write about it it's [TS]

01:23:28   really not worth it because again you [TS]

01:23:30   had with then you have this little [TS]

01:23:31   dongle thing you have another dongle [TS]

01:23:34   hanging off for us bc you know in the [TS]

01:23:37   USB port you're stuck with what should I [TS]

01:23:38   do with that thing you know it's just [TS]

01:23:39   like and I've lost it like I don't know [TS]

01:23:41   where it is right now I mean the offices [TS]

01:23:43   and that's already but so you've lost [TS]

01:23:44   the dongle for the whatever priced it's [TS]

01:23:48   like a table it's an oven for your uncle [TS]

01:23:50   yeah it is god bless Griffin for for [TS]

01:23:54   having tried to make it but no media [TS]

01:23:56   thank you think I'm sorry to be mean to [TS]

01:23:58   you it doesn't know where it doesn't [TS]

01:24:00   satisfy it doesn't it [TS]

01:24:02   it's not the same yeah no it's not it's [TS]

01:24:04   i plan to send it back [TS]

01:24:07   Thank You Griffin for sent me this [TS]

01:24:08   product that i did not like but good [TS]

01:24:10   work making it ya know i'm happy about [TS]

01:24:14   monoprice that this is a great great [TS]

01:24:17   site uh what is a complaint i've seen [TS]

01:24:19   and i just did not occur to me while I [TS]

01:24:21   was testing the device but some people [TS]

01:24:23   have said that with there's you know I [TS]

01:24:24   bought a [TS]

01:24:25   USBC a thumb thumb drive [TS]

01:24:31   do you know because that's one of the [TS]

01:24:32   little things that you you know you'd [TS]

01:24:34   you know being able to plug a thumb [TS]

01:24:36   drive in it just you know usba is so [TS]

01:24:38   ubiquitous that it did the first time I [TS]

01:24:41   i really did run into this well as [TS]

01:24:42   testing them the macbook i was going to [TS]

01:24:44   transfer is just one thing with a thumb [TS]

01:24:46   drive and it's like oh crap can't do [TS]

01:24:48   that [TS]

01:24:48   wow that's weird so i bought a [TS]

01:24:51   thumbdrive that's us bc i've seen people [TS]

01:24:54   say that they have some some USBC things [TS]

01:24:58   probably not the cables but you know [TS]

01:25:00   like drives or card readers or something [TS]

01:25:02   and powered well but the problem on the [TS]

01:25:06   new macbook pros is that the USBC port [TS]

01:25:08   or too close to each other that they're [TS]

01:25:09   so close to each other that there are [TS]

01:25:11   some things that you can plug in and it [TS]

01:25:13   covers the other port or is at least [TS]

01:25:16   close enough to the other port that you [TS]

01:25:17   can't even plug the cable [TS]

01:25:19   well that's that's exactly the problem [TS]

01:25:20   that i have on the 13-inch as we come [TS]

01:25:24   back to the tape the 13-inch no escape [TS]

01:25:27   whatever it's got the macbook no escape [TS]

01:25:29   we should come up with another name for [TS]

01:25:30   that I don't like love the no escape [TS]

01:25:32   anyway no it's not no escape it is the [TS]

01:25:34   macbook back to escape sorry that [TS]

01:25:36   happened to escape on that the ports are [TS]

01:25:39   close to each other [TS]

01:25:40   yeah and i have this SD card reader that [TS]

01:25:44   has to be powered because many of these [TS]

01:25:47   dongles don't require power to work [TS]

01:25:50   depending on what you're plugging into [TS]

01:25:51   them and depending how good the dongle [TS]

01:25:53   is so this is one that's made by [TS]

01:25:55   hyperdrive it's a really cheap you SD [TS]

01:25:57   card USB USB see SD card reader but you [TS]

01:26:01   have to plug it requires power and I [TS]

01:26:05   can't plug in the power because it's [TS]

01:26:07   blocking the port you laugh at my my [TS]

01:26:13   life [TS]

01:26:14   well it's ya know but it's part of the [TS]

01:26:17   thing that is part of the thing i think [TS]

01:26:19   i bought I bought an SD card reader too [TS]

01:26:21   and I'm i don't know what the hell i put [TS]

01:26:24   it open my bag right it's no good [TS]

01:26:28   like as much as people complain about [TS]

01:26:29   these and it does look silly and stupid [TS]

01:26:31   companies are like these are things that [TS]

01:26:33   people deal with in their everyday life [TS]

01:26:35   you know and maybe some of us more than [TS]

01:26:38   others [TS]

01:26:39   I like I'm lucky I'm sitting here with [TS]

01:26:41   like a giant bag of dongles you know [TS]

01:26:43   because i just called them all in when i [TS]

01:26:46   was doing this dongle piece but knowing [TS]

01:26:50   literally it's like five hundred dollars [TS]

01:26:52   worth of dongles if not more than i had [TS]

01:26:54   sad one mother nice thing about [TS]

01:26:55   monoprice is that with other cables that [TS]

01:26:57   they sell they have some color choices i [TS]

01:26:59   know and the color choices if you if you [TS]

01:27:01   if you think about it before you place [TS]

01:27:04   your order you can do some smart things [TS]

01:27:05   where I when I started doing a few [TS]

01:27:07   months ago is for life what's the old [TS]

01:27:11   USB to microUSB right the right one that [TS]

01:27:14   was sort of that's the real small the [TS]

01:27:16   smallest USB connector before us bc but [TS]

01:27:19   how many many is it magic its micro mini [TS]

01:27:22   was the one that was sort of small but [TS]

01:27:24   fat [TS]

01:27:25   well whatever it is the one is what are [TS]

01:27:27   you talking about which the one that [TS]

01:27:28   standard on most at miss android fronts [TS]

01:27:31   that micro that's the one [TS]

01:27:33   so I still I need to have one of those [TS]

01:27:35   because my kindle charges with that yeah [TS]

01:27:37   and my little mophie battery packs [TS]

01:27:40   charged with that so I whenever i buy [TS]

01:27:43   those I just buy them in orange and then [TS]

01:27:45   one day in my bag [TS]

01:27:46   it's very distinctive it's not black [TS]

01:27:48   it's not white the white ones are the [TS]

01:27:49   worst because they could be anything but [TS]

01:27:51   if I see orange I know exactly what it [TS]

01:27:53   is and I there's no confusion [TS]

01:27:56   it's a great if you have to put like a [TS]

01:27:59   bunch of cables and stuff in a bag [TS]

01:28:00   having them color color coordinated by [TS]

01:28:03   type is this is a genius you're a genius [TS]

01:28:07   this is truly like most useful [TS]

01:28:10   information I've ever gotten on it [TS]

01:28:12   anywhere and everywhere ever happens [TS]

01:28:15   everything white is very good for their [TS]

01:28:16   brand but it is absolutely a disaster [TS]

01:28:19   for a laptop bag of yeah listen dongles [TS]

01:28:22   it is absolutely terrible i'm looking at [TS]

01:28:25   these colors that was about to say when [TS]

01:28:27   you set like this site is great and I [TS]

01:28:29   was like I was like oh my god i can get [TS]

01:28:30   this red cord like I've always wanted a [TS]

01:28:33   red [TS]

01:28:33   yeah but if you call if you keep it by [TS]

01:28:35   port you know you can you know keep your [TS]

01:28:37   keep your stuff [TS]

01:28:38   logically of a organist this really is [TS]

01:28:41   the site was a game-changer game change [TS]

01:28:44   this whole thing has been a game-changer [TS]

01:28:45   every every moment of this conversation [TS]

01:28:50   alright let me segue smoothly into [TS]

01:28:52   into third and final sponsor Thank You [TS]

01:28:54   of the show and it's a great one but [TS]

01:28:58   it's it is it is time sensitive it you [TS]

01:29:01   need to listen to me listen to me now [TS]

01:29:03   don't don't hear me later fracture [TS]

01:29:06   fracture is the photo decor company [TS]

01:29:16   and add a laser-cut rigid backing so [TS]

01:29:18   they're ready to display right [TS]

01:29:20   out-of-the-box they even include a wall [TS]

01:29:22   anchor you just upload your photo pick [TS]

01:29:24   the size and that's it that's it and the [TS]

01:29:28   quality is terrific [TS]

01:29:29   I've got a bunch I've given a bunch of [TS]

01:29:32   holiday gifts [TS]

01:29:33   well that's where i'm going with the [TS]

01:29:35   time-sensitive nature here's the thing [TS]

01:29:37   these things are terrific gifts for your [TS]

01:29:40   family [TS]

01:29:40   they really really are it's a great way [TS]

01:29:43   to knock off a whole bunch of your [TS]

01:29:46   holiday shopping in one fell swoop [TS]

01:29:50   but you've got to do it now because it's [TS]

01:29:53   everybody else thinks the same thing and [TS]

01:29:55   these things are all handmade down in [TS]

01:29:58   Gainesville Florida from us source [TS]

01:30:00   materials in a carbon-neutral factory [TS]

01:30:03   but they can't date their peak capacity [TS]

01:30:06   always gets reached and at some point in [TS]

01:30:10   the next week or two they're going to [TS]

01:30:12   hit the point where they cannot fulfill [TS]

01:30:14   orders for the holiday season we are [TS]

01:30:17   recording this on November 30th it's [TS]

01:30:19   probably going to air later tonight I [TS]

01:30:21   don't know what time you're listening to [TS]

01:30:24   to this anywhere in the beginning of [TS]

01:30:26   december you do go act now hopefully [TS]

01:30:29   it's not too late but it's such a great [TS]

01:30:32   gift idea don't just pause the podcast [TS]

01:30:35   even and go do it now or make a note to [TS]

01:30:37   do it because you're gonna kick yourself [TS]

01:30:40   if you wait too long and miss the [TS]

01:30:42   deadline for the holidays because it's a [TS]

01:30:44   it is a easy way to do your holiday to [TS]

01:30:47   give to give gifts and be the people [TS]

01:30:49   you've given two are going to love them [TS]

01:30:53   pictures of friends and family and be [TS]

01:30:55   technically they're they're just [TS]

01:30:56   beautiful things and say well how did [TS]

01:30:58   you make this there's no piece of papers [TS]

01:30:59   behind the glass it's just on the glass [TS]

01:31:01   and then you can tell me about fracture [TS]

01:31:46   ones for the holidays i highly recommend [TS]

01:31:48   it it's Tom telling it's a very very [TS]

01:31:50   popular gift among the people in my [TS]

01:31:53   family [TS]

01:31:53   spoiler during my family you're probably [TS]

01:31:56   getting fracture but because you're [TS]

01:31:59   going to work today [TS]

01:32:00   yeah I'm gonna order it today I'm not [TS]

01:32:02   gonna put it off i'm not a [TS]

01:32:03   procrastinator i might go order but [TS]

01:32:07   mostly I'm going to monitor price right [TS]

01:32:09   away [TS]

01:32:09   yeah what else we have I know the other [TS]

01:32:11   thing is that your column I think it [TS]

01:32:13   just came out today on the spectacles [TS]

01:32:14   snack yeah yeah it's just that they [TS]

01:32:16   called snapchat spectacles are they now [TS]

01:32:19   snap what's the deal with the name [TS]

01:32:20   chance it like that the social network [TS]

01:32:23   is still called snapchat but the parent [TS]

01:32:24   company is now snap is that correct [TS]

01:32:27   ok correct yeah and it doesn't say [TS]

01:32:29   snapchat spectacles on here but [TS]

01:32:31   everyone's calling that that's what [TS]

01:32:33   they're called like people calling them [TS]

01:32:34   that because the app is still called [TS]

01:32:35   snapchat and they only really work with [TS]

01:32:38   snapchat it's not wrong to call them [TS]

01:32:39   snapchat spectacles it's sort of wrong [TS]

01:32:42   to added that you can't it's not the [TS]

01:32:44   snapchats spectacles it's not you know [TS]

01:32:47   it doesn't belong to snapchat and be [TS]

01:32:49   snaps spectacles you're my entire [TS]

01:32:51   connection to snapchat I've installed [TS]

01:32:55   the app I looked at it I don't [TS]

01:32:56   understand it and then you have a column [TS]

01:32:58   of what a long while back earlier this [TS]

01:33:00   year which is what the hell is snapchat [TS]

01:33:01   and it was the first time it never made [TS]

01:33:03   sense to me and that is why I'm here [TS]

01:33:06   you've got a review out of the snapchat [TS]

01:33:07   spectacles I just before we get into the [TS]

01:33:09   spectacles I just want to say I saw this [TS]

01:33:11   thing on Twitter yesterday I forget who [TS]

01:33:13   it was I'm sorry if if I know you but [TS]

01:33:15   someone somewhere my twitter feed [TS]

01:33:17   someone was talking about [TS]

01:33:18   that they have a friend who has three [TS]

01:33:22   teenagers and at all they were in [TS]

01:33:24   andover thanksgiving that they were [TS]

01:33:26   together and and the topic came up that [TS]

01:33:28   everytime facebook / Instagram copies [TS]

01:33:33   something from snapchat it makes these [TS]

01:33:36   teenagers more brand attached to [TS]

01:33:41   snapchat that they they know what's [TS]

01:33:44   going on they see it and it makes them [TS]

01:33:46   rather than make them i'll just use [TS]

01:33:48   Instagram and snapchat it makes them [TS]

01:33:50   want to use snapchat more because they [TS]

01:33:52   see it as the rip-off that it is and the [TS]

01:33:54   end in specific context of this was that [TS]

01:33:58   instagram has added a snapchat like [TS]

01:34:04   feature of notifying you when somebody [TS]

01:34:06   you're communicating with takes a [TS]

01:34:08   screenshot of one of the ephemeral [TS]

01:34:11   things that you send them right right [TS]

01:34:15   yeah i mean and the whole stories [TS]

01:34:17   feature in Instagram which was added you [TS]

01:34:20   know a couple months ago is a complete [TS]

01:34:22   ripoff of snapchat right and I note some [TS]

01:34:25   degree that really did work because i [TS]

01:34:27   think it worked for people like you who [TS]

01:34:30   were just like why do i I've already in [TS]

01:34:32   instagram instagram used to be cool [TS]

01:34:35   I'm here and why should I go learn some [TS]

01:34:37   complicated snapchat thing and then you [TS]

01:34:40   know Instagram went and added snapchat [TS]

01:34:43   like stuff and people are like okay cool [TS]

01:34:44   yeah i think that it's you know like for [TS]

01:34:47   the teens that there everybody you know [TS]

01:34:48   they use snapchat is all their friends [TS]

01:34:50   are already on I don't need snapchat [TS]

01:34:51   because I I don't really like the [TS]

01:34:55   honestly I don't really care that much [TS]

01:34:56   about the Instagram what are they called [TS]

01:34:59   stories i've started checking them out a [TS]

01:35:02   little bit but i really don't pay [TS]

01:35:04   attention to them and anywhere near as [TS]

01:35:05   much as just my regular Instagram feet [TS]

01:35:08   yeah I mean yeah I i see them up there [TS]

01:35:12   and I like click on them and I'm just [TS]

01:35:14   like oh ok you know then but then you [TS]

01:35:16   end up seeing like the same photo [TS]

01:35:18   no it's um you know in your actual feed [TS]

01:35:20   know you posted on either i don't think [TS]

01:35:23   i've seen that [TS]

01:35:25   like once or twice and then I was like [TS]

01:35:28   why the hell am i doing this and yeah [TS]

01:35:30   stick for it doesn't stick for I've put [TS]

01:35:32   some in there but it's not surprising [TS]

01:35:34   that you haven't noticed them because [TS]

01:35:35   it's you know going that way right [TS]

01:35:38   anyway and I thought that was just [TS]

01:35:40   interesting though that in the least it [TS]

01:35:43   might be it might be giving some of the [TS]

01:35:46   benefits of snapchat the people who [TS]

01:35:48   haven't signed up for it like me when [TS]

01:35:49   I'm seeing these stories from the people [TS]

01:35:51   i follow on instagram but it doesn't you [TS]

01:35:53   know it's not doing anything to draw [TS]

01:35:55   teenagers and the people who are [TS]

01:35:57   snapchats core market away from snapchat [TS]

01:36:00   there anything that you know and again [TS]

01:36:02   it's anecdotal is one guy talking about [TS]

01:36:03   his friends three teenagers but it's [TS]

01:36:05   pretty interesting i thought yeah i mean [TS]

01:36:09   i think it makes sense i think that like [TS]

01:36:11   though and especially the brand's [TS]

01:36:13   awareness that's happened around these [TS]

01:36:15   glasses like the the scramble to get [TS]

01:36:19   them it they have this really strong [TS]

01:36:23   I'm you know just for better or worse [TS]

01:36:25   like cool coolness you know it and and I [TS]

01:36:30   think part of it is like they haven't [TS]

01:36:32   really caved to being this sort of like [TS]

01:36:35   mainstream place like they do have the [TS]

01:36:38   whole discover thing with all the brands [TS]

01:36:41   and stuff like that and they try to sort [TS]

01:36:42   of shut that down your face but there's [TS]

01:36:44   still the core of what snapchat is which [TS]

01:36:46   is you know building these stories are [TS]

01:36:48   sending your expiring photos and videos [TS]

01:36:50   yeah I did yeah I've been and and i [TS]

01:36:56   think since I've written that piece that [TS]

01:36:58   the piece about you know what is [TS]

01:36:59   snapchat and how to use it i feel like [TS]

01:37:01   many adults sort of either they sort of [TS]

01:37:04   just were like okay I get what it is now [TS]

01:37:07   but i'm not going to use it or they've [TS]

01:37:09   you know they've started to use it and [TS]

01:37:10   they've sort of just said this is a [TS]

01:37:12   place where there are our younger people [TS]

01:37:15   and their stuff to do here and I don't [TS]

01:37:16   really need to know what's happening [TS]

01:37:18   here is the thing and I don't I get it [TS]

01:37:22   now but I don't need to know it right [TS]

01:37:24   like it for me honestly it's like I [TS]

01:37:27   don't I don't want to hang out in a bar [TS]

01:37:29   where I'm 20 years older than everybody [TS]

01:37:31   else's [TS]

01:37:32   who's in the bar yeah I don't know that [TS]

01:37:35   I would go running away but i might just [TS]

01:37:37   you know finish [TS]

01:37:39   finished one drink and you know it love [TS]

01:37:42   it for some reason and I have a lot of [TS]

01:37:44   people in here that like our colleagues [TS]

01:37:46   or friends that are are similar age to [TS]

01:37:48   me for sure [TS]

01:37:50   um yeah I mean and but it's like it is [TS]

01:37:54   random things that you don't really have [TS]

01:37:55   to think that much about you know [TS]

01:37:57   Twitter I mean I'm kind of over Twitter [TS]

01:37:59   I need to like get get a twitter for a [TS]

01:38:01   little bit but yeah it's just like stuff [TS]

01:38:05   that you know you and then the filters [TS]

01:38:06   are fun you know the filters are really [TS]

01:38:08   fun to play where I'm with and even [TS]

01:38:11   though now for some of them are so [TS]

01:38:12   promotional for some of these companies [TS]

01:38:14   it's ridiculous but yeah it's the the [TS]

01:38:19   glasses are interesting because [TS]

01:38:20   obviously they've done what google glass [TS]

01:38:23   just never did which was make wearing a [TS]

01:38:26   camera super cool right everyone's such [TS]

01:38:29   an interesting comparison in so many [TS]

01:38:31   ways it from i have just a simple design [TS]

01:38:33   perspective of what they look like uh [TS]

01:38:36   how much they cost and you know honestly [TS]

01:38:40   I think it really comes down to the fact [TS]

01:38:42   that ok they announce these spectacles a [TS]

01:38:45   couple of weeks ago but that's not a a [TS]

01:38:47   vaporware announcement they're out now [TS]

01:38:51   right i mean there's people who have you [TS]

01:38:53   know the production ones are out in the [TS]

01:38:54   real world so it's not like you know but [TS]

01:38:57   whereas google glass was I forget with [TS]

01:38:59   google called it but it was you know for [TS]

01:39:01   ya the explorers program or something [TS]

01:39:03   like that and they were expensive and [TS]

01:39:05   they were just so weird and and I in so [TS]

01:39:10   many ways everything about it from the [TS]

01:39:12   mo much they cost what they look like to [TS]

01:39:15   do the envisioned usage of like [TS]

01:39:17   recording everything everywhere vs these [TS]

01:39:20   spectacles which are the design wise [TS]

01:39:23   there so obviously toys right and that [TS]

01:39:26   they're not to be taken seriously in any [TS]

01:39:29   way I can maybe that's just the bottom [TS]

01:39:30   line was that Google's google glass was [TS]

01:39:33   clearly meant to be taken seriously and [TS]

01:39:37   it I couldn't take it seriously but it [TS]

01:39:39   it was such an earnest device whereas [TS]

01:39:42   these things are just may have fun with [TS]

01:39:44   some sunglasses that have take 10 second [TS]

01:39:46   first videos or you know I mean totally [TS]

01:39:50   and I mean as and and I think they're [TS]

01:39:52   told [TS]

01:39:52   the awesome like I even though i was [TS]

01:39:54   totally frustrated with this experience [TS]

01:39:56   of trying to get them which led to this [TS]

01:39:58   funny story that I wrote about all these [TS]

01:40:00   people scrambling to go to these vending [TS]

01:40:02   machines to get these things I mean it's [TS]

01:40:03   totally insane [TS]

01:40:05   they're awesome because they're just so [TS]

01:40:07   simple right there and that was the [TS]

01:40:09   other thing about glasses like they were [TS]

01:40:11   trying to do all of this stuff they were [TS]

01:40:12   overlaying things they were it was all [TS]

01:40:15   this complicated technology to swipe [TS]

01:40:17   places there's voice control this is [TS]

01:40:19   just so simple that you that you just [TS]

01:40:23   feel like it's so easy to capture the [TS]

01:40:26   moment that you're looking at in the and [TS]

01:40:27   the point of view videos awesome i'm [TS]

01:40:29   obsessed with it to begin with and and [TS]

01:40:31   you know being able to like instantly [TS]

01:40:32   share it [TS]

01:40:33   although the the bluetooth pairing is a [TS]

01:40:35   bit of an issue and it just works it's [TS]

01:40:38   just like super easy and and works but [TS]

01:40:42   you know it's a lot of hype about [TS]

01:40:43   something that's really very simple [TS]

01:40:45   I what's your experience with like like [TS]

01:40:51   the quality of the video not that good [TS]

01:40:54   is it is it difficult in low-light I [TS]

01:40:57   mean what what is it what is the latest [TS]

01:40:58   low light is not good at all [TS]

01:41:00   I'm but like again their sunglasses so [TS]

01:41:03   when he really going to be wearing them [TS]

01:41:04   that much in low-light like I you I'd i [TS]

01:41:07   know i should the video my video this [TS]

01:41:09   week we shot pretty much like it's a [TS]

01:41:12   shot of me on the left-hand side with [TS]

01:41:13   our regular camera and then the shot [TS]

01:41:15   from the spectacles on the right-hand [TS]

01:41:17   side for most of the video and I mean [TS]

01:41:20   obviously the quality is just like you [TS]

01:41:22   can very much see the difference and I [TS]

01:41:24   you know my first idea for the video was [TS]

01:41:25   like let's shoot the whole video with [TS]

01:41:27   the spectacles and just when i started [TS]

01:41:29   watching the footage I was like nobody's [TS]

01:41:30   gonna watch more than a minute of this [TS]

01:41:32   like it's just not it's it's it's grainy [TS]

01:41:35   it's it's some of its blurry you I i saw [TS]

01:41:39   some people saying that they think it's [TS]

01:41:40   as good as an iphone i don't agree at [TS]

01:41:43   all even when you export it as HD [TS]

01:41:45   directly from the glasses into the app [TS]

01:41:47   and then directly to your phone [TS]

01:41:49   it does not look like a an iphone or a [TS]

01:41:52   good smartphone i think it's a clever [TS]

01:41:54   design choice to make them sunglasses [TS]

01:41:56   because that it it says this is you know [TS]

01:42:00   you can use them for everyone but [TS]

01:42:02   they're meant to be used outside where [TS]

01:42:03   there's daylight which [TS]

01:42:05   yeah huge difference furred you know a [TS]

01:42:07   camera that has you know trouble with [TS]

01:42:09   you know low-light totally and that was [TS]

01:42:12   the piece that i wrote this week which [TS]

01:42:13   was like these are really fun and [TS]

01:42:16   exciting and we should all be like we [TS]

01:42:18   should be excited about this kind of [TS]

01:42:20   thing it's it's it's an interesting way [TS]

01:42:21   of of taking a video and I wish it took [TS]

01:42:24   photos without shoving a phone in your [TS]

01:42:27   face right in somebody's face and like [TS]

01:42:29   the the clips I've captured of kids who [TS]

01:42:31   are sort of scared of of the phone or [TS]

01:42:33   you know sort of back away and get a [TS]

01:42:34   little shy and when when you stick the [TS]

01:42:36   phone in their face or even my dog my [TS]

01:42:38   dog knows about the phone you know he's [TS]

01:42:40   always like kind of like pushes it out [TS]

01:42:42   of the way right he doesn't like the [TS]

01:42:44   phone you got that kind of goes away [TS]

01:42:47   with these but there's still this there [TS]

01:42:50   is this stigma of being able to record [TS]

01:42:52   people when they don't know and and you [TS]

01:42:54   definitely can do that with these i had [TS]

01:42:56   i said the piece like I've recorded many [TS]

01:42:58   moments this week that people did not [TS]

01:43:00   know I was recording because you're not [TS]

01:43:02   holding a phone up and there's this year [TS]

01:43:04   the social norms around holding up a [TS]

01:43:06   phone people know you're recording [TS]

01:43:08   something something weird is happening [TS]

01:43:09   you sort of staring like there's one [TS]

01:43:11   situation i'm staring at a barista with [TS]

01:43:13   these sunglasses on [TS]

01:43:14   she's like what the you know she's [TS]

01:43:16   looking at me weird which is good [TS]

01:43:18   because she she notices that something [TS]

01:43:19   is different but also I don't think she [TS]

01:43:22   necessarily knew that there was video [TS]

01:43:23   recording you know maybe she thought I [TS]

01:43:26   was like shooting lasers in my I don't [TS]

01:43:29   know what you think she might have [TS]

01:43:30   thought but right I'm yeah it's really [TS]

01:43:33   interesting i dado that the piece ever [TS]

01:43:34   was that we sort of need to have some [TS]

01:43:36   rules around wearing cameras because [TS]

01:43:39   this is this is just the start of it [TS]

01:43:40   right like the augmented reality glasses [TS]

01:43:43   and the headsets are are are likely to [TS]

01:43:46   have cameras and we have to sort of we [TS]

01:43:50   need to be respectful of people with me [TS]

01:43:52   when we are putting these things on even [TS]

01:43:53   if they do look like fun [TS]

01:43:55   cool see ya especially as they become [TS]

01:43:57   more and more subtle [TS]

01:43:59   I mean these are you know he's right if [TS]

01:44:02   you're walking around indoors with these [TS]

01:44:04   it's obvious you've got to be if people [TS]

01:44:06   don't know what they are they just at [TS]

01:44:07   least know there's something [TS]

01:44:09   yeah exactly but it's not going to be [TS]

01:44:11   too long before you'll have classes that [TS]

01:44:14   could have a camera on them where you'd [TS]

01:44:16   really have to look closely to notice [TS]

01:44:18   that there's a camera [TS]

01:44:18   on them it's not going to be long you [TS]

01:44:22   know and it's not like you know like if [TS]

01:44:24   you strapped a GoPro to your head or or [TS]

01:44:27   lower like you do on some of your videos [TS]

01:44:29   when you strap an SLR your head and I'd [TS]

01:44:33   i tweeted about this yesterday the [TS]

01:44:35   spectacles cannot replace that know that [TS]

01:44:37   the technology of my helmet camera is [TS]

01:44:39   just far too good and the design is far [TS]

01:44:42   too good for me to replace them with [TS]

01:44:45   these toys on glass well it'll happen [TS]

01:44:47   soon though I mean just look at what [TS]

01:44:48   happened with the iphone right the [TS]

01:44:50   original iphone nine years ago didn't [TS]

01:44:53   even shoot video period [TS]

01:44:55   yeah which is crazy if you think about [TS]

01:44:58   it like he and I I've looked that there [TS]

01:45:01   have been several times over the years [TS]

01:45:02   when I thought wait am I misremembering [TS]

01:45:04   that maybe it's not really bad video and [TS]

01:45:06   then go back and it's like nope didn't [TS]

01:45:07   shoot video I so it went from shooting [TS]

01:45:10   no video to shooting really terrible [TS]

01:45:13   video to now shooting better video than [TS]

01:45:16   my then my twelve hundred dollar fuji [TS]

01:45:19   because it has image stabilization on [TS]

01:45:21   the video in the fuji doesn't and as [TS]

01:45:24   you're Fugees shoot 4k on that you [TS]

01:45:27   probably shoot that for much more k with [TS]

01:45:29   your iphone but i know but if i wanted [TS]

01:45:30   to i could which is you know kind of a [TS]

01:45:33   man right yeah i mean it definitely is [TS]

01:45:36   gonna happen and I think glasses are [TS]

01:45:38   things are going to be a egg at the next [TS]

01:45:41   big wave of what we see in this you know [TS]

01:45:44   whether be a RV our world and especially [TS]

01:45:49   ones that do look like very normal [TS]

01:45:52   glasses that look like you know the [TS]

01:45:54   warby parkers and and raybans so these [TS]

01:45:57   are a hundred and thirty bucks [TS]

01:45:58   do you think what what's the word on [TS]

01:46:01   availability like they gonna say like [TS]

01:46:03   there's no way that like they're going [TS]

01:46:05   to meet demand for the holidays [TS]

01:46:07   well you're you know how they're sort of [TS]

01:46:09   selling them in these pop-up vending [TS]

01:46:10   machines yeah yeah so I'm so that's how [TS]

01:46:13   I got into this story so I like I wanted [TS]

01:46:15   to I wanted to review these snapchat [TS]

01:46:18   said no review units you have to go to [TS]

01:46:20   these these vending machines and so you [TS]

01:46:22   know they started popping up mostly in [TS]

01:46:23   California a few times I asked them to [TS]

01:46:26   the wait in line and their the lines [TS]

01:46:27   were three or four five hours deep when [TS]

01:46:30   people with waiting in the lines [TS]

01:46:32   and not getting them i had a friend who [TS]

01:46:34   stood out in Venice for me or no sorry [TS]

01:46:37   Santa Monica they were the in line for [TS]

01:46:40   four hours never ended up getting them [TS]

01:46:41   you know snapchat has done an incredible [TS]

01:46:43   job apple-like job of creating hype [TS]

01:46:47   around these things with the lines with [TS]

01:46:49   the marketing its its it i mean it's [TS]

01:46:52   pretty incredible as a user it's totally [TS]

01:46:54   it's it's the worst it's really bad but [TS]

01:46:57   from when you look at it from a tech [TS]

01:46:59   company perspective the tech you know [TS]

01:47:01   industry perspective I don't know the [TS]

01:47:03   last time company has created this much [TS]

01:47:06   hype around of a gadget no other than [TS]

01:47:08   apple right so they've done that they've [TS]

01:47:11   really done that with these with these [TS]

01:47:13   things then and then there's the resale [TS]

01:47:14   market right because you could only get [TS]

01:47:16   these so i wrote this paint this front [TS]

01:47:18   page piece i wrote in a head for the [TS]

01:47:19   journal about these people who are going [TS]

01:47:21   to insane lengths to get to the vending [TS]

01:47:24   machines so they could buy the hundred [TS]

01:47:26   and thirty dollar glasses and quickly [TS]

01:47:27   flip them for ten times the price on [TS]

01:47:31   ebay right so I mean again [TS]

01:47:34   i I really don't think that there's any [TS]

01:47:36   comparison other than to apple totally I [TS]

01:47:39   mean and it like you know when I was I [TS]

01:47:41   started telling people about this and [TS]

01:47:42   they're like well isn't aren't the lines [TS]

01:47:44   basically just like Apple and you know [TS]

01:47:46   so well they are they definitely are but [TS]

01:47:48   the scarcity of it and the fact that [TS]

01:47:51   they're only releasing them in these [TS]

01:47:52   vending machines and random places it [TS]

01:47:56   was created madness I mean imagine if [TS]

01:47:57   Apple did that I mean if Apple did that [TS]

01:47:59   now would be totally madness right you [TS]

01:48:01   only could get your the new iphone i [TS]

01:48:03   mean that people would probably lying up [TS]

01:48:04   for for an apple product like one of [TS]

01:48:06   these probably this USBC dongle if it [TS]

01:48:09   was some sort of special thing you know [TS]

01:48:10   it only came from certain types of [TS]

01:48:12   vending machines and it was the only [TS]

01:48:13   thing you could get maybe the dongles [TS]

01:48:14   about example but whatever [TS]

01:48:17   so yeah they've done like this crazy [TS]

01:48:19   this crazy I mean I said it was you know [TS]

01:48:22   it's evan spiegel version of The Hunger [TS]

01:48:23   Games basically it's just like dropping [TS]

01:48:26   random in vending machines and random [TS]

01:48:29   parts of the country and seeing who who [TS]

01:48:31   goes to it a lot [TS]

01:48:33   it's a very simple product that's the [TS]

01:48:35   thing it and it's such a simple product [TS]

01:48:37   and it's something that's like the [TS]

01:48:39   technology has been around for years you [TS]

01:48:42   could buy these cameras you know a [TS]

01:48:44   hundred dollars on amazon for a [TS]

01:48:46   you know camcorder glasses you know what [TS]

01:48:49   get these things the only other guy I [TS]

01:48:50   thought of another example the other [TS]

01:48:52   example would be Tesla we're with the [TS]

01:48:54   i'm going to forget the name of their [TS]

01:48:56   upcoming mid you know 34 whatever the [TS]

01:48:59   mid-priced sedan is but ass [TS]

01:49:01   yeah there's at it then whatever it's [TS]

01:49:04   called the whatever the new one that's [TS]

01:49:05   that's not out for another two years and [TS]

01:49:08   they got so many pre-orders you know [TS]

01:49:10   that the little it was backed up people [TS]

01:49:12   who were you know signing up you know [TS]

01:49:14   again you have to pay the whole price [TS]

01:49:15   pre-order but tremendous tremendous you [TS]

01:49:18   know would get in line [TS]

01:49:20   buy it sight unseen brand awareness [TS]

01:49:22   right right [TS]

01:49:25   price-wise you know ya hundred and [TS]

01:49:26   thirty dollars sunglasses are a little [TS]

01:49:28   different than a fifty-thousand-dollar [TS]

01:49:29   car but still it just speaks though [TS]

01:49:32   to me it is a under may be undervalued [TS]

01:49:37   by many people at way to measure a brand [TS]

01:49:40   you know that there's very very as [TS]

01:49:44   always you can count them on one hand [TS]

01:49:45   the companies that can do something like [TS]

01:49:47   this [TS]

01:49:49   yeah I mean and you didn't really think [TS]

01:49:51   snapchat could but they have you know [TS]

01:49:53   and they're going to IPO soon and I [TS]

01:49:56   think it's something I think there's a [TS]

01:49:57   sedating company i do too and I think [TS]

01:49:59   again I don't I I'm you know I'm not an [TS]

01:50:01   expert on them i don't use the service [TS]

01:50:03   but I you know as a guy i am fascinated [TS]

01:50:05   and I do like reading stories about them [TS]

01:50:07   and to me the demand for this these [TS]

01:50:09   spectacles is a excellent i think it's [TS]

01:50:14   excellent news for anybody who's [TS]

01:50:15   involved with the IPO because to me that [TS]

01:50:17   sort of a brand awareness brand trust [TS]

01:50:19   Brandon thusi as it may be is the best [TS]

01:50:21   way to put it is is a valuable thing and [TS]

01:50:25   it's the sort of thing that that isn't [TS]

01:50:27   likely to dissipate quickly [TS]

01:50:29   yeah and i think you know it's funny [TS]

01:50:31   like we spend but an hour an hour and 55 [TS]

01:50:34   minutes talking about laptops right [TS]

01:50:36   snapchat has no presence on your [TS]

01:50:38   computer 19 and I have been less than [TS]

01:50:42   Instagram which at least has a website [TS]

01:50:43   that is you know more or less meant to [TS]

01:50:45   be used on it on a desktop computer and [TS]

01:50:48   its fat you know I make a video series [TS]

01:50:49   III do one video a week that basically [TS]

01:50:52   we do it does go on our platform but it [TS]

01:50:54   goes on snapchat and we have far more [TS]

01:50:55   viewers on snapchat for the for the [TS]

01:50:57   video [TS]

01:50:58   and we have anywhere else and you know [TS]

01:51:01   the the a that means that whatever i'm [TS]

01:51:02   doing is resonating with people on [TS]

01:51:04   snapchat which is great but it also just [TS]

01:51:06   means like people are so hungry to watch [TS]

01:51:08   these videos in this format and you know [TS]

01:51:11   I like i did that piece a couple months [TS]

01:51:12   ago on vertical video and I hope that [TS]

01:51:15   there will be some sort of solution down [TS]

01:51:16   down the road I actually you know these [TS]

01:51:18   these take up circular video which i [TS]

01:51:20   think is pretty cool how does not mean [TS]

01:51:23   at all on the dl but how does that work [TS]

01:51:25   on the desktop like if you just like it [TS]

01:51:27   just exports a circle so you like when [TS]

01:51:30   you open it like in quicktime player [TS]

01:51:31   whatever on your Mac it just plays in a [TS]

01:51:33   circle [TS]

01:51:34   yeah watch my video this week because we [TS]

01:51:36   like to do and did you see the circles [TS]

01:51:38   yes so the circle is actually what you [TS]

01:51:40   get [TS]

01:51:41   yeah like the the shots where there's [TS]

01:51:43   like the circle on white like there's [TS]

01:51:45   this circle in the middle and then wait [TS]

01:51:46   on the other side of it like a big polka [TS]

01:51:48   dot that's how it exports fascinating [TS]

01:51:50   and then as you're watching it the cool [TS]

01:51:52   thing is as you're watching it on the [TS]

01:51:53   phone [TS]

01:51:54   yeah you can watch watch join this video [TS]

01:51:56   you'll see it but as you rotate the [TS]

01:51:58   phone it just takes a rectangle within [TS]

01:52:00   the circle so if you're holding your [TS]

01:52:02   phone vertically it takes a vertical [TS]

01:52:05   rectangle within the circle and then as [TS]

01:52:07   you rotate it just you know you never [TS]

01:52:09   see you never see black bars it's always [TS]

01:52:11   fills the screen [TS]

01:52:12   yeah and win the weird thing is I get it [TS]

01:52:14   it's the framing with the glasses isn't [TS]

01:52:18   great like you don't really know like [TS]

01:52:20   that's where you could see like an [TS]

01:52:21   augmented-reality thing being very [TS]

01:52:23   helpful in these like if there was a way [TS]

01:52:24   to sort of be looking at your glasses [TS]

01:52:26   and say this is the center of your frame [TS]

01:52:28   you know we're like you know actually be [TS]

01:52:30   really cool if they showed you inside [TS]

01:52:32   where the circle really is no I'm [TS]

01:52:35   because like they're under a mountain of [TS]

01:52:36   many shots where I would like take a [TS]

01:52:37   shot at the dog and like half the dog [TS]

01:52:39   space was cut off [TS]

01:52:40   yeah like oh yeah like love to capture a [TS]

01:52:43   memory with you know half a child's face [TS]

01:52:45   in it but yeah I think like they're just [TS]

01:52:47   doing really interesting things around [TS]

01:52:49   video with interesting like that it you [TS]

01:52:51   know in the piece where it was a journal [TS]

01:52:53   magazine piece and evan spiegel [TS]

01:52:55   announced that he was making these and [TS]

01:52:57   renaming the company snap and he kept [TS]

01:53:00   saying that the company is now a camera [TS]

01:53:01   company it's interesting positioning I [TS]

01:53:05   keep thinking the company's much more of [TS]

01:53:07   a like a TV network or this or or [TS]

01:53:11   it's sort of more like the YouTube of of [TS]

01:53:14   mobile in my in my sort of thinking [TS]

01:53:17   about it but it seems like he's very set [TS]

01:53:20   on controlling the camera experience and [TS]

01:53:22   giving people interesting ways to use [TS]

01:53:24   their smartphone or now glasses camera [TS]

01:53:27   so makes you wonder what kind of other [TS]

01:53:29   camera products they're going to work on [TS]

01:53:31   but given that like today there's news [TS]

01:53:34   that GoPro just laid off fifteen percent [TS]

01:53:36   of their workforce so you know great [TS]

01:53:37   time to be in the camera business I'd I [TS]

01:53:41   think go pro I'm invited I'm not an [TS]

01:53:44   expert on that either but I think GoPro [TS]

01:53:45   has always been [TS]

01:53:46   I've always seen them as the next flip [TS]

01:53:49   remember the flip cameras totally [TS]

01:53:51   totally and it's I've never end whenever [TS]

01:53:55   I said that the people there they have [TS]

01:53:56   no no because blank blank and it's like [TS]

01:53:58   I don't everything you just said to me [TS]

01:54:00   doesn't make any sense to me they're [TS]

01:54:02   exactly like the flip where they you [TS]

01:54:05   know had a couple of good years because [TS]

01:54:06   they were ahead of the game but that [TS]

01:54:07   other you know there's there's nothing [TS]

01:54:09   to sustain it and I side already noticed [TS]

01:54:14   I see less people with GoPros at places [TS]

01:54:17   like the beach and stuff like that like [TS]

01:54:19   a couple years ago when know you know it [TS]

01:54:22   was like yeah I'll need safeway people [TS]

01:54:24   felt to you know take photos at the [TS]

01:54:26   beach I think now that we have at least [TS]

01:54:29   splash-proof phones i see a lot more [TS]

01:54:31   people who are willing to like you know [TS]

01:54:33   go knee deep in the water with the phone [TS]

01:54:34   in their hand to take a picture and you [TS]

01:54:36   know no longer need to have a go pro I [TS]

01:54:38   think I actually tweeted that during the [TS]

01:54:40   one of the event at the apple of the [TS]

01:54:42   iphone event it was like this is the [TS]

01:54:43   worst news for gopro right now this this [TS]

01:54:46   because I'm that way now like I don't [TS]

01:54:49   worry about using that i use my phone in [TS]

01:54:51   the shower on election night I i tweeted [TS]

01:54:54   that I was like I was legitimately in [TS]

01:54:56   the shower looking at CNN looking at the [TS]

01:54:59   expo I was like you know it it's it's [TS]

01:55:02   it's really you don't really even when [TS]

01:55:04   it was announced that this is gonna be [TS]

01:55:05   waterproof / 50 know it's all this fun [TS]

01:55:07   stuff we again I obviously did a lot of [TS]

01:55:08   the pool stuff or whatever but there's [TS]

01:55:10   just there's this huge level of anxiety [TS]

01:55:12   that just goes away [TS]

01:55:14   yeah and and especially the beach or the [TS]

01:55:17   pool or you know you're trying to get [TS]

01:55:20   your washing your dog or you're watching [TS]

01:55:22   your child and you don't really care [TS]

01:55:23   that the phone gets wet [TS]

01:55:24   and those were the times he would take [TS]

01:55:26   out the GoPro always been paranoid about [TS]

01:55:28   using my phone in the rain [TS]

01:55:30   honestly I've always been super paranoid [TS]

01:55:32   about you know scorching a whatever you [TS]

01:55:35   call it you know ruining the phone by [TS]

01:55:37   getting it wet even know like the [TS]

01:55:38   headphone jack has pointed has been on [TS]

01:55:41   the bottom for a while I don't know but [TS]

01:55:42   it's yeah you know I feel much better [TS]

01:55:44   now [TS]

01:55:44   anything else you want to talk about i [TS]

01:55:46   think we could wrap up otherwise unless [TS]

01:55:48   you have a topic now I think I'm you [TS]

01:55:51   know I'm so what am i doing about the [TS]

01:55:53   laptop back buying your old one [TS]

01:55:55   you're currently the fall you're not [TS]

01:55:58   buying my own because I don't want to [TS]

01:55:59   get a new one yet I wanted [TS]

01:56:00   I'm gonna hold onto in front of you [TS]

01:56:01   because you wouldn't have to make this [TS]

01:56:02   decision i mean i'm in the case where I [TS]

01:56:05   would eat i'm probably going to add that [TS]

01:56:06   this is a company laptop i might see if [TS]

01:56:09   we have any old pros hanging around and [TS]

01:56:12   it's not that it doesn't work it works [TS]

01:56:15   fine but I just need I need a little bit [TS]

01:56:17   more been doing more video stuff and [TS]

01:56:19   you've got to get rid of the non retina [TS]

01:56:20   screen it's a non retina screen is it is [TS]

01:56:23   the thing is going to recognize wrecked [TS]

01:56:26   by I i think that is how wall stud got [TS]

01:56:31   this next heir all set for the for the [TS]

01:56:34   apocalypse [TS]

01:56:35   you know I by the time he needs it in [TS]

01:56:37   the next macbook pros will be out it [TS]

01:56:41   it's it's really easy he's never going [TS]

01:56:43   to open that box because by the time the [TS]

01:56:45   time even would be tempted to its he's [TS]

01:56:47   he can get a macbook pro that will you [TS]

01:56:50   know in the dongle situation will be way [TS]

01:56:52   better Wi-Fi USB see everywhere mr. i [TS]

01:56:56   say at you know ultimately if you can [TS]

01:56:58   wait a little bit until the you know [TS]

01:57:00   USBC everywhere is a little bit closer [TS]

01:57:02   to the truth and maybe even one more [TS]

01:57:06   generation of these comes out it's [TS]

01:57:08   probably worth it but if you you know [TS]

01:57:10   really are desperate [TS]

01:57:11   I wouldn't hesitate to just get the [TS]

01:57:13   macbook pro touch bar right now if you [TS]

01:57:17   really need it if you can wait a year i [TS]

01:57:19   would wait here [TS]

01:57:20   yeah I guess I wait a year I'm curious [TS]

01:57:25   when the main event want to go on a long [TS]

01:57:27   discussion here but i'm curious when [TS]

01:57:29   because i know it's going to happen is [TS]

01:57:31   that the macbook air is going to go away [TS]

01:57:33   i think the fact that they didn't update [TS]

01:57:35   it at all is [TS]

01:57:37   shows that it's going to it's either [TS]

01:57:41   going to go away or Apple would like to [TS]

01:57:43   start dropping the actual price and sell [TS]

01:57:45   it for like seven ninety-nine instead of [TS]

01:57:47   999 but i don't think that they'll do [TS]

01:57:49   that I kind of think they're the mac is [TS]

01:57:51   a thing that like with the ipad they'll [TS]

01:57:53   keep dropping the price but i think the [TS]

01:57:54   mac is something where they want to [TS]

01:57:56   maintain the average selling price and I [TS]

01:57:58   think that's sooner rather than later [TS]

01:57:59   the macbook air will truly disappear and [TS]

01:58:03   the macbook will drop to 999 yeah and i [TS]

01:58:07   think there's a push to I think there's [TS]

01:58:10   a push to get people to buy those ipad [TS]

01:58:11   pros you know when you look at really [TS]

01:58:14   what you what you can do an interview [TS]

01:58:16   it's really the difference of an [TS]

01:58:17   operating system [TS]

01:58:19   yeah well in the prediction here's a [TS]

01:58:20   prediction with absolutely zero sourcing [TS]

01:58:22   whatsoever i don't have any inside [TS]

01:58:24   information on this but it's just my gut [TS]

01:58:25   feeling as to how Apple does stuff like [TS]

01:58:27   this is that sometime in the first half [TS]

01:58:31   of next year I don't know I don't [TS]

01:58:32   remember when the macbooks the regular [TS]

01:58:34   12 inch macbooks got updated last year i [TS]

01:58:37   think it was like April or May or [TS]

01:58:38   something like that [TS]

01:58:39   yeah maybe around that time again they [TS]

01:58:42   will update them and they will get the [TS]

01:58:45   touch bar and the one without the touch [TS]

01:58:50   bar will remain unchanged and drop in [TS]

01:58:54   price [TS]

01:58:54   I don't know that that's I don't think [TS]

01:58:55   they'll quite get rid of the air yet but [TS]

01:58:57   then like maybe like within the next 18 [TS]

01:58:59   months that device the macbook without [TS]

01:59:03   the touch bar will drop to 999 and are [TS]

01:59:06   there are some rumors about a new iPad [TS]

01:59:07   pro oh I think they'll def I think they [TS]

01:59:10   definitely do that in march and I don't [TS]

01:59:15   that long without updating the ipad pro [TS]

01:59:17   and they've already got this new what [TS]

01:59:19   are they up to now the 810 processor and [TS]

01:59:21   the iphone 7 whatever they call it [TS]

01:59:24   yeah a nine-year and whatever yeah and [TS]

01:59:27   I'll just put but they'll update i think [TS]

01:59:29   what they'll do is update both ipad pros [TS]

01:59:31   at the same time the big big one in a [TS]
