00:00:29   the incomparable number 237 mar 2015 we [TS]

00:00:38   began this journey in june of 2011 when [TS]

00:00:41   we watched a fine fine film called Star [TS]

00:00:45   Wars sometimes called star wars episode [TS]

00:00:47   for a new hope we conclude it now having [TS]

00:00:50   watched what is at least for now the [TS]

00:00:53   sixth and final star wars feature film [TS]

00:00:56   star wars episode 3 colon revenge of the [TS]

00:01:02   sith i believe i got the colon in the [TS]

00:01:04   right place that time I've gotten it [TS]

00:01:05   wrong everything holding is all over [TS]

00:01:07   this movie [TS]

00:01:08   yeah so 2005 fine a film that exists for [TS]

00:01:14   only this is it we're here we're going [TS]

00:01:18   to talk about Star Wars Episode three [TS]

00:01:20   and then say no more about the prequels [TS]

00:01:23   evermore joining me on this journey as [TS]

00:01:26   many many of them have been here for the [TS]

00:01:27   entire journey and i will introduce them [TS]

00:01:29   first [TS]

00:01:30   John siracusa hello want to go Jason go [TS]

00:01:35   serenity Caldwell hi there this is the [TS]

00:01:37   way Liberty dies Jason dan more'n hello [TS]

00:01:43   thus if they were avenging not good to [TS]

00:01:46   be here are one of our stalwart prequels [TS]

00:01:49   visitors Steve lots [TS]

00:01:52   what up my youngs this is where the fun [TS]

00:01:54   begins [TS]

00:01:55   this is this having fun begins I'm smart [TS]

00:01:58   and fun and then sort of semi [TS]

00:02:00   constipated semi Pete away [TS]

00:02:02   well you know Steve you're so beautiful [TS]

00:02:04   but that's only because you're in love [TS]

00:02:05   this is the message of a treat [TS]

00:02:08   wait no that's a better movie and also [TS]

00:02:10   joining us is andy not co hello i just [TS]

00:02:14   wanted to make sure it was really dead [TS]

00:02:16   that's why I needed watch this is very [TS]

00:02:19   very end [TS]

00:02:19   kill it with fire and we're tired of the [TS]

00:02:22   bodies and the headstones not just the [TS]

00:02:25   headstones nuke it from orbit the only [TS]

00:02:28   way to be sure ma so episode sorry [TS]

00:02:32   revenge of the sith I think we should [TS]

00:02:35   start as we always do by asking if [TS]

00:02:38   anybody has any opening statements [TS]

00:02:41   John in fact i do probably perhaps be [TS]

00:02:44   the last star wars opening statement cuz [TS]

00:02:46   i am I gonna have an opening statement [TS]

00:02:47   about episode 7 of course you will like [TS]

00:02:51   it will record right after we watch it I [TS]

00:02:53   don't know if all I did I did the math I [TS]

00:02:55   think we're probably gonna have to do [TS]

00:02:56   like 10 episodes about episode 17 span [TS]

00:02:59   of about we may do daily episodes in [TS]

00:03:01   December one of the might just be drawn [TS]

00:03:03   Syracuse's opening statements episode [TS]

00:03:05   just like that one and then we'll move [TS]

00:03:07   on to the conversation later but I enjoy [TS]

00:03:09   having a newsreel 4 episode center this [TS]

00:03:11   is your daily news rail update of [TS]

00:03:13   episode 7 this is what John siracusa [TS]

00:03:15   feels about this on day five day yes [TS]

00:03:17   it's just like these movies we've [TS]

00:03:19   existed for so long that it [TS]

00:03:21   yeah I can have opening statements about [TS]

00:03:23   them because I've had a long time to [TS]

00:03:24   think about behind about episode 7 but [TS]

00:03:26   anyway here we go for this one so the [TS]

00:03:30   final movies in a trilogy they usually [TS]

00:03:33   have a couple of advantages I mean most [TS]

00:03:36   obviously you're anxious to find out how [TS]

00:03:38   it all ends right [TS]

00:03:39   episode 3 of course is undercut here by [TS]

00:03:42   being part of a prequel trilogy we all [TS]

00:03:44   know how it's gonna end we know who [TS]

00:03:45   lives we know dies we know where [TS]

00:03:47   everybody ends up so that's kind of a [TS]

00:03:48   bummer for drama and this movie [TS]

00:03:51   ah the last movie trilogy also usually [TS]

00:03:53   benefits from having the audience be [TS]

00:03:55   familiar with and have some affection [TS]

00:03:57   for the characters episodes freeze [TS]

00:03:59   undercut here by the previous two movies [TS]

00:04:01   sort of failing to make these characters [TS]

00:04:03   into real people that we actually care [TS]

00:04:04   about i think this is also compounded by [TS]

00:04:07   the first movie using a child actor for [TS]

00:04:09   Anakin I which means we've only really [TS]

00:04:11   had one movie with this version of [TS]

00:04:13   mannequin and also by the way thing [TS]

00:04:14   about this its kind of damning that the [TS]

00:04:16   child Anakin and the adult Anakin seem [TS]

00:04:18   like such completely separate characters [TS]

00:04:20   like I don't even connect them at all in [TS]

00:04:21   my mind and I don't like either one of [TS]

00:04:23   them anyway [TS]

00:04:24   well there's a connection ya know that [TS]

00:04:26   episode 3 has none of these advantages [TS]

00:04:29   that a final movie series usually has [TS]

00:04:31   and after two movies of treading water [TS]

00:04:32   on the question that should be [TS]

00:04:34   motivating the entire prequel trilogy [TS]

00:04:35   that is how did the good man whose looks [TS]

00:04:37   father become Darth Vader it can be [TS]

00:04:39   really hard for one movie 2 / to provide [TS]

00:04:41   a convincing answer that even the best [TS]

00:04:43   case and given this is the same group of [TS]

00:04:46   people who brought us the first two [TS]

00:04:47   prequels this is not the best-case [TS]

00:04:48   that's worst-case [TS]

00:04:50   as I said in the episode to podcast i [TS]

00:04:52   initially held out hope that episode 2 [TS]

00:04:54   would sort of learned from the lessons [TS]

00:04:55   of episode 1 and take them to heart and [TS]

00:04:58   rise above episode 12 actually be a [TS]

00:05:00   semi-decent movie by the end of episode [TS]

00:05:02   2 i'd lost all hope and had begun to [TS]

00:05:04   think of the next movie and in series [TS]

00:05:06   under the title in which it is [TS]

00:05:07   permanently filed away in my mind [TS]

00:05:08   star wars episode 3 let's get this over [TS]

00:05:11   with [TS]

00:05:12   so is it true that basically episode 3 [TS]

00:05:15   is legless armless on a lava flow while [TS]

00:05:18   you hold out your hand and beg for it [TS]

00:05:20   one last time to turn away from the [TS]

00:05:22   darkside with episode 3 was not supposed [TS]

00:05:24   to be the chosen I knew it would not be [TS]

00:05:26   chosen what I knew from the very [TS]

00:05:27   beginning I am picturing John yelling [TS]

00:05:29   that though we were friends we were [TS]

00:05:33   brothers [TS]

00:05:33   hi Jason I've got an opening stage [TS]

00:05:37   alright Oh minor openings i know i'm [TS]

00:05:39   breaking tradition here but I'm gonna do [TS]

00:05:41   it because here's the thing that drives [TS]

00:05:43   me absolutely insane about episode 3 is [TS]

00:05:47   that there are hints of a potentially [TS]

00:05:49   good movie here which is to say well now [TS]

00:05:52   hear me out [TS]

00:05:53   opening statement sorry I'm please play [TS]

00:05:55   the opening statement gambit here where [TS]

00:05:57   we can't stop her she is placed over the [TS]

00:06:00   night I know everybody's gonna talk over [TS]

00:06:02   me for like the second half pound is [TS]

00:06:04   happening now I'm taking it now [TS]

00:06:06   alright so the first two movies are crap [TS]

00:06:09   in all bought wide variety of different [TS]

00:06:12   ways that we have spoken up here but if [TS]

00:06:15   each of the first two movies there are [TS]

00:06:17   never scenes where I'm like yeah that [TS]

00:06:19   almost kind of works pretty much every [TS]

00:06:21   scene in the first two movies I'm like [TS]

00:06:22   no this is just this is just terrible [TS]

00:06:25   there's no there are no there's no [TS]

00:06:27   potential redeeming factor here the the [TS]

00:06:29   thing that drives me crazy about episode [TS]

00:06:31   3 especially watch re-watching it i [TS]

00:06:34   rewatched it tonight after having two [TS]

00:06:37   thirds of the clone wars under my belt [TS]

00:06:39   the clone wars animated series is that [TS]

00:06:41   there is the potential for power here in [TS]

00:06:44   seeing how the Republic Falls not even [TS]

00:06:47   seeing how Anakin becomes Darth Vader [TS]

00:06:48   but in seeing how the Republic falls in [TS]

00:06:50   seeing how Palpatine basically engulfs [TS]

00:06:53   the entirety of the Senate and to a [TS]

00:06:56   certain extent seeing how Anakin false [TS]

00:06:58   and there are little bits like there are [TS]

00:07:01   there are bits of shining light in this [TS]

00:07:03   mood [TS]

00:07:03   except as soon as the the door starts to [TS]

00:07:06   open and you were like maybe I'm in a [TS]

00:07:08   good movie [TS]

00:07:09   it shuts closed and spent like there are [TS]

00:07:11   specific scenes which i'll probably [TS]

00:07:13   mentioned when once we go through the [TS]

00:07:15   the film where I'm like oh this actually [TS]

00:07:18   has some emotional impact [TS]

00:07:19   oh I'm actually am i invested in this [TS]

00:07:21   movie here am i actually feeling [TS]

00:07:23   emotions and then as soon as I i get [TS]

00:07:26   that sort of glimmer of like oh I'm [TS]

00:07:28   actually invested in this movie the [TS]

00:07:30   movie reminds me just happy it is again [TS]

00:07:32   and that drives me so crazy I like oh I [TS]

00:07:36   can actually feel passion for know maybe [TS]

00:07:39   no maybe know and right at the end [TS]

00:07:43   no no not want interested in but side [TS]

00:07:49   note to people who listen to the show [TS]

00:07:50   life we are opening the no drinking game [TS]

00:07:53   so you take one shot or one beer every [TS]

00:07:55   time someone makes the no joke have a [TS]

00:07:58   lot of boosting but yeah i am i'm so [TS]

00:08:01   glad that i have a giant bottle of [TS]

00:08:03   whiskey here [TS]

00:08:04   ya know i am no social yeah alright so [TS]

00:08:11   in in conclusion I everytime i watch [TS]

00:08:14   episode 3i get more and more frustrated [TS]

00:08:16   because there could have been a good [TS]

00:08:20   movie here they did learn a couple of [TS]

00:08:22   things from episode 1 episode 2 there [TS]

00:08:24   are scenes in here that almost works [TS]

00:08:26   there is one scene that I think actually [TS]

00:08:28   is perfectly sold in otherwise terribly [TS]

00:08:30   crappy movie and it just it infuriates [TS]

00:08:34   me especially when we have something as [TS]

00:08:36   good as the clone wars basically now [TS]

00:08:38   proceeding it all right any other [TS]

00:08:41   opening statements [TS]

00:08:42   yeah i got a quick 1i think i said at [TS]

00:08:44   the tail end of the episode to podcast [TS]

00:08:46   that you should be excited for episode 3 [TS]

00:08:48   because this is the good one in case [TS]

00:08:51   that wasn't abundantly clear that was [TS]

00:08:53   just a joke and ok there is no good one [TS]

00:08:56   and if you accidentally thought that I [TS]

00:08:59   was serious and there was a good one and [TS]

00:09:00   you went and watched this film thinking [TS]

00:09:02   that perhaps that you would be in for a [TS]

00:09:06   decent film i am deeply and hardly sorry [TS]

00:09:08   ru ru revising your previous remarks [TS]

00:09:11   about episode 3 i'm clarifying is [TS]

00:09:14   obvious but sometimes you know it [TS]

00:09:16   entirely clear when I'm not being [TS]

00:09:18   serious so sorry folks [TS]

00:09:21   yeah dan I was gonna mention so I i saw [TS]

00:09:25   this movie in the theater in 2005 which [TS]

00:09:27   I realizes is now 10 years ago I have [TS]

00:09:29   not seen it since then I'll and I know a [TS]

00:09:32   lot at the time as people have alluded [TS]

00:09:34   to it was kind of help that like alright [TS]

00:09:36   maybe this one will finally be good if [TS]

00:09:39   anybody again like Steve said if anybody [TS]

00:09:42   is laboring under that misapprehension I [TS]

00:09:44   would contend perhaps they have not seen [TS]

00:09:46   this movie in a while [TS]

00:09:47   in some ways episode 1 you know has the [TS]

00:09:50   the harshest time of it because it was [TS]

00:09:52   the one that was expected by this point [TS]

00:09:54   in the prequel trilogy the bar has been [TS]

00:09:56   set so episode 1i thinking in contrast [TS]

00:10:00   with episodes two and three in some ways [TS]

00:10:02   doesn't do is badly you know in the with [TS]

00:10:04   the benefit of hindsight because without [TS]

00:10:06   all that hype building it up over all [TS]

00:10:08   those years it's merely a really crappy [TS]

00:10:10   movie as opposed to being like a [TS]

00:10:13   travesty episode 3 I don't think [TS]

00:10:15   necessarily has that it was not helped [TS]

00:10:19   in any way by that because you know by [TS]

00:10:20   the time it came out weird experience to [TS]

00:10:22   really crappy movies so if i had to pick [TS]

00:10:25   one of all three these movies to be the [TS]

00:10:27   best I would actually stabbed myself [TS]

00:10:29   because that is preferable none of these [TS]

00:10:32   are good so i will wrong argument i will [TS]

00:10:35   just say that I agree that the clone [TS]

00:10:38   wars TV show it shows a great example of [TS]

00:10:41   how this same automatic story could be [TS]

00:10:44   told much better and I'm will be glad to [TS]

00:10:49   see the end of this entire trilogy and [TS]

00:10:52   look forward to wiping the slate clean [TS]

00:10:55   i also have an opening statement oh my [TS]

00:10:56   god everybody this is the opening [TS]

00:10:59   statement partisan will include [TS]

00:11:01   conversation but this is the opening [TS]

00:11:02   statement episode will record that a [TS]

00:11:04   lady please go ahead Andy well I just as [TS]

00:11:07   a teaser for a comment that might come [TS]

00:11:09   later in the show i have one very real [TS]

00:11:12   reason to be grateful to episode 3 but [TS]

00:11:14   let's leave that as a teaser for her for [TS]

00:11:15   later I will say that I semi enjoyed [TS]

00:11:20   episode 1 because i thought it had a [TS]

00:11:22   really great ending not just the fact [TS]

00:11:24   that it ended and [TS]

00:11:26   knowing that there's going to be two [TS]

00:11:28   more movies after this and this is just [TS]

00:11:29   setting the stage I had faith through [TS]

00:11:32   episode 2 saying that well this is its [TS]

00:11:35   episode 2 so it is the middle part of [TS]

00:11:37   the trilogy it has to carry a lot of [TS]

00:11:39   water for the entire trilogy and set up [TS]

00:11:41   the finale the finale there i'm reminded [TS]

00:11:45   of a of a joke from pdq bach if you're [TS]

00:11:48   familiar with pdq bach that's a cake for [TS]

00:11:50   real composer who keeps pretending to [TS]

00:11:52   keep discovering lost works from a [TS]

00:11:55   really bad baroque composer and he says [TS]

00:11:57   every time we discover a new piece by [TS]

00:11:59   pdq bach it's always with a great sense [TS]

00:12:01   of anticipation because we feel like [TS]

00:12:03   this new piece can't possibly be as bad [TS]

00:12:05   as the others that we found and [TS]

00:12:07   nonetheless and so but it becomes it and [TS]

00:12:12   there's a ton of this is a point in the [TS]

00:12:13   car crash where you're just gonna have [TS]

00:12:15   to find some good to say that well I've [TS]

00:12:17   never had an airbag deployed before it [TS]

00:12:19   might be an interesting experience to [TS]

00:12:21   talk about later you may as well by the [TS]

00:12:23   third ticket i don't think it was as bad [TS]

00:12:25   as I I'm like damn like I think this is [TS]

00:12:28   must be the third time I've seen the [TS]

00:12:29   movie lifetime which is incredible to [TS]

00:12:32   for me to say about a Star Wars movie [TS]

00:12:34   it's not as bad as five years of hearing [TS]

00:12:38   people talk about the movie has set me [TS]

00:12:40   up for but it was still pretty not great [TS]

00:12:44   just add one thing the Andes point about [TS]

00:12:47   like not even see a long time I just [TS]

00:12:48   realize i saw episode one in the theater [TS]

00:12:50   in the first 24 hours more time and more [TS]

00:12:53   times than I've seen this intense [TS]

00:12:55   telling its tellin ya it is i can't i [TS]

00:12:58   can't remember anything like I could [TS]

00:13:00   remember half the scenes from this movie [TS]

00:13:01   and that should tell you something that [TS]

00:13:02   I remember the I've only seen this movie [TS]

00:13:05   this is the third or second and a half [TS]

00:13:07   time I've seen this movie because I [TS]

00:13:09   attempted to watch this [TS]

00:13:11   I want to say in 2007 when I was stuck [TS]

00:13:14   in ithaca for a summer and i had i watch [TS]

00:13:16   the entirety of the matrix trilogy and [TS]

00:13:18   I'm like you know what I'm gonna I'm [TS]

00:13:20   gonna get through the prequels haha [TS]

00:13:23   I've recalibrated my sensor 20 by seeing [TS]

00:13:26   the entire matrix trilogy i can now [TS]

00:13:28   reevaluate was just like you know at the [TS]

00:13:31   matrix trilogy deeply flawed but you [TS]

00:13:34   know at least washable when you're stuck [TS]

00:13:36   in a basement [TS]

00:13:38   were you thinking that was something [TS]

00:13:39   that was impact on my back in the box to [TS]

00:13:41   dip their did your father or the mob [TS]

00:13:43   some money or something [TS]

00:13:44   unlike the prequels the matrix trilogy [TS]

00:13:46   does contain a good movie [TS]

00:13:48   yeah it does contain one good movie and [TS]

00:13:50   one-half arguably but yeah yeah yeah so [TS]

00:13:52   there's you know I'm like I have nowhere [TS]

00:13:54   else to go my car's broken i'm just [TS]

00:13:56   gonna I'm gonna watch terrible movies i [TS]

00:13:58   could not get through 10 minutes of this [TS]

00:13:59   film the only way I got through it [TS]

00:14:01   tonight was by watching it 2x speed [TS]

00:14:03   which by the way I actually recommend if [TS]

00:14:05   you're ever going to watch the prequels [TS]

00:14:06   again [TS]

00:14:07   interesting I to have an opening remark [TS]

00:14:10   I know it's kyle i thought this would be [TS]

00:14:12   totally crazy for the hosts have an [TS]

00:14:14   opening statement then everybody did an [TS]

00:14:15   opening statement [TS]

00:14:16   John siracusa has started a tradition [TS]

00:14:19   apparently my own statement i like damn [TS]

00:14:22   i want to say i have only seen this [TS]

00:14:23   movie before yesterday only seen it once [TS]

00:14:25   i saw it in the theater actually saw it [TS]

00:14:27   in the theater in boston massachusetts [TS]

00:14:29   where i was before the last I want to [TS]

00:14:32   say macworld expo I don't know if the [TS]

00:14:34   2005 macworld expo was the last one in [TS]

00:14:37   Boston but anyway I was there for that [TS]

00:14:39   and I had a free day and episode 3 came [TS]

00:14:42   out so I watched it and then never [TS]

00:14:44   watched it again and i think that is I [TS]

00:14:46   don't know whether it's a commentary on [TS]

00:14:47   the movie or on the prequels being kind [TS]

00:14:50   of this obligatory thing that leads to [TS]

00:14:53   like why I gotta see em all but then [TS]

00:14:56   once they're done I don't need to see [TS]

00:14:57   them again but I've revisited episode 1 [TS]

00:14:59   and even episode 2 cents a few times [TS]

00:15:01   episode 3 never I don't know what that [TS]

00:15:03   means my big statement we will [TS]

00:15:05   definitely talk about this some more is [TS]

00:15:07   i want to mention the plight of the [TS]

00:15:10   character of darth vader i refer you to [TS]

00:15:13   Darth Vader as the character from the [TS]

00:15:16   original trilogy not the character of [TS]

00:15:18   Anakin Skywalker who assumes the the [TS]

00:15:22   name Darth Vader midway through episode [TS]

00:15:24   3 we constantly assigned that [TS]

00:15:27   from apparently out of a hat I will you [TS]

00:15:29   know Taranis that was Vader's the name [TS]

00:15:32   midi-chlorians told him terrenas and [TS]

00:15:35   Plagueis and I insidious so insidious [TS]

00:15:39   and the rest were taken so the next one [TS]

00:15:41   in the dimness like thesaurus is data I [TS]

00:15:44   guess is there a Darth gumdrop over [TS]

00:15:46   there or did they just always just go to [TS]

00:15:48   that same section of the dictionary drop [TS]

00:15:50   was not the most successful set it turns [TS]

00:15:53   out he darted bad stuff Lance yeah yeah [TS]

00:15:57   Darth fighting guy so I mentioned Darth [TS]

00:16:00   Vader because I feel like one of the [TS]

00:16:01   core problems with that I have with this [TS]

00:16:03   movie and with the entire prequel [TS]

00:16:04   trilogy is it's hard for me to connect [TS]

00:16:08   the Darth Vader we see in the original [TS]

00:16:09   trilogy with this character in this [TS]

00:16:12   character [TS]

00:16:13   not only does not end up in a place that [TS]

00:16:15   I feel really connects to where Darth [TS]

00:16:17   Vader is in the in the original trilogy [TS]

00:16:19   but more to the point I feel like the [TS]

00:16:21   fall of Anakin Skywalker does not map to [TS]

00:16:25   who at who either Darth Vader is in the [TS]

00:16:29   original trilogy or who I choose to [TS]

00:16:31   believe Darth Vader is in the original [TS]

00:16:33   trilogy and I think that's a fundamental [TS]

00:16:34   problem with the prequels that is the [TS]

00:16:37   fundamental problem with episode 3 so [TS]

00:16:39   that's my kingdom by which you mean he's [TS]

00:16:41   not played by James Earl Jones sir james [TS]

00:16:45   earl jones in there [TS]

00:16:46   I just I i will I think we'll talk about [TS]

00:16:48   it more but I feel like mannequins [TS]

00:16:50   descent as we go through it is not [TS]

00:16:52   fitting of where Darth Vader ends up [TS]

00:16:55   because it's really dumb [TS]

00:16:57   it's that it's not sensible in anyway [TS]

00:16:59   doctor is oscillating and evil and [TS]

00:17:02   Anakin Skywalker is just kind of a chump [TS]

00:17:05   but i will say as evil as as Vader is in [TS]

00:17:08   the original trilogy i had not [TS]

00:17:09   envisioned him slicing of a bunch of [TS]

00:17:11   kids in the prequel trilogy [TS]

00:17:13   well that's to show that he's really [TS]

00:17:15   evil Steve otherwise you would know I [TS]

00:17:18   don't like I would like to think that [TS]

00:17:20   Anakin makes a series of terrible [TS]

00:17:23   choices to take the cheap and easy way [TS]

00:17:25   towards whatever as opposed to know he [TS]

00:17:29   was just easily use very easily [TS]

00:17:30   bamboozled by the sucker [TS]

00:17:32   he's a sucker it is not that bright no [TS]

00:17:35   yeah that's right [TS]

00:17:36   typing the chosen answer but not that [TS]

00:17:39   bright you know in spaceballs when [TS]

00:17:40   they're like [TS]

00:17:40   because good is dumb it turns out the [TS]

00:17:43   evil is also is dumb [TS]

00:17:45   alright should we should we recap this [TS]

00:17:48   movie should i watch likes him off [TS]

00:17:49   already home [TS]

00:17:50   war war that's my heart like to what are [TS]

00:17:53   you doing I was right huh [TS]

00:17:55   absolutely nothing say it again least it [TS]

00:17:57   doesn't say taxation this time riding [TS]

00:18:00   anyone living or less than making access [TS]

00:18:02   ID make it let me scroll exciting what's [TS]

00:18:05   its water it's time we go to war [TS]

00:18:08   negotiations sure nothing is more [TS]

00:18:11   exciting than ! and we get one right off [TS]

00:18:14   the bat heated debate you gotta give it [TS]

00:18:16   to him [TS]

00:18:17   they got they got the X ! in that I i [TS]

00:18:20   was going to say about this the thing [TS]

00:18:22   that bugs me about this is like one of [TS]

00:18:23   the like second lines or something is [TS]

00:18:25   there are heroes on both sides like know [TS]

00:18:27   there are there are there that earlier [TS]

00:18:30   of the war the other side is evil the [TS]

00:18:32   evil side doesn't get heroes those are [TS]

00:18:34   called villains George their villainous [TS]

00:18:35   right like they did they got off with [TS]

00:18:37   the war and then immediately sabotage [TS]

00:18:39   themselves with their heroes on both [TS]

00:18:40   sides like wait what [TS]

00:18:42   like can't we just have a single black [TS]

00:18:44   and cool where everyone is awesome [TS]

00:18:46   watching this to get the sense that like [TS]

00:18:47   some of the people working on this we're [TS]

00:18:49   working off the script with the salmon [TS]

00:18:50   pages and the other people working on [TS]

00:18:52   this off the script the blue pages and [TS]

00:18:54   the people working out the script with [TS]

00:18:55   yellow pages [TS]

00:18:56   it's a bit jumbled isn't it yeah but it [TS]

00:18:58   might give you something for me is our [TS]

00:19:00   is is the script does this scroll think [TS]

00:19:02   that the people reading the scroll don't [TS]

00:19:04   know that Palpatine is Darth Sidious [TS]

00:19:05   don't move the whole trilogy is kinda [TS]

00:19:08   predicated on that and get the whole [TS]

00:19:10   trilogy is predicated on people not [TS]

00:19:12   really realizing that which is [TS]

00:19:14   transparent from the beginning right but [TS]

00:19:16   like it was a third movie and they're [TS]

00:19:18   saying like opacity Chancellor Palpatine [TS]

00:19:20   was get like we're following is it isn't [TS]

00:19:22   a scroll talking to the audience we know [TS]

00:19:24   that he city is like why are you [TS]

00:19:25   pretending to make any sense well that's [TS]

00:19:27   the weird thing that you can learn from [TS]

00:19:29   those the clone wars thing not to drink [TS]

00:19:30   drank too much of that into it but like [TS]

00:19:32   nobody else aside from like Count Dooku [TS]

00:19:34   knows the dark cities and Chancellor [TS]

00:19:36   Palpatine are the same person so like [TS]

00:19:38   General Grievous in theory does not know [TS]

00:19:40   that which would make that interesting [TS]

00:19:42   but it's not communicated the movie [TS]

00:19:43   anywhere it is not nor nor are we really [TS]

00:19:47   dealing with the fact like Palpatine in [TS]

00:19:50   this movie and Palpatine throughout the [TS]

00:19:52   clone wars could have been perceived as [TS]

00:19:54   you know that Jedi mind trick that you [TS]

00:19:56   see in the original series where the [TS]

00:19:58   weak-willed can be controlled by [TS]

00:19:59   somebody with a stronger mind turns out [TS]

00:20:02   that's Palpatine's big power is that he [TS]

00:20:04   can control people who should not [TS]

00:20:06   otherwise be able to fall under the [TS]

00:20:08   control of Jedi mind tricks and if you [TS]

00:20:10   assume that a lot of things seem more [TS]

00:20:15   interesting that was work a lot better [TS]

00:20:18   yeah they were disgusting or if you [TS]

00:20:21   could do that to the audience I didn't [TS]

00:20:22   have to invent whole cloth that's that's [TS]

00:20:25   such a sign of a movie that's not [TS]

00:20:26   working when you find yourself writing a [TS]

00:20:28   better movie in its place [TS]

00:20:30   yeah that was doing that so often during [TS]

00:20:32   this movie [TS]

00:20:33   yes and that's what frustrates me so the [TS]

00:20:36   cross suffers from a lot of the same [TS]

00:20:37   problem as the rest of the writing in [TS]

00:20:39   this script which i will call [TS]

00:20:41   declarative sentence disease which is to [TS]

00:20:44   say every single line of dialogue is I [TS]

00:20:46   want this this is that that is this and [TS]

00:20:49   it's like all right so we don't know how [TS]

00:20:51   to write let me take a break and tell [TS]

00:20:53   you about Casper you've heard about them [TS]

00:20:56   here before I am a satisfied customer of [TS]

00:20:59   casper and let me tell you why [TS]

00:21:00   Casper's an online retailer of premium [TS]

00:21:03   mattresses are available for a fraction [TS]

00:21:05   of the price [TS]

00:21:06   get away from the mattress industry with [TS]

00:21:08   forcing customers into paying [TS]

00:21:09   notoriously hi markups these our tech [TS]

00:21:12   guys who are trying to revolutionize the [TS]

00:21:14   mattress industry by cutting the cost of [TS]

00:21:15   dealing with resellers and showrooms and [TS]

00:21:18   passing that savings on to you this is [TS]

00:21:20   an obsessively engineered mattress at a [TS]

00:21:22   really great price it offers just the [TS]

00:21:24   right sink just the right balance [TS]

00:21:26   because it's using two different [TS]

00:21:27   technologies there's a latex foam and [TS]

00:21:29   there's memory foam and they seamlessly [TS]

00:21:31   put them together and you end up with an [TS]

00:21:34   amazing sleep experience [TS]

00:21:37   I'm not just reading ad copy when I tell [TS]

00:21:38   you this folks I sleep on Casper [TS]

00:21:41   mattress every night we have gotten rid [TS]

00:21:43   of our old mattress without a new bed [TS]

00:21:44   and we have our new Casper mattress it's [TS]

00:21:47   amazing what's even more amazing [TS]

00:21:48   risk-free trial try sleeping on a Casper [TS]

00:21:51   for up to 100 days there's free delivery [TS]

00:21:54   painless returns so you can try it out [TS]

00:21:56   and if you don't like this space-age [TS]

00:21:58   internet mattress you can return it it's [TS]

00:22:01   made in America $500 for a twin 954 a [TS]

00:22:05   king [TS]

00:22:06   you could probably extrapolate the [TS]

00:22:07   prices [TS]

00:22:08   between you compare that to the industry [TS]

00:22:09   averages that's actually a really really [TS]

00:22:12   good price so Casper it's a revolution a [TS]

00:22:14   revolution in construction in sales and [TS]

00:22:16   let me tell you it's a revelation huh [TS]

00:22:19   see what I did there it when you sleep [TS]

00:22:21   on it which I've been doing for the last [TS]

00:22:22   few months it's really great and I say [TS]

00:22:25   that there's nobody holding a gun to my [TS]

00:22:27   head when i tell you i really enjoy the [TS]

00:22:29   castro mattress I'm so glad that we got [TS]

00:22:40   know if you need the www not so you [TS]

00:22:43   could try Casper calm / and comfortable [TS]

00:22:45   see if that works too [TS]

00:22:46   importantly use promo code and [TS]

00:22:48   comfortable to get your fifty dollars [TS]

00:22:50   off that will let you know that we sent [TS]

00:22:51   you and thanks to Casper for sponsoring [TS]

00:22:53   the uncomfortable okay back to star wars [TS]

00:22:56   i am excited to have another big villain [TS]

00:22:59   introduced in the crawl that we neither [TS]

00:23:00   know nor care i'm doing better movie [TS]

00:23:03   interview indeed had also why did the [TS]

00:23:06   droids into a droid leader he's only [TS]

00:23:08   partially dried Steve not behind no [TS]

00:23:10   natural yeah I know yeah I'll its [TS]

00:23:12   organic which is also unclear his [TS]

00:23:14   wheezing lungs his heart and his I [TS]

00:23:16   George why does this robot have [TS]

00:23:17   emphysema you tellin you would you know [TS]

00:23:20   that if you saw the clone wars animated [TS]

00:23:21   series [TS]

00:23:22   yeah how do we watch every inch counts [TS]

00:23:24   the clone wars animated series it was [TS]

00:23:26   clearly made by better people in this [TS]

00:23:28   film [TS]

00:23:28   it's okay that we don't know why he [TS]

00:23:30   wheezes I said we didn't know why Darth [TS]

00:23:31   Vader result breathing and as master new [TS]

00:23:33   hope we're behind with it is confusing [TS]

00:23:34   because it's like is he a droid or a [TS]

00:23:36   cyborg or a person because why would a [TS]

00:23:38   drawing why would a droid cop there's a [TS]

00:23:40   difference between breathing and [TS]

00:23:41   coughing and there's there is a bit [TS]

00:23:44   let's go to that the larger the larger [TS]

00:23:46   point is that like with Count Dooku we [TS]

00:23:50   are introduced to a major villain in the [TS]

00:23:52   movie with the kraal which is stupid and [TS]

00:23:56   that also we have the the inciting [TS]

00:23:59   action of the movie is the kidnapping of [TS]

00:24:02   the Chancellor which also of course [TS]

00:24:04   happens in text in the crawl rather than [TS]

00:24:07   seeing him so this kind of keys into the [TS]

00:24:10   word that comes to my mind most when [TS]

00:24:12   thinking about this movie and that is [TS]

00:24:13   unearned which is to say all these [TS]

00:24:16   things that happen are under and so for [TS]

00:24:17   example we get like the Jedi showing up [TS]

00:24:19   to rescue Palpatine and [TS]

00:24:21   services like general Kenobi we meet [TS]

00:24:22   again we're like we don't know anything [TS]

00:24:24   about like we have no context for that [TS]

00:24:25   whatsoever like that does not exist so [TS]

00:24:28   that they're trying to bring up the sort [TS]

00:24:29   of like Oh they've had this game of cat [TS]

00:24:32   and mouse and they're like these [TS]

00:24:33   antagonists and embassies and it's like [TS]

00:24:35   but that's honored because we don't know [TS]

00:24:36   anything about that were just told that [TS]

00:24:38   it exists and in some cases not even [TS]

00:24:40   told that exists left to infer it so [TS]

00:24:43   there's a lot of clumsiness because a [TS]

00:24:45   lot of stuff that you were sort of [TS]

00:24:46   assumed to have known things this this [TS]

00:24:49   movie has a problem with having a lot of [TS]

00:24:50   texts no subtext and then like all this [TS]

00:24:53   stuff it assumes you know which is not [TS]

00:24:55   subtext it's like getting back to my [TS]

00:24:57   opening statement where like if you if [TS]

00:24:59   you had two movies is the last movie [TS]

00:25:00   you've got to care about these [TS]

00:25:02   characters but you can't have an opening [TS]

00:25:03   a movie that opens with a set piece with [TS]

00:25:05   the battle unless it's involving hey [TS]

00:25:07   it's your old friends again like I mean [TS]

00:25:09   opening return the Jedi it's your old [TS]

00:25:10   friends in the trying to get hot why do [TS]

00:25:12   you care about hot because there was two [TS]

00:25:13   other movies why do you care what ppl [TS]

00:25:14   rescuing because there's two other [TS]

00:25:15   movies like as opposed to oh it's these [TS]

00:25:17   two fools right like it like that huh [TS]

00:25:20   you get any it's not such a bad idea to [TS]

00:25:23   have an opening set piece with a space [TS]

00:25:24   battle but if it opens and you're like [TS]

00:25:26   final care about any people in space but [TS]

00:25:27   I don't care about what they're doing i [TS]

00:25:29   don't care about what's at stake [TS]

00:25:30   I don't care about like it's just it's [TS]

00:25:33   so hard to make a good third movie when [TS]

00:25:35   the first two were so terrible [TS]

00:25:37   unless you're gonna somehow make me love [TS]

00:25:38   these characters like you have to start [TS]

00:25:40   your starting from zero which is [TS]

00:25:41   terrible how can you start the third [TS]

00:25:42   movie from zero yeah and so here not to [TS]

00:25:44   talk about the clone wars too much but i [TS]

00:25:46   but i am going to bring it up because I [TS]

00:25:48   feel like it's relevant to this movie I [TS]

00:25:50   do kind of feel that a lot of what was [TS]

00:25:52   done in the Clone Wars was Lucasfilm and [TS]

00:25:55   probably Lucas to a lesser extent [TS]

00:25:57   realizing hey we have the potential for [TS]

00:26:01   like interesting things to happen in [TS]

00:26:03   this movie but we don't have anything [TS]

00:26:04   set up but no one cares [TS]

00:26:06   there's no there's no conflict there's [TS]

00:26:08   no real resolution there's no excitement [TS]

00:26:10   so how about we fill in five seasons of [TS]

00:26:13   backstory to make people actually care [TS]

00:26:15   about those characters and like I really [TS]

00:26:17   do think there's a difference watching [TS]

00:26:19   the third film with knowledge of all of [TS]

00:26:22   the things that happen in the Clone Wars [TS]

00:26:24   and watching the film as most of us did [TS]

00:26:26   in the theater when the clone wars [TS]

00:26:28   didn't exist because i like I I feel [TS]

00:26:31   like a lot of things like oh shoot [TS]

00:26:34   ok let's say you want to make the order [TS]

00:26:36   66 that much bigger betrayal skipping [TS]

00:26:38   you know just minor spoilers here [TS]

00:26:40   hey how about we make it commander cody [TS]

00:26:42   that sets everything off just with [TS]

00:26:44   people when you're watching this the [TS]

00:26:46   first time you're like that that whose [TS]

00:26:48   to the commander cody i don't care i'm [TS]

00:26:50   sorry I'm swearing like left and right [TS]

00:26:52   here but I feel like it's important but [TS]

00:26:54   yeah like this will make a great special [TS]

00:26:56   edition later I was kind of okay with [TS]

00:26:59   some of these appearances of some of [TS]

00:27:01   these characters because you can get too [TS]

00:27:03   bogged down by saying well everything [TS]

00:27:05   has to have a four-page long backstory [TS]

00:27:07   to it the the with one of these darts [TS]

00:27:10   really all you need you just need dougie [TS]

00:27:12   mcbadbat guy he's the guy is gonna fight [TS]

00:27:14   these obi-wan making sure that he's got [TS]

00:27:16   something distracted so he can't be with [TS]

00:27:18   Anakin a time when he's going to be very [TS]

00:27:19   very vulnerable [TS]

00:27:20   I don't really I i think it was a clumsy [TS]

00:27:23   thing to have so we meet again for the [TS]

00:27:25   last time for the first time but it's [TS]

00:27:28   like really that characters all about [TS]

00:27:30   well what if we make one if we have like [TS]

00:27:32   of say mostly robotic sixth floor that's [TS]

00:27:35   got like eight arms and 41 attachments [TS]

00:27:38   for his lightsabers and they'll go all [TS]

00:27:40   spinny and stabby sold don't waste time [TS]

00:27:42   on total give me his bro I don't need to [TS]

00:27:45   know what school he went from just show [TS]

00:27:46   me the spin east and west of the biggest [TS]

00:27:48   problem for things that are left out is [TS]

00:27:51   the same one that was for episode 2 [TS]

00:27:53   which is that there's this supposed [TS]

00:27:55   report and this Brotherhood Brotherhood [TS]

00:27:57   between obi-wan and Anakin and they're [TS]

00:28:00   all these great adventures they've gone [TS]

00:28:01   on and and fixes that Anakin's got no be [TS]

00:28:04   one out of and we hear about him and [TS]

00:28:07   they sound really cool but we don't get [TS]

00:28:08   to see that we can see them talk about [TS]

00:28:10   it in like short little clips i sat on [TS]

00:28:13   couch is a lot we saw that there were [TS]

00:28:16   here on the couch together we weren't [TS]

00:28:17   around someone's talking but I remember [TS]

00:28:20   that was two movies are those were good [TS]

00:28:21   times [TS]

00:28:22   those are great tile that couch on 02 [TS]

00:28:24   reticular doesn't count that one that [TS]

00:28:27   was an ottoman [TS]

00:28:28   so basically this is about the the [TS]

00:28:30   corruption mannequin and occasional [TS]

00:28:32   seating [TS]

00:28:33   yeah well we go back to the what made [TS]

00:28:35   the original trilogy successful the [TS]

00:28:36   original trilogy had many of these same [TS]

00:28:38   problems where it's like we don't you [TS]

00:28:40   know we we are too assuming that these [TS]

00:28:42   people have these adventures and these [TS]

00:28:43   people are fighting you know the [TS]

00:28:45   rebellion in between movies and all this [TS]

00:28:46   crazy stuff has happened [TS]

00:28:48   but the report on screen is so good that [TS]

00:28:51   we believe it [TS]

00:28:52   the difference is that interesting [TS]

00:28:53   things happened in those movies to know [TS]

00:28:56   interesting things happen in these they [TS]

00:28:57   were not sitting on the couch [TS]

00:28:59   they did not get eaten or attacked by a [TS]

00:29:01   wampa all of the interesting things [TS]

00:29:03   happen when we left the theater and went [TS]

00:29:05   away for a year [TS]

00:29:06   yeah and when a movie is working you [TS]

00:29:09   don't notice these things it's really [TS]

00:29:10   between working and not working sir [TS]

00:29:12   although again with a third movie in a [TS]

00:29:14   in a in a series as John said you can [TS]

00:29:18   use the momentum that you've built up to [TS]

00:29:20   do shorthand to get PE audience invested [TS]

00:29:23   and you had a moment if Penn that's the [TS]

00:29:25   problem here is that we General Grievous [TS]

00:29:28   is a blank Count Dooku at least we [TS]

00:29:30   remember him from the last movie but [TS]

00:29:32   he's he's barely did anything in the [TS]

00:29:34   last minute he doesn't last long enough [TS]

00:29:36   and he doesn't last long in this movie [TS]

00:29:38   and there's this other coughing robot [TS]

00:29:40   that's happening with lots of collected [TS]

00:29:42   lightsabers [TS]

00:29:43   um and so and so we don't see ya we we [TS]

00:29:46   don't have any of that momentum to use [TS]

00:29:48   here which is which is part of the [TS]

00:29:50   problem plus plus we know they're going [TS]

00:29:52   to rescue the bad guy [TS]

00:29:54   which means we know that this is all [TS]

00:29:55   addition the others don't need that the [TS]

00:29:58   funding the root problem of George Lucas [TS]

00:30:00   decided this was entirely going to be a [TS]

00:30:02   story about how Palpatine conned [TS]

00:30:04   everybody from the first you know ten [TS]

00:30:07   minutes of the Phantom Menace referring [TS]

00:30:11   to Palpatine essentially setting this [TS]

00:30:13   thing up this is the problem is that [TS]

00:30:15   it's all a sham and so as if you are I'm [TS]

00:30:17   like what you have it going to go save [TS]

00:30:19   Palpatine but it's always set up so you [TS]

00:30:22   know I I don't even have a rooting [TS]

00:30:24   interest like I do it like yeah they're [TS]

00:30:26   gonna say hon that's good we like on [TS]

00:30:28   it's like oh they're gonna go say [TS]

00:30:29   Palpatine because its ground it's a [TS]

00:30:32   fundamentally the problem with this is [TS]

00:30:34   fundamentally lazy because it's relying [TS]

00:30:36   on the fact that we are you guys all of [TS]

00:30:38   the episodes 4 5 & 6 right we're gonna [TS]

00:30:39   tell you the untold stories of how all [TS]

00:30:41   that came around but it turns out that [TS]

00:30:43   we're just going to connect the dots in [TS]

00:30:45   the most linear on surprising way that [TS]

00:30:47   we can think of just to get word [TS]

00:30:48   literally here to get from point A [TS]

00:30:50   Anakin Skywalker's a little kid to point [TS]

00:30:53   B Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader there [TS]

00:30:55   are no surprises thrown him but and [TS]

00:30:57   there's no there's no sense of it like [TS]

00:30:58   everyone in it [TS]

00:30:59   this has to be a dunce like for it to [TS]

00:31:01   work is you just it doesn't make any [TS]

00:31:03   sense everyone has to look stupid [TS]

00:31:04   there's nothing clever going on and does [TS]

00:31:06   after the fact that you know during it [TS]

00:31:07   doesn't feel true after the fact if you [TS]

00:31:09   examine it doesn't make any sense like [TS]

00:31:11   it is the worst that's why you know [TS]

00:31:13   jason said that he has difficulty [TS]

00:31:14   connecting this Vader with the the video [TS]

00:31:16   from the original trilogy in some ways [TS]

00:31:17   that's a blessing that I these movies [TS]

00:31:19   don't connect for me in any way but it [TS]

00:31:20   just shows like you haven't actually [TS]

00:31:22   explained how we got there those movies [TS]

00:31:24   start [TS]

00:31:25   everything is in place in those movies [TS]

00:31:26   is not explained by these three movies [TS]

00:31:27   323 was ended by extrapolate far from [TS]

00:31:30   these movies it does not look like the [TS]

00:31:31   original trilogy like it just doesn't [TS]

00:31:34   look like that doesn't make any sense i [TS]

00:31:35   think these guys are all losers [TS]

00:31:36   everybody's stupid the Jedi are stupid [TS]

00:31:38   it Palpatine like well they're not [TS]

00:31:40   they're not necessarily stupid that the [TS]

00:31:42   weather one of the many failings of this [TS]

00:31:44   trilogy is that they never make you [TS]

00:31:47   think about how brilliant this plan to [TS]

00:31:50   basically get rid of the public and [TS]

00:31:52   established the Empire is my rear yeah [TS]

00:31:54   the idea the idea that i'm going to [TS]

00:31:56   slowly gained power i'm going to [TS]

00:31:58   basically create my own set of troops [TS]

00:32:00   are we are going to be like the heroes [TS]

00:32:02   to defend everybody people are going to [TS]

00:32:04   think that we've got these Jedi that are [TS]

00:32:06   actually commanding these troops were [TS]

00:32:07   actually we're just dispersing the Jedi [TS]

00:32:10   to make sure that they're gonna be [TS]

00:32:10   overwhelmed by 3230 clone troopers when [TS]

00:32:13   I need to get them all out of the way to [TS]

00:32:16   protect against this guy I admit this is [TS]

00:32:17   a case of your bored watching this [TS]

00:32:19   terrible movies you're writing a better [TS]

00:32:21   movie in its place but it was [TS]

00:32:22   potentially a really good plan [TS]

00:32:24   they just never because they were rather [TS]

00:32:27   much rather will have us and have us [TS]

00:32:28   believe that Anakin is this money I teen [TS]

00:32:31   tiger beat like chosen it's so tragic [TS]

00:32:33   and dusky that he's been tearing this [TS]

00:32:35   way to save the life of his love like no [TS]

00:32:38   that's I don't buy that either the [TS]

00:32:39   problem is that to Lucas in this [TS]

00:32:41   particular connect the dots game what's [TS]

00:32:43   important to him is the dots and not the [TS]

00:32:45   connections between them we have to have [TS]

00:32:47   the gym locker dot in this months ago to [TS]

00:32:48   show pakistan in the political science i [TS]

00:32:51   would say which you know like i said it [TS]

00:32:52   is one of the root problem here is that [TS]

00:32:54   is that it in fact as political science [TS]

00:32:57   it's bad political science because what [TS]

00:32:58   he's really doing is telling the rise of [TS]

00:33:00   Hitler allegory the idea with all of [TS]

00:33:02   these rises of dictators is everybody [TS]

00:33:04   goes along with it because it's a [TS]

00:33:06   gradual slide it is the parable of the [TS]

00:33:08   frog and the gradually boiling pot of [TS]

00:33:10   water you know the what ends up [TS]

00:33:13   opening is you turn around one day and [TS]

00:33:14   you realize oh my god we turned into an [TS]

00:33:16   empire but that's not what happens this [TS]

00:33:18   because that first that wouldn't be very [TS]

00:33:19   exciting series of science fiction [TS]

00:33:21   action movies I suppose it would be [TS]

00:33:23   boring political science but this is [TS]

00:33:24   already boring political science so what [TS]

00:33:27   we get is taxation again if you would [TS]

00:33:30   ask me at the beginning what's the [TS]

00:33:31   trilogy going to be about I'd be like [TS]

00:33:33   it's going to be about a kid who's [TS]

00:33:35   brilliant and he's gonna end and as the [TS]

00:33:38   lead the light of the Jedi is fading and [TS]

00:33:41   the light of the of the the Emperor he [TS]

00:33:44   is on the rise [TS]

00:33:45   he's torn between these two the fading [TS]

00:33:48   good guys and the rising bad guys and he [TS]

00:33:50   make some bad decisions that end him in [TS]

00:33:52   a really deep dark place because along [TS]

00:33:56   with the whole galaxy right [TS]

00:33:58   instead what we get as well it's really [TS]

00:34:00   a story about a dictator tricking [TS]

00:34:02   everybody so that he can rise to power [TS]

00:34:03   that is really what George Lucas thinks [TS]

00:34:05   these movies are about when I would our [TS]

00:34:07   take a step further and argue that that [TS]

00:34:09   you know even if that's what you thought [TS]

00:34:11   the movies were gonna be out about [TS]

00:34:12   Anakin's fall i would argue that they [TS]

00:34:15   shouldn't have been i think because it's [TS]

00:34:16   really well as we're going to see later [TS]

00:34:18   on in this movie it becomes really hard [TS]

00:34:20   especially in a Star Wars movie which [TS]

00:34:22   even if it gets dark is still supposed [TS]

00:34:23   to be sort of an adventure rights that's [TS]

00:34:25   really precise with a character who is [TS]

00:34:27   going to do terrible things really the [TS]

00:34:29   story in my mind and he's totally right [TS]

00:34:31   you're writing a better story to go [TS]

00:34:32   along should be about obi-wan breads [TS]

00:34:35   well it's kind it's the counter a [TS]

00:34:36   counterpoint of obi-wan and Anakin right [TS]

00:34:40   is ideally the story here is that one of [TS]

00:34:42   them is this person who is who has [TS]

00:34:44   always dreamed of being a Jedi but the [TS]

00:34:46   Jedi are fading out which is part of my [TS]

00:34:47   problem with this by the way is that in [TS]

00:34:49   the original trilogy you get the sense [TS]

00:34:50   that the Jedi have been fading away [TS]

00:34:52   where it's like well no it was more of a [TS]

00:34:54   lightsaber away in about 10 minutes [TS]

00:34:55   already more or less forgotten about the [TS]

00:34:58   Jedi by the time of episode 4 had ever [TS]

00:35:00   as we've covered this before that [TS]

00:35:01   everyone just forgot that i never seen [TS]

00:35:03   anyone has never seen what is this crazy [TS]

00:35:05   religion you're talking about the Jedi [TS]

00:35:06   are not allowed to be spoken of they [TS]

00:35:08   were and they were expunged in the [TS]

00:35:10   program's exactly and then a [TS]

00:35:12   counterpoint is obi-wan who's basically [TS]

00:35:14   soldiering one and and yard I suppose [TS]

00:35:17   soldiering on everything's falling apart [TS]

00:35:20   what is the last thing we have in the [TS]

00:35:22   last thing we have is to get us set up [TS]

00:35:24   for these kids [TS]

00:35:26   and that and sort of like I have to [TS]

00:35:28   retreat everything is sad but I'm going [TS]

00:35:30   to find a way through so that there's a [TS]

00:35:32   glimmer of hope for the future a new [TS]

00:35:33   hope in the future right and that's not [TS]

00:35:36   what we get but the problem is that [TS]

00:35:37   fundamentally what happens is that every [TS]

00:35:39   single important thing that goes on [TS]

00:35:41   every single piece of important [TS]

00:35:43   character development happens to Steve's [TS]

00:35:45   point about not connecting the dots [TS]

00:35:46   the problem is that the rationale for [TS]

00:35:48   every single thing from Anakin's fall to [TS]

00:35:50   the fall of the republic is it happened [TS]

00:35:52   because the script said so well right [TS]

00:35:54   there's no there is no connection there [TS]

00:35:56   is nothing there and it is to a [TS]

00:35:58   tangential point about the people forget [TS]

00:35:59   about Jedi was he usually used to watch [TS]

00:36:02   a recent episode of Star Wars rebels [TS]

00:36:03   which is quite entertaining and people [TS]

00:36:05   are talking about Jedi like ah yeah [TS]

00:36:07   those guys are fairy tales I'm like it's [TS]

00:36:09   been 15 years just misses like if you [TS]

00:36:11   forgot about like oh yeah [TS]

00:36:12   SEAL Team six right those guys are just [TS]

00:36:15   a myth that happened ten years ago where [TS]

00:36:17   the Jedi secret to agents [TS]

00:36:19   well if you weren't involved in a border [TS]

00:36:21   dispute I could see how you would not [TS]

00:36:22   have run out of the bed there enough [TS]

00:36:24   well I mean if you think about it if [TS]

00:36:26   you're talking about outer rim planets [TS]

00:36:27   right you've probably never seen a Jedi [TS]

00:36:29   again unless there's apparently they [TS]

00:36:30   need the internet there could be no [TS]

00:36:32   they're considered the mythical the [TS]

00:36:33   mythical saviors of the galaxy right and [TS]

00:36:35   then if you also put the Jedi in the [TS]

00:36:37   Jews situation for making a world war [TS]

00:36:40   two allegory do it like no I'm serious [TS]

00:36:42   like you put them you put them into the [TS]

00:36:44   slot into the the Jedi do slot and you [TS]

00:36:46   think about it haha yes you should stop [TS]

00:36:50   that presentation please the terms jus [TS]

00:36:53   days haha [TS]

00:36:55   boo alright alright you take that [TS]

00:36:58   hypothesis the Empire is probably like [TS]

00:37:01   we don't want to hear about Jedi's we [TS]

00:37:03   don't want Jedi's mentioned we don't so [TS]

00:37:05   if you grew up in that area you're not [TS]

00:37:07   going to talk about Jedi's you're not [TS]

00:37:08   going to hear about Jedi's because it's [TS]

00:37:09   basically a taboo topic the topic what [TS]

00:37:11   you get arrested are but even taboo [TS]

00:37:13   topics people know about them they know [TS]

00:37:15   they don't they know right engineers is [TS]

00:37:17   not long enough [TS]

00:37:18   they're not legends at that point right [TS]

00:37:20   there there there there memory that that [TS]

00:37:23   people talk about and it's but it's not [TS]

00:37:25   like faded they eventually would fade [TS]

00:37:26   into a legend but again that would be [TS]

00:37:28   after 50 years or fifteen hundred years [TS]

00:37:30   later that's one thing 15 years later [TS]

00:37:32   like I'm pretty sure people even on the [TS]

00:37:33   farm that the Galaxy would still believe [TS]

00:37:35   that those are actual things that [TS]

00:37:36   existed somewhere and John you mentioned [TS]

00:37:38   on the talk show [TS]

00:37:40   star wars episode about this at this [TS]

00:37:41   point that when Han Solo is talking to [TS]

00:37:44   obi-wan and Luke he's like talking about [TS]

00:37:47   the Jedi like they're just a rumor of a [TS]

00:37:50   crazy thing that happened a hundred [TS]

00:37:52   years ago he's been all over the galaxy [TS]

00:37:54   seen a lot of strange things he's never [TS]

00:37:56   seen anything that convince them to jedi [TS]

00:37:58   the force even exist as a thing like I [TS]

00:38:00   mean he was alive when the Jedi were [TS]

00:38:01   around here you know they had a whole [TS]

00:38:03   big temple on the the the main planet of [TS]

00:38:06   the Empire right big building has never [TS]

00:38:08   seen anything you donate conference room [TS]

00:38:11   he said he said I deniers a force desire [TS]

00:38:13   huh is a really effective disinformation [TS]

00:38:18   campaign [TS]

00:38:18   oh and we don't want to start with me we [TS]

00:38:21   can't root for the guy we feel you know [TS]

00:38:23   what he's gonna do terrible things I [TS]

00:38:25   think you can you just have to [TS]

00:38:26   understand why he's doing the terrible [TS]

00:38:28   things like that whole thing it's if [TS]

00:38:29   your main character is going to do [TS]

00:38:31   terrible things is going to end up [TS]

00:38:32   becoming evil you want to feel like boy [TS]

00:38:35   that's terrible but I kind of see wire [TS]

00:38:36   where he was coming from my name is [TS]

00:38:38   bringing up the Godfather me that's all [TS]

00:38:40   sorts of horrible things like that of [TS]

00:38:41   this is the dumbest person in the [TS]

00:38:43   universe right because you have to be [TS]

00:38:44   like you he makes bad choices but you [TS]

00:38:46   could totally understand where he's at [TS]

00:38:48   emotionally and why what it like it's a [TS]

00:38:50   difficult choice like it and then in [TS]

00:38:52   this movie you watchin is like no sane [TS]

00:38:54   person would make that choice and so you [TS]

00:38:56   can't empathize with them at all and so [TS]

00:38:57   now it's not that you're singing do bad [TS]

00:38:59   things you've seen him do bad things [TS]

00:39:00   inexplicably you're like lizards just [TS]

00:39:02   nuts [TS]

00:39:03   the shortcut it to write because the [TS]

00:39:04   murder of small children is like I was [TS]

00:39:06   nothing more evil in the murder of small [TS]

00:39:07   children that will convert everybody's [TS]

00:39:09   evil there's no real reason to do that [TS]

00:39:11   they couldn't kick puppies i kept copies [TS]

00:39:13   and kids would come on the screen here [TS]

00:39:15   to stop them but this puts a hybrid evil [TS]

00:39:17   now i'm turning Darth Vader for some [TS]

00:39:18   reason yeah let me let me kill some kids [TS]

00:39:20   that makes sense [TS]

00:39:22   Young's or worse of all of all the [TS]

00:39:23   people in that temple you want to go [TS]

00:39:25   against people who are your age where [TS]

00:39:27   justice skilled and trained if there's [TS]

00:39:28   some sort of apprentice Jedi's for about [TS]

00:39:31   half your height one-third your weight [TS]

00:39:32   and barely are trusted with a sword [TS]

00:39:33   that's if I gotta kill Jedi's that's [TS]

00:39:36   what I'm going first [TS]

00:39:37   ok Europe understand Jedi so those [TS]

00:39:40   babies are traders that traders the [TS]

00:39:42   Republic Andy yeah those kids know about [TS]

00:39:44   politics we you know what the little [TS]

00:39:46   dudes running around chopping at your [TS]

00:39:47   knees while you're fighting the [TS]

00:39:49   pls those kids were definitely old [TS]

00:39:51   enough to vote by the way less they put [TS]

00:39:52   the park they park their bikes in your [TS]

00:39:54   parking spot no matter how many times [TS]

00:39:56   you tell them not to [TS]

00:39:57   did you see that teenage Jedi fighting [TS]

00:39:59   off all those clone troopers it needed [TS]

00:40:01   to die he gave me lip to add a real [TS]

00:40:03   attitude i believe that was George [TS]

00:40:05   Lucas's son actually let me take a break [TS]

00:40:08   to tell you about mail route imagine a [TS]

00:40:11   world without spam viruses are bounced [TS]

00:40:13   email imagine opening your email and [TS]

00:40:15   seeing only the legitimate email you [TS]

00:40:17   want and need to receive mail route can [TS]

00:40:19   make that a daily reality they have for [TS]

00:40:21   me [TS]

00:40:22   you don't have to install any hardware [TS]

00:40:23   software you don't have to maintain [TS]

00:40:24   hardware/software all happens in the [TS]

00:40:26   cloud mail received your mail sorts it [TS]

00:40:29   and delivers only clean email to your [TS]

00:40:32   email server and mailbox [TS]

00:40:34   it's easy to setup reliable trusted by [TS]

00:40:36   the largest universities and [TS]

00:40:37   corporations as a desktop user like me [TS]

00:40:39   you'll find mail routes user interface [TS]

00:40:41   super simple and effective if you're an [TS]

00:40:43   email administrator or an IT [TS]

00:40:44   professional they built all of their [TS]

00:40:46   tools with you in mind there's even an [TS]

00:40:48   API for easy account management their [TS]

00:40:50   support for ldap an active directory TLS [TS]

00:40:52   male bagging outbound relay everything [TS]

00:40:55   you'd want from the people who are [TS]

00:40:56   handling your email you can start a [TS]

00:40:58   risk-free trial with no credit card [TS]

00:41:00   required you sign up you change your MX [TS]

00:41:02   records and you do need to know what [TS]

00:41:04   that is that means that they're going to [TS]

00:41:06   point the male to male route surface [TS]

00:41:08   first and then it passes on to you you [TS]

00:41:10   do that your mailbox and hardware are [TS]

00:41:13   completely protected it is simple and [TS]

00:41:14   effective there's no good reason not to [TS]

00:41:16   give it a try [TS]

00:41:17   everybody who listens to the [TS]

00:41:18   incomparable receives ten percent off [TS]

00:41:20   the lifetime of your account go to mail [TS]

00:41:22   route dot net / smell right now and you [TS]

00:41:26   can get ten percent off for the lifetime [TS]

00:41:28   of your mail route account now route [TS]

00:41:30   dotnet / smell [TS]

00:41:32   thank you so much to me around for [TS]

00:41:33   sponsoring being comfortable so the [TS]

00:41:36   crawl all over an hour and we've got [TS]

00:41:41   into the crawl ok we could cover we've [TS]

00:41:43   got covered a lot here i just i'm gonna [TS]

00:41:45   i'm gonna mention some things that [TS]

00:41:47   happened and then we can go from there [TS]

00:41:49   the again Palpatine's kidnapped [TS]

00:41:50   off-screen we do see early x-wings & Tie [TS]

00:41:53   Fighters and I wanted to use that as a [TS]

00:41:55   jumping off point to briefly discuss the [TS]

00:41:56   fact that there is an attempt made by [TS]

00:41:58   somebody in the art department [TS]

00:42:00   to tie this movie in yeah with a new [TS]

00:42:04   hope this this is very clear that they [TS]

00:42:06   are trying very hard so we get early [TS]

00:42:09   ships that look very much like x-wing [TS]

00:42:12   shifts that look like Thai fighters but [TS]

00:42:13   aren't quite there yet we see there are [TS]

00:42:16   cinnamon rolls on the side of padma his [TS]

00:42:18   head that are very ladylike and then [TS]

00:42:20   later in the movie we see Jimmy Smith's [TS]

00:42:22   traveling on a ship with white interior [TS]

00:42:25   that looks very much like the ship at [TS]

00:42:26   the beginning of a new hope so [TS]

00:42:28   there are instead i think it is is it [TS]

00:42:30   officially the same ship had to be [TS]

00:42:32   formulated yeah because it's captain [TS]

00:42:34   Antilles alright because they give the [TS]

00:42:35   gifts c-3po to him and have him have [TS]

00:42:37   have my just remember that there's a [TS]

00:42:39   bunch of those things i noticed subtler [TS]

00:42:41   indeed the displays in the jedis [TS]

00:42:44   fighters look exactly like the display [TS]

00:42:46   in Darth Vader's TIE fighter in episode [TS]

00:42:48   4 the little circular like targeting [TS]

00:42:50   thing is not yeah same display as well [TS]

00:42:52   so they tried but it's kinda ham-fisted [TS]

00:42:54   in some places [TS]

00:42:56   well i don't know i like it in the same [TS]

00:42:57   way that i really like the music in [TS]

00:42:59   these movies i think the the designs for [TS]

00:43:01   the things are actually really good i [TS]

00:43:03   like the designs of the protostar [TS]

00:43:04   stories like the pro-x wings that the [TS]

00:43:06   Jedi fighters are little bit dorky it [TS]

00:43:08   kind of see what there is but like at I [TS]

00:43:10   think the sort of Mecca designs to use [TS]

00:43:12   the animator man in the entire prequels [TS]

00:43:15   for the most part are pretty good i mean [TS]

00:43:16   i don't really like the droids from the [TS]

00:43:17   prequels I don't really like most of the [TS]

00:43:19   robots but the ships are all pretty good [TS]

00:43:20   ships are pretty good work to make an [TS]

00:43:23   uncool starship it was really [TS]

00:43:24   interesting to see how they will do what [TS]

00:43:26   computer displays knowing that they have [TS]

00:43:29   to make it look that that like this was [TS]

00:43:31   20 years before the technology that we [TS]

00:43:33   saw 1977 if i was able to exactly like [TS]

00:43:36   we have we have to do captain we have to [TS]

00:43:38   do Nixie tubes somehow in here and make [TS]

00:43:40   it look like it's a real thing i love [TS]

00:43:42   the evolution somewhere out there is [TS]

00:43:43   like no no these these multi-purpose LCD [TS]

00:43:46   displays these are the most useful way [TS]

00:43:48   display information Lincoln lights [TS]

00:43:50   arranged in a console CRT's should [TS]

00:43:52   really evolved from LCD that much harder [TS]

00:43:54   when you think about my drift there's a [TS]

00:43:56   terrible war i'm sure LCD panels are in [TS]

00:43:59   short supply [TS]

00:44:01   they just have to use old technology [TS]

00:44:02   maybe later fruit stuff for you you just [TS]

00:44:04   buy one of these old panels hooked up to [TS]

00:44:06   two Raspberry Pi the first time through [TS]

00:44:10   and maybe the second movie too [TS]

00:44:12   it was all about look what we can do [TS]

00:44:13   state-of-the-art [TS]

00:44:14   this movie it definitely feels like the [TS]

00:44:16   in the art direction like John said in [TS]

00:44:18   the art direction this movie is about [TS]

00:44:21   hinting at the original trilogy and [TS]

00:44:24   hinting especially episode for that day [TS]

00:44:26   there is an effort made by yeah i think [TS]

00:44:28   it's cool i think it's cool that [TS]

00:44:29   suddenly you're like hey wait a second [TS]

00:44:30   he's flying a ship that looks kind of [TS]

00:44:32   like Darth Vader's TIE fighter and those [TS]

00:44:34   look like x-wings and-and-and there [TS]

00:44:36   there's the superstructure of the death [TS]

00:44:37   star but I actually really liked the the [TS]

00:44:40   the freighter which is which I guess you [TS]

00:44:42   are the the the the ship that antilles [TS]

00:44:45   is on and and yeah Jimmy spits is on and [TS]

00:44:49   i like that because it's like hey we're [TS]

00:44:50   back where we started right I i like [TS]

00:44:52   seeing that it's the same problem as [TS]

00:44:54   Darth Vader where it's all shoved into [TS]

00:44:55   the last movie though like we didn't [TS]

00:44:57   build towards their like we got there [TS]

00:44:59   are moving more like oh crap well forgot [TS]

00:45:01   to mention these connect that's the [TS]

00:45:03   that's the whole movie is this which is [TS]

00:45:05   like oh jeez we squandered 10 movies and [TS]

00:45:07   now we gotta put it all in here all [TS]

00:45:08   right this is the last season of lost [TS]

00:45:10   squished into 12 an hour and 20 minutes [TS]

00:45:12   i thought i was going to say like just [TS]

00:45:14   gonna say was like George George Lucas's [TS]

00:45:16   term paper is due the next games play [TS]

00:45:18   crap I gotta finish this all three hours [TS]

00:45:21   he didn't say craft and he said no [TS]

00:45:23   jugular was that you will see the do we [TS]

00:45:29   see the proto Empire Imperial uniforms [TS]

00:45:33   anywhere else but the last scene because [TS]

00:45:35   that definitely fill out of nowhere and [TS]

00:45:38   almost on the Taylor said quick because [TS]

00:45:40   it becomes outfits whipped up we need [TS]

00:45:41   them for the final scene i know i'm like [TS]

00:45:43   you guys have epaulets and everything [TS]

00:45:44   else I'm like that whole planet of the [TS]

00:45:47   healers putting together outfits through [TS]

00:45:49   the time he does cuz Palpatine has the [TS]

00:45:52   Imperial Guards the red guys are like [TS]

00:45:54   ready to go you know if we wanted to ask [TS]

00:45:56   Dexter jettster about a planet full of [TS]

00:45:58   taylor's new learners they probably [TS]

00:46:00   wouldn't that's right as anyone I think [TS]

00:46:03   I can you don't admire Palpatine's [TS]

00:46:05   plotting not only does he raise that [TS]

00:46:06   clone army but he does have new uniforms [TS]

00:46:09   ready to go so small himself that man is [TS]

00:46:11   what is it is like opening a restaurant [TS]

00:46:13   you do a soft launch just to get the [TS]

00:46:15   bugs out and then you open the doors for [TS]

00:46:17   these for the reefer the galaxy alright [TS]

00:46:20   we're wearing these great things now yes [TS]

00:46:21   yes all right he's got the appetizers [TS]

00:46:24   got the people to where the boss [TS]

00:46:26   Marnie alright you gonna tell us what [TS]

00:46:28   these Chiclets on our chests actually [TS]

00:46:29   mean or no it's it's tough here that's [TS]

00:46:32   all uniforms [TS]

00:46:33   it's a style thing that that was I i [TS]

00:46:37   remember i distinctly remember in the [TS]

00:46:38   theater watching episode 3 and let the [TS]

00:46:41   point where I kind of gave up on the [TS]

00:46:43   movie was oh so not only are we seeing [TS]

00:46:46   wookies we are absolutely seeing [TS]

00:46:48   Chewbacca is just and it's not like this [TS]

00:46:51   not as though that he just like [TS]

00:46:52   accidentally showed up in episode 4 with [TS]

00:46:55   no connection at the ok that is I don't [TS]

00:46:58   think to the audience [TS]

00:46:59   I have a note to that and the effect it [TS]

00:47:01   to that effect which reads Chewbacca [TS]

00:47:02   medio de this sounds like somebody's [TS]

00:47:04   fanfiction yeah did you did you know [TS]

00:47:07   that apparently in an earlier draft of [TS]

00:47:08   the movie they were supposed to be a [TS]

00:47:09   ten-year-old Han Solo as well on issues [TS]

00:47:12   on consumers sorry cousin because you [TS]

00:47:15   have a lot of sense it's it's like it's [TS]

00:47:17   really so at some point like they wanted [TS]

00:47:20   to come up with a master list of [TS]

00:47:21   everything we liked about the Holy [TS]

00:47:23   trilogy and decided to throw sand on [TS]

00:47:25   every gear in those mechanisms it's [TS]

00:47:28   important [TS]

00:47:29   well into the wookies they avoided [TS]

00:47:30   ruining the wookies until this film and [TS]

00:47:32   management's thanks guys [TS]

00:47:34   the Braves a brave warrior race there [TS]

00:47:36   was another among the last fall away i [TS]

00:47:38   agree that i like the ship design in [TS]

00:47:41   this movie [TS]

00:47:41   what I dislike is the way that we are [TS]

00:47:43   introduced to the ship designs which is [TS]

00:47:45   that at the beginning of every single [TS]

00:47:47   scene there's a cgi establishing shot of [TS]

00:47:49   some sort of landscape and we get to see [TS]

00:47:51   this ship swoop in from the side and we [TS]

00:47:54   have a close-up at 44 sometimes as much [TS]

00:47:56   as 35 minutes i actually I'm not 35 35 [TS]

00:48:00   seconds [TS]

00:48:01   don't you got like that like 35 minutes [TS]

00:48:03   that I actually went through all the 50 [TS]

00:48:06   chapter stops on my DVD and of those [TS]

00:48:08   5022 of them start off with one of these [TS]

00:48:10   sweeping cgi shots [TS]

00:48:12   well it just goes to the same point [TS]

00:48:13   about laziness this entire movie is lazy [TS]

00:48:16   from step one the shots are very static [TS]

00:48:18   they're the same all the dialogue is [TS]

00:48:20   very much the same like it's just they [TS]

00:48:22   just they just kind of pounded it out [TS]

00:48:24   Michael weekend but the shots they do [TS]

00:48:25   nothing but show off the visual effects [TS]

00:48:27   and get me started about the fight [TS]

00:48:29   choreography fight choreography is [TS]

00:48:31   terrible yet to your point about visual [TS]

00:48:33   effects and is that watching i watch [TS]

00:48:35   this movie to X and O man when you watch [TS]

00:48:38   something into x2 [TS]

00:48:39   see frames-per-second you know what else [TS]

00:48:40   is 60 frames per second video cutscenes [TS]

00:48:43   specifically in video anything in this [TS]

00:48:45   office so the vast majority of this [TS]

00:48:47   movie already you know that the cjis is [TS]

00:48:50   if he will you play it back at 60 frames [TS]

00:48:52   per second you can really tell what's [TS]

00:48:55   what's terrible cgi and what little bits [TS]

00:48:58   are real people and that kind of blends [TS]

00:49:00   together is the worst part of that is [TS]

00:49:02   the the clone troopers like there's no [TS]

00:49:05   reason yeah for all those clone troopers [TS]

00:49:07   to BCG you can put a guy in a plastic [TS]

00:49:08   suit we have met technology actually [TS]

00:49:11   looks pretty darn good especially when [TS]

00:49:12   like you don't even see that it's just a [TS]

00:49:14   torso in the background and it's the [TS]

00:49:16   Lucas digital you know a sort of [TS]

00:49:18   changing history after the fact diseases [TS]

00:49:20   like I like to see him but it'd be [TS]

00:49:21   better if we had a clone trooper in the [TS]

00:49:23   background sure we could just put a male [TS]

00:49:25   he could have had a guy standing over [TS]

00:49:26   the sink now what well Adam and post [TS]

00:49:28   with the end like it is just it they [TS]

00:49:29   look so bad what's damning John is that [TS]

00:49:32   even worse you can go back to the real [TS]

00:49:34   original trilogy and find places where [TS]

00:49:35   all those stormtroopers exist in matte [TS]

00:49:37   paintings and they still look better [TS]

00:49:39   management because they're just too darn [TS]

00:49:41   close like there-there close-up [TS]

00:49:42   background filler but your eye is drawn [TS]

00:49:44   to them because you you get shiny not [TS]

00:49:46   right and it's like it's just it's not a [TS]

00:49:48   giant ship it's not a huge fist of a [TS]

00:49:49   city you can't build it's a guy wearing [TS]

00:49:51   plastic just go to a con and pull out [TS]

00:49:53   one of the cosplayers are bare [TS]

00:49:55   ya know they're all so yeah so the early [TS]

00:49:58   x-wings are there that the piloted by [TS]

00:50:00   clone clone troopers so we get our Lara [TS]

00:50:04   are Jango Fett actor gets to continue or [TS]

00:50:08   his face digital compositing only [TS]

00:50:10   african place in this movie yet police [TS]

00:50:11   screens within green screens Anakin and [TS]

00:50:13   obi-wan scrape off some droid bugs I [TS]

00:50:16   thought that was a interesting i've seen [TS]

00:50:18   right there's a scene where three of [TS]

00:50:20   them are worrying about how to get the [TS]

00:50:21   things off like our to both of them are [TS]

00:50:23   like looking over at ob one ship and I'm [TS]

00:50:25   like well why are they not watching [TS]

00:50:27   where they're going there in the middle [TS]

00:50:28   of a dogfight there in this big battle [TS]

00:50:31   but apparently there's no danger don't [TS]

00:50:33   you know flying is for droids flying is [TS]

00:50:35   for droids they don't need to actually [TS]

00:50:37   pay attention to where they're going no [TS]

00:50:39   they're too busy scripting off the bugs [TS]

00:50:40   you want to talk about as tragedy are [TS]

00:50:44   you know the one reason why we really [TS]

00:50:46   don't care about these these characters [TS]

00:50:47   at all is our five who is you know [TS]

00:50:49   supposedly OB ones closest [TS]

00:50:52   right companion we've seen him with our [TS]

00:50:54   54 most movies are five gets killed the [TS]

00:50:57   first meets a tragic [TS]

00:50:58   yeah his trash can come and even won't [TS]

00:51:01   be one just says oh well I hope he has a [TS]

00:51:04   mac know what care for you if you love [TS]

00:51:05   your astromech droid back him up daily [TS]

00:51:08   yeah he hates that robot let's just be [TS]

00:51:10   honest here I hope you have a backup [TS]

00:51:12   want to talk to him for all of episode 2 [TS]

00:51:14   he has now is no dispute exposition to [TS]

00:51:16   which just means he'll have to talk less [TS]

00:51:18   so you so like there's a point at which [TS]

00:51:19   you just intentionally drop your iphone [TS]

00:51:21   4s in the toilet because you really want [TS]

00:51:23   the iphone 6 so the other thing I kind [TS]

00:51:26   of informatics seen that again is [TS]

00:51:28   totally inferred and not spelled out is [TS]

00:51:29   are we supposed to get the idea that [TS]

00:51:31   Anakin has basically been promoted to [TS]

00:51:33   early because the Jedi are being pressed [TS]

00:51:35   into service and he's like you know we [TS]

00:51:37   sort of later on with his whole argument [TS]

00:51:39   about not becoming a master get this [TS]

00:51:41   idea that like yeah he's really good and [TS]

00:51:43   everything but it also is it supposed to [TS]

00:51:45   feel like oh man they promoted him too [TS]

00:51:47   fast because he we really need more Jedi [TS]

00:51:49   because we're fighting this big war was [TS]

00:51:51   not chosen one thing like he's supposed [TS]

00:51:53   to this first movie had some BS about [TS]

00:51:55   chosen on you i guess we have to like [TS]

00:51:57   promote a minor is the main character we [TS]

00:51:59   have to promote him know it's the [TS]

00:52:00   Chancellor the Chancellor is somehow [TS]

00:52:02   screwing with our minds and forcing us [TS]

00:52:04   to do this and we feel kind of kind of [TS]

00:52:08   bad i guess i guess we have to do this [TS]

00:52:09   so they landed me in the little landing [TS]

00:52:12   Bay thing which has got the magnetic [TS]

00:52:13   shields on my way gonna start going out [TS]

00:52:15   yeah I'm saying about the space battle [TS]

00:52:17   we have that in the interest of [TS]

00:52:18   continuity we do have a scene where [TS]

00:52:21   Anakin avoid some missiles by spinning [TS]

00:52:23   it turns out that actually was a good [TS]

00:52:26   track payoff a payoff and and is somehow [TS]

00:52:32   the Trade Federation hasn't really [TS]

00:52:33   upgraded its droids in all the years [TS]

00:52:35   that it's been doing stuff either didn't [TS]

00:52:37   really learn from its yeah but that's [TS]

00:52:39   not the problem with this [TS]

00:52:40   they're still dominant after they land [TS]

00:52:42   and horses the the lesson we should have [TS]

00:52:44   learned from especially episode 1 is it [TS]

00:52:46   a week enemies are boring it's a replay [TS]

00:52:48   of episode guide say they go in there [TS]

00:52:50   and start slicing and dicing those [TS]

00:52:51   droids like okay yeah we get it there [TS]

00:52:53   weekend amis they're not a threat to you [TS]

00:52:55   my notes just same more droid saber [TS]

00:52:58   father that's it's just like oh these [TS]

00:53:00   guys they're stupid and a waste of [TS]

00:53:02   everyone's time [TS]

00:53:03   that's the latest reason I the same [TS]

00:53:04   thing battle droids are still use [TS]

00:53:06   listen includes our Father like it's the [TS]

00:53:07   same it's just let's put these two giant [TS]

00:53:09   armies here with no steaks because out [TS]

00:53:12   those guys are robots and those guys are [TS]

00:53:13   clones who really cares about anything [TS]

00:53:14   that you would even think their arms [TS]

00:53:16   would be getting tired of it by this [TS]

00:53:17   point that hire help to go could you [TS]

00:53:19   just mow down these droids because like [TS]

00:53:21   really they're not a threat but it's [TS]

00:53:22   just my arm is getting so tired from [TS]

00:53:23   these drugs and have just really a lot [TS]

00:53:25   of work i love that line from obi-wan [TS]

00:53:27   about the clones they're doing their job [TS]

00:53:29   so we can do ours and their job is to [TS]

00:53:31   explode basic job is to die without [TS]

00:53:34   honor we see them a Klingon voice it [TS]

00:53:37   sounds like you need to say that the [TS]

00:53:38   Klingon voice there is no honor and [TS]

00:53:39   dying is a close they are going to die [TS]

00:53:42   with no honor the owners they're cloners [TS]

00:53:45   all these cloners we gotta put another [TS]

00:53:47   order in for more korean food loners [TS]

00:53:50   best corners and so we got some elevator [TS]

00:53:52   shenanigans there's lots of really [TS]

00:53:54   exciting stuff involving elevators and [TS]

00:53:56   that's what I look for in a Star Wars [TS]

00:53:57   movie is some elevator and many [TS]

00:53:59   elevators they blow the top off it goes [TS]

00:54:01   down it comes back up i find it [TS]

00:54:03   interesting that the one new trade [TS]

00:54:05   federation do they introduced is no [TS]

00:54:07   longer in Asian stereotype but a surfer [TS]

00:54:10   dude I guess there's nothing they can do [TS]

00:54:12   about nute Gunray at this moment they [TS]

00:54:14   sure i'm gonna throw any more new [TS]

00:54:15   insulting Asian characters into no I [TS]

00:54:18   library i wrote down how come r2 d2 [TS]

00:54:21   needs a comlink he's a joy i wrote that [TS]

00:54:24   to why does are you having my radio in [TS]

00:54:26   parentheses for stupid comedy moments [TS]

00:54:28   later [TS]

00:54:29   yeah all those rockets and oil injectors [TS]

00:54:32   that he uses but why why he's a robot [TS]

00:54:34   why does he have a human walkie-talkie [TS]

00:54:36   we didn't complain about this in episode [TS]

00:54:39   4 really need to close down the garbage [TS]

00:54:41   mashers yes because they give him [TS]

00:54:42   see-three-pee-oh as a hand 3pl Threepio [TS]

00:54:44   doesn't have a comlink although he [TS]

00:54:46   really should be showed against Michelle [TS]

00:54:48   because of organs he doesn't because [TS]

00:54:49   need very little difference is they're [TS]

00:54:51   using the Death Star's communication [TS]

00:54:53   system so that they might not be wired [TS]

00:54:55   up to that this is like they're trying [TS]

00:54:56   to be in touch with each other and they [TS]

00:54:58   give our two of walkie-talkie it just [TS]

00:55:00   seems weird to me no cellphones a long [TS]

00:55:02   time ago in a galaxy far far [TS]

00:55:03   ok it's pretty cool at all of those [TS]

00:55:05   decks of heavy metal don't actually [TS]

00:55:07   interrupt the signal of the walking out [TS]

00:55:09   dessert initially wanted Jackie spaces [TS]

00:55:11   your phone too because like part of the [TS]

00:55:12   joke is like he's supposed to be holding [TS]

00:55:14   the thing and he's got it on speaker or [TS]

00:55:16   something [TS]

00:55:17   then the voice comes in other choices [TS]

00:55:18   here him right just real offense to in [TS]

00:55:21   this film is they make are too and they [TS]

00:55:22   make our to the joke like what exactly [TS]

00:55:25   yes I know although i will say the scene [TS]

00:55:27   where he does the guys in oil and then [TS]

00:55:28   set them on fire was actually kind of [TS]

00:55:30   bomb [TS]

00:55:31   I oh yeah i agree although the slap [TS]

00:55:33   stickiness of it did not need to be [TS]

00:55:34   there no but I felt like God you setting [TS]

00:55:37   guys on fire [TS]

00:55:37   that's amazing magic happen all the time [TS]

00:55:40   flexible metals and but yeah you know [TS]

00:55:42   everybody figured okay we've established [TS]

00:55:44   that he can reject liquids and he has a [TS]

00:55:46   rocket [TS]

00:55:47   so let's do this it's clever its clever [TS]

00:55:50   but he had to jason's point this entire [TS]

00:55:52   sequence does feel like a replay of the [TS]

00:55:54   episode 1 bit down to the look battle [TS]

00:55:56   droids oh look destroyers look we're [TS]

00:55:58   running around at SuperSpeed like you [TS]

00:55:59   know basically or many times from c-3po [TS]

00:56:02   but now I just a different Jedi and [TS]

00:56:05   we're still sort of negotiators I i [TS]

00:56:07   think they mean this to be like hey [TS]

00:56:10   aren't you getting that episode 1 [TS]

00:56:12   feeling it's like we've come all the way [TS]

00:56:13   back around and so don't wanna get it [TS]

00:56:15   could well I going now known as it won [TS]

00:56:18   again we get to see mr. mr. Dooku again [TS]

00:56:22   briefly before he's beheaded i want to [TS]

00:56:25   point out that in the background this is [TS]

00:56:26   one of those like we we have so much [TS]

00:56:30   power on our computing platforms now [TS]

00:56:33   that we can do anything they literally [TS]

00:56:35   while the entire showdown is happening [TS]

00:56:37   with with Dooku and General Grievous and [TS]

00:56:41   the Jedi there is the most insane space [TS]

00:56:44   battle happening behind them that we [TS]

00:56:46   don't care about but it's really [TS]

00:56:47   literally like hey guys what if we took [TS]

00:56:49   the insane space battle from Return of [TS]

00:56:50   the Jedi and just have the background [TS]

00:56:52   where nobody cared about [TS]

00:56:53   can I can I file something under plot [TS]

00:56:56   points that make absolutely no sense and [TS]

00:56:58   therefore no reason files getting [TS]

00:56:59   awfully full it's a big it's a big way [TS]

00:57:02   to find the scene it does not exist for [TS]

00:57:03   any reason tel L Anakin's jumped outside [TS]

00:57:05   the elevator right and he jumps back [TS]

00:57:07   down and you know everyone goes to hit [TS]

00:57:09   him with the lightsaber and that goes oh [TS]

00:57:11   it's you [TS]

00:57:12   yeah and it's like a who else is gonna [TS]

00:57:14   be your freaking Jedi you should know [TS]

00:57:17   when your pal shows up on your power is [TS]

00:57:19   totally useless and there's no reason [TS]

00:57:22   for to be there there's it serves 0 [TS]

00:57:24   purpose it's not be like it's sort of [TS]

00:57:27   camaraderie like oh these times [TS]

00:57:29   have together and her wacky and then [TS]

00:57:31   we're going to transition right into [TS]

00:57:33   while you're unconscious I'm gonna kill [TS]

00:57:34   this guy [TS]

00:57:35   yeah also I'm not to mention obi-wan [TS]

00:57:37   unconscious but i'm pretty sure that [TS]

00:57:39   debt crushes his legs and then totally [TS]

00:57:42   fine i do ya later [TS]

00:57:43   no baby just gently pins him down a [TS]

00:57:46   column of Rock crushes legs in the [TS]

00:57:48   previous film I mean they came pretty [TS]

00:57:49   bad luck with lakes is robo let's say [TS]

00:57:52   one thing one thing I like in this first [TS]

00:57:55   segment is Dooku's crazy what what the [TS]

00:57:59   what are you doing [TS]

00:58:01   krazee-eyez 22 Palpatine well [TS]

00:58:03   Christopher Lee gives another really [TS]

00:58:04   game performance here however brief [TS]

00:58:06   which just serves to highlight the fact [TS]

00:58:07   that we only see him for like 30 seconds [TS]

00:58:09   in either film and he's the one guy that [TS]

00:58:11   manages to survive through two films as [TS]

00:58:14   a villain my note for that it's [TS]

00:58:16   Christopher Lee may be the only actor [TS]

00:58:17   who showed up for this scene [TS]

00:58:19   yeah yes hello again i will say that if [TS]

00:58:22   you if you add a cgi hand of Palpatine [TS]

00:58:26   waving his hand in front of an occasion [TS]

00:58:28   where he's like remember what your what [TS]

00:58:29   you told me about your mother in the [TS]

00:58:30   sand people you know this is is not the [TS]

00:58:33   Jedi way [TS]

00:58:34   that's okay Anakin all of a sudden he's [TS]

00:58:36   crazy like pseudo super-creepy speech [TS]

00:58:38   makes a lot more sense [TS]

00:58:40   well he doesn't even do that speech in [TS]

00:58:41   this point this point he's like easy [TS]

00:58:43   he's got to go on the ropes got the [TS]

00:58:44   lightsabers bias neck and Anakin goes I [TS]

00:58:47   shouldn't and the convincing argument [TS]

00:58:49   that brings them over to did the fact [TS]

00:58:51   that he should kill this guy is [TS]

00:58:52   populations do it like this it like a [TS]

00:58:55   while but I've been convinced by the [TS]

00:58:56   power of your no he doesn't just say do [TS]

00:58:58   it he says do it [TS]

00:58:59   yes videos voice he's putting he's [TS]

00:59:03   putting his Jedi his evil Darth surface [TS]

00:59:05   evils of powers to the test no he just [TS]

00:59:07   wanted him to have a mountain dew [TS]

00:59:09   yeah that's what they do and i can do [TS]

00:59:12   what i do is my question really is Dooku [TS]

00:59:15   was so surprised like doing out and [TS]

00:59:17   brought you around that's all took what [TS]

00:59:19   if i said i don't do it now you're not [TS]

00:59:21   getting that's the rest of the movie do [TS]

00:59:23   it don't do it don't do it [TS]

00:59:25   going to have to say you're making this [TS]

00:59:27   a whole lot less fun for me it's just [TS]

00:59:29   too easy [TS]

00:59:30   also does anyone else think like when [TS]

00:59:31   they walk in and you see Palpatine like [TS]

00:59:33   sitting in that chair it's like this is [TS]

00:59:35   kind of attended to folk episode on your [TS]

00:59:38   person understands look like as well [TS]

00:59:40   gotten and yet nobody can caught on to [TS]

00:59:43   the fact that he's the bad guy he's [TS]

00:59:44   sitting in the bad guy chair [TS]

00:59:45   yeah I don't understand how every single [TS]

00:59:47   one of these Sith dudes can sense the [TS]

00:59:49   great fear and anger and Anakin yet all [TS]

00:59:51   of his Jedi that's completely oblivious [TS]

00:59:53   to all guy seems cool [TS]

00:59:55   yeah that's just something that you get [TS]

00:59:56   on the dark side is the ability to sense [TS]

00:59:58   fear and anger [TS]

00:59:59   yeah I [TS]

00:59:59   yeah I [TS]

01:00:00   and yoda can do it in theory search your [TS]

01:00:02   feelings you know that this is a time [TS]

01:00:06   when I will tell you about Squarespace [TS]

01:00:09   you know building a website can be tough [TS]

01:00:11   even if you do know your way around [TS]

01:00:12   coding creating something that looks [TS]

01:00:14   good and works well is a time-consuming [TS]

01:00:17   affair at best whether it's for [TS]

01:00:19   something like a business site portfolio [TS]

01:00:21   a restaurant something that's not in [TS]

01:00:24   flash for example for a restaurant we [TS]

01:00:26   would like more of those but today you [TS]

01:00:28   probably need one [TS]

01:00:30   fortunately Squarespace is here to make [TS]

01:00:31   it easy to build beautiful websites [TS]

01:00:33   without being a super expert in all of [TS]

01:00:35   these different disciplines and even [TS]

01:00:37   without breaking a sweat [TS]

01:00:38   Squarespace provides simple powerful and [TS]

01:00:41   beautiful website templates for you to [TS]

01:00:42   work with these templates are part of [TS]

01:00:44   Squarespace is responsive design that [TS]

01:00:46   means it works great on a giant monitor [TS]

01:00:48   like my 27-inch imac looks great on [TS]

01:00:51   iphone to and every size in between so [TS]

01:00:54   you don't have to maintain different [TS]

01:00:55   templates and your site looks good no [TS]

01:00:57   matter who is looking at it and what [TS]

01:00:59   device they're looking at it on every [TS]

01:01:01   website you build also comes with a free [TS]

01:01:02   online store if you need it if you need [TS]

01:01:04   something minimalistic or powerful you [TS]

01:01:06   can use the cover page feature to set up [TS]

01:01:08   a single page site that is beautiful and [TS]

01:01:11   you can do it in minutes [TS]

01:01:12   it used to be when i started building [TS]

01:01:13   web pages it was just a disaster [TS]

01:01:16   txt files and CSS files weren't even [TS]

01:01:19   invented yet so you had multiple files [TS]

01:02:04   beautiful [TS]

01:02:05   the ship has hit at one point and [TS]

01:02:07   actually like Falls where I had that [TS]

01:02:10   moment of of the gravity questions which [TS]

01:02:12   like this [TS]

01:02:12   in space how is it to think about grab [TS]

01:02:14   how is it falling and when they tilt the [TS]

01:02:16   ship everybody tells off the gravity is [TS]

01:02:19   often [TS]

01:02:20   yeah but the falling it's like it's [TS]

01:02:21   falling out of the sky which doesn't [TS]

01:02:22   make any sense because it's a spaceship [TS]

01:02:24   and i know i know but i still I i was so [TS]

01:02:27   far out of it at this point that I was [TS]

01:02:28   just like what what is even what is even [TS]

01:02:31   happening here [TS]

01:02:31   I i have note that the saber duel that [TS]

01:02:34   we get around here felt especially fake [TS]

01:02:37   to me like it was a series of one [TS]

01:02:40   individuals in front of a green screen [TS]

01:02:43   differently is not up more that's [TS]

01:02:44   alright Angie a non-zero terrible stunt [TS]

01:02:47   double for Christopher Lee a problem [TS]

01:02:48   with this the fighting here as is the [TS]

01:02:50   problem with most of the other fight [TS]

01:02:52   scenes in this movie is that they're all [TS]

01:02:53   shot in kind of medium shots a lot of [TS]

01:02:57   times and a lot of time there [TS]

01:02:58   back-and-forth shots so that's really [TS]

01:03:00   all there is no it's not scale but 19 [TS]

01:03:02   scale like there's definitely no scale [TS]

01:03:03   but like there's no tracking there's no [TS]

01:03:05   it's not like oh yeah there it's totally [TS]

01:03:08   disjointed and so the having a stunt [TS]

01:03:10   double I'm sure was problematic for [TS]

01:03:12   shooting this in terms of having a [TS]

01:03:13   composite Christopher Lee face and [TS]

01:03:15   working me into like oh yes now let's [TS]

01:03:16   have a close-up to show that he really [TS]

01:03:17   is here fighting him in my other mother [TS]

01:03:20   weird thing is Anakin's like my powers [TS]

01:03:23   have doubled since the last time we've [TS]

01:03:24   been like that even mean like by what [TS]

01:03:26   scale like everybody ok wednesday he [TS]

01:03:28   went to destiny status comments look at [TS]

01:03:29   all [TS]

01:03:30   they have deployed the wilhelm scream by [TS]

01:03:34   this will help scream have 1545 what are [TS]

01:03:36   tired and they also have the the Jedi [TS]

01:03:39   get caught in the ratio thing which [TS]

01:03:40   seems a little opp to me because like [TS]

01:03:42   they're this is giant giant world that [TS]

01:03:44   they have with all sorts of things and [TS]

01:03:45   then all of a sudden something cg effect [TS]

01:03:47   comes out of nowhere and they're like [TS]

01:03:48   well this Trump's my lightsaber my force [TS]

01:03:51   power is like why don't they make [TS]

01:03:52   everything out of ratio then you could [TS]

01:03:53   win this war [TS]

01:03:55   also let's count how many times they say [TS]

01:03:57   ray shield in a 37 my god yeah that was [TS]

01:03:59   my plan to protect the ratio owners [TS]

01:04:01   shields [TS]

01:04:02   don't worry I didn't know that they had [TS]

01:04:04   rain shields [TS]

01:04:05   why is it that like after how many [TS]

01:04:08   people have to lose a hand in a [TS]

01:04:10   lightsaber battle before he said well [TS]

01:04:11   what if I just work got 'let's I want to [TS]

01:04:13   force we got let's what are you gonna [TS]

01:04:15   make the godless out-of-home more [TS]

01:04:17   lightsabers ratio is not something i [TS]

01:04:20   like that obi-wan says when they get [TS]

01:04:22   trapped [TS]

01:04:22   how did this happen were smarter than [TS]

01:04:24   this he responds like the script isn't [TS]

01:04:26   you know show no evidence of that and [TS]

01:04:28   that's why I got John took the words [TS]

01:04:30   right out of my notes [TS]

01:04:31   he's not starting over like there's a [TS]

01:04:33   good at the very end of this work [TS]

01:04:35   General Grievous has a right nice piece [TS]

01:04:37   of on-the-nose dialogue where he says [TS]

01:04:40   time to abandon the ship and then [TS]

01:04:42   abandoned the ship [TS]

01:04:43   thank you tell us what you want [TS]

01:04:45   everybody in this movie I think you're [TS]

01:04:47   gonna scream you're saying look at his [TS]

01:04:48   writing style it's like if only movies [TS]

01:04:51   were actually made this way like where [TS]

01:04:53   you just write down what you want to [TS]

01:04:54   happen we'll get to that later in the [TS]

01:04:55   love scenes but like if that we provide [TS]

01:04:57   us the way riding work for you just [TS]

01:04:58   write and now there is a scene where [TS]

01:05:00   there is an escape i'm doing a person [TS]

01:05:02   says I'm going to escape and then the [TS]

01:05:04   people say he has escaped it's the old [TS]

01:05:06   rhetorical trick of like telling what [TS]

01:05:08   you're gonna tell him tell him what you [TS]

01:05:10   told this work in Charlie Chaplin films [TS]

01:05:12   i do want to say that the running down [TS]

01:05:14   the elevator shaft thing is is a little [TS]

01:05:16   difficult for physics reasons but this [TS]

01:05:19   is one of those shining moments where [TS]

01:05:20   you watchin you go you know that's [TS]

01:05:21   actually pretty neat that's a fun [TS]

01:05:22   sequence there so so very rare in this [TS]

01:05:25   film but what doesn't work is the the [TS]

01:05:28   meeting with general grievous where [TS]

01:05:30   animals is generally shorter than expect [TS]

01:05:32   you're shorter than I expected [TS]

01:05:34   is that supposed to be an insult and if [TS]

01:05:35   so why he thinks it is because he says [TS]

01:05:39   Jedi scum or maybe he just like saying [TS]

01:05:41   Jedi scum O'Byrne he's hunched over [TS]

01:05:44   maybe it's all that because all hunched [TS]

01:05:46   over from one place window crushing him [TS]

01:05:48   and the animated club are serious i also [TS]

01:05:50   like that he happens to have two [TS]

01:05:51   available lightsaber pockets just like [TS]

01:05:53   we're just ready they're just just to [TS]

01:05:55   the perfect number you will be not a [TS]

01:05:56   tailor planet they can just add more [TS]

01:05:58   pockets at any time so he's got four [TS]

01:06:00   lightsaber in arms [TS]

01:06:01   yeah sure that's your palate Palpatine's [TS]

01:06:03   Taylor is tailored the planet boilers [TS]

01:06:05   boilers haberdasher on this thing that [TS]

01:06:07   the thing that really upsets me in this [TS]

01:06:09   is that all the sudden we've gone from [TS]

01:06:11   daring rescue of Chancellor Palpatine 20 [TS]

01:06:15   be one being like have a job to do [TS]

01:06:17   Anakin try not to upset him it's you [TS]

01:06:19   know we're gonna go back to disk [TS]

01:06:20   diplomacy [TS]

01:06:21   hey you know he grieves said the [TS]

01:06:23   negotiators are here so i guess it's [TS]

01:06:25   time to play negotiators that at least [TS]

01:06:27   until we execute our daring escape [TS]

01:06:29   yes please don't upset him with this [TS]

01:06:30   meaningless insult that makes absolutely [TS]

01:06:32   no sense at least he has those cool cool [TS]

01:06:34   more droids that have the little purple [TS]

01:06:36   stick things those guys are awesome [TS]

01:06:38   you know they're tough because they take [TS]

01:06:39   15 seconds to destroy instead of the [TS]

01:06:41   usual three right no yeah the second [TS]

01:06:43   that their own dedicated sound effect at [TS]

01:06:45   least they have little buzzy things at [TS]

01:06:46   the end which are shown to be somewhat [TS]

01:06:48   of a match for lightsaber like you can [TS]

01:06:50   clash with the lightsaber with him as [TS]

01:06:51   opposed to just being sliced in half [TS]

01:06:52   like butter like every other things like [TS]

01:06:54   there was contact with absolutely what [TS]

01:06:56   is the head off of them and they still [TS]

01:06:58   work the UH the the ship crashes and we [TS]

01:07:02   get quick whip watch we get another [TS]

01:07:03   happy landing go James Bond lines to [TS]

01:07:07   points1 that to go with the wise the [TS]

01:07:10   ship sinking what is blowing grievances [TS]

01:07:12   cloak when he's outside shifts i didn't [TS]

01:07:14   figure that one base [TS]

01:07:15   yeah i think the gas coming out of the [TS]

01:07:18   ship the solar we all style it's a force [TS]

01:07:22   that binds the entire source so if [TS]

01:07:23   you're a droid ish kind of guy i [TS]

01:07:26   actually thought that was kind of clever [TS]

01:07:27   it's like well i can i can just go out [TS]

01:07:29   in space so I'm just gonna break the [TS]

01:07:30   windshield here you guys will suffocate [TS]

01:07:32   and i'll just be climbing around our [TS]

01:07:34   psychological though so if you're gonna [TS]

01:07:36   have anybody do that maybe not a great [TS]

01:07:37   item especially not a guy with emphysema [TS]

01:07:39   he's got breathing problems already i [TS]

01:07:41   know i know but wait a minute we see [TS]

01:07:43   later that he has no lungs so I still [TS]

01:07:45   have a problem with the head and I balls [TS]

01:07:47   with a frozen wizard if you have know if [TS]

01:07:49   we're gonna go to that route [TS]

01:07:50   why is the ship even designed for people [TS]

01:07:52   to walk around in if you just have [TS]

01:07:53   robots if you can make robots Fighting's [TS]

01:07:56   youtube and watch channel to check the [TS]

01:07:57   ship [TS]

01:07:58   yeah it's extra and its surplus they and [TS]

01:08:01   and to the point Jason about the another [TS]

01:08:03   happy landing [TS]

01:08:04   I think a Jedi have only two modes [TS]

01:08:06   literal and deadpan or attempted man [TS]

01:08:08   that's the only line deliveries that [TS]

01:08:10   either of them having this entire movie [TS]

01:08:11   i would like to know when our to learn [TS]

01:08:13   to say he who he does it twice he [TS]

01:08:17   doesn't during the fight with the droids [TS]

01:08:18   it sounds sort of michael jackson i [TS]

01:08:20   think it's an okcupid he's been trying [TS]

01:08:22   to enlarge little Annie going on yeah it [TS]

01:08:24   be all so how did the fire ships know [TS]

01:08:28   that they're good guys crashing the bad [TS]

01:08:29   guys ship and why did you find other [TS]

01:08:31   fire shit the fire ships are confusing [TS]

01:08:34   is someone's idea i mean happy lands [TS]

01:08:36   have the ship like it's I don't know [TS]

01:08:38   and again it anything like that like a [TS]

01:08:40   daring and narrow escape or anything all [TS]

01:08:42   of that relies on you caring about the [TS]

01:08:44   characters and being invested in what's [TS]

01:08:47   happening to them and it doesn't matter [TS]

01:08:48   how well you execute something like the [TS]

01:08:50   elevator scene or some [TS]

01:08:51   like the crash scene if you're if you're [TS]

01:08:53   not on board with the movie you're just [TS]

01:08:55   like yeah yeah but if you are on board [TS]

01:08:57   the same scene can be super exciting [TS]

01:08:58   because you really care about the people [TS]

01:08:59   right but the laziness keeps coming [TS]

01:09:02   through here the thing that got me was [TS]

01:09:03   so we have this big fight [TS]

01:09:04   it's apparently over chorus and the next [TS]

01:09:06   day after his crash the ship it's like [TS]

01:09:08   everything's been mopped up we're all [TS]

01:09:09   good there's no fight happening yet [TS]

01:09:11   another happy day of course it [TS]

01:09:12   what the hell presumably the Chancellor [TS]

01:09:15   has been kidnapped from corisande [TS]

01:09:16   there's gotta be some maybe my room no [TS]

01:09:20   no stakes everything is predestined well [TS]

01:09:22   but it's all applauded by the Emperor [TS]

01:09:24   and he knows this is where he's going to [TS]

01:09:26   live so he doesn't want them to make a [TS]

01:09:28   mess though he does it all just [TS]

01:09:31   somewhere else [TS]

01:09:32   uh we get padma a here populations has [TS]

01:09:35   done is all this action secret stuff is [TS]

01:09:37   brace yourselves ya think that the good [TS]

01:09:40   times yes [TS]

01:09:41   not a damn thing happens for over 30 [TS]

01:09:45   minutes bad times they are coming you [TS]

01:09:46   you'll be begging for ships shooting [TS]

01:09:49   each other you don't care yeah here [TS]

01:09:50   comes Padma she's got the she's got the [TS]

01:09:51   princess leia buns [TS]

01:09:53   she says she says transition and any I'm [TS]

01:09:56   pregnant by the way my note here is [TS]

01:09:58   every time she calls him Annie I think [TS]

01:09:59   about that episode one kid and get to [TS]

01:10:02   super creeped out help it [TS]

01:10:04   and as for pregnancy apparently the Jedi [TS]

01:10:05   Academy believe in abstinence only [TS]

01:10:07   education because great Jedi can't thank [TS]

01:10:09   you figure out how to do not they also [TS]

01:10:11   give to alter sounds on on in the end [TS]

01:10:14   their reproductive technology saw in the [TS]

01:10:16   lead planet of the star republic / and [TS]

01:10:19   pocketing tell that its twin television [TS]

01:10:21   and she was kid they just like the [TS]

01:10:23   mystery of it they you know keep it a [TS]

01:10:25   mystery and she goes from all I've got [TS]

01:10:27   some wonderful news to looking terrified [TS]

01:10:30   and being like what are we going to do [TS]

01:10:31   so maybe you know either have her be [TS]

01:10:34   happy about it or have her be worried [TS]

01:10:36   about it but the constant fluctuations I [TS]

01:10:38   don't know if they're gonna blame that [TS]

01:10:39   on hormones or whatever but it's weird [TS]

01:10:41   also does anyone route room does anyone [TS]

01:10:43   actually remember the fact that they're [TS]

01:10:44   supposed to be secret spouses because it [TS]

01:10:47   doesn't seem like she kind of like that [TS]

01:10:48   behind or too high too high that's the [TS]

01:10:51   thing i didn't notice it until this is [TS]

01:10:52   this viewing the movie which maybe is my [TS]

01:10:54   second or third i don't i think i've [TS]

01:10:55   seen it before but like it by the end of [TS]

01:10:56   the movies like wait a second are we [TS]

01:10:57   supposed to believe like I've everyone [TS]

01:11:00   is the end we talk about what we want [TS]

01:11:01   goes Anakin's it's Anakin's baby [TS]

01:11:04   did you think was the father like this [TS]

01:11:05   he was showing everyone knows she's [TS]

01:11:07   pregnant we just wanna say anything [TS]

01:11:08   about maybe she's just putting on weight [TS]

01:11:09   you didn't like what is this i don't [TS]

01:11:12   even understand like the premise of the [TS]

01:11:14   movie we supposed to believe that people [TS]

01:11:15   don't notice she's pregnant or they do [TS]

01:11:16   notice but they don't think we'll be [TS]

01:11:18   rude to ask who the father is so we'll [TS]

01:11:19   be the ones like at the end and it was [TS]

01:11:21   charging me like you know she was [TS]

01:11:23   pregnant [TS]

01:11:24   who did you think was the father you [TS]

01:11:25   just that's why Jar Jar stop talking [TS]

01:11:28   yes and that's a fundamental problem of [TS]

01:11:29   this movie is it's an entirely unclear [TS]

01:11:31   from one scene to the next who else in [TS]

01:11:33   the cast is supposed to have what [TS]

01:11:34   information like who's supposed to know [TS]

01:11:37   that Palpatine is bad or not bad who's [TS]

01:11:39   supposed to know that Anakin and padmé [TS]

01:11:41   here together or not together that that [TS]

01:11:43   it's his childlike none of that is given [TS]

01:11:45   any context is she hiding her pregnancy [TS]

01:11:48   is gonna do people see that she's [TS]

01:11:49   showing she's staying in her room [TS]

01:11:51   combing her hair the whole time to hide [TS]

01:11:52   it like I don't think she is in her room [TS]

01:11:54   a lot actually i would not have [TS]

01:11:55   remembered that their wedding with their [TS]

01:11:57   like marriage was supposed to be a [TS]

01:11:58   secret had it not been for watching the [TS]

01:12:00   clone wars series again where it is once [TS]

01:12:02   again handled way better than it's [TS]

01:12:04   handled here I had that moment of like [TS]

01:12:05   oh right [TS]

01:12:06   secret wedding um I want to make a note [TS]

01:12:09   here and say I understand like jarred [TS]

01:12:12   loose a charger doesn't say anything [TS]

01:12:13   he's on this movie they realize okay [TS]

01:12:15   he's a liability we're not going to use [TS]

01:12:16   charger here natalie portman oh she [TS]

01:12:21   wasted and she is completely I mean it's [TS]

01:12:23   not like such performances with three [TS]

01:12:24   shadow of her former so the other [TS]

01:12:26   Murphy's character like where is that [TS]

01:12:28   pad me where is the one who had a gun [TS]

01:12:29   who is like you know leading the charge [TS]

01:12:32   daring and instead she combs her hair [TS]

01:12:35   like she doesn't stay in a room is kinda [TS]

01:12:37   nice just character assassination of the [TS]

01:12:39   height is not only is a waste of Natalie [TS]

01:12:41   Portman but Padme as a character is [TS]

01:12:43   completely destroyed by this movie she [TS]

01:12:46   is no she is a 0 in this movie is [TS]

01:12:48   ridiculous and she was pretty damn close [TS]

01:12:50   to zero in the previous movie right but [TS]

01:12:52   it's worse at least she could shoot but [TS]

01:12:54   she was a woman of action she did think [TS]

01:12:55   she was she she was living with her and [TS]

01:12:58   the gun leading the charge and going [TS]

01:12:59   into like she wanted to get things done [TS]

01:13:01   she wanted to make change politically [TS]

01:13:03   she had ambitions she was an important [TS]

01:13:05   person chef Angie she just stays in the [TS]

01:13:07   room and her biggest concern is about [TS]

01:13:09   like house Anakin feeling that's it yep [TS]

01:13:11   she's she never leaves the room with the [TS]

01:13:14   exception of getting on the ship to go [TS]

01:13:16   find Anakin [TS]

01:13:17   for this entire movie and again this is [TS]

01:13:19   a place where that actually could have [TS]

01:13:21   been explained in the movie as as soon [TS]

01:13:23   as I figured out found out I'm pregnant [TS]

01:13:24   I'm hiding and you know i'm i'm staying [TS]

01:13:27   here I've been you know having Jar Jar [TS]

01:13:30   take your business or my aides take care [TS]

01:13:32   of business [TS]

01:13:33   I don't want anybody to find out let's [TS]

01:13:35   go back to Naboo except we can't leave [TS]

01:13:37   because there's still blood like they're [TS]

01:13:39   there could have been so so much solved [TS]

01:13:42   very quickly without her seeming [TS]

01:13:44   basically completely helpless [TS]

01:13:45   yeah and she would have to be confirmed [TS]

01:13:47   conflicted about that or maybe [TS]

01:13:49   institution just be there combing your [TS]

01:13:50   hair and wondering about hob make up the [TS]

01:13:52   baby's room she would need to be a [TS]

01:13:54   character you know just very blase about [TS]

01:13:56   the fact that the Queen will likely kick [TS]

01:13:58   her out of the Senate if she has a baby [TS]

01:13:59   so I just get really like glass ceiling [TS]

01:14:03   that seemed to unenlightened for a cup [TS]

01:14:05   for a cup for a planet that will elect a [TS]

01:14:07   fourteen-year-old boy girl as your queen [TS]

01:14:09   and then like I have a pregnancy that's [TS]

01:14:11   the that's the good you get knocked up [TS]

01:14:13   and that's it you're out now up sorry [TS]

01:14:15   well they have they have they have [TS]

01:14:16   issues with young women clearly on Naboo [TS]

01:14:18   clearly also i'm not sure that George [TS]

01:14:20   Lucas really knows how pregnancy works [TS]

01:14:22   but this is this is the first time we [TS]

01:14:25   hear that she's pregnant and the rest of [TS]

01:14:27   this movie that just really want it [TS]

01:14:29   takes place over multiple months but I [TS]

01:14:31   think she's ready to deliver [TS]

01:14:32   I mean the film itself seems like it [TS]

01:14:34   takes multiple months but yeah but the [TS]

01:14:37   action on screen does not and and also [TS]

01:14:39   in that scene where like so if they're [TS]

01:14:40   pregnant we go back is coming your hair [TS]

01:14:42   on the balcony and Anakin is looking at [TS]

01:14:44   her I like to watch you creepily brush [TS]

01:14:46   your hair [TS]

01:14:46   I'm amazed by his ability to look creepy [TS]

01:14:49   while look at that wife I get the idea [TS]

01:14:51   of the any mention this the idiot [TS]

01:14:55   this is the indexer classic story of the [TS]

01:14:57   she's not pregnant she's having a [TS]

01:14:59   pregnant except that for plot reasons [TS]

01:15:01   she's on Khorasan when the right thing [TS]

01:15:03   to do sort of the classic style would be [TS]

01:15:06   that she has to go visit her sister in [TS]

01:15:08   the country on Naboo for about nine [TS]

01:15:10   months right and then she comes back and [TS]

01:15:13   she's ok I'm back I feel better now [TS]

01:15:15   Jason there's war the war ! that you [TS]

01:15:19   know what if course not was being [TS]

01:15:20   invaded as we are led to believe in the [TS]

01:15:22   beginning wouldn't they have evacuated [TS]

01:15:23   the Senators given that you know the [TS]

01:15:25   Senators and the Chancellor kind of hold [TS]

01:15:27   the power and if the Chancellor has been [TS]

01:15:28   kidnapped then the senator should [TS]

01:15:30   probably be at [TS]

01:15:31   deep inside she spends a lot of time on [TS]

01:15:33   balconies in a giant place that's a huge [TS]

01:15:35   yes definitely with larger really gonna [TS]

01:15:37   hide your pregnancy spend a lot of time [TS]

01:15:39   out of paparazzi we're definitely no [TS]

01:15:41   droid paparazzi and on top of that let's [TS]

01:15:44   spend it in night where the entire time [TS]

01:15:46   is there is there really a scene where [TS]

01:15:47   she's not in lingerie uncomfortable [TS]

01:15:49   night we're like she's bringing things [TS]

01:15:50   with beads and those beads are just [TS]

01:15:52   going to you pearls there you try to lay [TS]

01:15:55   down on those you're gonna have big [TS]

01:15:56   circular marks on your arm when you wake [TS]

01:15:58   up at some point I was like wait hold on [TS]

01:15:59   is that address or a nightgown I can't [TS]

01:16:02   actually tell cuz I thought it was just [TS]

01:16:03   a dress and she goes to bed nude so [TS]

01:16:05   maybe she's known i can I don't know so [TS]

01:16:07   i wrote down the classic dialogue that [TS]

01:16:09   i'm going to recite hear you I'll help [TS]

01:16:11   I'll help [TS]

01:16:12   you're so beautiful it's only because [TS]

01:16:13   i'm so in love but it's only because i'm [TS]

01:16:16   so in love with you know you and they [TS]

01:16:18   might have my notes just say ugh i have [TS]

01:16:23   Jesus this dialogue written down at this [TS]

01:16:25   point so love has blinded you [TS]

01:16:28   yeah well that's not exactly what I [TS]

01:16:29   meant but it's probably true and seen [TS]

01:16:32   that's really I think we're getting some [TS]

01:16:34   insights into why like Lucasfilm was ok [TS]

01:16:36   with so many people writing like fan [TS]

01:16:38   fiction and fan fiction movies that's [TS]

01:16:40   where they got all this dialogue heard [TS]

01:16:42   someone by him up the Saurus a fan [TS]

01:16:44   fiction has a way better dialogue in [TS]

01:16:45   this like what was being established in [TS]

01:16:47   the scene that they love each other by [TS]

01:16:49   having the character say i'm so in love [TS]

01:16:50   with you know i'm so in love with you [TS]

01:16:52   and i will i will say that it does nail [TS]

01:16:55   the fanfiction aspect of people bragging [TS]

01:16:57   about romance and love who have never [TS]

01:16:59   had a romance or been in love [TS]

01:17:01   oh my god Anika wakes up at from a bad [TS]

01:17:04   dream with his metal arm which is just a [TS]

01:17:06   reminder that he lost his arm and the in [TS]

01:17:09   the in the intervening time between now [TS]

01:17:11   and when Luke gets his arm cut off in 20 [TS]

01:17:13   years the technology improves quite a [TS]

01:17:15   bit because little ones to a real the [TS]

01:17:17   one place but they realized we can make [TS]

01:17:20   this look and uh and he has a [TS]

01:17:23   premonition that bad things are going to [TS]

01:17:25   happen with Padme that is a word a [TS]

01:17:27   premonition i wrote down that he dreams [TS]

01:17:30   of Star Trek one because it kind of [TS]

01:17:31   reminded me of yes there's a wormhole [TS]

01:17:35   it's very it's a very cheap effect for a [TS]

01:17:37   movie that is otherwise full of very [TS]

01:17:39   expensive effects and yet it still [TS]

01:17:40   manages to look really terrible and it's [TS]

01:17:43   cheap and it's vague like weed [TS]

01:17:44   on is point i guess it's supposed to try [TS]

01:17:46   to communicate some kind of emotion [TS]

01:17:48   rather than a series of events but it's [TS]

01:17:50   so pivotal to his supposed to turn to [TS]

01:17:52   the darkside he understand exactly [TS]

01:17:53   what's going on here and that that he's [TS]

01:17:55   totally convinced this is going to [TS]

01:17:56   happen all we see is that she said like [TS]

01:17:58   it was something else to get to compare [TS]

01:18:00   to like Empire where Luke has [TS]

01:18:02   premonitions that we don't see about his [TS]

01:18:04   friends being in pain and the others [TS]

01:18:05   like they might die they might not you [TS]

01:18:08   know he's given a choice like it is is [TS]

01:18:10   not so concrete that like my entire life [TS]

01:18:13   is going to hinge on this thing that I [TS]

01:18:14   absolutely positively sure it's gonna [TS]

01:18:16   happen exactly this way unless I do [TS]

01:18:17   something there should be ambiguity that [TS]

01:18:19   should be like well you know if you [TS]

01:18:21   leave now help him you could but you [TS]

01:18:23   know like it's stephen now maybe that [TS]

01:18:25   you know always in motion but Bob this [TS]

01:18:27   is just like no totally solid she's [TS]

01:18:29   gonna die unless I kill children also so [TS]

01:18:31   many so many of us like think that [TS]

01:18:33   empires the greatest movie like in the [TS]

01:18:35   entire series with with good reason but [TS]

01:18:37   that but that was something always [TS]

01:18:38   annoyed me that you know it makes a big [TS]

01:18:40   deal no no look you can't leave now [TS]

01:18:42   because disaster will happen and your [TS]

01:18:44   friends are gonna have to die and all [TS]

01:18:45   this sort of stuff [TS]

01:18:46   nothing really happens as a consulting [TS]

01:18:48   bad happens as a consequence of him [TS]

01:18:50   leaving we learn here that yoga doesn't [TS]

01:18:52   know what the hell he's talking about he [TS]

01:18:53   barely survived and Yoda said didn't SI [TS]

01:18:56   he was saying this is a safe bet the [TS]

01:18:58   safe bet is to stay here you need to [TS]

01:18:59   complete your training for the good of [TS]

01:19:00   the universe it's better for you to stay [TS]

01:19:02   here let your friends die but Lucas [TS]

01:19:04   showing his character by saying yes for [TS]

01:19:05   the good of the universe maybe it's [TS]

01:19:06   better for me to stay here and [TS]

01:19:08   potentially let my friends died because [TS]

01:19:09   it's better for me to get completely [TS]

01:19:11   trained to save everybody but look shows [TS]

01:19:13   us not the kind of person i am going to [TS]

01:19:14   try to help my friends even if it means [TS]

01:19:16   me almost dying a side note is is that [TS]

01:19:18   is that instantly as your point about [TS]

01:19:21   not seeing the divisions mark hamill [TS]

01:19:23   manages to actually sell that so you [TS]

01:19:25   know anyone who wants to talk about Mark [TS]

01:19:27   Hamill not being greatest actor he's not [TS]

01:19:28   a greatest acted like he manages to make [TS]

01:19:30   you believe that there is something bad [TS]

01:19:32   going to happen without us ever seeing [TS]

01:19:33   it was Hayden Christensen can even make [TS]

01:19:35   us believe what we've Johnny cine yeah i [TS]

01:19:38   was sleeping shirtless did you notice [TS]

01:19:39   let's say you to my metal arm do you [TS]

01:19:41   like my metal arm pressure have some [TS]

01:19:44   more fun my golden army visits Yoda for [TS]

01:19:48   some therapy but Yoda is not a very good [TS]

01:19:50   therapist [TS]

01:19:52   no says don't sweat it death happens be [TS]

01:19:54   happy your wife I don't know about is [TS]

01:19:56   going [TS]

01:19:56   you guys that this whole this whole [TS]

01:19:59   section is deadly scenes of people [TS]

01:20:00   talking on Khorasan like we're back to [TS]

01:20:02   like it's flashbacks of like no not the [TS]

01:20:04   couches not the rooms not the talking [TS]

01:20:06   not that not the shot of this person [TS]

01:20:07   shot at this person is just your doom [TS]

01:20:09   two catches for ever happens for 30 [TS]

01:20:11   minutes John 30 minutes [TS]

01:20:13   I i can I can summarize this actually my [TS]

01:20:15   notes to a pretty great job of [TS]

01:20:17   summarizing the plot here here let me [TS]

01:20:18   let me throw some on here [TS]

01:20:20   political science time we're giving more [TS]

01:20:22   powers to the Chancellor and it can [TS]

01:20:24   either be on the council [TS]

01:20:25   I need you more than you will know haha [TS]

01:20:28   oh did I say that out loud [TS]

01:20:30   how can you be on the council and not a [TS]

01:20:32   master well you know it's you [TS]

01:20:34   at least they let him get rid of the [TS]

01:20:35   stupid rat tail and I return I miss I [TS]

01:20:38   miss puppet Yoda dimension because I I [TS]

01:20:42   didn't mind some of the CGI Yoda but [TS]

01:20:45   here I really felt like boy I miss [TS]

01:20:48   puppet unit that was a different guy [TS]

01:20:49   than this guy [TS]

01:20:51   it's not the making but even if you made [TS]

01:20:53   public you want to say the same lines [TS]

01:20:54   it's just like these are these are not [TS]

01:20:56   great and i use of the whole the whole [TS]

01:20:58   attachment philosophy like I it's hard [TS]

01:21:01   to watch this and not try to like you [TS]

01:21:03   know i'm going to psychoanalyze the [TS]

01:21:04   people who made this movie but like I [TS]

01:21:06   don't think you can do that I think it's [TS]

01:21:07   fair correct but i find myself going [TS]

01:21:09   towards like is this like the Pope the [TS]

01:21:11   post-divorce Lucas type of you know that [TS]

01:21:14   all the attachments in your life end up [TS]

01:21:16   hurting you and it's but like I don't [TS]

01:21:17   think it is because like that's not the [TS]

01:21:18   message of the movie that's but it just [TS]

01:21:20   like that the philosophy espoused by [TS]

01:21:22   yoga and the prequels does not connect [TS]

01:21:24   with me in any way we have a philosophy [TS]

01:21:25   espoused by Yoda and the real story we [TS]

01:21:28   also get what is an attempt at like I've [TS]

01:21:30   said before some some complex thoughts [TS]

01:21:33   about political science and the nature [TS]

01:21:34   of and the nature of dictatorship and [TS]

01:21:36   democracy [TS]

01:21:37   this represents a failure to listen but [TS]

01:21:39   what you get is that you know the [TS]

01:21:41   council wants you to spy on the [TS]

01:21:42   Chancellor it's literally like does he [TS]

01:21:45   like me does he like like your knife [TS]

01:21:47   practice yeah don't tell him and and I [TS]

01:21:49   my note is this is politics as viewed by [TS]

01:21:52   a child this is a childlike view of [TS]

01:21:55   politics even if George Lucas wanted to [TS]

01:21:57   make a movie about political boring [TS]

01:21:59   political science that's obvious and [TS]

01:22:00   stupid and nobody wants to see it [TS]

01:22:02   his grasp I have to i'm just going to [TS]

01:22:04   say it and I i know this is incredibly [TS]

01:22:06   mean but his grasp of political science [TS]

01:22:10   is so simplistic that it makes me wonder [TS]

01:22:13   is this guy stupid because this is just [TS]

01:22:16   it is a joke [TS]

01:22:17   it is an absolute shitshow makes it [TS]

01:22:20   makes aaron sorkin look like a genius [TS]

01:22:21   because he does those ridiculous like [TS]

01:22:23   his things are completely unrealistic [TS]

01:22:24   like the west wing is like so silly and [TS]

01:22:26   yet it is closed and it is like a [TS]

01:22:28   supercharged fantasy version of reality [TS]

01:22:31   but it but it's so much closer than this [TS]

01:22:33   because like okay this is not the way it [TS]

01:22:34   really is but wouldn't it be cool if and [TS]

01:22:36   this is ok this is obviously really is [TS]

01:22:38   and it wouldn't be cool if it was just [TS]

01:22:39   like a cell stupid it's just one another [TS]

01:22:41   it's just another example start a [TS]

01:22:43   half-assed attempts to trying to turn [TS]

01:22:45   something into a valid point and the [TS]

01:22:47   other point the other place this sort of [TS]

01:22:48   comes up is I think Anakin has this sort [TS]

01:22:50   of weird inconsistency and Trust of [TS]

01:22:52   padmé and we get this half-assed other [TS]

01:22:55   half-assed attempt of trying to [TS]

01:22:57   insinuate that maybe he thinks obi-wan [TS]

01:22:59   and she have something on the side [TS]

01:23:01   although they never gonna decide what [TS]

01:23:03   they're doing with that it's never its [TS]

01:23:05   but it's like it's kind of brought up [TS]

01:23:06   towards the end it's never even hinted [TS]

01:23:08   it's not believable at any point that [TS]

01:23:10   anyone reasonable at all it's literally [TS]

01:23:12   like a something out of a plot automatic [TS]

01:23:14   like no jealousy [TS]

01:23:16   yeah let's put in some jealousy like [TS]

01:23:17   obi-wan and pawed me might be having an [TS]

01:23:19   affair really good because he visited [TS]

01:23:22   once [TS]

01:23:22   oh yeah well app obi-wan was here wasn't [TS]

01:23:25   his windsong stays on my mind haha yeah [TS]

01:23:29   once upon a time an early script of [TS]

01:23:32   episode three surface and i want to say [TS]

01:23:34   right after episode 1 but before [TS]

01:23:36   episodes two and three and that script [TS]

01:23:38   was all about basically ob1 and Padme [TS]

01:23:41   coming close to having an affair and [TS]

01:23:43   Anna can basically go to reestablish [TS]

01:23:45   whether that was real or just like a fan [TS]

01:23:47   script I have no idea but either way is [TS]

01:23:50   more believable [TS]

01:23:51   yeah there was no chemistry between [TS]

01:23:52   those actors and second movie so no but [TS]

01:23:56   it's but it's one of those things that [TS]

01:23:57   like if that was in kit like of some [TS]

01:24:00   kind of fact it's almost been completely [TS]

01:24:03   stripped out of this movie and there are [TS]

01:24:04   hints where could it could have been in [TS]

01:24:06   this movie but like you said it's it's [TS]

01:24:08   it's theirs [TS]

01:24:10   there are no connections here they're [TS]

01:24:11   just like Oh what about this plot point [TS]

01:24:13   what about this plot point maybe won't [TS]

01:24:15   we'll just push this all together and [TS]

01:24:16   hope that this is a movie works this is [TS]

01:24:19   the guy I think in some ways this little [TS]

01:24:21   second section of this movie is [TS]

01:24:23   the nadir of the love of Star Wars [TS]

01:24:27   because this is this is George Lucas's [TS]

01:24:29   big political science payoff and we we [TS]

01:24:34   know we're going to crank up the action [TS]

01:24:35   and have to come to the Fallen Vatican [TS]

01:24:37   so this is the chance so like and it is [TS]

01:24:39   like half an hour long so we get the at [TS]

01:24:40   this point it's only been 20 minutes we [TS]

01:24:42   get the Anakin I think this war is [TS]

01:24:44   destroying the principles of the [TS]

01:24:45   Republic what if democracy no longer [TS]

01:24:46   exists which is completely asinine but [TS]

01:24:48   he is sort of supposed to be clueless [TS]

01:24:50   and asinine here my wife turned to me at [TS]

01:24:53   this point and said what does she see in [TS]

01:24:54   him [TS]

01:24:55   there are no answers there people [TS]

01:24:57   there's no answer for that Palpatine [TS]

01:24:58   talks to Anakin the Jedi Council want to [TS]

01:25:01   take control the Republican that's a [TS]

01:25:02   really reasonable premise I didn't [TS]

01:25:04   appreciate the line that Palpatine has [TS]

01:25:06   resist [TS]

01:25:07   search your feelings you know and Vicki [TS]

01:25:09   don't you close to be out the opera [TS]

01:25:15   scene had some things to recommend it [TS]

01:25:16   though you have the one thing I got a [TS]

01:25:18   point out about an opera screensaver [TS]

01:25:20   it's it's it's rags flying around in [TS]

01:25:23   giant bubbles and I'm gonna be our it's [TS]

01:25:25   it looks suspiciously like the Diahann [TS]

01:25:27   Carroll segment from the holidays but [TS]

01:25:29   the teacher is trying to teach Anakin [TS]

01:25:32   how reproduction works it's interesting [TS]

01:25:36   that you say that because at this point [TS]

01:25:37   he brings out the story of Darth [TS]

01:25:39   Plagueis quote in France the wise with a [TS]

01:25:42   name like that you know he's a fine [TS]

01:25:43   fellow and the point that he makes is he [TS]

01:25:46   could use the Force to influence the [TS]

01:25:47   midi-chlorians to create dot life and at [TS]

01:25:51   this point he looks very pointedly at [TS]

01:25:52   Anakin on the last word and I believe [TS]

01:25:55   this is to suggest that she means virgin [TS]

01:25:57   birth was planted by ass it all along in [TS]

01:26:00   fact i read an article that said that in [TS]

01:26:01   a previous version of the screenplay [TS]

01:26:03   that was then never shot but but it was [TS]

01:26:05   in one of the last wraps it was stated [TS]

01:26:07   outright that that the Emperor [TS]

01:26:10   essentially created Anakin so this is [TS]

01:26:12   basically i am your father and yeah [TS]

01:26:15   India's I you gotta love Darth Plagueis [TS]

01:26:17   but though you know I actually there's [TS]

01:26:20   one thing in this scene that I really ok [TS]

01:26:22   so i kinda like the the implication that [TS]

01:26:24   he created an American i think that's [TS]

01:26:26   kind of fun i really like the [TS]

01:26:28   implication where he tells this whole [TS]

01:26:30   story about how amazing dark Darth [TS]

01:26:32   Plagueis is he could keep people from [TS]

01:26:34   dying which is yeah he's trying to play [TS]

01:26:35   on Anakin's fear [TS]

01:26:37   that Padma is gonna die but I like it [TS]

01:26:39   here I like he's hot as apprentice [TS]

01:26:41   everything he knew and then there's some [TS]

01:26:42   printers killed him in his sleep [TS]

01:26:44   haha oh did I mention did I not mention [TS]

01:26:46   that was me that implication i don't [TS]

01:26:49   think is the only one who is able to [TS]

01:26:51   sell these lines like it's just not a [TS]

01:26:52   well-written scene but it is movie at [TS]

01:26:54   least in the kind of weird background he [TS]

01:26:56   is the only actor who who like I feeling [TS]

01:26:59   McDermott and mcdermott shows up even [TS]

01:27:01   for everything yeah he is pretty good i [TS]

01:27:04   have to say i wrote down at one point [TS]

01:27:05   you know I really like him he he gives [TS]

01:27:09   it his all in this he really is a good [TS]

01:27:11   to see real villain he doesn't you know [TS]

01:27:13   if you just give him better things to [TS]

01:27:15   say but in this in the scene like the [TS]

01:27:17   mood and the background and the fact [TS]

01:27:18   that the two of them are alone there [TS]

01:27:20   like he tells a stupid story the lines [TS]

01:27:22   are silly the the one note about the [TS]

01:27:23   readings here is they did this again and [TS]

01:27:25   I just I it drives me insane like a [TS]

01:27:27   Republican says they're playing to [TS]

01:27:29   betray me and Lucas is a look and [TS]

01:27:31   Anakin's line is I don't think and then [TS]

01:27:34   he gets cut off and he does it in the [TS]

01:27:36   worst possible like the worst possible [TS]

01:27:38   like I don't think I'd like a net-like [TS]

01:27:40   you can tell he wasn't going to continue [TS]

01:27:42   design that was the end of the sentence [TS]

01:27:44   actually yeah exactly that's what it [TS]

01:27:46   seemed like [TS]

01:27:47   and why how can you not do that he did [TS]

01:27:49   in the first movie there instances that [TS]

01:27:51   just that's like moviemaking 101like [TS]

01:27:53   when a character has a line that trails [TS]

01:27:55   off our they're interrupted you have to [TS]

01:27:56   make it seem naturalistic you can't have [TS]

01:27:58   them read the I don't think line and [TS]

01:27:59   have them stop it just boggles my mind [TS]

01:28:02   how even everything like there's are [TS]

01:28:03   important that the best scene in the [TS]

01:28:05   movie they can manage to blow it by just [TS]

01:28:07   not something like on a technicality and [TS]

01:28:09   something so easy to two things about [TS]

01:28:11   the same 11 line i do like he is good as [TS]

01:28:13   a point of view which is obviously [TS]

01:28:15   intended to hearken to obi-wan's faster [TS]

01:28:17   as you and actually has the benefit of [TS]

01:28:20   being like in a better movie [TS]

01:28:21   oh that's kind of what this is about [TS]

01:28:23   again as John mentioned earlier from my [TS]

01:28:25   point of view the Jedi are evil [TS]

01:28:27   Anakin Anakin is good like anakin thinks [TS]

01:28:29   he's doing something like could we see [TS]

01:28:32   comments on Aris to say that this at the [TS]

01:28:35   opera scene in particular any an [TS]

01:28:38   imaginary a set of prequels that were [TS]

01:28:41   good this opera scene might actually [TS]

01:28:43   have it okay if you have you have to [TS]

01:28:46   explain why Anakin is super interested [TS]

01:28:48   in the ability to keep people from dying [TS]

01:28:50   because I because that is that you know [TS]

01:28:52   this is the glimmer apart this like the [TS]

01:28:53   glimmer of hope in the depths of despair [TS]

01:28:55   of of the worst part of this movie [TS]

01:28:58   why is he not the least bit suspicious [TS]

01:28:59   about Palpatine knowing any of this [TS]

01:29:02   stuff is actually got on me is realizing [TS]

01:29:05   oh yeah let me tell you all about this [TS]

01:29:06   stuff and he's like that sounds really [TS]

01:29:09   interesting tell me more [TS]

01:29:11   again in a better movie we would [TS]

01:29:12   actually feel the fact that Palpatine [TS]

01:29:14   has essentially been a father to him to [TS]

01:29:17   obi-wan's older brother and now he [TS]

01:29:19   implicitly trust him which we don't get [TS]

01:29:21   any of this an advocate would need to [TS]

01:29:23   have a lust for power like he doesn't he [TS]

01:29:26   never establish Anakin's lust for power [TS]

01:29:27   like that comes out of nowhere like I [TS]

01:29:29   want to be in charge and super powerful [TS]

01:29:31   like the only way you're attracted to [TS]

01:29:33   somebody who gives you the promise of [TS]

01:29:34   ultimate power is if you're one of those [TS]

01:29:36   people who just like is is you know [TS]

01:29:38   craves power Anakin is mostly just been [TS]

01:29:40   ineffectual one whiny and not really [TS]

01:29:41   like going to rule everybody [TS]

01:29:43   well as we learned earlier Anakin is so [TS]

01:29:45   dumb that he's actually told the [TS]

01:29:47   Chancellor of the the Senate or the [TS]

01:29:49   Republic who it believes not to be evil [TS]

01:29:52   at this point that he slaughtered a [TS]

01:29:53   bunch of innocents and people on [TS]

01:29:55   Tatooine because again if you go back to [TS]

01:29:58   the idea that Palpatine is his father [TS]

01:30:01   figure he trusts Palpatine he wants to [TS]

01:30:03   work with Palpatine and crazy alternate [TS]

01:30:05   universe better movie this is the you [TS]

01:30:08   know Palpatine is is given him life [TS]

01:30:11   lessons when he's worried and confused [TS]

01:30:13   and doesn't know who to turn to and the [TS]

01:30:15   Jedi are frustrating him i don't know i [TS]

01:30:17   remember when i told my dad about all [TS]

01:30:19   those dead hitchhikers and it didn't go [TS]

01:30:20   at all like this this this could have [TS]

01:30:22   been a better in a better movie this [TS]

01:30:23   would've been such a pivotal scene you [TS]

01:30:25   think about so many other movies that [TS]

01:30:26   happen we're in that somewhere in act 3 [TS]

01:30:29   there is a complete pause to the action [TS]

01:30:31   maybe even other movies in which there [TS]

01:30:33   is actually a scene like at the Opera at [TS]

01:30:35   the theater where this the correct [TS]

01:30:38   father-figure can talk to the growing in [TS]

01:30:41   power but still quite impressionable [TS]

01:30:43   young person to simply say here's my [TS]

01:30:45   worldview and here is a there are so [TS]

01:30:48   many opportunities available to you [TS]

01:30:49   right now I don't want you to be set [TS]

01:30:51   down the wrong path and i'm going to [TS]

01:30:52   explain to you what I how I see the [TS]

01:30:54   world and why i believe the things have [TS]

01:30:57   to be the way that they have to be [TS]

01:30:59   and given that this was a situation [TS]

01:31:01   which [TS]

01:31:02   the kid is now being told by being used [TS]

01:31:05   by the senator to say i want you to be [TS]

01:31:09   sort of my eyes and ears my spy as you [TS]

01:31:11   will to the Jedi Council but the Jedi [TS]

01:31:13   saying i want you to be my spy into what [TS]

01:31:16   the senator is going to this could have [TS]

01:31:17   been a better written movie with a [TS]

01:31:19   better actor this could have been one of [TS]

01:31:21   those things that you just ski on when [TS]

01:31:25   you're watching a blu-ray you just [TS]

01:31:26   replay that scene over and over again as [TS]

01:31:28   it is it's completely squandered because [TS]

01:31:30   what they want to do is simply say he [TS]

01:31:32   doesn't want his wife to die and so he's [TS]

01:31:34   willing to make a deal with the devil in [TS]

01:31:35   order to make sure his wife doesn't buy [TS]

01:31:37   which is boring as hell yeah in the [TS]

01:31:40   magical alternate version of this movie [TS]

01:31:42   you've got Anakin as a young kid who [TS]

01:31:44   believes that you know truth and justice [TS]

01:31:46   in the you know the american way for a [TS]

01:31:48   better lack of term where you know he [TS]

01:31:50   doesn't believe he hate slavery he wants [TS]

01:31:52   everybody to be free he wants you know [TS]

01:31:53   he has all these grand ideals about what [TS]

01:31:57   politics should look like and then who [TS]

01:31:59   are the first two people that he really [TS]

01:32:01   meets or the first three people that [TS]

01:32:02   really meets in bonds with he meets a [TS]

01:32:04   jedi knight who are supposed to and you [TS]

01:32:06   know I resemble all good and that's good [TS]

01:32:09   and wonderful universe he meets a queen [TS]

01:32:11   who is very interested in politics and [TS]

01:32:13   about doing the right thing and he meets [TS]

01:32:15   you know the senator later the [TS]

01:32:16   chancellor who is again extensively [TS]

01:32:19   believes in the right way to do justice [TS]

01:32:21   so in theory you could have built a [TS]

01:32:22   movie on basically these three different [TS]

01:32:25   viewpoints and how he's basically been [TS]

01:32:27   tugged and pulled and his view his view [TS]

01:32:29   has been shaped on this is the right [TS]

01:32:31   this is what democracy should look like [TS]

01:32:33   this is this is why democracy is feeling [TS]

01:32:35   us this is why you know everything's [TS]

01:32:37   falling apart and you have Palpatine [TS]

01:32:39   from that idea being like I'm I'm subtly [TS]

01:32:43   slowly shaping your view of what a good [TS]

01:32:45   society should be and and why the Jedi [TS]

01:32:48   are manipulating and destroying my [TS]

01:32:50   society like there's again there's so [TS]

01:32:53   much potential here and all of it is [TS]

01:32:55   completely wasted all the frustration [TS]

01:32:58   unfortunately all of that would require [TS]

01:32:59   subtext which this movie lacks yeah yeah [TS]

01:33:02   well and this is I mean this is a one of [TS]

01:33:05   the ways that i have a problem i have [TS]

01:33:07   these two problems i have a problem with [TS]

01:33:09   Anakin and the light as i mentioned a [TS]

01:33:10   problem with sort of how he becomes [TS]

01:33:12   Darth Vader and one of the problems is [TS]

01:33:13   fundamentally [TS]

01:33:15   I don't feel like anakin is is I would [TS]

01:33:19   have liked to have seen that story [TS]

01:33:20   surrounding exactly what you're talking [TS]

01:33:21   about that Anakin Anakin is not making a [TS]

01:33:24   decision to sell his soul to save his [TS]

01:33:28   his wife like Andy said I I want in [TS]

01:33:31   Anakin to believe that this is the best [TS]

01:33:34   path you have genuinely doing what he [TS]

01:33:36   thinks is right and that he has reasons [TS]

01:33:38   to think that [TS]

01:33:39   and although we look at it and go oh you [TS]

01:33:41   know stupid kid you don't understand you [TS]

01:33:44   don't you don't understand history [TS]

01:33:46   you don't realize where this leads but [TS]

01:33:48   we don't really get that wewe just again [TS]

01:33:50   if there's the shortcut which is you [TS]

01:33:52   know a Svengali takes him under his wing [TS]

01:33:55   and hoodwinks him into doing things and [TS]

01:33:58   and and that's like when he's tricked it [TS]

01:34:01   doesn't have the impact of him making [TS]

01:34:03   those decisions for himself and making [TS]

01:34:05   those mistakes doesn't have any agencies [TS]

01:34:07   as far as zombies like a feather in the [TS]

01:34:09   wind in this movie I like all his [TS]

01:34:10   decisions are made for him by outside [TS]

01:34:12   forces and he just sits there and wines [TS]

01:34:14   or is creepy [TS]

01:34:14   yeah buddy easy he says he's a chump [TS]

01:34:16   he's fooled and and again if you then [TS]

01:34:18   think this is Darth Vader you think oh [TS]

01:34:21   my god [TS]

01:34:21   Darth Vader is not a chump who got who [TS]

01:34:24   got tricked into becoming a Sith Lord [TS]

01:34:26   and now just sort of has to live with it [TS]

01:34:28   that's not the darth vader that i have [TS]

01:34:30   in my mind he has a consistent worldview [TS]

01:34:33   that says that look you you ruled by the [TS]

01:34:36   fist and that you can't simply let [TS]

01:34:38   things happen you have to make things [TS]

01:34:40   happen and you basically have to do that [TS]

01:34:42   through fear and intimidation that's a [TS]

01:34:44   worldview that's not a well i guess i [TS]

01:34:46   guess this i guess i guess i have this [TS]

01:34:48   job now and I've but I don't wanna move [TS]

01:34:50   out of this my factory town so I'm gonna [TS]

01:34:52   have to be the guy who fires people [TS]

01:34:54   no no that's not a worldview can you [TS]

01:34:56   imagine a scene in the original trilogy [TS]

01:34:57   where the real Darth Vader is told by [TS]

01:35:00   the Emperor hey go kill some young and [TS]

01:35:02   he says sure why not [TS]

01:35:04   and immediately goes and doesn't sure my [TS]

01:35:06   master [TS]

01:35:07   alright we're about halfway through this [TS]

01:35:09   one so come back for our next episode [TS]

01:35:11   when we will finish at last [TS]

01:35:14   our journey through the prequels thanks [TS]

01:35:16   for listening to the uncomfortable we [TS]

01:35:17   will see you next time [TS]
