225: A Conversation with Siri

00:00:00   [Applause] [TS]

00:00:02   [Music] [TS]

00:00:05   hey everybody hello this is wild a [TS]

00:00:10   little bit but this is a lot of people [TS]

00:00:13   but that's cool [TS]

00:00:14   so thanks everyone for coming this is [TS]

00:00:16   super awesome and thank you again to the [TS]

00:00:18   allcomp people for making this all [TS]

00:00:20   happen this is really really great and [TS]

00:00:22   we don't really have an agenda here [TS]

00:00:24   because this is the accidentals have [TS]

00:00:25   podcast so I think you had something you [TS]

00:00:28   wanted to discuss with the group I [TS]

00:00:29   decide format no it's like doors how [TS]

00:00:34   many people in this room regularly [TS]

00:00:36   listen to the live stream that's yeah [TS]

00:00:39   well anyway if you listen to the live [TS]

00:00:40   stream and for everyone else you listen [TS]

00:00:42   to the download of podcast it's edited [TS]

00:00:43   and during the live stream we just do a [TS]

00:00:45   bunch of stuff and then Marco turns it [TS]

00:00:46   into a show and so we're gonna do a [TS]

00:00:48   bunch of stuff here including I'm voting [TS]

00:00:51   listen to Marco do an edit reads live [TS]

00:00:52   which is always fun but I have a format [TS]

00:00:55   question for all three of us which I [TS]

00:00:56   didn't mention before but like at some [TS]

00:00:58   point during this show during this [TS]

00:01:00   recording Marco is gonna hit a button [TS]

00:01:01   that's gonna play our theme song what [TS]

00:01:04   happens after that so I was like this [TS]

00:01:08   has been like I've been kind of [TS]

00:01:10   postponing like thinking about this Mike [TS]

00:01:12   had a good idea of why don't we have the [TS]

00:01:14   audience sing the theme song along [TS]

00:01:19   this is exactly the kind of thing that [TS]

00:01:21   would be totally way too mortifying for [TS]

00:01:24   the three of us to do but there's a [TS]

00:01:27   whole room of people here who might feel [TS]

00:01:29   differently so I think that's how we [TS]

00:01:31   should solve all right but after the [TS]

00:01:32   song and then what happens we talk about [TS]

00:01:35   cars and we keep talking right but today [TS]

00:01:36   today do they file out while we talk [TS]

00:01:38   about cars hi everybody [TS]

00:01:41   we'll figure it out when we get there [TS]

00:01:42   that's that's the other question I'm [TS]

00:01:44   afraid to ask that's what I'm going to [TS]

00:01:45   now how many people know what happens on [TS]

00:01:48   the podcast [TS]

00:01:49   after the themes that's most anybody not [TS]

00:01:53   raising their hand people don't know [TS]

00:01:54   what happens all right I gotta have that [TS]

00:01:59   for reuse I just thought I'm getting at [TS]

00:02:01   is I don't know how we're gonna end this [TS]

00:02:02   podcast like literally I don't know how [TS]

00:02:04   we're gonna end it because we just kind [TS]

00:02:05   of tail off and the actual regarding [TS]

00:02:07   anyway well this is all pre-show what [TS]

00:02:08   you're hearing now this is called [TS]

00:02:09   pre-show and this is the stuff that we [TS]

00:02:11   do while we're trying to figure out what [TS]

00:02:13   I'm gonna record anyway I think I got [TS]

00:02:14   that amazes me how many more pre-show [TS]

00:02:15   stuff let's get on with the show [TS]

00:02:17   [Music] [TS]

00:02:20   [Applause] [TS]

00:02:21   you know for for an accidental tech [TS]

00:02:24   podcast we don't mess around around [TS]

00:02:26   these parts so I spent a lot of money [TS]

00:02:28   today I just thought I'd let everyone [TS]

00:02:30   starting with that you're already off [TS]

00:02:32   track that's all alone this is how it [TS]

00:02:34   works this is what we do John is all [TS]

00:02:37   right go ahead you can see you can have [TS]

00:02:38   your moment yeah I bought I bought a [TS]

00:02:41   MacBook adorable and I'm really excited [TS]

00:02:42   about that [TS]

00:02:43   so finally the MacBook adorable has been [TS]

00:02:45   updated I am very stoked and and I'm [TS]

00:02:48   really excited for to arrive and like [TS]

00:02:50   three freakin weeks because I went all [TS]

00:02:51   in and got the super fancy one [TS]

00:02:53   humblebrag not so humble brag whatever [TS]

00:02:55   and I'm really excited that that [TS]

00:02:57   happened and that's really all I care [TS]

00:02:58   about and oh yeah iPad stuff happened [TS]

00:03:00   and we can I guess we're done I love [TS]

00:03:02   that you you are the old like it's like [TS]

00:03:04   you ever see the pictures of the [TS]

00:03:05   highways when a place is being evacuated [TS]

00:03:07   for a hurricane and you see like there's [TS]

00:03:09   like all the people going one direction [TS]

00:03:11   and there's one car going the other way [TS]

00:03:15   like this is the entire rest of universe [TS]

00:03:18   right now I was like oh my god I've had [TS]

00:03:20   productivity this is the future they [TS]

00:03:22   basically made it the Mack asterisk [TS]

00:03:24   asterisk so we're going there and you're [TS]

00:03:27   like yeah you know what this is the [TS]

00:03:28   perfect time to stop using my iPad I [TS]

00:03:30   know this is great finally we're at [TS]

00:03:33   Lawrence Federico I don't know where he [TS]

00:03:35   is but I'm so sorry buddy all right I [TS]

00:03:37   think hey I don't think this is going to [TS]

00:03:38   put a damper on his day [TS]

00:03:39   no no you're right I don't think that's [TS]

00:03:41   possible all right so we got to get the [TS]

00:03:42   show on the road I should stop [TS]

00:03:43   distracting everyone so so today is the [TS]

00:03:46   first day of wEDC the keynote was just a [TS]

00:03:49   few hours ago [TS]

00:03:50   I don't know when Marco will get the [TS]

00:03:51   chance to release this as a proper [TS]

00:03:53   version of the app or a proper version [TS]

00:03:54   of the show tonight I'm dedicated oh [TS]

00:03:56   that's intense well I'm not staying up [TS]

00:03:58   that late but I don't ever get involved [TS]

00:03:59   with that anyway because I'm a big diva [TS]

00:04:01   anyhow the the guinot was today the Kino [TS]

00:04:05   was today and it was quick like they set [TS]

00:04:09   a really high bar for us getting through [TS]

00:04:12   this show quickly which is something [TS]

00:04:14   that the three of us are entirely [TS]

00:04:15   incapable of doing now so this is going [TS]

00:04:17   to be a little bit interesting well this [TS]

00:04:19   is going to be like a John Godfather [TS]

00:04:22   situation where like the commentary it's [TS]

00:04:24   probably gonna bear was Goodfellas [TS]

00:04:25   Godfather [TS]

00:04:30   of course yeah yeah but this is this [TS]

00:04:33   keynote was like a speedrun like at [TS]

00:04:34   first Kevin Lynch was up there and he [TS]

00:04:35   was he was going fast I thought maybe [TS]

00:04:37   because he was nervous but everybody [TS]

00:04:38   went really fast because they had so [TS]

00:04:40   much stuff and we're I guess we're gonna [TS]

00:04:42   go through it in keynote order which [TS]

00:04:43   means like the exciting things are at [TS]

00:04:44   the end because they save them to the [TS]

00:04:46   end so we have a bunch of on exciting [TS]

00:04:48   things in the beginning so TV OS so I [TS]

00:04:53   have a question was the OS or any part [TS]

00:04:56   of the OS actually mentioned or actually [TS]

00:04:59   changed because a content deal is not [TS]

00:05:01   the OS as far as I can tell the OS ng [TS]

00:05:05   usually watch State of the Union and [TS]

00:05:06   state again they showed one slide that [TS]

00:05:08   showed that they had some new things for [TS]

00:05:09   helping I don't know we had a bunch of [TS]

00:05:11   icons that maybe think they added some [TS]

00:05:12   more navigation stuff but anyway nothing [TS]

00:05:14   new in TV that we care about right the [TS]

00:05:16   funny thing is back six months ago [TS]

00:05:18   before I knew that the Grand Tour was a [TS]

00:05:20   pile of garbage I would have been super [TS]

00:05:22   amped to have Amazon Prime video on the [TS]

00:05:24   Apple TV and as it turns his oh man [TS]

00:05:26   wanna castle this good shows an Amazon [TS]

00:05:28   yeah well either way all I cared about [TS]

00:05:29   was the Grand Tour and now it's just a [TS]

00:05:32   disaster so I mean I'm excited I guess [TS]

00:05:35   this is perhaps the dam breaking which [TS]

00:05:37   is really exciting but I don't know I TB [TS]

00:05:39   OS man so let's move on [TS]

00:05:41   watch OS what's a nice right and there [TS]

00:05:43   wasn't that much more there there was a [TS]

00:05:45   little bit of new stuff and watch OS I [TS]

00:05:47   think it's interesting you know like I [TS]

00:05:48   was kind of predicting that this would [TS]

00:05:49   be like a kind of a quiet year for those [TS]

00:05:50   two and then mostly panda most of other [TS]

00:05:53   predictions were horrendously wrong but [TS]

00:05:54   this one I think I actually got Siri [TS]

00:05:56   everywhere I thought you were on the [TS]

00:05:57   right track cuz they're like oh the Siri [TS]

00:05:58   watchface we really are gonna see Syria [TS]

00:06:00   everywhere so the watch family okay the [TS]

00:06:03   watch is computer it like you can make [TS]

00:06:06   it be anything you can make it show [TS]

00:06:08   anything you can give it the [TS]

00:06:09   intelligence to say I don't always want [TS]

00:06:11   to have set at the bottom if I [TS]

00:06:13   occasionally want a timer down there but [TS]

00:06:15   when a timer is running I want it to be [TS]

00:06:17   on screen and so they have this [TS]

00:06:19   potential since day one of the watch to [TS]

00:06:21   be like we can we can make it smart it's [TS]

00:06:23   a Smart Watch so we can only show stuff [TS]

00:06:25   that you need to care about at that [TS]

00:06:26   moment but it's mostly been unreal eyes [TS]

00:06:27   on the watch faces they've been very [TS]

00:06:29   pretty much static like you could make [TS]

00:06:30   multiple ones now you know with three [TS]

00:06:31   but but the the complications you would [TS]

00:06:35   set up would be pretty much fixed and it [TS]

00:06:37   wasn't actually being very smart about [TS]

00:06:39   that so now they make a face where they [TS]

00:06:41   actually make something smart but it's [TS]

00:06:43   only on that face like you can't just [TS]

00:06:46   put a like smart complication as like [TS]

00:06:49   the big bottom one in like you know some [TS]

00:06:51   of the other phases I like that like why [TS]

00:06:52   it's a good step to get smarter but why [TS]

00:06:55   is it only on that one kind of [TS]

00:06:57   interesting Lee design phase yeah I [TS]

00:06:59   thought when they were showing that [TS]

00:07:00   segment it's like oh you're gonna be [TS]

00:07:01   able to like swipe your complications or [TS]

00:07:03   make like a make your own smart face [TS]

00:07:04   with different times a day but no you're [TS]

00:07:06   right it is all one face and all see [TS]

00:07:08   refocus that doesn't even look like a [TS]

00:07:09   watch and I don't know I mean I maybe [TS]

00:07:11   it's just a start to this I for a brief [TS]

00:07:13   moment I thought they're gonna say [TS]

00:07:14   they're probably watch faces yes sir bye [TS]

00:07:16   I thought of it for like eight seconds [TS]

00:07:18   there was a little glimmer of hope at [TS]

00:07:19   the beginning there yeah yeah I thought [TS]

00:07:20   your worlds were gonna collide Marco [TS]

00:07:22   where you have watches and you could [TS]

00:07:25   make your own face and you can make it [TS]

00:07:26   as fancy as you wanted you know because [TS]

00:07:28   your watch is not very smart I don't [TS]

00:07:29   know if for those who aren't here he's [TS]

00:07:31   wearing a proper mechanical watch so [TS]

00:07:33   yours is not a very intelligent it's a [TS]

00:07:35   feature watch it's a face yeah but it's [TS]

00:07:40   you know I I do want the watch to take [TS]

00:07:42   advantage of the fact that it's a [TS]

00:07:43   computer and and they clearly they now [TS]

00:07:46   are considering things like the [TS]

00:07:48   intelligence of the face by making this [TS]

00:07:49   eerie face it's more dynamic with what [TS]

00:07:51   it's showing you but they didn't take it [TS]

00:07:52   far enough so maybe in the future they [TS]

00:07:54   will I hope they do it did a lot of [TS]

00:07:55   workout stuff like because I'm thinking [TS]

00:07:57   that recognising the watch is mostly a [TS]

00:07:58   fitness related things like a lot of [TS]

00:08:00   rumors for workouts of you know getting [TS]

00:08:02   rid of frustrations in terms of like I [TS]

00:08:04   want to up on my own little the workout [TS]

00:08:05   but I want to pause the music and stuff [TS]

00:08:07   like that so those those seem like smart [TS]

00:08:09   focus features I got the lap swimming in [TS]

00:08:12   the pool you know that's that's pretty [TS]

00:08:13   esoteric and the grand scheme of things [TS]

00:08:15   I like the they had said that they were [TS]

00:08:18   gonna do like monthly based reminders or [TS]

00:08:19   something like that like hey if you are [TS]

00:08:22   near the end of the month and if you you [TS]

00:08:24   know move the next three you hit your [TS]

00:08:25   move goal the next three days you will [TS]

00:08:26   get your move goal for the whole month [TS]

00:08:27   and and I think that's kind of neat [TS]

00:08:29   because I pay some amount of attention [TS]

00:08:31   to my rings and you know not all of us [TS]

00:08:33   are just innately a blue ring stud like [TS]

00:08:35   me so so for you guys I'm sure that this [TS]

00:08:38   is pretty important for your blue rings [TS]

00:08:40   but but I thought that was really cool [TS]

00:08:42   and I think that a lot of these things [TS]

00:08:43   were typical evolutionary improvements [TS]

00:08:46   but as always with Apple mostly with [TS]

00:08:49   Apple they were not revolutionary [TS]

00:08:51   watch me look good and it was it was [TS]

00:08:52   early on Makino so they didn't talk [TS]

00:08:54   about all of the things that annoy like [TS]

00:08:56   if you if you wipe your watcher on [TS]

00:08:57   parrot you lose all your data and [TS]

00:08:58   sometimes you stand every hour during a [TS]

00:09:01   day but it doesn't give you your stand [TS]

00:09:02   ring because it doesn't like you like I [TS]

00:09:04   was bought a mulligan hmm I'm Mulligan a [TS]

00:09:06   feature where it would be like oh come [TS]

00:09:08   on I get one Mulligan per day and I [TS]

00:09:10   could say I totally stood that hour [TS]

00:09:11   anyway that's its next year for watch OS [TS]

00:09:13   5 I guess I also have a small concern [TS]

00:09:16   with the activity reminders that you [TS]

00:09:18   know right now when you get a watch on [TS]

00:09:19   default settings there is increasingly [TS]

00:09:22   more health and fitness type things that [TS]

00:09:24   it bugs you about every so often and I [TS]

00:09:27   wonder if they if they push that too far [TS]

00:09:29   like they had to breathe last year and [TS]

00:09:30   every if they push that too far people [TS]

00:09:32   will turn those off and I feel like [TS]

00:09:34   they're they're really on the edge of [TS]

00:09:36   that right now well it's to some degree [TS]

00:09:37   it's all about the way the person [TS]

00:09:40   perceives it right because to you it's [TS]

00:09:42   frustrating and annoying and especially [TS]

00:09:44   with breathe I agree with you but [TS]

00:09:45   otherwise I think that most of these [TS]

00:09:47   reminders are kind of nice and I'd like [TS]

00:09:48   to try to get reminded from something [TS]

00:09:51   external to myself hey get off your lazy [TS]

00:09:54   butt and move a little bit you've been [TS]

00:09:55   writing code for the last six hours [TS]

00:09:57   maybe you should go I don't know get a [TS]

00:09:59   drink of water or something and so for [TS]

00:10:01   me I actually think it's really cool [TS]

00:10:02   again with the breathe accepted because [TS]

00:10:03   I don't dig that at all I'm brave during [TS]

00:10:05   the keynote day did you stand at 50 [TS]

00:10:08   minutes exactly no not good not so much [TS]

00:10:11   all right so anything else on watch nope [TS]

00:11:28   for those that don't listen to the live [TS]

00:11:30   broadcast when Marco used to do the [TS]

00:11:32   reads during the live broadcast it was a [TS]

00:11:33   train wreck it was not a train wreck but [TS]

00:11:36   it wasn't bad [TS]

00:11:37   there were occasional derailments that [TS]

00:11:39   of a minor variety so are there really [TS]

00:11:42   minor train drill anyway so right [TS]

00:11:45   speaking of de railing trains hi Sierra [TS]

00:11:49   what is that I mean come on I mean we'll [TS]

00:11:53   get to this later but D what do you [TS]

00:11:55   think is the worst name hi Sierra [TS]

00:11:57   or home pod oh hi Sierra I think this I [TS]

00:12:00   think they're both fine I thought [TS]

00:12:01   they're gonna call it Sierra Nevada but [TS]

00:12:03   High Sierra is fine that's the thing I'm [TS]

00:12:05   okay see didn't know it was a thing [TS]

00:12:06   either but it is it is a place anything [TS]

00:12:08   and it wasn't there a high sierra like [TS]

00:12:10   volume format or like cd-rom standard [TS]

00:12:12   this is where you are the live chat room [TS]

00:12:14   and someone nobody know oh people some [TS]

00:12:18   kind of it is some kind of like cd-rom [TS]

00:12:19   like Mount Rainier kind of standard yeah [TS]

00:12:21   yeah hi Sierra so anyway I thought the [TS]

00:12:24   dad jokes leading up to it like I'm a [TS]

00:12:25   sucker for a good dad jokes I was fine [TS]

00:12:27   whatever but then I was expecting Craig [TS]

00:12:29   to be like oh haha no really no it's [TS]

00:12:30   called something else and that never [TS]

00:12:33   happened it took me about a minute [TS]

00:12:35   before I realized it wasn't a joke yeah [TS]

00:12:37   exactly I really thought that they that [TS]

00:12:39   Craig's me oh I'm so funny I'm such a [TS]

00:12:40   good guy and really it's called like you [TS]

00:12:43   know Yosemite plus-plus or whatever [TS]

00:12:45   anyways and and so as it turns out [TS]

00:12:47   they're they're rolling with the high [TS]

00:12:48   sierra and like um that's on the surface [TS]

00:12:51   i thought the the loose drug references [TS]

00:12:54   were kind of funny as like a gag but [TS]

00:12:57   when you're introducing the new version [TS]

00:12:59   of your OS with all of these drug [TS]

00:13:01   references and are like no really this [TS]

00:13:02   is it that just i don't know that's a [TS]

00:13:05   little weird to me but the OS looks good [TS]

00:13:08   so there's that yeah this kind of we can [TS]

00:13:11   playing about like they keep having to [TS]

00:13:12   revise mac OS every year and we've like [TS]

00:13:14   you should slow down the pace [TS]

00:13:15   slowing down the pace they'll have a [TS]

00:13:16   marketing release this year but the [TS]

00:13:17   number of features they're adding I mean [TS]

00:13:19   this could practically be a point [TS]

00:13:20   release you know like this not doesn't [TS]

00:13:22   look like there's a lot of new stuff in [TS]

00:13:24   it or the very least not a lot of stuff [TS]

00:13:25   through stuff they talked about [TS]

00:13:26   obviously a PFS which is [TS]

00:13:28   [Music] [TS]

00:13:34   the most important feature of the [TS]

00:13:35   operating system as we all know they [TS]

00:13:36   didn't go into detail on it but they did [TS]

00:13:38   do the one like demo that you can do [TS]

00:13:40   with it with the the file cloning which [TS]

00:13:42   is not really that impressive if you [TS]

00:13:43   understand what's going on under the [TS]

00:13:44   conference about whatever they know like [TS]

00:13:47   they didn't finish what they didn't show [TS]

00:13:50   basically was is a PFS faster than HFS+ [TS]

00:13:52   like if you do some big operation to a [TS]

00:13:55   lot of files either just using straight [TS]

00:13:57   POSIX API Zoar in your app is it [TS]

00:13:59   actually faster than a trust maybe it's [TS]

00:14:00   not or maybe it's a wash but if you're [TS]

00:14:02   taking advantage of features that only [TS]

00:14:04   API has have IPS has obviously it's [TS]

00:14:06   going to look good so that was fine you [TS]

00:14:08   didn't you didn't might not watch the [TS]

00:14:10   State of the Union Marko but because [TS]

00:14:11   you're busy getting ready over here but [TS]

00:14:12   there was a kind of a sad note about Mac [TS]

00:14:16   OS Sierra and 32-bit app support scary [TS]

00:14:19   sad note because I think of how many [TS]

00:14:20   32-bit apps I have my Mac I have a lot [TS]

00:14:23   and I bet everybody has a lot and unlike [TS]

00:14:25   iOS apps [TS]

00:14:25   I have little hope that if 32-bit [TS]

00:14:28   support goes away that all those app [TS]

00:14:30   developers they are even still [TS]

00:14:31   developing those apps in B will update [TS]

00:14:33   them all to 64-bit version so they said [TS]

00:14:35   so 32-bit app support is not going away [TS]

00:14:37   in high sierra but in the one after that [TS]

00:14:40   probably we're gonna yell at you if you [TS]

00:14:43   try to launch it like we're wishy-washy [TS]

00:14:44   about it but bottom line is 32-bit apps [TS]

00:14:47   are not long for this world in Mac OS in [TS]

00:14:48   the next year or two but hold on that [TS]

00:14:50   was that just the App Store because I [TS]

00:14:51   don't remember that's the that's the OS [TS]

00:14:54   my impression is that that's the OS we [TS]

00:14:55   just came from the State of the Union so [TS]

00:14:56   we didn't have time we'll leave on the [TS]

00:14:58   audience are nodding that means them [TS]

00:14:59   right there and their wording was like [TS]

00:15:01   it this will be the last release we're [TS]

00:15:03   like you can do it like without big [TS]

00:15:04   problems right so maybe they'll do some [TS]

00:15:06   kind of like virtualization layer thing [TS]

00:15:08   or like an emulation like Rosetta like [TS]

00:15:09   later on down below to say you know this [TS]

00:15:12   app may make your Mac slower like they [TS]

00:15:14   do in iOS you know when you're a 32-bit [TS]

00:15:15   eyes engages in like all 32-bit [TS]

00:15:17   libraries to actually run the ad oh yeah [TS]

00:15:19   I'm guessing they'll have some kind of [TS]

00:15:21   like patchwork solution because it [TS]

00:15:23   wouldn't be that hard for them to do it [TS]

00:15:25   like they already have all the libraries [TS]

00:15:27   enough so they could do like a VM kind [TS]

00:15:28   of like emulation mode for those apps [TS]

00:15:30   and just yell at you with a dialog boxes [TS]

00:15:32   telling you that your computer's not [TS]

00:15:33   performing very well you know we skip [TS]

00:15:34   Safari and I don't mean I don't think [TS]

00:15:36   there's a lot to say about it but I'm [TS]

00:15:37   super excited about the changes they've [TS]

00:15:38   made I mean autoplay video blocking that [TS]

00:15:41   awesome how long do you think I'll take [TS]

00:15:43   be able to defeat that well can we at [TS]

00:15:44   least be positive firm alright fine come [TS]

00:15:47   on man but no that's exciting I figured [TS]

00:15:49   what else was in Safari but but look [TS]

00:15:51   it's faster it's really fast it's always [TS]

00:15:53   fast every Lea that did the the [TS]

00:15:54   intelligent tracking prevention which [TS]

00:15:56   sounds like some kind of algorithm to [TS]

00:15:57   detect whether to block third party [TS]

00:15:59   cookies on ads which is pretty cool by [TS]

00:16:00   default that's that's nice like it's [TS]

00:16:02   it's kind of like a half ad blocker step [TS]

00:16:04   maybe they would also block things or [TS]

00:16:07   the more invisible kind of trackers that [TS]

00:16:08   you don't necessarily you know see you [TS]

00:16:10   know there's kind of the massive three [TS]

00:16:12   megabytes of includes that most of these [TS]

00:16:14   websites have now so maybe this is kind [TS]

00:16:16   of them building in an ad blocker by [TS]

00:16:18   default like as a baby step and they [TS]

00:16:20   probably would never go out and say [TS]

00:16:22   we're blocking all your ads so the [TS]

00:16:23   people might sue them but this is [TS]

00:16:24   something like well you are browser just [TS]

00:16:25   decides not to load your JavaScript [TS]

00:16:27   sometimes like they might be loading [TS]

00:16:28   them I think they're just trying to make [TS]

00:16:29   you less trackable I guess I'm about to [TS]

00:16:31   go to the sessions about this week [TS]

00:16:32   they're randomizing identifiable [TS]

00:16:33   information I don't think they're [TS]

00:16:34   randomizing your user agent string but [TS]

00:16:36   they could be randomizing some stuff [TS]

00:16:37   that people use to pin you down like [TS]

00:16:39   exposing the whatever API is they use to [TS]

00:16:41   get like I don't they can get your [TS]

00:16:43   battery level like they do on the phone [TS]

00:16:44   or whatever but like making you appear [TS]

00:16:46   to be a different phone when you are so [TS]

00:16:48   they're not blocking the ads they [TS]

00:16:49   emphasize that but they don't want [TS]

00:16:50   people to get mad at them but they're [TS]

00:16:52   just making you less trackable which is [TS]

00:16:54   just good I don't know if it's on iOS [TS]

00:16:56   too but I would assume so the other [TS]

00:16:57   thing only other thing I want to talk [TS]

00:16:58   about in Mac OS I don't want to talk [TS]

00:17:00   about the photo stuff because I don't [TS]

00:17:01   think there was that much there we need [TS]

00:17:02   to move on maybe we'll circle back to it [TS]

00:17:03   but the part where they talk about [TS]

00:17:05   graphics and like oh this is it they're [TS]

00:17:06   going to upgrade the OpenGL support and [TS]

00:17:08   they're gonna have a Vulcan is gonna be [TS]

00:17:09   awesome and you know NVIDIA GPUs are [TS]

00:17:11   going to be in the new Mac Pro next year [TS]

00:17:13   and but no no so they're they're [TS]

00:17:15   doubling down on a doubling down on [TS]

00:17:16   metal which is good it's their thing [TS]

00:17:18   it's fine but I think by them talking so [TS]

00:17:21   heavily about metal is kind of them [TS]

00:17:22   saying we're never gonna do Vulcan like [TS]

00:17:25   we're we're just doing metal and that's [TS]

00:17:28   our thing and if you don't because they [TS]

00:17:29   got they got bench and support they got [TS]

00:17:31   unity and unreal and like so they don't [TS]

00:17:33   I think they're not hurting from the [TS]

00:17:35   lack of open sore but just fine I [TS]

00:17:36   suppose [TS]

00:17:37   I'll take what I can get but that was [TS]

00:17:39   one fake out in the Mac OS section for [TS]

00:17:41   me yeah I will briefly say though [TS]

00:17:43   because there wasn't that much to talk [TS]

00:17:44   about with photos this is pretty fast [TS]

00:17:46   they added syncing of the metadata stuff [TS]

00:17:48   that's awesome that's what is awesome [TS]

00:17:50   huge glaring hole from last year as you [TS]

00:17:52   mentioned last week that was the one big [TS]

00:17:54   hole in the feature set that they needed [TS]

00:17:57   to plug so that way our devices aren't [TS]

00:17:59   hot for like the first two days after we [TS]

00:18:01   got a new one or restore it like that's [TS]

00:18:03   a huge thing that was my last night now [TS]

00:18:05   he's not when it downloads I'm gonna [TS]

00:18:06   tell it sinks the the data [TS]

00:18:08   so yeah syncing is good and you won't [TS]

00:18:10   have to recompute it but you will have [TS]

00:18:11   to pull it down [TS]

00:18:12   hopefully the progress bar we're pulling [TS]

00:18:13   down will be better and related to that [TS]

00:18:15   and we don't have a separate section for [TS]

00:18:16   iCloud but it's worth talking about here [TS]

00:18:17   on one of the slides or the thing it [TS]

00:18:19   said like family storage plans for [TS]

00:18:21   iCloud storage yeah which is one tiny [TS]

00:18:23   step closer to family photo libraries [TS]

00:18:25   because if we have family storage like a [TS]

00:18:27   family plan on a cell phone thing we pay [TS]

00:18:29   for a certain amount for the whole [TS]

00:18:30   family and you share it in some way [TS]

00:18:31   that's a great place to put a family [TS]

00:18:33   photo library not this year [TS]

00:18:36   mail got some improvements that's pretty [TS]

00:18:38   good I actually think mail app is fine [TS]

00:18:41   don't throw tomato I these I mean it's [TS]

00:18:43   fine for me it works I'm not a super [TS]

00:18:45   productivity guru that needs whatever [TS]

00:18:47   the fancy mail app of the minute is like [TS]

00:18:49   like a lot of you guys probably are just [TS]

00:18:51   more than one mail app after your fancy [TS]

00:18:53   yeah that's true so yeah so oh just long [TS]

00:18:55   ago given up on ever be able to search [TS]

00:18:57   my mail on iOS [TS]

00:18:58   well I'm supposedly that's getting [TS]

00:18:59   better it's gonna take up a lot less [TS]

00:19:00   space etc etc not an iOS yeah well [TS]

00:19:02   that's true um and then there's this new [TS]

00:19:05   HEV C codec which is h.265 that's kind [TS]

00:19:09   of cool oh yeah it's nice that they're [TS]

00:19:10   trying to they're bringing support down [TS]

00:19:12   like hardware support to some things [TS]

00:19:14   some existing hardware but if not have [TS]

00:19:16   software support so that'll that'll [TS]

00:19:17   really help and then converting [TS]

00:19:19   everything internal like anything that [TS]

00:19:20   they make will use their you know that [TS]

00:19:22   the h.265 and their new image container [TS]

00:19:24   format everything that's all really [TS]

00:19:26   smart and will make everybody happy and [TS]

00:19:28   then the beginnings of your good day [TS]

00:19:31   they said that you can use external GPUs [TS]

00:19:34   so you can play games and do whatever [TS]

00:19:37   things you need this ridiculous GPU for [TS]

00:19:39   with an external GPU so that's exciting [TS]

00:19:41   right yeah like it was like I was like a [TS]

00:19:45   dev kids they were giving you that was a [TS]

00:19:46   huge surprise like that that the first [TS]

00:19:48   bit of new hardware Apple announced was [TS]

00:19:50   an external GPS so here's what I want to [TS]

00:19:52   see for them for a real commitment this [TS]

00:19:53   is like oh you know this will let you [TS]

00:19:55   use higher powered GPUs on your laptops [TS]

00:19:56   and turn it into kind of the [TS]

00:19:58   Pro that we're not yet introducing right [TS]

00:19:59   but are they going to ship a product I [TS]

00:20:01   want official Apple support the thing [TS]

00:20:03   that I can plug a GPU into I don't [TS]

00:20:04   purchase like oh it's a third party [TS]

00:20:05   opportunity here's a driver I hope that [TS]

00:20:07   company doesn't go out of business like [TS]

00:20:08   if they're really committed to it I want [TS]

00:20:10   to see an Apple branded in style box [TS]

00:20:12   that you put GPUs in the official [TS]

00:20:13   support this is just the beginning this [TS]

00:20:15   is a dev kit so we don't know we don't [TS]

00:20:17   know what their product story is there I [TS]

00:20:18   hope they have a product story and not [TS]

00:20:19   just a know you can come because they [TS]

00:20:21   couldn't even when they left it to third [TS]

00:20:22   parties that could even get monitors [TS]

00:20:23   right with the LG thing I don't want [TS]

00:20:25   them to leave external GPU to third [TS]

00:20:26   parties and just you know good luck that [TS]

00:20:29   seems like an orphan thing but yeah [TS]

00:20:31   that's you have the ability to do with [TS]

00:20:32   Thunderbolt people are already doing it [TS]

00:20:34   with hacks right this is not doing an [TS]

00:20:35   official Apple sport is is great and [TS]

00:20:37   step in the right direction [TS]

00:20:38   well then VR was was spoken about well [TS]

00:20:41   that's kind of cool and yes sir [TS]

00:20:44   knowledgeable mostly the headset they [TS]

00:20:46   have with a little Denson it was that [TS]

00:20:48   the the HTC vive yeah well I would they [TS]

00:20:51   didn't didn't announce the vive can make [TS]

00:20:53   fun of me for Mom and you save Eve its [TS]

00:20:55   announced on Bozell I don't know I don't [TS]

00:20:58   know I don't have one but that's what [TS]

00:20:59   the picture they use for the graphics [TS]

00:21:01   with the logos removed they didn't [TS]

00:21:02   announce like oculus or HTC supporting [TS]

00:21:04   Apple stuff they did announce like [TS]

00:21:06   entrance support and steam VR support [TS]

00:21:07   but they didn't have like a hardware VR [TS]

00:21:10   story it's good they have a VR story now [TS]

00:21:13   instead of like no VR is just not a [TS]

00:21:14   thing but it's not as if they came out [TS]

00:21:16   and said all the major VR hardware and [TS]

00:21:18   software vendors are supporting us in VR [TS]

00:21:19   as the future they seem much more [TS]

00:21:21   heavily into AR but still it is it is a [TS]

00:21:23   big step for them to acknowledge that VR [TS]

00:21:25   is a thing and to acknowledge that maybe [TS]

00:21:28   people who create content in the world [TS]

00:21:31   might want to create content for VR [TS]

00:21:32   sometime so maybe we should ship some [TS]

00:21:34   computers with some big GPUs in them [TS]

00:21:36   yeah or at least better G because I [TS]

00:21:38   don't know enough about the the Radeon [TS]

00:21:40   line to know if these are like the super [TS]

00:21:41   top-end being on the current [TS]

00:21:43   architecture is a nice change right and [TS]

00:21:47   yeah yeah who'da thunk it you'll see [TS]

00:21:50   Helena keeps up yeah they're not I'm not [TS]

00:21:52   gonna update the back again for another [TS]

00:21:54   two years it'll be fine [TS]

00:21:55   yeah all right so then we started [TS]

00:21:57   talking about hardware but yeah there's [TS]

00:21:58   something else that's awesome that we [TS]

00:22:00   should talk about oh yeah okay I sponsor [TS]

00:23:19   that's audible.com slash ATP thank you [TS]

00:23:23   very much to audible for sponsoring our [TS]

00:23:24   show two / three nicely done [TS]

00:23:30   so we we got some IMAX that's exciting [TS]

00:23:33   they've got fancy new displays which is [TS]

00:23:36   cool they're on kb lake gentlemen I feel [TS]

00:23:40   like there should be some sort of [TS]

00:23:41   excitement about this I'm surprised the [TS]

00:23:43   room isn't a rug this is not a demand [TS]

00:23:45   I'm surprised the room isn't erupting in [TS]

00:23:47   thunderous applause [TS]

00:23:49   it really wasn't it - man okay [TS]

00:23:50   I'm not that desperate good god guys I [TS]

00:23:52   feel like isn't that much better I mean [TS]

00:23:54   it's nice but it's but it's it's more [TS]

00:23:56   modern yeah it's not today so leaving [TS]

00:23:59   aside the real star of the show as far [TS]

00:24:01   as the three of us are concerned [TS]

00:24:02   I thought the IMAX look good I mean it's [TS]

00:24:04   an improvement the displays are better [TS]

00:24:05   they're faster more RAM all these good [TS]

00:24:08   things I like the fact that they kept [TS]

00:24:10   the USBA ports on the back because this [TS]

00:24:11   is like finally you have us be seeing [TS]

00:24:13   Thunderbolt summit but they didn't [TS]

00:24:14   remove all the a ports because all that [TS]

00:24:15   would mean is even more dongles hanging [TS]

00:24:17   out the back of your IMAX at places [TS]

00:24:19   where you can't reach them and that like [TS]

00:24:20   the weight of the dongle makes them bend [TS]

00:24:21   down and everything so I I'm glad that [TS]

00:24:23   they did that and they kept the SD card [TS]

00:24:25   slot they were like no the future is not [TS]

00:24:27   SD cards we got to remove it you know [TS]

00:24:28   they didn't add anything but they didn't [TS]

00:24:30   take away anything either so this is a [TS]

00:24:31   very very pragmatic iMac update and at [TS]

00:24:34   least I'm differentiating the line in a [TS]

00:24:35   way that they don't with the portables [TS]

00:24:37   that like this the larger and bigger and [TS]

00:24:40   more complicated the computer the more [TS]

00:24:42   you care about legacy ports unless we're [TS]

00:24:43   going to try to like make it even [TS]

00:24:45   thinner and remove all the ports and [TS]

00:24:47   just tell you you shouldn't stick SD [TS]

00:24:48   cards if you want an SD card reader just [TS]

00:24:49   by a USB C hub and then put the USBC [TS]

00:24:52   cable into then put a card reader into [TS]

00:24:54   that with your adapter and your dongle [TS]

00:24:55   then it's like just give me the slot to [TS]

00:24:56   put in the back so I I like those IMAX [TS]

00:24:58   they look pretty good the screen stuff [TS]

00:25:00   would did they say the standard IMAX [TS]

00:25:02   have better brightness and everything - [TS]

00:25:03   yeah and 10-bit color tube not is tenth [TS]

00:25:05   they said temp it did the ring which I [TS]

00:25:06   don't yeah right it makes me think that [TS]

00:25:08   the screen is still not capable of abut [TS]

00:25:10   that they're gonna be there to get the [TS]

00:25:11   different color things I don't know what [TS]

00:25:12   that means well maybe yeah that's worth [TS]

00:25:14   clarifying you're looking to end it [TS]

00:25:15   didn't say anything about image [TS]

00:25:16   retention Marcus I don't know whoops [TS]

00:25:20   yeah and then there still some some [TS]

00:25:23   spinning platter bottles some tea well [TS]

00:25:25   yeah but they're all fusion like they [TS]

00:25:27   did they no they're not the base model [TS]

00:25:29   21 inch is still a 5400 rpm it really [TS]

00:25:33   did you confirm is they made a big point [TS]

00:25:35   of it that the fusion was standard on [TS]

00:25:36   all models they were very careful to say [TS]

00:25:38   that all 27 is configure oh let's have [TS]

00:25:41   you know I don't think they should have [TS]

00:25:42   fusion drives and they should be SSD [TS]

00:25:43   everywhere I explained but anybody's [TS]

00:25:45   mind why me an option if you want like a [TS]

00:25:47   ton of space but it should not like [TS]

00:25:49   that's a crutch like their they should [TS]

00:25:51   not be using that and we don't know I [TS]

00:25:52   don't know yet a fusion drives or [TS]

00:25:54   supporter with a BFS like I don't know [TS]

00:25:55   how that works [TS]

00:25:56   that's like both for conversion which [TS]

00:25:59   wasn't mentioned at all and also if you [TS]

00:26:01   by one of these things like a year from [TS]

00:26:02   now and it comes to the fusion drive is [TS]

00:26:04   the spinning disk part of it a PFS does [TS]

00:26:06   it make a difference I don't know I'm [TS]

00:26:08   shocked that they did not take the ten [TS]

00:26:09   seconds in their committee and talk [TS]

00:26:11   about it to talk about file system [TS]

00:26:12   conversion and that's that's a scary and [TS]

00:26:16   important step that everybody has to go [TS]

00:26:17   through so I talked about oh my word [TS]

00:26:21   let me talk about the birds in position [TS]

00:26:22   the new iMacs that they bump the GPUs [TS]

00:26:24   they give better GPUs and all across the [TS]

00:26:27   line which is a lot of their GPU talking [TS]

00:26:29   their graphics talk is acknowledging a [TS]

00:26:31   weakness in their entire product line [TS]

00:26:32   that their GPUs are not great they're [TS]

00:26:35   kind of middle of the road and it hurts [TS]

00:26:37   them and so I don't know if you need [TS]

00:26:39   them for the VR stuff but it's just it's [TS]

00:26:41   just embarrassing when they're like [TS]

00:26:42   fancy games that everybody else is [TS]

00:26:43   playing that are available for the Mac [TS]

00:26:45   on Steam but people don't want to play [TS]

00:26:47   them or can't play them or the frame [TS]

00:26:48   rates are terrible it doesn't look good [TS]

00:26:50   so I'm glad they are making progress in [TS]

00:26:52   that area and I didn't look at the [TS]

00:26:54   pricing I think jacking up the prices [TS]

00:26:55   compared to the current models based on [TS]

00:26:57   having a better Jo I'd be enhancing yeah [TS]

00:27:00   I mean they have a place to jack up the [TS]

00:27:02   prices and that's oh sure it was this [TS]

00:27:04   was this where they did the demo of the [TS]

00:27:06   VR stuff with with Star Wars and ILM and [TS]

00:27:08   all that I believe so yeah because it [TS]

00:27:10   struck me as I was watching this like if [TS]

00:27:12   you think of everyone on stage they all [TS]

00:27:14   had like prompters and and had people [TS]

00:27:17   around them and you preserve ibly they [TS]

00:27:19   were able to see like kind of cues of [TS]

00:27:22   what they were supposed to talk about [TS]

00:27:23   next this this poor woman I don't [TS]

00:27:25   remember call her name I think I did [TS]

00:27:26   write it down somewhere of akkad knows [TS]

00:27:27   where it was anyway she had to have [TS]

00:27:29   goggles on and just do all of this from [TS]

00:27:31   memory I can barely remember my own name [TS]

00:27:33   half she ducked under growth fairies [TS]

00:27:36   lightsaber that wasn't there it was that [TS]

00:27:37   was a that was a hell of a demo it was [TS]

00:27:39   it was intense like I'm serious that was [TS]

00:27:42   super impressive because everyone else [TS]

00:27:43   at least can look at a monitor remind [TS]

00:27:45   themselves what they're supposed to he [TS]

00:27:46   goes oh no it's ILM they're good at this [TS]

00:27:47   island doesn't do live shows in front of [TS]

00:27:49   an audience they hey they do [TS]

00:27:50   post-production they have all the time [TS]

00:27:52   in the world so they they must have [TS]

00:27:53   burst that like crazy and that was that [TS]

00:27:54   was impressed obviously wasn't a game [TS]

00:27:55   that you can play but it was a very cool [TS]

00:27:57   demo that was super cool so was I Mac [TS]

00:28:00   Pro next well next day they did a quick [TS]

00:28:02   MacBooks update but butch we pretty much [TS]

00:28:05   already covered I mean you're welcome [TS]

00:28:06   did see this is what's nice about the [TS]

00:28:08   MacBook update to cable a kit like first [TS]

00:28:10   of all they did all of them but [TS]

00:28:11   you know but actually even the MacBook [TS]

00:28:12   Air yeah with a megahertz bumpit same [TS]

00:28:16   screen the same everything we increase [TS]

00:28:18   the clock speed yeah but if it went to [TS]

00:28:20   sky like that's gonna be a big battery [TS]

00:28:21   boost in the MacBook Air but it what's [TS]

00:28:23   nice about the knife about the MacBook [TS]

00:28:25   update is that they did it you know [TS]

00:28:27   cabling came out not that long ago you [TS]

00:28:29   know they're shipping these products on [TS]

00:28:31   time basically and they're doing it all [TS]

00:28:33   and it's not that big of a deal they [TS]

00:28:35   didn't they didn't like hold everything [TS]

00:28:36   back until this winter when the I Mac [TS]

00:28:38   Pro launches or whatever they're not [TS]

00:28:39   like artificially delaying things I [TS]

00:28:41   didn't hold it back until I could get 32 [TS]

00:28:43   gigs of RAM in either they just said [TS]

00:28:44   like we're gonna write and do the [TS]

00:28:45   updates we can do now and everyone [TS]

00:28:47   that's right like that like it's really [TS]

00:28:49   nice that we're that this is the first [TS]

00:28:52   step in a potential return to regular [TS]

00:28:55   updates on a healthy schedule for the [TS]

00:28:57   entire Mac lineup this is step one of [TS]

00:28:59   that we'll see if they can maintain that [TS]

00:29:01   over time that would be nice I hope they [TS]

00:29:02   do but this is the distant indication [TS]

00:29:04   that they're at least on that path right [TS]

00:29:06   now and that I'm really glad to see ya [TS]

00:29:08   was it gray and Mike that we're talking [TS]

00:29:10   about you know I want to see like a line [TS]

00:29:13   here yeah I don't want to see just one [TS]

00:29:14   point where oh yeah they updated great [TS]

00:29:16   think that was me but it's not it was [TS]

00:29:18   also you I'm the way excuse me everyone [TS]

00:29:23   my mistake but but the point is still [TS]

00:29:25   fair right regardless of who made it the [TS]

00:29:27   point is that you can start to draw a [TS]

00:29:28   line here and say okay updates are [TS]

00:29:30   happening with some amount of regularity [TS]

00:29:33   which is a great sign now we'll see if [TS]

00:29:36   that stays true for iPad stuff which [TS]

00:29:38   we'll get to in a minute but I mean this [TS]

00:29:39   is still a step in the pot in the right [TS]

00:29:41   direction which is good well it kind of [TS]

00:29:42   makes me dread when they change the [TS]

00:29:44   cases again because maybe we can start [TS]

00:29:45   attributing the the delay to that like [TS]

00:29:47   oh they update them fine when it's all [TS]

00:29:49   in the same case but then there's like [TS]

00:29:50   this big update where they're like touch [TS]

00:29:52   bar and the new form factors in the [TS]

00:29:54   MacBook one I hope the next time they [TS]

00:29:56   change the form factors there isn't a [TS]

00:29:57   weird gap again yeah well next speaking [TS]

00:30:02   of weird gaps they kind of addressed the [TS]

00:30:04   Mac Pro need temporarily with the iMac [TS]

00:30:07   pro which we all knew was a thing that [TS]

00:30:09   was coming - ever since that briefing [TS]

00:30:10   they had but for me it was always a big [TS]

00:30:13   question mark of like what will the iMac [TS]

00:30:15   pro have that the Mac Pro doesn't and [TS]

00:30:18   and what would the iMac Pro have that [TS]

00:30:19   the regular iMac doesn't like where they [TS]

00:30:21   feel this you know how do they balance [TS]

00:30:23   that and how [TS]

00:30:24   they maintain a reason for those other [TS]

00:30:26   two ends of the scale to exist and I [TS]

00:30:29   still have just as many questions now [TS]

00:30:31   because what they ended up he's gone we [TS]

00:30:33   saw it in the hands-on area [TS]

00:30:34   it's space gray oh my god can we just [TS]

00:30:36   talk about how hot that thing looks that [TS]

00:30:38   thing looks amaze it was dark in the [TS]

00:30:40   room I I wish it wish it was matte black [TS]

00:30:42   but I guess they gotta save the matte [TS]

00:30:43   black for the pro ID by the way I'm the [TS]

00:30:45   iMac Pro let's think of an alternate [TS]

00:30:46   universe an alternate universe exists [TS]

00:30:48   where the iMac pro was there going to be [TS]

00:30:51   their story for pro Mac hardware like [TS]

00:30:53   that's when this project was conceived [TS]

00:30:55   the iMac Pro was conceived there was no [TS]

00:30:57   plan for the Mac Pro that they've now [TS]

00:30:59   promised us right so think about that [TS]

00:31:02   think about imagine a world where Apple [TS]

00:31:04   announces this and they never had the [TS]

00:31:06   Mac Roundtable and we all look at this [TS]

00:31:07   and it's cool and everything but I think [TS]

00:31:08   people would still be super angry [TS]

00:31:10   because this is not oh I know two people [TS]

00:31:12   though like you believe them the people [TS]

00:31:14   who want pro max I mean some people are [TS]

00:31:16   still saying this Pro Mac is not exactly [TS]

00:31:17   what they want but for a top-end iMac I [TS]

00:31:20   think it's awesome because now we know [TS]

00:31:21   the other one is coming so this doesn't [TS]

00:31:22   need to be all things to all people it [TS]

00:31:24   needs to be and and that's why it has [TS]

00:31:25   these these guts in them that are so [TS]

00:31:28   high-end like 18 core Xeon and 128 gigs [TS]

00:31:31   of GCC ramesses because this was that [TS]

00:31:33   going to be the Mac Pro story so your [TS]

00:31:36   questions I guess are probably like how [TS]

00:31:37   did they get all that stuff in there is [TS]

00:31:39   it gonna melt how loud is it gonna be as [TS]

00:31:40   are those these are questions yeah so my [TS]

00:31:43   biggest question like the answer like [TS]

00:31:45   one where they put it on the spectrum is [TS]

00:31:47   they put a Mac Pro in the on that case [TS]

00:31:49   like they put Xeon CPUs workstation [TS]

00:31:52   class graphics we think you know high [TS]

00:31:54   ram ceiling ECC Ram big a big throughput [TS]

00:31:57   it has dual Thunderbolt controllers so [TS]

00:31:59   it's like 10 city Ethernet although all [TS]

00:32:01   the highest of the high end features are [TS]

00:32:03   in there in this little skinny package [TS]

00:32:04   of the one by the way the one on the in [TS]

00:32:06   the hands-on area like it was it was a [TS]

00:32:08   prototype so I couldn't tell like what [TS]

00:32:10   the noise levels are gonna be but they [TS]

00:32:11   had the fans set to max just you know so [TS]

00:32:13   it's not it's not representative Harbor [TS]

00:32:15   but it was so loud in that room I [TS]

00:32:16   couldn't tell but definitely there was [TS]

00:32:18   more airflow coming to that thing that [TS]

00:32:19   you were to expect but otherwise it just [TS]

00:32:21   it just looks like an iMac it just looks [TS]

00:32:23   like an iMac it doesn't didn't look any [TS]

00:32:24   thicker to me no in fact it's the exact [TS]

00:32:26   same dimensions according to their [TS]

00:32:27   website it said without adding a [TS]

00:32:28   millimeter we had all this power because [TS]

00:32:30   yeah but it was not just like an iMac [TS]

00:32:32   did you see how good that thing looked [TS]

00:32:34   like I want [TS]

00:32:35   I don't just want the space great I do I [TS]

00:32:38   do I just really have the Magic Trackpad [TS]

00:32:39   - the Magic Trackpad also comes in space [TS]

00:32:41   grip and the mouse they all come down [TS]

00:32:43   space great and the keyboard is now [TS]

00:32:44   Wireless with a number pad a combination [TS]

00:32:47   that has never just did you had that's [TS]

00:32:48   super awesome and I asked I asked the [TS]

00:32:52   person that was doing like the kind of [TS]

00:32:53   demo ten seconds after I asked them [TS]

00:32:55   didn't I wasn't there I walked up right [TS]

00:32:57   after John and I was like so what [TS]

00:32:59   switches are these exactly and he said [TS]

00:33:00   it's exactly like the current magic [TS]

00:33:02   keyboard which we can all agree is the [TS]

00:33:04   best keyboard that has ever existed good [TS]

00:33:06   talk all right so no it really does all [TS]

00:33:09   kitties I looks great the the fan output [TS]

00:33:12   like I put my hand behind the exhaust [TS]

00:33:14   vent which is in the back [TS]

00:33:15   unlike the IMAX that we have today if I [TS]

00:33:17   recall correctly that was moving a lot [TS]

00:33:19   of air and admittedly like John said it [TS]

00:33:21   was loud in there admittedly we only had [TS]

00:33:23   but 30 seconds or whatever in front of [TS]

00:33:25   it but it did not sound terribly loud to [TS]

00:33:27   me at all [TS]

00:33:28   and it was moving a stunning amount of [TS]

00:33:30   air for what looked to be a little tiny [TS]

00:33:33   area that what that the vent was taking [TS]

00:33:36   it's gonna be heating up the foot [TS]

00:33:37   because like it's blowing back on the [TS]

00:33:39   little l-shaped foot thingy and so that [TS]

00:33:40   foot is gonna get hot and like the act [TS]

00:33:42   as a radiator and slowly warmth like if [TS]

00:33:43   you put a piece of chocolate on the top [TS]

00:33:45   part of that foot was going melt into a [TS]

00:33:47   puddle it's kind of interesting we were [TS]

00:33:49   not to touch it by the way although I [TS]

00:33:50   did immediately grab the mouse but I [TS]

00:33:52   basically on my hand slapped we aren't [TS]

00:33:54   allowed to touch it is just for them to [TS]

00:33:55   look at the only other thing that we [TS]

00:33:57   asked was relevant is it does have [TS]

00:33:59   socketed RAM that you could see in like [TS]

00:34:00   the diagram when they showed it in the [TS]

00:34:01   keynote but there is not user [TS]

00:34:03   upgradeable there is no door you are not [TS]

00:34:05   supposed to reach in there and so it's [TS]

00:34:06   not all soldered to the board but does [TS]

00:34:07   matter you still can't upgrade it so or [TS]

00:34:09   with as much RAM as your can afford [TS]

00:34:11   after you mortgage your house to buy one [TS]

00:34:13   of these things yeah so speaking of when [TS]

00:34:15   would it start at five grades starts [TS]

00:34:16   starts at five thousand which is not but [TS]

00:34:18   you know fad yeah like if you configure [TS]

00:34:20   a Mac Pro with eight cores and one [TS]

00:34:22   terabyte which is what that base to [TS]

00:34:23   figure Asian is and 32 gigs of ram [TS]

00:34:25   that's actually not that ridiculous plus [TS]

00:34:26   the screen yeah that's a good you get a [TS]

00:34:28   free screen with it which is nice yeah [TS]

00:34:29   like that's how I can do that like you [TS]

00:34:31   know right now today having not look too [TS]

00:34:33   far into it yet I consider that pretty [TS]

00:34:35   reasonable so is sitting here now we [TS]

00:34:38   where you guys I should say we cuz I [TS]

00:34:40   don't I'm not gonna get one of these [TS]

00:34:41   despite have we talked neither what it [TS]

00:34:43   is no but [TS]

00:34:45   I'm curious actually are you guys going [TS]

00:34:48   to get one of these because in a lot of [TS]

00:34:50   ways on the surface it will obviously [TS]

00:34:52   mark away but I still have to ask the [TS]

00:34:54   question I was gonna get two of them [TS]

00:34:55   let's be let's failure he's gonna get [TS]

00:34:57   two of these that's probably true [TS]

00:34:58   but you know it this does seem to solve [TS]

00:35:00   a lot of problems and so on the one side [TS]

00:35:01   I'm really excited about this for you [TS]

00:35:03   guys especially that it solves a lot of [TS]

00:35:05   problems and it seems like this is the [TS]

00:35:06   way of the future but at the same time [TS]

00:35:09   we had that roundtable where they said [TS]

00:35:11   no really the way the future is the new [TS]

00:35:13   Mac Pro that'll come sometime between [TS]

00:35:14   now and 2030 so this is the marshmallow [TS]

00:35:17   experiment what's the name of that one [TS]

00:35:18   whole thing yeah like you offer the kid [TS]

00:35:21   we can have one marshmallow now if you [TS]

00:35:22   wait 30 seconds to get of two [TS]

00:35:23   marshmallows the kids like one [TS]

00:35:24   marshmallow now so if you can wait until [TS]

00:35:27   next year or the year after or sometime [TS]

00:35:30   after that you can get a Mac Pro which [TS]

00:35:31   is going to be probably super awesome [TS]

00:35:33   just like this is because they're [TS]

00:35:34   clearly they're showing their their [TS]

00:35:36   willingness to put the best of the best [TS]

00:35:38   stuff inside a Mac they've done it here [TS]

00:35:40   as best they could in this little skinny [TS]

00:35:41   thing and in the Big Mac Pro it's gonna [TS]

00:35:42   be even you know so if you can wait for [TS]

00:35:44   that you will get it if you can't wait [TS]

00:35:46   you can plunk down your life savings on [TS]

00:35:48   this thing and so so is that what you're [TS]

00:35:50   gonna do are you gonna plunk down your [TS]

00:35:51   life savings on this now if my like I [TS]

00:35:54   would love to have one of these I would [TS]

00:35:56   love to replace my Mac with it it looks [TS]

00:35:57   like a great computer but I bet all of [TS]

00:36:00   the Mac Pro even more so I just keep [TS]

00:36:05   using my I want to go for it I'm gonna [TS]

00:36:08   go for a decade so if I can just keep [TS]

00:36:10   using my computer from euros point you [TS]

00:36:12   might as well wait I don't know if if [TS]

00:36:15   we're to having this podcast in 2019 I [TS]

00:36:17   still have no computer I swear I'm gonna [TS]

00:36:19   go back in time and buy an imac fro [TS]

00:36:21   right now i bet both of those things [TS]

00:36:23   will be true I bet that is hacker know [TS]

00:36:25   any like the big question for me which [TS]

00:36:28   is probably what you're thinking of also [TS]

00:36:29   is like well you're you're already seven [TS]

00:36:31   I Pro for like you know shape and [TS]

00:36:33   political reasons but like political [TS]

00:36:35   reasons but I'm thinking like what is [TS]

00:36:37   left for the Mac Pro to do and if you [TS]

00:36:39   like if you look at this like this [TS]

00:36:40   really is a lot of Mac Pro type Hardware [TS]

00:36:43   in an iMac case like what why should the [TS]

00:36:47   Mac Pro still exist with this and I like [TS]

00:36:49   him up the handful of reasons like my [TS]

00:36:51   big one was if you want multiple CPUs or [TS]

00:36:55   GPUs yeah so you know if it [TS]

00:36:57   it will presumably a new Mac Pro would [TS]

00:37:00   have to support either dual GPU at least [TS]

00:37:03   dual GPU sockets and maybe dual CPU [TS]

00:37:05   sockets that because otherwise again [TS]

00:37:07   like wow this thing exists and then of [TS]

00:37:08   course you know maybe they'd have a kind [TS]

00:37:09   of a fundable controller like a third [TS]

00:37:11   one to make more bandwidth total for [TS]

00:37:13   external connections and stuff maybe [TS]

00:37:16   they're gonna have some kind of 8k story [TS]

00:37:18   with arrow-display' 2 to 10 gig Ethernet [TS]

00:37:20   ports yeah and and the big thing also [TS]

00:37:23   would be presumably quieter and all [TS]

00:37:25   reliance and reliability just plain [TS]

00:37:27   reliability and modularity like what [TS]

00:37:29   you're looking for is yeah we was always [TS]

00:37:30   quieter and it's it doesn't get stressed [TS]

00:37:32   as much but if for pro hardware you want [TS]

00:37:35   it to just be super reliable you don't [TS]

00:37:37   want to be in the edge of the thermal [TS]

00:37:38   envelope like I kept thinking of the [TS]

00:37:39   thermal corner thing creds daily we [TS]

00:37:41   paint herself into a thermal corner with [TS]

00:37:42   the old Mac Pro I look at that that I'm [TS]

00:37:43   Mac Pro that looks like a hell of a [TS]

00:37:45   thermal corner like I don't know I don't [TS]

00:37:47   know how much Headroom you have in that [TS]

00:37:48   thing but there it's like 500 watt power [TS]

00:37:49   supply and that's a lot of energy to you [TS]

00:37:53   know the waste heat to get out of that [TS]

00:37:55   system the Mac Pro should have Headroom [TS]

00:37:59   it should be the type of thing that you [TS]

00:38:01   can stick either under a desk or on a [TS]

00:38:03   desk or whoever is going to be in some [TS]

00:38:05   editing Bay and leave it there and it [TS]

00:38:07   will just be rock-solid reliable and [TS]

00:38:09   quiet ish and that that's that's the [TS]

00:38:13   role and of course it'll be even more [TS]

00:38:14   expensive and hopefully also cooler [TS]

00:38:16   looking like if they're saving matte [TS]

00:38:17   black for something use it in the Mac [TS]

00:38:19   Pro yeah I mean I think it's I actually [TS]

00:38:23   am a little bit concerned like why is [TS]

00:38:25   this iMac not shipping now is this like [TS]

00:38:27   because they don't get the CPUs in [TS]

00:38:28   volume or the GPUs custom partly Maya [TS]

00:38:31   but I think it was always going to ship [TS]

00:38:32   like here's the thing about this WC they [TS]

00:38:34   announced a lot of thing a lot more [TS]

00:38:36   things than usual that are not shipping [TS]

00:38:38   so it's kind of like the old thing was [TS]

00:38:39   like we're going to tell you things that [TS]

00:38:41   are shipping in the near future are now [TS]

00:38:42   and if there's stuff later we can always [TS]

00:38:43   have another event about revised [TS]

00:38:45   whatever's but they just announced [TS]

00:38:46   everything that they have for this year [TS]

00:38:48   it seemed like an ounce almost [TS]

00:38:50   everything now even if it's not shipping [TS]

00:38:52   until December so it makes for a better [TS]

00:38:54   keynote I think we all day makes her [TS]

00:38:56   better keynote to show the iMac pro now [TS]

00:38:58   then are they really told us it's coming [TS]

00:39:00   than to wait until December and they're [TS]

00:39:02   going to miss the holiday season with it [TS]

00:39:03   to like it's just it's better they I [TS]

00:39:06   think they learn from the Mac Pro think [TS]

00:39:07   it's better to let people know what [TS]

00:39:08   coming and show it to them and get them [TS]

00:39:11   excited about it and it's not you know [TS]

00:39:12   when it releases everyone will buy it [TS]

00:39:14   and it'll be fine there's no reason they [TS]

00:39:15   need to have an October event to reveal [TS]

00:39:17   the iMac Pro so I'm happy they not [TS]

00:39:19   everyone will be buying it apparently [TS]

00:39:22   but I'm with you in principle I think to [TS]

00:39:24   answer your question mark I think what [TS]

00:39:25   about user replaceable stuff like having [TS]

00:39:27   real RAM that yeah Rhys are replaceable [TS]

00:39:29   I think to me in addition to what you [TS]

00:39:32   were saying especially about cooling I [TS]

00:39:33   think the advantage would be user [TS]

00:39:35   replaceable Ram user replaceable of [TS]

00:39:38   storage and user replaceable perhaps [TS]

00:39:41   graphics card or something like that I [TS]

00:39:43   think that's where a true Mac Pro would [TS]

00:39:45   shine and then for people who don't buy [TS]

00:39:48   computers and keep them for a decade [TS]

00:39:51   then you can get the iMac Pro but if you [TS]

00:39:54   like to have computers that are as old [TS]

00:39:57   as children then you can get a Mac Pro [TS]

00:40:00   yeah that seems reasonable all right so [TS]

00:40:04   what else what else in the hard way that [TS]

00:40:05   was it for the hardware at this point [TS]

00:40:06   right and we dumped weed we jumped right [TS]

00:40:08   into iOS 11 yeah right into messages [TS]

00:40:11   yeah because whoo yeah another I I did [TS]

00:40:15   lose the bet that message apps wouldn't [TS]

00:40:16   be mentioned at all but not by much [TS]

00:40:19   message apps were slightly mentioned and [TS]

00:40:22   I'm sure there were some minor [TS]

00:40:23   improvements to them but for the most [TS]

00:40:25   part I think it's kind of like on this [TS]

00:40:26   scale of watch OS and TV OS hold more [TS]

00:40:29   than TV I mean everything's more than TV [TS]

00:40:30   but kind of on the same scale watch it [TS]

00:40:32   was of like minor improvements here and [TS]

00:40:34   there but we didn't like for for this [TS]

00:40:37   brand new app store and an app type that [TS]

00:40:40   launched only a year ago we heard fairly [TS]

00:40:42   little about it and I think that's a [TS]

00:40:44   little bit concerning for people who [TS]

00:40:45   were making iMessage apps or who thought [TS]

00:40:47   that I was going to be they did their a [TS]

00:40:48   dogfooding it added Apple pay as an [TS]

00:40:49   iMessage app but but I think this is [TS]

00:40:51   what's the most important and messages [TS]

00:40:53   released ever because it's finally going [TS]

00:40:54   to work in theory the way that everyone [TS]

00:40:57   think that message app should work which [TS]

00:40:58   is if you send a bunch of messages on [TS]

00:41:00   one device and then you go to another [TS]

00:41:02   device the conversation you just had on [TS]

00:41:04   the other device is there that with the [TS]

00:41:05   iCloud sinking of the message I don't [TS]

00:41:07   know how they're doing that preserving [TS]

00:41:08   the privacy because the old answer was [TS]

00:41:09   like oh we can't do that because it send [TS]

00:41:10   encrypted and we can't send those [TS]

00:41:12   messages elsewhere but I just want and I [TS]

00:41:14   hope they're like actually chronological [TS]

00:41:15   and not whatever order they're in now so [TS]

00:41:18   if they do that successfully [TS]

00:41:20   of a time ordered series of back and [TS]

00:41:22   forth sub text messages between people [TS]

00:41:24   that is the same on all my devices this [TS]

00:41:26   will be the most important messages up [TS]

00:41:27   to never you know it's funny because I [TS]

00:41:29   am not being I am NOT trying to joke [TS]

00:41:31   right now but when they were talking [TS]

00:41:32   about how everything syncs across [TS]

00:41:34   devices I was genuinely confused because [TS]

00:41:36   that's kind of that's pretty much the [TS]

00:41:37   behavior I see with our messages unica i [TS]

00:41:40   was just about to say it stole my joke [TS]

00:41:41   that i am a guide must be an iMessage [TS]

00:41:43   unicorn because almost always i mean [TS]

00:41:45   there are definitely hiccups from time [TS]

00:41:47   to time but almost always that is what [TS]

00:41:48   happens today and i was really surprised [TS]

00:41:50   to see yeah I just had it when I got off [TS]

00:41:53   the plane I sent a text message to [TS]

00:41:56   somebody and then their text messages [TS]

00:41:58   for when I was flying came in below the [TS]

00:42:01   message I just sent because even though [TS]

00:42:03   they were like four hours old I want [TS]

00:42:06   that to go away I want it to just work [TS]

00:42:07   normally there's probably also a good [TS]

00:42:09   security white paper to read about how [TS]

00:42:10   the heck they did this while also [TS]

00:42:12   maintaining all their end-to-end [TS]

00:42:13   encryption stuff oh yeah I don't know it [TS]

00:42:16   seems like I would be willing to [TS]

00:42:18   sacrifice the encryption just to get the [TS]

00:42:21   messages inside because it's so [TS]

00:42:22   frustrating to not see your [TS]

00:42:23   conversations to be the same in both [TS]

00:42:25   places you know another thing that was [TS]

00:42:27   that was a little weird I have a [TS]

00:42:29   complaint for the Apple AV people that I [TS]

00:42:31   would like to air in front of everyone [TS]

00:42:33   if you're in the back of the room or [TS]

00:42:34   toward the back of the room the screen [TS]

00:42:36   that that the presenters are presenting [TS]

00:42:38   in front of it goes all the way to the [TS]

00:42:40   floor of the stage like this logo behind [TS]

00:42:42   it yeah the kind of like the logo - [TS]

00:42:43   right so it goes to the floor of the [TS]

00:42:45   stage which means anything that's [TS]

00:42:46   happening on the bottom like quarter of [TS]

00:42:48   the screen unless you're in the first 10 [TS]

00:42:49   or 15 rows you have no frickin clue what [TS]

00:42:52   is I got like the prices like they with [TS]

00:42:53   the prices and stuff in the Box all you [TS]

00:42:56   can see is the back of people's heads [TS]

00:42:57   and then everyone's craning their necks [TS]

00:42:59   it wasn't a great setup but though [TS]

00:43:00   they'll fix that next year well this is [TS]

00:43:01   why it's always been and I maybe we just [TS]

00:43:03   made a poor choice a little bit higher [TS]

00:43:04   in mosque on in Presidio the screen is a [TS]

00:43:07   little bit higher they're like hanging [TS]

00:43:08   her from the ceiling in Presidio there [TS]

00:43:09   was never a problem well no they're out [TS]

00:43:11   of the front screen the front front of [TS]

00:43:13   the room oh yeah I forget it [TS]

00:43:15   alright so iOS 11 it had messages [TS]

00:43:18   improvements I am really stoked about [TS]

00:43:20   the peer-to-peer Apple pay I don't know [TS]

00:43:22   how much that's going to blow up but [TS]

00:43:24   like a lot of my family and friends use [TS]

00:43:27   iPhones and so for that it'll be super [TS]

00:43:30   simple I'm curious to see what the [TS]

00:43:32   extract [TS]

00:43:33   from Apple pay kind of workflow is you [TS]

00:43:35   know how clunky is it to get it into [TS]

00:43:37   your bank do you have to just associate [TS]

00:43:39   a debit card and then that's just magic [TS]

00:43:41   and I think that'll be fine [TS]

00:43:43   yeah by me I'm just curious to see [TS]

00:43:44   they're competing what they're competing [TS]

00:43:45   with like Dwolla and square and other [TS]

00:43:47   companies that have a similar experience [TS]

00:43:48   so that I don't think they're gonna be [TS]

00:43:49   worse but it is kind of fragmented the [TS]

00:43:51   payment equals system now because I'm a [TS]

00:43:53   guess I've already was fragment if you [TS]

00:43:55   try to send somebody money you have to [TS]

00:43:56   go through this little dance first you [TS]

00:43:57   have square two used wall you're willing [TS]

00:43:59   to sign it but account for any of these [TS]

00:44:00   now it's gonna like the Levin though you [TS]

00:44:02   know yeah do you have Apple pay work it [TS]

00:44:04   out I mean if you go to this conference [TS]

00:44:05   next year everyone will be giving each [TS]

00:44:07   other money for meals on Apple pay so [TS]

00:44:09   that'll work out fine it'll be pretty [TS]

00:44:10   nice so series still a thing it is more [TS]

00:44:13   and more things over time there's new [TS]

00:44:15   voices which are good translation which [TS]

00:44:18   does look super cool but what I'm a [TS]

00:44:21   little concerned with is so I can say in [TS]

00:44:24   some arbitrary other language you know [TS]

00:44:25   hey where is the bathroom [TS]

00:44:27   but what happens when they reply like do [TS]

00:44:31   I wait wait wait hold on there after [TS]

00:44:34   that on the App Store right that'll take [TS]

00:44:35   their text to take their speech and [TS]

00:44:36   translate it for I guess probably they [TS]

00:44:38   parted me by Google but like white like [TS]

00:44:40   yeah that's a good point when I saw the [TS]

00:44:42   feature oh my god that'll be great for [TS]

00:44:43   travel I didn't even think about what I [TS]

00:44:44   do with the response problem like it's [TS]

00:44:47   I'm not sure I hand on the phone and [TS]

00:44:48   have them hold the button down right and [TS]

00:44:50   record their response and then I mean [TS]

00:44:51   I'm not trying to rain on the parade I'm [TS]

00:44:53   really not like it's an amazing feature [TS]

00:44:55   and I'm sure it's gonna be super cool [TS]

00:44:56   but if it's only one-way communication [TS]

00:45:00   it only takes you but so far it only [TS]

00:45:02   takes you one way and that's well we are [TS]

00:45:04   Americans traveling to places that don't [TS]

00:45:06   speak English so it is kind of our style [TS]

00:45:09   to just yell at people not accept not [TS]

00:45:11   have any kind of transport that is a [TS]

00:45:12   fair point but there's there's not I [TS]

00:45:15   don't recall that seeing very much [TS]

00:45:17   sirikit for you dude was right you were [TS]

00:45:20   that's really for people to pause on [TS]

00:45:22   that slide that had all the new and yes [TS]

00:45:23   on the red did you ever get that info [TS]

00:45:25   yeah I did there's nothing but there's I [TS]

00:45:26   mean and this was this is actually a big [TS]

00:45:28   disappointment for me that that there [TS]

00:45:30   was no like Siri KITT expansion into [TS]

00:45:32   audio type services so that I could use [TS]

00:45:34   her for overcast and people can either [TS]

00:45:36   for things like Spotify and everything [TS]

00:45:37   and I think you know last year when when [TS]

00:45:39   this was not present the theory we came [TS]

00:45:41   up with was well it's probably because [TS]

00:45:44   they just didn't get to it but it might [TS]

00:45:47   to protect and enhance Apple music [TS]

00:45:49   because that's giving up music a big [TS]

00:45:51   advantage in in Syria and have an [TS]

00:45:53   integration that will drive [TS]

00:45:54   subscriptions to Apple music over the [TS]

00:45:55   competitors so this year what as another [TS]

00:45:57   year goes by and it's not there [TS]

00:45:59   I still think those are the two [TS]

00:46:01   explanations but just like the rate like [TS]

00:46:03   the probability shifted a little bit [TS]

00:46:04   where like they might have still just [TS]

00:46:07   not gotten to it the thing is they added [TS]

00:46:09   the list was not very long so maybe they [TS]

00:46:11   just didn't get to it yet because it is [TS]

00:46:12   a big job you do to have some kind of [TS]

00:46:14   way to like you know index the content [TS]

00:46:16   of the audio service so that they know [TS]

00:46:18   even what - how to parse things to know [TS]

00:46:20   what people are talking about so I have [TS]

00:46:22   to have some kind of you know indexing [TS]

00:46:24   extension for them to index all the [TS]

00:46:26   shows and overcast for like in the whole [TS]

00:46:27   online service and things like that so [TS]

00:46:29   that is a lot for them to build there's [TS]

00:46:31   parts of it there already but that's a [TS]

00:46:32   lot that's a lot to build so maybe they [TS]

00:46:34   just didn't get to it but they are also [TS]

00:46:37   are still a really you know Apple music [TS]

00:46:39   is still in a pretty good place now [TS]

00:46:41   because it has Siri integration and [TS]

00:46:42   nothing else does and as they go into [TS]

00:46:44   things like the home pod it's going to [TS]

00:46:47   have you know similar effect of like [TS]

00:46:48   well if you want to use extreme music [TS]

00:46:50   with this new speaker that you want to [TS]

00:46:52   buy from Apple you can only use app [TS]

00:46:53   music with it basically so that is I [TS]

00:46:57   think again they might have just not [TS]

00:47:00   gotten to it yet but it as more time [TS]

00:47:03   goes on that they don't add this fairly [TS]

00:47:05   obvious feature that a lot of people [TS]

00:47:06   want I think the answer is going to be [TS]

00:47:09   much more likely to just be yeah they [TS]

00:47:11   just want to have that app music only [TS]

00:47:12   butBut what intense did they add like [TS]

00:47:13   they might just be doing in priority [TS]

00:47:15   order obviously your priority is audio [TS]

00:47:16   but maybe they're doing like the most [TS]

00:47:17   they think like the most common ones the [TS]

00:47:19   ones that have the most apps the most [TS]

00:47:20   users and they're working their way down [TS]

00:47:21   the list getting to audio eventually [TS]

00:47:23   right and that's again it's like that's [TS]

00:47:24   it depends on how long they go before [TS]

00:47:27   they before it happens like how you how [TS]

00:47:28   you evaluate this they didn't honestly [TS]

00:47:30   they didn't add as much as I thought [TS]

00:47:31   they would this year I thought there [TS]

00:47:32   would be a large expansion of Sirikit [TS]

00:47:34   intents and there really wasn't there [TS]

00:47:36   were like three or four of them and they [TS]

00:47:37   were you know fairly basic type things [TS]

00:47:40   so my whole prediction of this being [TS]

00:47:42   like an all Syria heavy keynote was [TS]

00:47:44   mostly wrong because they really it [TS]

00:47:47   really was not as much about Ceres I [TS]

00:47:49   expected you're right about one thing [TS]

00:47:50   though like I was totally expecting them [TS]

00:47:51   especially with the home pod business I [TS]

00:47:53   was expecting them to say Siri is [TS]

00:47:55   massively improved like we have made [TS]

00:47:57   Siri so much better it's smarter and [TS]

00:47:59   like just call it Siri - or we're like [TS]

00:48:01   really promoting the idea that Siri it [TS]

00:48:04   doesn't do things that are silly is it [TS]

00:48:06   currently does but they didn't and your [TS]

00:48:08   thigh remember like last week you were [TS]

00:48:09   like I don't think they're good you know [TS]

00:48:10   it's gonna be the same old Siri and [TS]

00:48:11   aside from new capabilities like [TS]

00:48:13   obviously a whole new vocabulary we're [TS]

00:48:15   talking about music to work with the [TS]

00:48:16   Apple music thing right boys right but [TS]

00:48:18   what about all the other things that we [TS]

00:48:20   currently ask like before the show [TS]

00:48:21   people were sharing screenshots of them [TS]

00:48:23   asking when it when is the the keynote [TS]

00:48:25   when is the Apple event so on and so [TS]

00:48:27   forth and I think someone said I was in [TS]

00:48:28   Italy patel said when is the the the [TS]

00:48:31   Apple Keynote and it said you know June [TS]

00:48:34   5th or whatever like what time does it [TS]

00:48:35   start and said you and fifth and other [TS]

00:48:36   people said oh you just got to ask it [TS]

00:48:37   the right way [TS]

00:48:38   when is the Apple event and it gave all [TS]

00:48:39   the info down to the time right and then [TS]

00:48:41   people followed up that with the exact [TS]

00:48:43   same text asking the Siri the same [TS]

00:48:45   question Siri going I don't know right [TS]

00:48:47   and so nothing in here that says we have [TS]

00:48:50   massively improved Siri they have [TS]

00:48:52   expanded Siri to be able to do more [TS]

00:48:55   things by extending its vocabulary [TS]

00:48:56   adding a few intents and putting it at [TS]

00:48:58   home pod but it seems like it's the same [TS]

00:49:00   old Siri they seem to be happy with [TS]

00:49:02   series understanding of things and I [TS]

00:49:04   really I really think they need to I [TS]

00:49:06   mean obviously you can do the marketing [TS]

00:49:09   push without the tech but I hope they [TS]

00:49:10   need to improve the tech I would love to [TS]

00:49:12   have a conversation with Siri I would [TS]

00:49:13   love to go back and forth to be able to [TS]

00:49:15   correct Syria to have it learn to have [TS]

00:49:16   it just just darn be smarter yeah and [TS]

00:49:20   also to be more reliable to end to be [TS]

00:49:22   more consistent that's the one thing [TS]

00:49:24   where you know we'll get to do with home [TS]

00:49:25   pod later but like they that like that's [TS]

00:49:28   what area where Siri has always been a [TS]

00:49:29   little behind competitor just [TS]

00:49:30   reliability and consistency in the [TS]

00:49:32   responses and and you know I think [TS]

00:49:35   getting it right every time that's why [TS]

00:49:36   people have to supposed to screenshots [TS]

00:49:37   because as soon as someone has a [TS]

00:49:38   comeback like oh I asked it and got the [TS]

00:49:40   thing right someone does immediately [TS]

00:49:42   file I asked the exact same question and [TS]

00:49:43   how and we're sitting next to each other [TS]

00:49:45   in a room it's not like we're in [TS]

00:49:46   different countries like what very [TS]

00:49:48   frustrating so make it makes you want to [TS]

00:49:50   use it less we'll get to that with the [TS]

00:49:51   home pod stuff we talk about that but we [TS]

00:49:52   talked about with the cylinders if it [TS]

00:49:54   doesn't do what you want you stop asking [TS]

00:49:57   it that question because it's not worth [TS]

00:49:58   your time and potential [TS]

00:50:00   self-consciousness to talk to your [TS]

00:50:02   device and have it come back to you in a [TS]

00:50:04   way that is not satisfactory to say oh [TS]

00:50:06   I'm not going through that again so this [TS]

00:50:08   year was the year of iPads and it was [TS]

00:50:10   the year of codex because not only is [TS]

00:50:12   there a TVC like [TS]

00:50:13   about earlier which is going to be used [TS]

00:50:15   for iPhone caption videos but hey is [TS]

00:50:18   what they call you that's what it was [TS]

00:50:20   now that that's replacing JPEG [TS]

00:50:22   apparently which aiming of itself like [TS]

00:50:24   that sounds good especially if you know [TS]

00:50:27   it's better in every measurable way but [TS]

00:50:29   it needs to be adopted everywhere like [TS]

00:50:32   JPEG is and I presume over time it will [TS]

00:50:34   and they made mention the State of the [TS]

00:50:35   Union that it's like an ISO standard or [TS]

00:50:37   something like that it's not it's not [TS]

00:50:38   the Apple proprietary thing is people [TS]

00:50:40   worrying it's not something they [TS]

00:50:41   invented and and I think they had a good [TS]

00:50:43   story about compatibility like that yeah [TS]

00:50:45   we're using this internally it takes up [TS]

00:50:47   the big selling point which they [TS]

00:50:48   emphasize a little bit is your phone [TS]

00:50:50   won't fill with videos and photos as [TS]

00:50:52   fast because they'll be smaller and also [TS]

00:50:55   by the way they'll be like nicer quality [TS]

00:50:57   and at the same time they're smaller so [TS]

00:50:59   that's a great product story because [TS]

00:51:01   that's a common problem people have or [TS]

00:51:02   filling their phone up with stuff but [TS]

00:51:04   then the story is okay well how do I [TS]

00:51:06   share them and they're they're going to [TS]

00:51:07   be super conservative [TS]

00:51:08   if you send your Keefe thing anywhere [TS]

00:51:11   else if you email it to somebody if you [TS]

00:51:12   try to import it to another app if you [TS]

00:51:14   send it in messages anything like that [TS]

00:51:16   then it converts on the fly the JPEG at [TS]

00:51:18   that point and you don't get the big win [TS]

00:51:20   unless everybody switches to Eve but I [TS]

00:51:22   don't know if they will but even if it's [TS]

00:51:23   just on device just if he never leaves [TS]

00:51:26   your device it's just on device and [TS]

00:51:28   maybe synching with photos that is still [TS]

00:51:29   a big win for the product please no one [TS]

00:51:31   else is doing that their phones are [TS]

00:51:32   going to fill up with photos faster than [TS]

00:51:34   apples of the same size [TS]

00:51:36   additionally depth API for those of you [TS]

00:51:39   who use the preposterous Li oversized [TS]

00:51:41   ridiculous phone that you shouldn't use [TS]

00:51:43   so that's kind of exciting it's going to [TS]

00:51:45   come to our phone this fall yeah but [TS]

00:51:48   that's kind of cool I'm curious to see [TS]

00:51:49   all snark aside I think that is one of [TS]

00:51:52   the more interesting ap is that they've [TS]

00:51:53   made mention of so far because I think [TS]

00:51:56   there could be some really cool and [TS]

00:51:58   clever stuff done with that I don't know [TS]

00:52:00   exactly what that would be otherwise I [TS]

00:52:02   would probably be back in writing it [TS]

00:52:03   right now because that's clearly the way [TS]

00:52:05   to a billion dollars but but don't I'm [TS]

00:52:08   really anxious to see you it's happening [TS]

00:52:10   with depth [TS]

00:52:11   now with depth but I'm really curious to [TS]

00:52:14   see kind of where that goes and what [TS]

00:52:15   what what all of you folks do with it [TS]

00:52:18   because I think it could be really [TS]

00:52:19   powerful and really interesting control [TS]

00:52:21   center is better now it's one page [TS]

00:52:25   which is so exciting because I cannot [TS]

00:52:27   tell you we can cheer for that that's [TS]

00:52:29   cool I cheered for that I cannot tell [TS]

00:52:33   you the amount of times I will swipe up [TS]

00:52:35   and then swipe left or right immediately [TS]

00:52:37   because I feel like anytime I open [TS]

00:52:39   control center [TS]

00:52:40   I am inevitably on the wrong page it is [TS]

00:52:42   like a bool that that's the way it works [TS]

00:52:44   so that's really cool the biggest [TS]

00:52:46   problem with control center I would [TS]

00:52:47   imagine that Apple Apple notice and we [TS]

00:52:49   don't how many people don't even know [TS]

00:52:51   there's another screen in control so [TS]

00:52:52   yeah like and especially if that [TS]

00:52:55   person's phone somehow gets switched to [TS]

00:52:56   the other screen and they're like I [TS]

00:52:57   can't my volume control is gone where [TS]

00:52:59   did it go like they don't see the little [TS]

00:53:01   dots I bet that's one of the big reasons [TS]

00:53:03   why they changed it it's not [TS]

00:53:04   discoverable and yes what for the people [TS]

00:53:06   who do know is it's frustrating but [TS]

00:53:07   having it all in one especially this it [TS]

00:53:09   doesn't take up your whole screen like [TS]

00:53:10   they have the room to make it bigger and [TS]

00:53:12   from what I saw it like you can [TS]

00:53:13   customize control center and sort of [TS]

00:53:15   decide what you want on your one screen [TS]

00:53:17   I'm not sure how much it scales like can [TS]

00:53:19   you put like all the widgets and your [TS]

00:53:21   control center fills up the whole screen [TS]

00:53:22   but anyway that's definitely an [TS]

00:53:23   improvement yeah underscore David Smith [TS]

00:53:26   I don't know if he's here somewhere but [TS]

00:53:27   he put he put the iOS 11 beta on to an [TS]

00:53:31   iPhone 6 and I got to play with it very [TS]

00:53:33   briefly and I was mostly playing with [TS]

00:53:34   control center and it worked really well [TS]

00:53:36   and they did a really good job of kind [TS]

00:53:38   of the faux 3d touch or forced touch [TS]

00:53:41   whatever it's called I forget what it's [TS]

00:53:42   called this minute but anyway so if you [TS]

00:53:44   if you tap on like the the panel that [TS]

00:53:47   has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and stuff like [TS]

00:53:48   that if you deep press on that on a more [TS]

00:53:51   modern iPhone it will immediately snap [TS]

00:53:53   to you know the expanded blown-up view [TS]

00:53:56   where it has text in it you there's a [TS]

00:53:58   few other controls and on an iPhone 6 or [TS]

00:54:00   you know one of the one of these ones [TS]

00:54:01   without forced touch then what it will [TS]

00:54:03   end up doing is if you just tap and hold [TS]

00:54:05   on that pain I think had a name for it [TS]

00:54:08   didn't they I forget what they were [TS]

00:54:09   calling it but anyway if you tap and [TS]

00:54:11   hold on that it just for a moment it'll [TS]

00:54:12   blow it up as though you had deep [TS]

00:54:13   touched it which I thought was really [TS]

00:54:15   well executed it looks visually it looks [TS]

00:54:18   good ish like I feel like it's a little [TS]

00:54:21   haphazard but by and large I'm okay with [TS]

00:54:24   the design but I am super amped to use [TS]

00:54:27   it because I think it is way more [TS]

00:54:28   functional than what we've got and I use [TS]

00:54:30   control center constantly so I'm really [TS]

00:54:33   excited it's it's function over form [TS]

00:54:34   finally because it like the old controls [TS]

00:54:36   looked more [TS]

00:54:37   it's like a thin line with a tiny little [TS]

00:54:38   thing on and even though that the touch [TS]

00:54:40   area for the tiny little bulb unlike [TS]

00:54:42   your volume control or like or [TS]

00:54:44   brightness slider or whatever the hit [TS]

00:54:45   area that was probably bigger looks [TS]

00:54:47   small and delicate to look better in [TS]

00:54:48   screenshots this looks kind of dorky and [TS]

00:54:50   screenshots but this is the giant bars [TS]

00:54:52   that you fill right that's that's like [TS]

00:54:54   the size of your finger it is it's like [TS]

00:54:56   the Ox oh good grips of control control [TS]

00:54:58   we don't care how it looks it's like it [TS]

00:55:01   is a big chunky thing put your thumb in [TS]

00:55:03   here when you slide it it'll be clear [TS]

00:55:04   how much white is filling the bar and [TS]

00:55:06   you can even zoom it to a bigger mode to [TS]

00:55:07   make the fill your entire screen so I've [TS]

00:55:09   this you know it doesn't look as nice [TS]

00:55:11   and screenshots maybe Johnny I was on [TS]

00:55:12   vacation or a stupid design door handles [TS]

00:55:14   but it you know you know you options [TS]

00:55:17   better you are always on vacation in [TS]

00:55:19   California am i right everyone I mean [TS]

00:55:20   that's kind of how he lives in England [TS]

00:55:21   that right I don't know [TS]

00:55:22   oh thanks all right what was now you [TS]

00:55:26   have in the audience anyway just a all [TS]

00:55:28   right that's that sounds likely fight me [TS]

00:55:30   all right Oh a lock Center and [TS]

00:55:32   Notification Center are now merged and I [TS]

00:55:35   don't know what to think about this I [TS]

00:55:37   did not get a chance to play with that [TS]

00:55:38   on underscores phone it the way they [TS]

00:55:40   demoed it it looked pretty good to me [TS]

00:55:43   but I'm gonna be perturbed if I swipe [TS]

00:55:46   down to see past notifications and then [TS]

00:55:48   swipe up to go back to what I was doing [TS]

00:55:50   and then immediately have to like [TS]

00:55:52   reauthorize myself and use touch ID [TS]

00:55:54   again I don't think that's how it works [TS]

00:55:56   that's the thing I'm not sure showing [TS]

00:55:58   you the lock screen but you haven't real [TS]

00:55:59   acht your phone on Maya the promise and [TS]

00:56:02   fess that I am very bad at dealing with [TS]

00:56:04   notifications I don't understand where [TS]

00:56:06   notifications go see them and then go do [TS]

00:56:10   I say where and and I will like dismiss [TS]

00:56:13   them or read them and I want to see that [TS]

00:56:15   notification again I'm hoping what this [TS]

00:56:16   does is make it so notifications are in [TS]

00:56:18   a single place and they stay there [TS]

00:56:20   forever and I can just scroll Scroll [TS]

00:56:22   scroll and go back through them at any [TS]

00:56:23   time I'm not sure if that's true but [TS]

00:56:25   that would be a usability improvement [TS]

00:56:26   for me because having notifications of [TS]

00:56:28   multiple places and having them sort of [TS]

00:56:29   I don't know Auto dismiss themselves or [TS]

00:56:32   they go off into the cornfield I don't [TS]

00:56:33   know where I don't know where they go [TS]

00:56:35   but I can't I can't find them again and [TS]

00:56:36   it's frustrating yeah I mean it seems [TS]

00:56:38   like every for the last few iOS releases [TS]

00:56:40   they've messed with the lockscreen vs. [TS]

00:56:43   Notification Center because you know [TS]

00:56:45   ever since touch ID got super fast it [TS]

00:56:47   got kind of weird and then they tried [TS]

00:56:48   messing it with another way last year [TS]

00:56:50   and now this [TS]

00:56:50   messing with a different way they're [TS]

00:56:52   just trying to solve the problem of how [TS]

00:56:54   do you make these things continue to be [TS]

00:56:56   sensible with hardware advances and new [TS]

00:57:00   UI trends and as people as these things [TS]

00:57:02   get more advanced and everything so I [TS]

00:57:03   think you know this is like the annual [TS]

00:57:05   messing with the lockscreen type thing [TS]

00:57:08   and well whatever it is it's probably [TS]

00:57:10   fine and we're all going to get used to [TS]

00:57:11   it in like a day there's gonna be a lot [TS]

00:57:13   of complaining but everyone get used to [TS]

00:57:14   it so through the magic of iCloud I've [TS]

00:57:18   noticed in our shared node that we [TS]

00:57:20   should talk about something that's [TS]

00:57:21   awesome [TS]

00:57:22   responsive this week by fracture go to [TS]

00:58:04   it'll hang on the wall but it's not like [TS]

00:58:06   really heavy it's nice lightweight thing [TS]

00:58:08   so it's not gonna like rip a nail out of [TS]

00:58:09   your wall or anything like that it's [TS]

00:58:10   very beautifully made they make the [TS]

00:58:13   color and contrast of your photo really [TS]

00:58:15   pop and the sleek frameless design looks [TS]

00:58:18   really cool and modern you don't have to [TS]

00:58:19   frame that unit that's super expensive [TS]

00:58:20   and in a big pain you don't to frame it [TS]

00:58:22   looks great by itself that's all it is a [TS]

00:58:24   standalone object it's modern it's clean [TS]

00:58:55   mistake and then you put in a teepee in [TS]

00:58:57   the in the you know question of where [TS]

00:58:59   did you hear about it which podcast are [TS]

00:59:01   you talking about so fracture me calm [TS]

00:59:02   slash podcast mention [TS]

00:59:04   a teepee and that one question field [TS]

00:59:06   there to help support the show and to [TS]

00:59:07   get 10% off your first order thank you [TS]

00:59:09   very much to fracture for sponsoring our [TS]

00:59:11   show maybe you can bite people into your [TS]

00:59:15   house and have them stare at you while [TS]

00:59:17   you do the ad reads the show normally [TS]

00:59:19   because you just nailed three in a row [TS]

00:59:20   no three in a row well done sir well [TS]

00:59:22   done that that does not happen that [TS]

00:59:27   often so that's super exciting all right [TS]

00:59:29   we got it we got to pick up the pace [TS]

00:59:30   because we got a lot more to talk about [TS]

00:59:31   someone to try to speed run through some [TS]

00:59:32   stuff live photos has motion smoothing [TS]

00:59:35   things looping they didn't I don't [TS]

00:59:37   believe have the like what is that [TS]

00:59:39   Google app that was super cool he is [TS]

00:59:41   super cool that will take your motion [TS]

00:59:43   photo that's kind of bullying it around [TS]

00:59:45   and kind of lock it I think they [TS]

00:59:46   actually did that do that yeah does a [TS]

00:59:48   few different features it does that it [TS]

00:59:49   does like the the cinemagraph kind of [TS]

00:59:51   thing where you have like a motion thing [TS]

00:59:52   that kind of freezes the background and [TS]

00:59:54   they also had the long exposure thing [TS]

00:59:56   which kind of looks like that Ben is [TS]

00:59:57   still version there were a few different [TS]

00:59:59   improvement though [TS]

00:59:59   improvement though [TS]

01:00:00   pretty cool so here's my question about [TS]

01:00:01   live photos which I don't have an answer [TS]

01:00:02   to it because it's day one of WotC I [TS]

01:00:04   think that they're using heap for live [TS]

01:00:06   photo live photos and that every single [TS]

01:00:09   frame of it is in HD h.265 compressed [TS]

01:00:13   thing like that's why you can pick a [TS]

01:00:14   keyframe you know now we have like a [TS]

01:00:15   high-res JPEG and then there's really [TS]

01:00:17   low quality like you know MPEG animation [TS]

01:00:20   for the live picture animation you would [TS]

01:00:21   never want to say oh I want to replace [TS]

01:00:23   my still image with a frame from the [TS]

01:00:25   crappy low res video in a live picture [TS]

01:00:27   seems to me that in the new thing that [TS]

01:00:29   it takes a series of 17 you know or 20 [TS]

01:00:32   pictures or whatever how long it is and [TS]

01:00:33   every single one of them is exactly as [TS]

01:00:35   if you take in a photo from from your [TS]

01:00:37   camera and that's why you can choose [TS]

01:00:39   which frame you want it could be they're [TS]

01:00:41   just letting you choose a keyframe and [TS]

01:00:42   if you choose that one your thing looks [TS]

01:00:43   all blurry and gross but I really hope [TS]

01:00:44   that live photos are now chief [TS]

01:00:47   containers and every single frame of [TS]

01:00:49   them is max quality because that would [TS]

01:00:51   be awesome that would be really nice I [TS]

01:00:53   mean and that might depend on new [TS]

01:00:54   hardware to be able to like dump image [TS]

01:00:57   data off the sensor at that speed at [TS]

01:00:58   that resolution yeah reliably but if [TS]

01:01:00   they can do any part of that you know if [TS]

01:01:02   they can just increase the frame rate or [TS]

01:01:04   increase the resolution of the video [TS]

01:01:06   segment on older hardware on current [TS]

01:01:07   phones or older phones that would be an [TS]

01:01:09   awesome improvement and they do have [TS]

01:01:11   they're gonna have hardware support for [TS]

01:01:12   h.265 on existing phones so they could [TS]

01:01:14   do the old way which is we'll take one [TS]

01:01:16   really good JPEG or Heath image at super [TS]

01:01:18   high res and then taking h.265 video at [TS]

01:01:21   higher revs because now we can do that [TS]

01:01:22   just to make you know to make live [TS]

01:01:24   photos nicer because very often live [TS]

01:01:26   photos are really cute but the live [TS]

01:01:28   photo 'part like the animated part is so [TS]

01:01:30   much lower res and lower quality than [TS]

01:01:31   the still image it's kind of [TS]

01:01:33   disappointing yeah so my speed run is [TS]

01:01:34   going excellently Siri giving you it [TS]

01:01:37   always does it always does [TS]

01:01:39   Siri giving is giving you things this is [TS]

01:01:41   the air-quote series giving you things [TS]

01:01:42   from other apps and other in other [TS]

01:01:43   places they use the example of someplace [TS]

01:01:45   in Iceland that I'm not going to try to [TS]

01:01:46   pronounce so quote-unquote Siri will see [TS]

01:01:49   you interacting with like a webpage [TS]

01:01:51   about Iceland and then when you try to [TS]

01:01:53   type that same name and an iMessage will [TS]

01:01:55   Auto suggest it looked cool some machine [TS]

01:01:57   learning stuff well I also little rat [TS]

01:01:59   you out to Apple news cuz you're go to [TS]

01:02:00   Apple knows who'd be like do you want [TS]

01:02:02   some stories about Iceland's like how do [TS]

01:02:03   you know I'm interested in Iceland Apple [TS]

01:02:05   news that was a little creepy I [TS]

01:02:07   little googly a little aggressive little [TS]

01:02:09   aggressive all right some Maps has [TS]

01:02:10   internal maps of malls which aren't [TS]

01:02:12   going to exist in two years and it also [TS]

01:02:15   has opening retail stores so they'll be [TS]

01:02:18   oh yeah yeah it's enough good Apple [TS]

01:02:20   stores and then internal or Airport maps [TS]

01:02:22   of the inside of the airport terminal [TS]

01:02:23   maps that's super fun eyes not my [TS]

01:02:25   Airport of course not your so of course [TS]

01:02:29   I do not disturb while driving [TS]

01:02:30   two thumbs up I think that's yeah well [TS]

01:02:32   they're gonna be on my default cuz I [TS]

01:02:34   don't get is yes I mean this is what [TS]

01:02:36   imagine like that I mean that's yeah [TS]

01:02:37   genuinely good right so everyone who's [TS]

01:02:39   applauding it you can alternate on on [TS]

01:02:40   your phones and like have everyone who [TS]

01:02:42   texts you get that rude message back [TS]

01:02:43   that says I'm driving now again you can [TS]

01:02:45   all send you like oh I I think this is [TS]

01:02:48   but again it this is kind of like the [TS]

01:02:49   Apple watch like annoyance of [TS]

01:02:51   notifications thing like this is the [TS]

01:02:53   kind of thing that's an awesome thing to [TS]

01:02:54   do it's I assumes gonna be on by default [TS]

01:02:57   which is even more awesome the my only [TS]

01:02:59   hesitation of judging it is like will [TS]

01:03:01   people leave it on in enough volume to [TS]

01:03:03   matter and I think we all should you [TS]

01:03:06   know let's get started with our audience [TS]

01:03:07   that's a lot of people right there let's [TS]

01:03:08   get started and let's leave it on okay [TS]

01:03:10   then like my mom tries to text you and [TS]

01:03:11   gets this rude message back and thinks [TS]

01:03:13   you wrote it because there's no [TS]

01:03:14   indication in the UI that you are [TS]

01:03:15   literally not typing that and you can [TS]

01:03:17   say well if you're driving how did you [TS]

01:03:18   have time to write me this grammatically [TS]

01:03:22   correct correctly punctuated sentence [TS]

01:03:24   they should know it's not you because [TS]

01:03:26   everything is spelled right at it I know [TS]

01:03:28   you were at a stoplight I was gonna say [TS]

01:03:30   like is your mom really like that but I [TS]

01:03:31   thought well actually I don't know your [TS]

01:03:32   mom but she produced you and so haha [TS]

01:03:35   there's a chance she sent me a grammar [TS]

01:03:38   correction for a recess no way you don't [TS]

01:03:42   say so yeah so we're all going to we're [TS]

01:03:45   all friends here and we're all going to [TS]

01:03:46   agree to leave do not disturb while [TS]

01:03:47   driving on I also thought it it's [TS]

01:03:49   visually a little bit kind of cheesy and [TS]

01:03:51   ham-fisted but the thing where you can [TS]

01:03:53   say you can reply and I guess if you [TS]

01:03:56   have an urgent message you it'll say hey [TS]

01:03:59   if you R if this is really urgent reply [TS]

01:04:01   with the word urgent and the phone will [TS]

01:04:03   let that bubble through it was let your [TS]

01:04:04   friends immediately type urgent to tell [TS]

01:04:06   you I call this new Pokemon it's totally [TS]

01:04:09   urgent like who's what is urgent really [TS]

01:04:12   I'm going to tell them how [TS]

01:04:13   I pass it and then you're gonna look at [TS]

01:04:15   your phone and see that they caught a [TS]

01:04:16   new Magikarp and you're gonna crash do I [TS]

01:04:18   tell them well hopefully your friends [TS]

01:04:21   are nice enough to know to know that [TS]

01:04:22   they're taking their your life into [TS]

01:04:24   their hand your friends sound like jerks [TS]

01:04:25   right wait that's us [TS]

01:04:27   Oh God this took a dark turn okay so uh [TS]

01:04:32   homekit speakers airplay to is a thing [TS]

01:04:35   kind of kind of telegraphing the end of [TS]

01:04:37   the keynote there all right well yeah [TS]

01:04:39   but yeah they have homekit now support [TS]

01:04:41   so speaker type homekit was not renamed [TS]

01:04:43   assyria I lost that bet as well I mean I [TS]

01:04:45   lost all my predictions but yeah they [TS]

01:04:48   have multi-room audio that's presumably [TS]

01:04:49   synched up and everything like so knows [TS]

01:04:51   not the first time they took a dig at [TS]

01:04:53   Sonos during this keno hook but not not [TS]

01:04:56   surprising and I mean they actually had [TS]

01:04:58   multi-room audio with the iTunes share [TS]

01:05:00   thing forever ago and so yeah that's [TS]

01:05:02   know pretty nice I'm looking forward to [TS]

01:05:05   there being the API for that for [TS]

01:05:07   third-party devs to presumably control [TS]

01:05:09   that's actually like the only thing on [TS]

01:05:11   the overcast like to-do list so far [TS]

01:05:13   things that you'd integrate this summer [TS]

01:05:14   I was just as they go out of business [TS]

01:05:17   good job Marco yeah did they have a [TS]

01:05:20   slide or somebody tweeted something and [TS]

01:05:22   said they had a list of all the devices [TS]

01:05:24   that support airplay to write all the [TS]

01:05:26   manufacturers that are support airplay [TS]

01:05:28   to so you can use this new better [TS]

01:05:29   protocol to talk to them and Sonos was [TS]

01:05:30   not on that list [TS]

01:05:32   the dozens Ford airplay one either so it [TS]

01:05:33   to do its onus on an airplane you [TS]

01:05:35   basically have to like have an airport [TS]

01:05:36   Express [TS]

01:05:37   that you have run into the aux jack of a [TS]

01:05:39   quite pricey so nose bridge product that [TS]

01:05:42   has an aux input and then the main [TS]

01:05:45   problem with that is that then airplay [TS]

01:05:47   has a two-second lag Soto's adds its own [TS]

01:05:50   lag also for like another second or so [TS]

01:05:52   so anything it's like moving through [TS]

01:05:53   maple syrup you like hit pause and then [TS]

01:05:55   three seconds later it pauses it's not a [TS]

01:05:57   great experience it's not a sweet [TS]

01:05:59   solution is it so the ghost of ping is [TS]

01:06:03   back as that's excited that the cousin [TS]

01:06:06   of connects is the cat because we didn't [TS]

01:06:08   we said connect they all connect does [TS]

01:06:09   not like ping it's I don't I can't keep [TS]

01:06:11   track of their social yeah connect is [TS]

01:06:13   like commit or artists and YouTube for [TS]

01:06:15   artists but neither but both Twitter and [TS]

01:06:17   YouTube are way more popular than it was [TS]

01:06:19   and is it is connect still there or do [TS]

01:06:21   they replace it with whatever this new [TS]

01:06:22   thing so here's the thing is it will [TS]

01:06:23   show you what your friends are listening [TS]

01:06:25   your friends will assume this your [TS]

01:06:26   friends listing that where is it getting [TS]

01:06:27   your friends from does Apple have a [TS]

01:06:30   social graph I mean they have they comp [TS]

01:06:32   your contacts but I mean that's what I'm [TS]

01:06:34   saying it is another attempt for Apple [TS]

01:06:36   to say please create a new social graph [TS]

01:06:38   on the social network that we Apple are [TS]

01:06:40   created and it will totally be here six [TS]

01:06:41   months from now and the people don't [TS]

01:06:43   want to make a new social grandma it [TS]

01:06:45   could get them from Twitter it can't [TS]

01:06:46   really get them from contacts you have [TS]

01:06:48   family which is used for a lot of things [TS]

01:06:49   but that's not you don't want to see [TS]

01:06:50   what your family is listening to so and [TS]

01:06:52   no one wants to see what I'm listening [TS]

01:06:53   to [TS]

01:06:53   no that's that's a sense what what does [TS]

01:06:56   Marco's news it just fish nothing but [TS]

01:06:58   fish all day long hard-coded string [TS]

01:07:00   constant yeah seriously a really good B [TS]

01:07:02   music hits who developers will have [TS]

01:07:04   access to Apple music and I Club library [TS]

01:07:07   which is really cool pretty cool uh I [TS]

01:07:08   maybe I missed something [TS]

01:07:10   but phil was really amped about the new [TS]

01:07:14   app store and I'm really not like I [TS]

01:07:17   don't yeah we just we just care if the [TS]

01:07:19   search works and he didn't demo that so [TS]

01:07:21   we don't know like I guess if you're an [TS]

01:07:23   app developer it's cool if you get [TS]

01:07:24   featured right and you have this big [TS]

01:07:26   thing and your pages look nicer and [TS]

01:07:28   they'll be there'll be sessions during [TS]

01:07:29   the week to say here's how you can [TS]

01:07:31   support more stuff like one of them had [TS]

01:07:32   like a little award like this little [TS]

01:07:33   film what do you call it film festival [TS]

01:07:37   thing with the little ivy leaves or [TS]

01:07:38   whatever they're supposed to be rather [TS]

01:07:39   you could say this is it someone in the [TS]

01:07:42   audience said it but didn't hear it [TS]

01:07:43   laurels there you thank you there [TS]

01:07:47   probably is an API to put up the awards [TS]

01:07:50   or some sort of thing that your app won [TS]

01:07:51   at the top of your page like wait I [TS]

01:07:52   create my own awards and put them there [TS]

01:07:54   yeah [TS]

01:07:55   alright this that's going to quickly [TS]

01:07:58   become useless if that's what it is and [TS]

01:08:00   also by the way that you know they [TS]

01:08:01   safari blocks Auto playing video but as [TS]

01:08:04   you scroll through the new App Store app [TS]

01:08:07   playing video and I'm pretty sure [TS]

01:08:09   safaris not blocking that one anyway I [TS]

01:08:11   think it'll be fine you know what was it [TS]

01:08:13   your prediction was that it would [TS]

01:08:14   revised the Mac App Store which is a [TS]

01:08:16   quite a laugh about that alas that was a [TS]

01:08:19   longshot I said so maybe they did I mean [TS]

01:08:21   they didn't show a lot of Mac OS High [TS]

01:08:22   Sierra might have a totally redo they [TS]

01:08:24   showed me do it hi Sierra I can't [TS]

01:08:27   believe it's called that did they show [TS]

01:08:28   it's so bad it's like they had not I'm [TS]

01:08:30   not used to it yet I don't know if I [TS]

01:08:31   ever will be that's right really I'm [TS]

01:08:33   glad they revised the App Store app it's [TS]

01:08:34   fine it looks it looks better than old [TS]

01:08:36   one and maybe the search will be better [TS]

01:08:38   this is the kind of it's like we're not [TS]

01:08:39   really gonna know how it affects [TS]

01:08:42   developers until it's out there because [TS]

01:08:44   it's going to change everything we know [TS]

01:08:46   that it's going to change things like [TS]

01:08:47   click-through rates and how effective [TS]

01:08:49   search is or isn't for us it's going to [TS]

01:08:52   change purchase rates it's going to [TS]

01:08:53   change a lot because the entire UI is [TS]

01:08:55   different the information density is way [TS]

01:08:57   lower there's way fewer apps on screen [TS]

01:09:00   at once that's going to be a big effect [TS]

01:09:02   in some direction the value of being [TS]

01:09:04   featured is probably going to be way [TS]

01:09:06   higher because those are fewer at a time [TS]

01:09:09   and they're it's like a more [TS]

01:09:11   in-your-face feature I do really like [TS]

01:09:13   that they separated out games and ads [TS]

01:09:15   that's that's really nice for both [TS]

01:09:18   people you know both types of ad makers [TS]

01:09:20   there because if you're looking for one [TS]

01:09:22   you're probably not looking for the [TS]

01:09:23   other at the same time so that should [TS]

01:09:24   help people browsing both places to have [TS]

01:09:27   separate charts separate features and [TS]

01:09:29   not have to worry about like you know [TS]

01:09:30   seeing the kind of thing you're not [TS]

01:09:31   looking forward them yeah there were a [TS]

01:09:33   bunch of other things that that were on [TS]

01:09:34   this the yo the screen of words where [TS]

01:09:37   some are white and some are grey the [TS]

01:09:38   work that yeah the word cloud and like [TS]

01:09:40   schedule a call that's in trap actually [TS]

01:09:43   knew like recently moving on from the [TS]

01:09:45   app store ready because there's one [TS]

01:09:46   other major features of the new app [TS]

01:09:48   store app that I mean correct me if I'm [TS]

01:09:50   wrong but this is new in app purchases [TS]

01:09:52   are viewable on the App Store is [TS]

01:09:55   separately purchasable things like [TS]

01:09:56   they're in app purchases that are not in [TS]

01:09:58   app this seems like a big deal because [TS]

01:10:00   the so the theory goes that in that [TS]

01:10:02   purchases represent a lot of money and [TS]

01:10:04   you can only see them if you're in the [TS]

01:10:07   app and [TS]

01:10:07   if you have resume if you have an app [TS]

01:10:10   and the app offers an in-app purchase [TS]

01:10:11   you will see that as a separately [TS]

01:10:13   purchasable item in the app store that [TS]

01:10:15   seems like you know a big way to get [TS]

01:10:18   more money for an app purchases to [TS]

01:10:19   remind people if they go there oh by the [TS]

01:10:21   way that app that you haven't launched [TS]

01:10:22   has an in-app purchase and it might [TS]

01:10:24   bring you back into the app and make you [TS]

01:10:25   buy something that seems like a big deal [TS]

01:10:26   to me yeah so speedruns still going well [TS]

01:10:29   so speaking of core ml it's a thing [TS]

01:10:33   sounds cool [TS]

01:10:34   hey our kid it's a thing sounds quick no [TS]

01:10:37   no I'm not gonna do that fast come on [TS]

01:10:39   I'm trying guys I'm trying I mean like [TS]

01:10:42   this is this is all like this is one of [TS]

01:10:43   those like we can't wait to see what you [TS]

01:10:44   do the kind of things where that [TS]

01:10:45   actually makes sense like most people [TS]

01:10:47   can't off the top of their head name a [TS]

01:10:48   cool app that doesn't yet exist that [TS]

01:10:51   this name makes possible but there are a [TS]

01:10:53   lot of them and it's the kind of thing [TS]

01:10:54   we're like you're gonna have some idea [TS]

01:10:56   or you're gonna hear some idea person's [TS]

01:10:58   awful idea and you're gonna say oh yeah [TS]

01:11:01   but that would take like a hundred [TS]

01:11:03   people staff and two hundred million [TS]

01:11:04   dollars and it isn't even possible the [TS]

01:11:06   API wait it is now possible in the API [TS]

01:11:09   now you gives me the two hundred million [TS]

01:11:11   dollars in the big staff it'll all work [TS]

01:11:13   out great oh they had pokey Mongo is a [TS]

01:11:15   perfect example which was already doing [TS]

01:11:16   a are a bad job of it you know but not [TS]

01:11:18   that it's a core part of the game but [TS]

01:11:19   they would try to make your Pokemon look [TS]

01:11:20   like he's on the side of aw he's [TS]

01:11:21   bouncing all over the place now hope you [TS]

01:11:23   firmly planted on the sidewalk I'm sure [TS]

01:11:24   they will seriously Pokemon go [TS]

01:11:27   experience hooray everyone still playing [TS]

01:11:30   that right yeah totally I also thought [TS]

01:11:32   the demo was really cool very Firefly [TS]

01:11:33   asked which of course spoke to me that [TS]

01:11:35   was pretty exciting but it does look [TS]

01:11:38   cool but I think we should probably skip [TS]

01:11:40   forward to the iPad I guess and there is [TS]

01:11:43   there's a new iPad so moving on I'm just [TS]

01:11:48   kidding but now there's a new iPad [TS]

01:11:50   interestingly so the IP the new 10-inch [TS]

01:11:53   iPad does look really cool and the iPad [TS]

01:11:55   features of iOS 11 did really appeal to [TS]

01:11:58   me in this dress some of the dragon [TS]

01:12:00   drops awful bit which we'll get to in a [TS]

01:12:01   second looks phenomenal [TS]

01:12:03   the one thing about the iPad the 10 inch [TS]

01:12:05   iPad though is that we had all kind of [TS]

01:12:08   concluded and it was damn Provos that [TS]

01:12:10   put this together I believe a few months [TS]

01:12:12   ago that what they would end up doing is [TS]

01:12:14   making an iPad that was the same [TS]

01:12:16   resolution if I remember right I might [TS]

01:12:18   be butchering the details here the same [TS]

01:12:19   resolution is the 12 point 9 [TS]

01:12:21   whatever it is iPad pro so you can [TS]

01:12:23   basically have two iPad minis [TS]

01:12:24   side-by-side and that's what this [TS]

01:12:26   10-inch will be and they will get that [TS]

01:12:27   by shrinking bezels John shrinking [TS]

01:12:30   bezels and doing all that sorts of magic [TS]

01:12:32   but it's actually an in-between [TS]

01:12:34   resolution between the the nine point [TS]

01:12:37   whatever inch iPad pro then this which [TS]

01:12:40   is in the middle and the twelve inch [TS]

01:12:42   iPad pro which is fine it seems like [TS]

01:12:45   they've kept the the density the same [TS]

01:12:46   they're just clipping the edge of the [TS]

01:12:48   screen in a slightly different spot but [TS]

01:12:50   that seems weird to me like how is that [TS]

01:12:52   gonna work with size classes this is [TS]

01:12:54   just a peculiar choice it'll be fine I [TS]

01:12:56   mean I'm actually kind of glad they did [TS]

01:12:58   that because I think having the full [TS]

01:13:01   twelve point nine resolution in that [TS]

01:13:03   size screen would have made things a [TS]

01:13:04   little bit small a little bit small [TS]

01:13:06   touch targets a little bit small text [TS]

01:13:07   for some people and so I think they [TS]

01:13:10   probably made the right choice on that [TS]

01:13:11   but I'm not so very happy to see with [TS]

01:13:14   this model and with the new twelve nine [TS]

01:13:16   update which I did not expect to happen [TS]

01:13:17   that there's now no there's no other [TS]

01:13:20   like glaring as far as I know yet [TS]

01:13:22   there's no other like glaring [TS]

01:13:24   differences between those two sizes like [TS]

01:13:26   you know last time I was like well the [TS]

01:13:28   twelve nine had USB 3 and fast charging [TS]

01:13:30   and the nine seven had the better screen [TS]

01:13:33   and the true tone and like there were [TS]

01:13:34   like these these weird differences that [TS]

01:13:36   they had now they all seem to have the [TS]

01:13:39   same features just two different sizes [TS]

01:13:40   of the same features and that's really [TS]

01:13:42   nice I didn't get to look at the twelve [TS]

01:13:43   point nine which by the way I'm also [TS]

01:13:45   glad that they're still doing at 12:09 [TS]

01:13:46   because now they have a reason to [TS]

01:13:47   because it is a different res but the [TS]

01:13:48   ten point five no headphone jack what no [TS]

01:13:52   in phone Jack that I could find I held [TS]

01:13:54   it in my hands someone can look on the [TS]

01:13:55   website now and look it up but I held it [TS]

01:13:56   in my hands and I wrote it around I did [TS]

01:13:58   not find a headphone jack maybe I missed [TS]

01:13:59   it they also moved like the volume [TS]

01:14:00   control and the power button really [TS]

01:14:03   close to the corners of the device like [TS]

01:14:05   they're really up I don't know why they [TS]

01:14:06   did that to see what the inside of this [TS]

01:14:07   thing looks like the SIM slot is way [TS]

01:14:08   down in one of the corners as well but [TS]

01:14:10   anyway if you're if you're afraid that [TS]

01:14:11   the 10.5 is going to feel too big if you [TS]

01:14:13   have a current 9.7 handling it just you [TS]

01:14:16   know without a case by itself it didn't [TS]

01:14:17   feel that bad like I think that's the [TS]

01:14:19   next I guess the size I will buy [TS]

01:14:20   probably I'm no choice but they're not [TS]

01:14:21   going to make a nine point seven pro I'm [TS]

01:14:23   assuming going forward but it is a nice [TS]

01:14:25   compromise size it is bigger better [TS]

01:14:27   faster but not it doesn't feel like a [TS]

01:14:30   lunch tray [TS]

01:14:31   who knows maybe out maybe I'll miss the [TS]

01:14:32   9.7 as time goes on and they made the [TS]

01:14:35   little like I don't that weight wise it [TS]

01:14:37   felt kind of the same it's really hard [TS]

01:14:38   to tell but if you're afraid that the [TS]

01:14:41   ten point five is going to be too huge [TS]

01:14:42   don't be afraid go to your App Store [TS]

01:14:44   visit and try it out I think I think it [TS]

01:14:46   will be extremely popular among the same [TS]

01:14:47   crowd that bought the 9.7 Pro yeah it's [TS]

01:14:50   gonna be like this is the new iPad that [TS]

01:14:52   you should probably get like unless you [TS]

01:14:54   really want other sizes that you can [TS]

01:14:56   either get like the old decrepit mini or [TS]

01:14:59   you can get the massive lunch tray or [TS]

01:15:01   mini but but if you if you really if you [TS]

01:15:03   really don't have any like specific need [TS]

01:15:06   for something super big or super small [TS]

01:15:08   the new the 10.5 is the one to get o [TS]

01:15:10   unless you need to be super cheap then [TS]

01:15:12   you get the chief nine point seven that [TS]

01:15:13   came out last week or whatever HDR [TS]

01:15:14   support lots of display related things [TS]

01:15:16   well yeah 120 Hertz reset or refresh and [TS]

01:15:19   HDR Zawar which I was really surprised [TS]

01:15:20   about now HDR support is basically like [TS]

01:15:22   you can put that label on anything that [TS]

01:15:24   gets brighter than normal like I don't [TS]

01:15:26   know if six said like the full range of [TS]

01:15:28   like double vision HDR is an incredible [TS]

01:15:30   brightness retina searing brightness [TS]

01:15:31   this does not reset level but like a lot [TS]

01:15:33   of HDR monitors for PCs and stuff as [TS]

01:15:35   long as you go way brighter than normal [TS]

01:15:37   monitor and you can except HDR input and [TS]

01:15:39   display it in a nice way you get to call [TS]

01:15:42   your hell of HDR so I think because it's [TS]

01:15:43   probably middle the road there but one [TS]

01:15:45   120 Hertz refresh which is kind of weird [TS]

01:15:47   because like in the old that the twelve [TS]

01:15:49   point nine inch the pencil was sampled [TS]

01:15:53   at 120 Hertz but the screen still [TS]

01:15:54   refreshed at 60 now they just synched it [TS]

01:15:56   off it's 120 everywhere and then finally [TS]

01:15:58   on the refresh rate front they advertise [TS]

01:16:00   the fact that you can do different [TS]

01:16:02   refresh breaks for video so if you're [TS]

01:16:04   watching a 48 you know frames per second [TS]

01:16:06   or 24 frames per second video the [TS]

01:16:08   display will refresh at that rate as [TS]

01:16:09   well which is kind of depressing for me [TS]

01:16:12   because I want the Apple TV to put out [TS]

01:16:13   24 frames in so I can watch on my big [TS]

01:16:16   fancy TV but I won't get the right frame [TS]

01:16:18   cadence so I guess I'll just watch [TS]

01:16:20   everything through Plex plex will [TS]

01:16:22   probably support 24 frames per second [TS]

01:16:23   cadence before the Apple TV does so I'll [TS]

01:16:25   just watch everything on my 10.5 inch [TS]

01:16:27   iPad pro and that will just teach [TS]

01:16:28   everyone you should be using Plex [TS]

01:16:30   I actually have I have real-time follow [TS]

01:16:33   up I am not kidding job it turns out [TS]

01:16:36   ladies and gentlemen that the ten point [TS]

01:16:38   five inch does have a headphone jack [TS]

01:16:40   apparently it is way way way in the [TS]

01:16:41   corner or so I'm being told so it is [TS]

01:16:44   supposedly there I could not find it wow [TS]

01:16:47   that is that is far and the coin isn't [TS]

01:16:49   on the bottom I don't know but yeah but [TS]

01:16:51   let's go it's on the top that's why I [TS]

01:16:53   couldn't find it that's it they always [TS]

01:16:55   been on top of you I was thinking oh [TS]

01:16:57   my bad so I'm curious I saw during the [TS]

01:16:59   keynote when they were talking about the [TS]

01:17:00   120 Hertz framerate now the new that now [TS]

01:17:03   but now that the actual display frame it [TS]

01:17:05   or at least it can be the I noticed a [TS]

01:17:07   few people who would probably have seen [TS]

01:17:10   it inside of Apple tweeting about how [TS]

01:17:12   that is like game-changing and you it's [TS]

01:17:15   just so amazing to have a 120 Hertz [TS]

01:17:17   refresh rate when in the hands-on we're [TS]

01:17:19   able to get an idea of that like how I [TS]

01:17:20   thought of that how did that see him it [TS]

01:17:22   did you notice it so I didn't I wasn't [TS]

01:17:24   using it I was there with Federico and I [TS]

01:17:26   naturally step back because I don't want [TS]

01:17:28   to lose an arm but but but I did see [TS]

01:17:31   Federico scrolling it and I don't know [TS]

01:17:34   if I would call it like earth-shattering [TS]

01:17:36   life-changing etc but it definitely [TS]

01:17:38   would not accomplish Evo effect on a lot [TS]

01:17:41   of this like it may be new people who [TS]

01:17:42   are into the video game scene know that [TS]

01:17:44   the debates about frame rate like a what [TS]

01:17:45   frame rate can you still see the [TS]

01:17:47   difference obviously every you know the [TS]

01:17:48   gamers like I could see 60 and 30s we [TS]

01:17:50   can all see 60 30 difference once you [TS]

01:17:52   get up above 60 70 80 90 1 you know [TS]

01:17:55   can you tell industry 120 in 110 pain [TS]

01:17:57   tolerance June 16 120 some people say [TS]

01:17:59   they can but if you double-blind to this [TS]

01:18:01   I bet a lot of people like 60 is around [TS]

01:18:03   the limit that most people can't tell [TS]

01:18:04   any faster not that I'm saying this [TS]

01:18:06   shouldn't be 120 it totally should [TS]

01:18:08   because especially since it syncs up [TS]

01:18:09   with it with the pencil input and it [TS]

01:18:10   just makes more sense from that [TS]

01:18:11   perspective but I don't know this is [TS]

01:18:14   another thing we'll have to research it [TS]

01:18:15   oh the frame rates over 60 can humans [TS]

01:18:18   tell the difference or just very special [TS]

01:18:19   people who have like gold plated audio [TS]

01:18:21   cables that the oxygen I wonder too like [TS]

01:18:25   maybe is it the kind of thing where like [TS]

01:18:27   maybe the framerate you might not be [TS]

01:18:30   able to tell exactly but maybe because [TS]

01:18:32   there would just be less latency between [TS]

01:18:34   when you move your finger and when the [TS]

01:18:36   screen has it yeah the framed up yeah [TS]

01:18:38   baby you notice that throughout that [TS]

01:18:39   number like 20 20 milliseconds that was [TS]

01:18:41   that post I didn't at this point years [TS]

01:18:44   ago I thought about yeah but no but [TS]

01:18:46   about refresh rate like remember that [TS]

01:18:47   was like a Microsoft Project they were [TS]

01:18:49   showing a different refresh rates they [TS]

01:18:50   have [TS]

01:18:51   calibrate it and say here's 100 [TS]

01:18:52   millisecond leg looks like and they [TS]

01:18:54   would crank it down down down to like [TS]

01:18:55   one millisecond and I think one was the [TS]

01:18:58   bottom and it was amazingly different [TS]

01:18:59   than like twenty or fifty or hundred so [TS]

01:19:01   20 is great but there's still Headroom [TS]

01:19:04   and yeah if if they're doing a hundred [TS]

01:19:06   twenty Hertz to get the latency down [TS]

01:19:07   that is a hundred percent worth it even [TS]

01:19:08   if nobody can tell the difference in the [TS]

01:19:09   frame rate because every little bit of [TS]

01:19:10   latency you will detect and it will feel [TS]

01:19:13   nicer so the hardware looks great it [TS]

01:19:15   seems to level the playing field one of [TS]

01:19:17   you guys had said earlier between the [TS]

01:19:19   different devices it has the iPhone [TS]

01:19:20   seven cameras which is great although if [TS]

01:19:22   you're taking pictures with your iPad [TS]

01:19:23   you're a big jerk especially the 12-inch [TS]

01:19:25   even come around on that yet [TS]

01:19:26   I've now become like you know that's [TS]

01:19:28   fine you I want to take pictures with [TS]

01:19:30   your iPad you want a portrait video were [TS]

01:19:32   you in high sierra earlier anyway so the [TS]

01:19:36   the capacities have been doubled which [TS]

01:19:38   is great it's good things all around it [TS]

01:19:40   looks really awesome and we should talk [TS]

01:19:42   about the updates in iOS 11 because holy [TS]

01:19:47   smokes they look great like I just [TS]

01:19:49   bought a MacBook adorable did I tell you [TS]

01:19:51   I'm excited [TS]

01:19:52   I just bought a MacBook adorable because [TS]

01:19:53   I don't use an iPad anymore but holy [TS]

01:19:55   crap these things look awesome like this [TS]

01:19:57   looks super super cool and I don't even [TS]

01:19:59   know where to begin [TS]

01:20:00   like the drag-and-drop just seems so [TS]

01:20:02   well thought-out in so well executed [TS]

01:20:04   from top to bottom I am genuinely deeply [TS]

01:20:07   deeply impressed with what they're [TS]

01:20:09   showing and I hope it works as well as [TS]

01:20:11   they've been demonstrating so these are [TS]

01:20:13   all this isn't like pro level features [TS]

01:20:14   to me which is exactly what we wanted [TS]

01:20:15   one like the pro level features that [TS]

01:20:17   that you know people who want to be more [TS]

01:20:19   productive who are already doing these [TS]

01:20:21   weird makeshift systems to do the tasks [TS]

01:20:23   that they can now accomplish much more [TS]

01:20:24   easily but kind of like drag and drop on [TS]

01:20:27   the Mac where we take a list for granted [TS]

01:20:29   I think most people don't do the [TS]

01:20:32   breath-holding maneuvers you know like [TS]

01:20:33   any any operation in the UI where you [TS]

01:20:35   initiate and you have like hold your [TS]

01:20:38   breath and then you can do other things [TS]

01:20:40   but you're like holding your holding [TS]

01:20:41   because if you let go then everything [TS]

01:20:43   just scatters to the four winds right [TS]

01:20:44   and so it's like that with drag and drop [TS]

01:20:46   where if you're if you're experienced [TS]

01:20:47   you know Mac user and the Mac OS 10 air [TS]

01:20:49   or you Band select a bunch of files in [TS]

01:20:52   the finder grab them slam your mouse [TS]

01:20:54   cursor into the corner to like slide [TS]

01:20:56   away and like you know or show Mission [TS]

01:20:59   Control or whatever and hover onto [TS]

01:21:01   another application and have it move to [TS]

01:21:02   the [TS]

01:21:02   fronting move over a window and it pops [TS]

01:21:03   forward like those type of operations [TS]

01:21:05   regular people don't do those most of [TS]

01:21:07   the time like they find another way to [TS]

01:21:08   do it they do a simple drag from one [TS]

01:21:10   location but they don't do grab a bunch [TS]

01:21:12   of stuff and then manipulate manipulate [TS]

01:21:14   manipulate drop into place because [TS]

01:21:16   there's so many places things can go [TS]

01:21:17   wrong and you can accidentally drop it [TS]

01:21:18   in the wrong place or whatever so these [TS]

01:21:20   are definitely pro features but almost [TS]

01:21:22   everything I was trapped by almost [TS]

01:21:23   everything that they were talking about [TS]

01:21:24   now look the rest of your UI is [TS]

01:21:26   responsive and your app gets the events [TS]

01:21:28   and so on and so forth are things that [TS]

01:21:29   we've taken for granted on the Mac [TS]

01:21:31   platform for literally decades yes of [TS]

01:21:34   course when you're initiating and [TS]

01:21:34   dragging the drag manager is going of [TS]

01:21:36   course you can do other things in the US [TS]

01:21:37   you can alt tab you can go hover over [TS]

01:21:39   windows and stuff like that and it's [TS]

01:21:40   kind of like Marco snarkily tweeted it [TS]

01:21:42   turns out desktop operating systems had [TS]

01:21:44   a bunch of good ideas after all didn't [TS]

01:21:45   they yeah it's like this is the future [TS]

01:21:47   of computing every one thing I've had [TS]

01:21:49   the future computing well the future [TS]

01:21:50   computing so far everyone's now [TS]

01:21:51   celebrating we've got a huge step [TS]

01:21:53   forward by adding a whole bunch of stuff [TS]

01:21:55   from the past of computing but they do [TS]

01:21:57   have I mean the advantage they have now [TS]

01:21:58   I think and they demoed it again so I [TS]

01:21:59   was talking about in last show how a [TS]

01:22:01   sort of a grabber then pop forward stuff [TS]

01:22:03   is actually better on a big screen you [TS]

01:22:04   have a second hand whereas you don't [TS]

01:22:06   have a second mouse that you can grab [TS]

01:22:07   onto it so now you grab a bunch of [TS]

01:22:08   things and your second hand can fully [TS]

01:22:10   manipulate the UI to do whatever you [TS]

01:22:12   want to do to get to the point where you [TS]

01:22:14   can drop it so I think it is very [TS]

01:22:16   impressive and except it's what we were [TS]

01:22:17   looking for per level features and as [TS]

01:22:19   Casey said the API I mean this is [TS]

01:22:21   clearly an API created by a company that [TS]

01:22:23   has done like three different drag [TS]

01:22:24   managers over the past several decades [TS]

01:22:26   like they know what they're doing and [TS]

01:22:27   building it into all the default classes [TS]

01:22:29   and especially this most people do use [TS]

01:22:31   the default classes on iOS instead of [TS]

01:22:32   rolling their own because the default [TS]

01:22:33   classes are really good means like they [TS]

01:22:35   can do that demo like look I can drive [TS]

01:22:37   this text nip into slack and slack has [TS]

01:22:38   no idea what the help the drag manager [TS]

01:22:40   is because they use standard controls it [TS]

01:22:41   just works it was it was super super [TS]

01:22:43   impressive and you know we could [TS]

01:22:45   probably go through every single one of [TS]

01:22:46   these things line by line but we want to [TS]

01:22:48   leave here today now the dragon drop [TS]

01:22:50   looks great I was super impressed by all [TS]

01:22:53   of it and I'm really excited to try [TS]

01:22:56   using all this stuff you know I didn't [TS]

01:22:58   really have time in the hands-on area [TS]

01:22:59   I'm sure all of you are probably a lot [TS]

01:23:02   of you anyway are silly enough to run a [TS]

01:23:03   beta Yvonne what I've had you going to [TS]

01:23:05   try I have my iPad Mini I was using it [TS]

01:23:07   all day long thank you very much it's [TS]

01:23:09   tit can it do a lot of this stuff I [TS]

01:23:10   honestly don't know but to that end the [TS]

01:23:13   iOS 11 does support like [TS]

01:23:15   anyway way back in terms of Hardman [TS]

01:23:16   which was impressive I'm sure some of [TS]

01:23:18   the stuff is like pro only or there's [TS]

01:23:19   limits like maybe you can't do like it [TS]

01:23:21   probably does have enough RAM to have [TS]

01:23:22   all the apps on you know I'm sure [TS]

01:23:24   there's different for a brief second [TS]

01:23:25   when they said and we're doubling the [TS]

01:23:26   memory for a brief second I said really [TS]

01:23:28   they're gonna have eight gigs of RAM oh [TS]

01:23:29   never seriously so can we get a ruling [TS]

01:23:33   though again I haven't played with this [TS]

01:23:35   but it appears as though you can do some [TS]

01:23:38   sort of like floaty sort of sidebar ii [TS]

01:23:40   thing in addition to side by side apps [TS]

01:23:43   are we in windowing at this point like [TS]

01:23:45   have we crossed that that uncanny valley [TS]

01:23:47   into windowing or never gonna call it [TS]

01:23:49   that right but are we there is a CLE a [TS]

01:23:51   simplified version of window and yeah [TS]

01:23:53   it's exactly you just can't define this [TS]

01:23:55   sizes it's a weird limited tiling window [TS]

01:23:58   manager yeah right which which I think [TS]

01:24:00   is appropriate for the form factor [TS]

01:24:01   because people there's no there's no [TS]

01:24:03   controls on windows there's no way to [TS]

01:24:04   resize them rearrange them but they're [TS]

01:24:06   they're are not shying away from there's [TS]

01:24:08   a rectangle that belongs to another app [TS]

01:24:10   on top of a rectangle that belongs to a [TS]

01:24:11   different app and they're you know [TS]

01:24:13   they're they're embracing that although [TS]

01:24:15   I'm not quite sure like you mentioned [TS]

01:24:16   that iOS 11 would be about rounded [TS]

01:24:18   rectangles floating over things sure [TS]

01:24:19   enough as a lot of rounded rectangles [TS]

01:24:21   floating over things in this what [TS]

01:24:22   benefit do we get I guess they have to [TS]

01:24:25   show that it is not in split view like [TS]

01:24:26   they're wasting axles to show you the [TS]

01:24:28   little border thing around I don't know [TS]

01:24:30   but I'm sure it will work a lot better [TS]

01:24:32   than the current system or especially in [TS]

01:24:34   fact you can go to the multitasking [TS]

01:24:35   switcher and see all your different I [TS]

01:24:37   don't know the callings of spaces or [TS]

01:24:38   whatever that seems like a big [TS]

01:24:39   improvement over the current terrible [TS]

01:24:41   multitasking switcher and it's a hard [TS]

01:24:43   thing to design because iOS apps are [TS]

01:24:46   designed like there's no window borders [TS]

01:24:47   in iOS there's no title bars there's no [TS]

01:24:50   window chrome i OS apps are designed to [TS]

01:24:53   be fullscreen and so and most of the [TS]

01:24:56   time in use that's what they are so it [TS]

01:24:58   to design a feature like this in the OS [TS]

01:25:00   it's it's actually not trivial to have [TS]

01:25:02   visual design that makes sense where you [TS]

01:25:04   where the borders of apps actually look [TS]

01:25:06   reasonable and are easy to see that they [TS]

01:25:08   are borders but doesn't look like overly [TS]

01:25:11   skeuomorphic with big shadows and it's [TS]

01:25:13   it's it's a hard problem to solve they [TS]

01:25:14   did it in iOS 9s multitasking they did [TS]

01:25:17   use like the big border lines they would [TS]

01:25:19   drag around everything and a days I [TS]

01:25:20   think they still have a similar one for [TS]

01:25:22   like the side-by-side but now they have [TS]

01:25:24   the floatover and they still have [TS]

01:25:26   picture-in-picture which is a little [TS]

01:25:27   around [TS]

01:25:28   things a whole bunch of different [TS]

01:25:29   options that now that they're it's gonna [TS]

01:25:31   be a little confusing getting used to [TS]

01:25:32   all this stuff but the best thing about [TS]

01:25:35   this like I'm not looking at any of the [TS]

01:25:37   particular details of this and saying oh [TS]

01:25:40   that's that's great or that's terrible [TS]

01:25:42   I'm just glad that they have done [TS]

01:25:43   something here you know they have all [TS]

01:25:45   summer to work out the minor kinks and [TS]

01:25:47   they're going to have the next couple of [TS]

01:25:48   years hopefully to work out any bigger [TS]

01:25:49   ones in different updates but the fact [TS]

01:25:52   that they have finally for iPad people [TS]

01:25:55   if this is like the biggest final ever [TS]

01:25:56   like they finally take in the system [TS]

01:25:59   that they started in a really basic way [TS]

01:26:02   two years ago and have let basically [TS]

01:26:05   unchanged since they have finally given [TS]

01:26:07   it like they flesh it out they've given [TS]

01:26:08   it more they've indicated not only by [TS]

01:26:11   you know not only have they add missed [TS]

01:26:12   features but they now also indicated to [TS]

01:26:15   iPad pro users that this is this is a [TS]

01:26:18   kind of thing that we intend to keep [TS]

01:26:19   moving forward that we're not done that [TS]

01:26:21   what you got with iOS on isn't it [TS]

01:26:22   forever like we're going to keep moving [TS]

01:26:24   this forward and in so many ways they [TS]

01:26:27   they are making the iPad like a Mac and [TS]

01:26:30   they're you know they're they're never [TS]

01:26:31   going to really say that and they're [TS]

01:26:34   they're doing like you know new edited [TS]

01:26:35   versions of these features of them with [TS]

01:26:37   20 years of you know wisdom accumulated [TS]

01:26:40   and things of that but they're they [TS]

01:26:41   really are making this more and more Mac [TS]

01:26:43   like and it seems like for all of iOS [TS]

01:26:47   users talking about how much they hate [TS]

01:26:49   using Mac's it seems like what they [TS]

01:26:50   wanted was the I've had to become more [TS]

01:26:52   like the Mac okay so we should move on [TS]

01:26:54   before we go and in so anyway so it does [TS]

01:26:58   look really great I'm really excited [TS]

01:26:59   about it there's a bunch of other stuff [TS]

01:27:01   that we're gonna kind of have to gloss [TS]

01:27:02   over because I think before we go we [TS]

01:27:04   should definitely talk about the end of [TS]

01:27:06   the keynote in music so before we move [TS]

01:27:09   on are there any other I've had thoughts [TS]

01:27:11   that we just cannot resist talking about [TS]

01:27:13   right now okay good [TS]

01:27:13   quick sing notes and promised thumbs up [TS]

01:27:16   like notes improvement steel Craig like [TS]

01:27:17   I'm a big notes user I like notes a lot [TS]

01:27:19   and as long as it reliably syncs which [TS]

01:27:21   is about most of the time it is it is [TS]

01:27:24   wonderful I really enjoy it [TS]

01:27:26   it's funny that notes has kind of become [TS]

01:27:28   like the center of Apple sure locking [TS]

01:27:31   things these days it's like notes I [TS]

01:27:34   think has the record for like the most [TS]

01:27:35   app types it has I wonder if s [TS]

01:27:37   discoverable though like the whole thing [TS]

01:27:39   you can scan documents [TS]

01:27:40   one's going to thank the launch notes to [TS]

01:27:41   do that if you already know it does it [TS]

01:27:42   it's fine and once you learn maybe but [TS]

01:27:44   it doesn't seem particularly [TS]

01:27:44   discoverable because it's not it's not [TS]

01:27:46   the entry point for yeah it is kind of [TS]

01:27:49   like a junk drawer of features but if [TS]

01:27:51   you know they're there it's a really [TS]

01:27:52   great app and it has a few rough edges [TS]

01:27:55   but overall it's pretty great so very [TS]

01:27:57   happy to see that all the handwriting [TS]

01:27:59   stuff with a pencil like that's that's a [TS]

01:28:00   lot of major enhancements for both iPad [TS]

01:28:03   note-taking in general and also just the [TS]

01:28:05   Notes app itself that's pretty cool that [TS]

01:28:07   leaves a big thumbs up for me did we [TS]

01:28:09   ever find out of the pencil can still [TS]

01:28:10   manipulate the UI all right yes good [TS]

01:28:13   answer is yes it can well there's a [TS]

01:28:15   switch I believe it I don't know I don't [TS]

01:28:16   order it was but there certainly seems [TS]

01:28:18   to be a switch that lets you either [TS]

01:28:19   manipulate everything or just drawing [TS]

01:28:20   weird it's so much feedback oh yeah I [TS]

01:28:22   know um six week all follow up yeah [TS]

01:28:25   nobody surprised so just just so you're [TS]

01:28:27   aware no the iPads look great iOS 11 [TS]

01:28:30   genuinely genuinely looks awesome I'm [TS]

01:28:31   really stoked so one last thing not one [TS]

01:28:34   more thing but one this thing that was a [TS]

01:28:36   little yeah I think it was respectful I [TS]

01:28:39   approve it oh okay it's been decided in [TS]

01:28:41   his been decided all right [TS]

01:28:44   I'll allow it the best part is one last [TS]

01:28:46   thing music and the whole crowd goes I [TS]

01:28:48   don't know why they went up the people [TS]

01:28:51   who went obviously didn't listen to the [TS]

01:28:52   last couple episodes of AGB where of [TS]

01:28:54   course the thing was gonna be about [TS]

01:28:56   music is just question of what they [TS]

01:28:57   chose to emphasize I think all the way [TS]

01:28:59   through the home pod thing people like [TS]

01:29:00   so this is just music or whatever and at [TS]

01:29:02   the end they came in with the big slide [TS]

01:29:04   that said no it's what you think it is [TS]

01:29:05   though this would be this would be for [TS]

01:29:07   was even announced like this is like the [TS]

01:29:08   one more thing and we're all expecting a [TS]

01:29:10   series speaker and then and they say [TS]

01:29:12   music well court well how happy never [TS]

01:29:14   ties the series speaker what are you [TS]

01:29:15   play on your series speaker podcast I [TS]

01:29:17   mean that's crazy done merrily done [TS]

01:29:19   apparently you can because they didn't [TS]

01:29:21   interfere your app do you know the [TS]

01:29:22   answer that by the way we were asking [TS]

01:29:24   that before Marcus why you need to come [TS]

01:29:25   to the conference with so we can ask you [TS]

01:29:26   these questions about the home pod can [TS]

01:29:29   play podcasts can it only played them if [TS]

01:29:31   you are subscribed to them in the Apple [TS]

01:29:32   podcast app we don't know at all I don't [TS]

01:29:34   think anybody knows that yet if that's [TS]

01:29:36   true so so basic so first of all credit [TS]

01:29:39   to Apple for as far as I remember not [TS]

01:29:41   having an awkward music demo this year [TS]

01:29:44   that's true that's great [TS]

01:29:47   the times they are a-changin yeah well [TS]

01:29:50   and also I'm gonna count that thing [TS]

01:29:52   where they showed the waveforms coming [TS]

01:29:53   out of the speakers they were supposed [TS]

01:29:55   to illustrate something to us and always [TS]

01:29:59   at least no one realized yeah we didn't [TS]

01:30:01   see Eddy Cue dance we didn't whoever [TS]

01:30:02   like you know we act like reset all the [TS]

01:30:04   bets for the shirt button thing like it [TS]

01:30:06   so overall it nicely omitted from the [TS]

01:30:08   keynote also I was happy to see in this [TS]

01:30:12   keynote not a heavy reliance on videos [TS]

01:30:15   like there were some but I think it was [TS]

01:30:17   a healthy amount no time no time for [TS]

01:30:18   videos got to talk fast and they've [TS]

01:30:20   relied of them a little bit too much in [TS]

01:30:21   the past that was good to see but one [TS]

01:30:23   last thing Apple music boba and then [TS]

01:30:25   okay now Siri speaker and it's called [TS]

01:30:27   home pod I'm not this listen y'all got [TS]

01:30:32   on board with MacBook which i think is a [TS]

01:30:33   worse name than home pod home pod will [TS]

01:30:35   be fine we will be so used to it in like [TS]

01:30:38   three months [TS]

01:30:38   I don't think home pod is bad me I don't [TS]

01:30:40   know maybe I just don't use to apples [TS]

01:30:42   bad names for things but this is hi [TS]

01:30:44   Sierra [TS]

01:30:44   well see what would you have called it [TS]

01:30:46   would you call it series speaker that's [TS]

01:30:47   worse than home pod I don't know I [TS]

01:30:50   haven't put a lot of thought into it [TS]

01:30:51   actually maybe I mean there has to be [TS]

01:30:52   that can't possibly be the best name [TS]

01:30:55   they could have used I think I think [TS]

01:30:56   it's okay I think I think it's fine but [TS]

01:30:58   anyway so they said basically you can [TS]

01:31:00   have a smart speaker or you can have [TS]

01:31:02   what was the other thing I was that [TS]

01:31:04   excellent and that was by the way like [TS]

01:31:05   shock of to me I think one of the [TS]

01:31:07   biggest shocks is they actually put a so [TS]

01:31:09   - and an Amazon echo in the city I erase [TS]

01:31:12   the word Sonos like sometimes they show [TS]

01:31:13   a device but erase the branding no no [TS]

01:31:15   they were ice cold like here's these two [TS]

01:31:17   products that suck in these ways I was [TS]

01:31:20   like they were they pulled no punches on [TS]

01:31:23   that that was that was quite interesting [TS]

01:31:24   to see yeah and you know and I think [TS]

01:31:26   that what they were saying was basically [TS]

01:31:29   the market's opinion of these things [TS]

01:31:30   because basically as Sonos has great [TS]

01:31:32   sound but the downsides to it are it's [TS]

01:31:34   pretty expensive and it doesn't have any [TS]

01:31:36   kind of voice control and then Amazon [TS]

01:31:38   echo has crap sound but it's pretty [TS]

01:31:42   convenient and it has pretty good voice [TS]

01:31:43   control and doesn't have any multi room [TS]

01:31:45   stuff like sono stuff and so by them [TS]

01:31:47   coming in with the home pod and and [TS]

01:31:50   adding and what they're basically doing [TS]

01:31:53   is they're basically attacking Sonos [TS]

01:31:54   head-on with a little bit of Siri or [TS]

01:31:57   Amazon echo attacking like this is [TS]

01:31:59   really I think the people at sono should [TS]

01:32:01   be more upset by this than the people at [TS]

01:32:02   Amazon because they they're focusing [TS]

01:32:05   strongly on music for lots of reasons [TS]

01:32:08   probably right now but they're focusing [TS]

01:32:11   very strongly on music as far as I can [TS]

01:32:12   tell I did they say is there going to be [TS]

01:32:15   any kind of Siri kit integration with it [TS]

01:32:17   we know that that was another relation [TS]

01:32:20   where the Siri thing was weird because [TS]

01:32:22   they so so much emphasis on music which [TS]

01:32:25   i think is smart to the place to the [TS]

01:32:26   strengths but so little emphasis on [TS]

01:32:28   talking to the thing like there was one [TS]

01:32:30   slide you can talk to it and ask this a [TS]

01:32:32   bunch of stuff yadda yadda yadda know [TS]

01:32:33   third it was way better we promise yet [TS]

01:32:35   wink nope no screen no apps no developer [TS]

01:32:38   story as far as I could see yeah I was [TS]

01:32:40   very surprised to see it didn't have a [TS]

01:32:41   screen like now that we're seeing what's [TS]

01:32:43   coming out from Amazon and then [TS]

01:32:44   presumably the next Google air freshener [TS]

01:32:46   will have one too like there's there's a [TS]

01:32:49   lot of value I think I mean I haven't [TS]

01:32:51   tried these things yet with the screen [TS]

01:32:52   but I think there's a lot of value to [TS]

01:32:53   having a screen on a device that's like [TS]

01:32:55   a home assistant thing like if you like [TS]

01:32:57   if you look at the way you know the the [TS]

01:32:59   home pod seems to be designed for your [TS]

01:33:01   living room and in that kind of context [TS]

01:33:03   I can see a screen being less useful [TS]

01:33:05   because your obably not gonna be using [TS]

01:33:05   it as like a timer and stuff but for the [TS]

01:33:08   kitchen which is where the echo has [TS]

01:33:09   really shown to be very useful you [TS]

01:33:11   really a scream would be nice to see [TS]

01:33:13   things like your timer statuses and the [TS]

01:33:15   current weather as you're walking by in [TS]

01:33:16   the morning and stuff like that so to [TS]

01:33:18   not have that kind of focus and to be [TS]

01:33:21   coming in at a premium price point [TS]

01:33:23   coming at 350 dollars that's a pretty [TS]

01:33:26   pretty healthy price point there they're [TS]

01:33:28   really attacking Sonos mostly because so [TS]

01:33:32   no speakers start at about two or three [TS]

01:33:33   hundred bucks and then they go up you [TS]

01:33:35   know from there I I don't know how well [TS]

01:33:39   this is going to sell I think the the [TS]

01:33:43   tech press is probably going to rake [TS]

01:33:44   them over the coals for the price [TS]

01:33:45   compared to your competitors I'm [TS]

01:33:47   probably going to buy one you're [TS]

01:33:49   probably gonna make fun of me but I [TS]

01:33:51   don't know if we're all gonna buy one [TS]

01:33:52   case I gonna buy one I said why are you [TS]

01:33:54   so calm being you're right but why are [TS]

01:33:56   you so confident about this [TS]

01:33:57   listen I saw that on this grandma you [TS]

01:33:59   are absolutely like the marketing pitch [TS]

01:34:01   works on you them pitching and pitching [TS]

01:34:04   is a music thing you're like well I [TS]

01:34:05   don't want one of those cylinders do I [TS]

01:34:06   talk to but this is just an awesome the [TS]

01:34:07   way to play music and so you're gonna [TS]

01:34:09   get one but it doesn't have that rich [TS]

01:34:11   vinyl no nevermind oh wait no it does [TS]

01:34:14   have that warm that I'm used to you know [TS]

01:34:16   it does look really good and I probably [TS]

01:34:17   will buy one to be honest with you no I [TS]

01:34:20   think it looked awesome I think that I [TS]

01:34:22   saw one in the hands-on area very [TS]

01:34:24   briefly we did not hear it but we saw [TS]

01:34:26   both the black and the white they both [TS]

01:34:28   look great John made a very funny [TS]

01:34:29   comment though that there's you know [TS]

01:34:31   this not insignificant cable coming out [TS]

01:34:33   of the back of this thing and in the [TS]

01:34:34   Apple hands-on area there's a hole in [TS]

01:34:35   the table that it goes through which is [TS]

01:34:37   super convenient for Apple and so it's [TS]

01:34:40   not going to be quite so beautiful in [TS]

01:34:43   into bespoke in it I really think our [TS]

01:34:45   cable I like the power cable to your Mac [TS]

01:34:48   like a big like cylindrical thing it's [TS]

01:34:49   less like just a little you know thing [TS]

01:34:51   with the wall board or whatever anyway I [TS]

01:34:52   think it'll be fine it's also a little [TS]

01:34:54   bit chunkier it is chunkier than me than [TS]

01:34:56   the Google home like it it looks it [TS]

01:34:59   looks fat well there's there's no great [TS]

01:35:02   way to make a tiny speaker sound good so [TS]

01:35:06   like I don't mind it getting a little [TS]

01:35:07   bit bigger like the Sonos play:1 they're [TS]

01:35:08   smaller speaker is chunkier than the [TS]

01:35:11   echo it's shorter but fatter and I think [TS]

01:35:13   it's great like this one was play one [TS]

01:35:14   sounds awesome [TS]

01:35:15   so if and a lot of Apple's features with [TS]

01:35:17   measuring the room response and [TS]

01:35:19   everything else that that's that's a lot [TS]

01:35:21   of sometimes a playbook for years but [TS]

01:35:23   it'll know it's probably going to sound [TS]

01:35:25   great right yeah in it it appears as [TS]

01:35:28   though it's going to sound phenomenal [TS]

01:35:29   and I am really anxious to hear one and [TS]

01:35:32   try one out and I don't know that I [TS]

01:35:35   necessarily have a place in my home that [TS]

01:35:38   I am in desperate need of a new speaker [TS]

01:35:40   but that being said this is appealing [TS]

01:35:43   enough to me just in principle and I [TS]

01:35:45   trust Apple 2 of all things understand [TS]

01:35:48   how to make music sound good [TS]

01:35:50   that to me I'm like well ok this is an [TS]

01:35:52   insta boy it's gonna have to happen the [TS]

01:35:53   same interim price is the iPod high-five [TS]

01:35:55   to resolve it every 49 it turns out yeah [TS]

01:35:58   and and honestly like I think it is [TS]

01:36:00   probably going to be a good product but [TS]

01:36:02   I do have concerns first of all that is [TS]

01:36:05   pretty expensive for this market again [TS]

01:36:06   they're they're really going after Sonos [TS]

01:36:08   not the echo the echo and [TS]

01:36:10   we're always going to be cheaper than [TS]

01:36:11   this and I don't see Apple playing like [TS]

01:36:14   a race to the bottom price game on this [TS]

01:36:15   product I see this being a nice profit [TS]

01:36:17   Center for them and to make high-end [TS]

01:36:18   stuff only and they by positioning [TS]

01:36:20   themselves pretty much only against [TS]

01:36:22   Sonos then they kind of avoid like [TS]

01:36:24   having to compete in like the super low [TS]

01:36:26   March and stuff but you know they're [TS]

01:36:28   going to be better on privacy than [TS]

01:36:29   Amazon and Google they you know as [TS]

01:36:31   particular sound quality's gonna be [TS]

01:36:33   great I think overall many of us are [TS]

01:36:36   going to have these but it's gonna be [TS]

01:36:39   market size wise more like the airport [TS]

01:36:42   extreme than like you know the Apple TV [TS]

01:36:46   well they kind of like so the marketing [TS]

01:36:48   push was for music right but if you look [TS]

01:36:49   at the hardware it's got a whole bunch [TS]

01:36:51   of microphones in it like it is it is [TS]

01:36:53   well-equipped hardware wise to do [TS]

01:36:56   everything that the echo does animate as [TS]

01:36:59   well I mean it's powered by an iPhone [TS]

01:37:01   process is not as powerful as a agency [TS]

01:37:04   like still though so because the [TS]

01:37:07   hardware is welcome to do that like they [TS]

01:37:08   didn't emphasize it and we all just [TS]

01:37:09   assume it will be worse at answering [TS]

01:37:12   your questions than the echo and the [TS]

01:37:14   Google things which is that why they're [TS]

01:37:16   wise not to emphasize it but say many [TS]

01:37:18   years pass and they get better at that [TS]

01:37:19   part there's no reason they can't make a [TS]

01:37:21   cheaper model if they decide to compete [TS]

01:37:23   on price tone down the speaker's make [TS]

01:37:25   the one that is focused more on [TS]

01:37:27   answering your questions and being a [TS]

01:37:28   voice assistant and less on playing [TS]

01:37:31   music with high fidelity and then then [TS]

01:37:32   they're right in that market right it's [TS]

01:37:34   just a question of like as they listed [TS]

01:37:35   on that big thing all the things you can [TS]

01:37:36   do you can set timers have reminders [TS]

01:37:38   asking questions and just like all the [TS]

01:37:41   things they said it can do are the [TS]

01:37:42   things that Google home and Amazon echo [TS]

01:37:44   do we just all assume that Apple does [TS]

01:37:46   them worse and them not demoing that at [TS]

01:37:49   all it doesn't help us get you know like [TS]

01:37:51   they didn't even try to show off or say [TS]

01:37:52   like they didn't touch it at all it's [TS]

01:37:54   you would be forgiven for thinking that [TS]

01:37:56   this thing doesn't do anything except [TS]

01:37:58   for play music but it does everything [TS]

01:37:59   that all the other devices do so I think [TS]

01:38:02   they have left the door open to come [TS]

01:38:04   after Google home and Amazon whenever [TS]

01:38:06   the heck they can get their act together [TS]

01:38:08   to actually be competitive that and who [TS]

01:38:10   knows maybe they're already competitive [TS]

01:38:11   that error we don't know they never even [TS]

01:38:13   demoed never talked about it was just a [TS]

01:38:14   word cloud I mean the impression I guess [TS]

01:38:16   is that this is a this is still in a [TS]

01:38:17   very early stage of development that [TS]

01:38:19   like I mean it's not it isn't even [TS]

01:38:20   coming out until December which raises [TS]

01:38:22   the question of if the [TS]

01:38:24   this is a product that has apparently no [TS]

01:38:26   developer support no thing that anybody [TS]

01:38:29   can do between now and when it comes out [TS]

01:38:31   and there's going to be a September [TS]

01:38:33   event presumably where they announced [TS]

01:38:34   new iPhone stuff why did they announce [TS]

01:38:36   this now that's interesting point I [TS]

01:38:38   didn't think about they should have [TS]

01:38:39   opened up the hardware saves anything [TS]

01:38:40   inside there it's just empty shell you [TS]

01:38:43   can look at the hardware and it had [TS]

01:38:44   little lights like they do the same [TS]

01:38:45   thing as a Google home with the colored [TS]

01:38:46   LEDs on the top showing through with the [TS]

01:38:48   Siri logo we type thing so it and it [TS]

01:38:50   looked like good it looked like finished [TS]

01:38:53   ish hardware yeah but overall let's [TS]

01:38:56   let's kind of wrap this up impressions [TS]

01:38:58   of the keynote I thought it was really [TS]

01:39:00   good I'm a little concerned it's too [TS]

01:39:03   strong a word but I feel like it it was [TS]

01:39:05   a lot of catch up or like things that we [TS]

01:39:08   may be expected to happen a long time [TS]

01:39:10   ago particularly with like the the iPad [TS]

01:39:12   productivity enhancements that said it [TS]

01:39:14   was still a very impressive keynote and [TS]

01:39:17   we got hardware that I would have told [TS]

01:39:19   you whereas I think I said to somebody [TS]

01:39:21   else we're sitting the key no there's no [TS]

01:39:22   way we're gonna get a whole bunch of [TS]

01:39:23   hardware today I finally gave Apple a [TS]

01:39:26   bunch of my money which is really [TS]

01:39:27   exciting sort of and and so that we got [TS]

01:39:31   that we got a lot of hardware we got [TS]

01:39:32   iPads we got Mac's the the playing field [TS]

01:39:35   has been leveled within each of these [TS]

01:39:36   lines for the most part you know there's [TS]

01:39:37   it's a level playing field in the iPad [TS]

01:39:38   world [TS]

01:39:39   sorry mini it's a level playing field in [TS]

01:39:41   the Mac world sorry iPad air and Manny [TS]

01:39:43   yet and yet I mean it all at all I [TS]

01:39:47   thought it was pretty good but what did [TS]

01:39:49   what did the two of you think would [TS]

01:39:50   start with you John you said it was like [TS]

01:39:52   a lot of ketchup I would just change the [TS]

01:39:54   emphasis it was a lot of ketchup like [TS]

01:39:56   last i show marco was listening all the [TS]

01:39:59   things that he wanted like they can't do [TS]

01:40:00   all those things and the emphasis may [TS]

01:40:02   have been different in the products it [TS]

01:40:03   but they did almost all those things [TS]

01:40:06   they should committee revised all the [TS]

01:40:08   hardware that we thought they could [TS]

01:40:09   possibly revised all that this is what i [TS]

01:40:11   thought was great about it i think was a [TS]

01:40:12   really smart move was the stuff that [TS]

01:40:14   wasn't ready they announced that anyway [TS]

01:40:16   cuz what if we you know it's like it's [TS]

01:40:18   fine it's such a rush to say okay i can [TS]

01:40:20   order that today but that's going to be [TS]

01:40:22   december but that's going to be later in [TS]

01:40:23   the fall it's like you don't care just [TS]

01:40:24   show me all the cool new things think [TS]

01:40:26   that was super smart and i came away [TS]

01:40:28   thinking this was a very impressive [TS]

01:40:30   keynote where they everything they [TS]

01:40:32   showed was like met expectations at the [TS]

01:40:35   very least and [TS]

01:40:37   I was you know I was excited to see the [TS]

01:40:38   you know the iMac Pro and stuff like [TS]

01:40:40   this I don't care when it's shipping and [TS]

01:40:41   just you know show it to me like some [TS]

01:40:44   I'm sup what do you think Marco so I [TS]

01:40:47   think you know Tim Cook opened it by [TS]

01:40:50   saying this is going to be the biggest [TS]

01:40:52   and best W of DC ever and I don't think [TS]

01:40:55   it was I think that was that was setting [TS]

01:40:57   it a little bit too high I think the one [TS]

01:40:58   couple years ago when switch was [TS]

01:41:00   announced was probably the biggest and [TS]

01:41:01   best abuse he ever there's to date but I [TS]

01:41:04   do think overall this was pretty packed [TS]

01:41:07   full of good stuff and a lot of the [TS]

01:41:09   stuff we you know we're not going to [TS]

01:41:10   develop an understanding and [TS]

01:41:12   appreciation of a lot of it until we get [TS]

01:41:13   to use it for a while or until it [TS]

01:41:15   launches to the public so you know we [TS]

01:41:17   all have to actually use the new you [TS]

01:41:19   know multitasking and productivity and [TS]

01:41:20   files type things we have to write apps [TS]

01:41:22   against this stuff we have to wait for [TS]

01:41:23   the apps that we use to get updated to [TS]

01:41:25   actually enjoy and use and get to see a [TS]

01:41:27   lot of the stuff we have to wait for the [TS]

01:41:29   App Store launch until presumably the [TS]

01:41:31   fall before we get you know any benefit [TS]

01:41:32   from that so there's a lot of em we have [TS]

01:41:35   to wait until quote December but in [TS]

01:41:37   Apple province that probably means March [TS]

01:41:39   before you can actually get one so you [TS]

01:41:42   know we have to wait until next spring [TS]

01:41:44   presumably before we can actually see [TS]

01:41:46   the home pod god I still I almost said [TS]

01:41:49   Series B Goethe it's fine you'll be fine [TS]

01:41:51   two weeks you'll be fine [TS]

01:41:53   exactly so like you know we have to wait [TS]

01:41:54   to see that we have to wait to see the [TS]

01:41:56   iMac Pro and then later on the Mac Pro [TS]

01:41:58   so there's a lot of like just wait this [TS]

01:42:01   is going to be awesome but they've [TS]

01:42:02   backed it up with enough actual output [TS]

01:42:05   and you know solid announcements and you [TS]

01:42:07   know firm commitments to things and [TS]

01:42:09   actual changes to stuff that overall I [TS]

01:42:12   think this is pretty cool there are [TS]

01:42:13   certainly areas that I'm concerned about [TS]

01:42:15   like the TV and the watch and message is [TS]

01:42:17   something that like there's areas that [TS]

01:42:18   are like not as you know have been kind [TS]

01:42:21   of had slow years and they didn't do [TS]

01:42:23   everything I wanted them to do in [TS]

01:42:24   certain things but I like Sirikit but [TS]

01:42:27   overall I think it's pretty good and I [TS]

01:42:29   enjoyed the presentation itself as I [TS]

01:42:31   said earlier like you know the video [TS]

01:42:32   stuff and the you know the not having [TS]

01:42:34   Apple music presentation the overall I [TS]

01:42:37   think pretty good WDC you know it [TS]

01:42:40   certainly in like the the top half maybe [TS]

01:42:42   the top quarter if not number one ever [TS]

01:42:45   yeah I thought it was really well done [TS]

01:42:47   so at this point I don't know what we're [TS]

01:42:49   going to [TS]

01:42:50   because we didn't discuss this in [TS]

01:42:51   advance because it's the accent one has [TS]

01:42:53   to do his thing alright thanks a lot to [TS]

01:42:56   our three sponsors this week Squarespace [TS]

01:42:58   audible and fracture and we will see you [TS]

01:43:00   next week [TS]

01:43:02   gotcha now the show is over [TS]

01:43:05   they didn't even mean to be here as it [TS]

01:43:09   was accidental it was accidental [TS]

01:43:14   John didn't do any research Marco and [TS]

01:43:17   Casey wouldn't let [TS]

01:43:19   cuz it was accidental it was accidental [TS]

01:43:23   but you can find the show notes at 80 [TS]

01:43:27   feet down and enter Twitter [TS]

01:43:32   you can fall down MCAS dyo eyah Estevez [TS]

01:43:39   Casillas MK r 0 a.m. GMT Marco Arment [TS]

01:43:46   and I are [TS]

01:43:57   [Music] [TS]

01:43:58   ten [TS]

01:44:00   Casso [TS]

01:44:02   well [TS]

01:44:04   [Applause] [TS]

01:44:08   [Music] [TS]

01:44:10   I think probably we will probably skip [TS]

01:44:14   it after show and God knows we're going [TS]

01:44:15   to do about that was exactly as awkward [TS]

01:44:17   and awesome as I told me if you had told [TS]

01:44:21   me back in like 2012 when I'm listening [TS]

01:44:23   to these two and you told me that not [TS]

01:44:26   only would I be up on stage with these [TS]

01:44:27   two but all of you amazing wonderful [TS]

01:44:30   people would come to see us and sing us [TS]

01:44:33   our song like what a weird world we live [TS]

01:44:36   in and I know I speak for the two of [TS]

01:44:38   these guys that we are so deeply deeply [TS]

01:44:40   grateful for you guys coming out and it [TS]

01:44:42   really means a ton to all of us and I [TS]

01:44:44   hope you enjoy the rest of your week if [TS]

01:44:46   you're at any of the wonderful [TS]

01:44:47   conferences including but not limited to [TS]

01:44:49   all comps so thank you so much to all [TS]

01:44:50   compher for having us come in can we [TS]

01:44:52   give them a big round of applause [TS]

01:44:55   [Applause] [TS]

01:45:00   as usual with the exception Marco John [TS]

01:45:03   and I just kind of showed up did our [TS]

01:45:04   thing and we're going to go sit but not [TS]

01:45:06   really you guys thank you so much for [TS]

01:45:07   coming [TS]

01:45:08   also big nice announcement all con [TS]

01:45:10   raised a whole bunch of money for app [TS]

01:45:12   camp for girls over the last couple days [TS]

01:45:14   [Applause] [TS]

01:45:20   the concert by james Dempsey and the [TS]

01:45:22   breakpoints I've seen them it's a really [TS]

01:45:24   good show highly recommended there's [TS]

01:45:26   still tickets left and the benefits of [TS]

01:45:27   that go [TS]

01:45:28   the proceeds that go to AB camp for [TS]

01:45:30   girls as you the tickets for this event [TS]

01:45:31   but they're going to raise way more [TS]

01:45:32   because they're awesome so please go buy [TS]

01:45:34   ticket to that if you haven't already [TS]

01:45:36   they it's tomorrow night right or [TS]

01:45:38   Wednesday what's Wednesday night [TS]

01:45:40   Wednesday I highly suggest seen them in [TS]

01:45:42   person and you cannot pick a better [TS]

01:45:44   organization to support than AB camp for [TS]

01:45:45   girls so please go buy those last [TS]

01:45:47   tickets I want to see that show sold out [TS]

01:45:49   so thank you everyone for listening [TS]

01:45:51   anything else before we go I think we're [TS]

01:45:54   good I gotta pick titles all right so so [TS]

01:45:57   a deeply embarrassing turn of events I [TS]

01:46:00   looked earlier about halfway through the [TS]

01:46:01   show and I think the show boat was down [TS]

01:46:03   I was wondering if you were even running [TS]

01:46:04   the show but I well I usually never [TS]

01:46:06   touch it in everything just magically [TS]

01:46:07   works just like apples stuff everybody [TS]

01:46:10   know fill our promise like when we [TS]

01:46:11   remember record like we were way worse [TS]

01:46:12   than this yeah we talked all sorts of [TS]

01:46:15   crazy things and it's lots of diversions [TS]

01:46:16   and mark and puts it back together this [TS]

01:46:18   is pretty coherent yeah that we did all [TS]

01:46:19   right but I apologize we're not giving [TS]

01:46:21   you the full experience but this well [TS]

01:46:23   the real reason is that like I'm pretty [TS]

01:46:25   hungry and so I don't want to have to [TS]

01:46:26   add the locks at night yeah so here's [TS]

01:46:29   the thing we didn't have a show bot but [TS]

01:46:31   I have five title options that I will [TS]

01:46:34   regroup and then when I am done you can [TS]

01:46:38   perhaps we will go through again and you [TS]

01:46:39   can cheer for the one you like most on a [TS]

01:46:40   democracy no I tried all into the [TS]

01:46:45   cornfield was option one that's pretty [TS]

01:46:48   good I can't even read my own damn ham [TS]

01:46:49   but I was gonna say you can read that [TS]

01:46:51   what the hell does out of something is [TS]

01:46:53   of controls on the Good Grips of control [TS]

01:46:55   so good rip there we go I put it [TS]

01:46:57   together Oxford good grips of control to [TS]

01:46:59   trademark Akane that's second one [TS]

01:47:00   find a third one a conversation with [TS]

01:47:03   Siri number four practically a point [TS]

01:47:05   release and number five compromise sighs [TS]

01:47:07   I think often to the corn gotta be [TS]

01:47:09   cornfields right no I've clubbed that [TS]

01:47:10   that's a bits of reference to Twilight [TS]

01:47:12   Zone episode I don't know enough about [TS]

01:47:13   to get the right quota on a flub for [TS]

01:47:15   that this is what we see if you don't [TS]

01:47:18   listen why this is that this is what [TS]

01:47:19   happens is every freakin time [TS]

01:47:21   was it was the other okay I'm so good [TS]

01:47:23   grips of control conversation it's eerie [TS]

01:47:25   conversation with Siri is the winner [TS]

01:47:27   that's not bad all right all right do [TS]

01:47:33   you all kind of people you guys want to [TS]

01:47:34   say anything else before we kind of shut [TS]

01:47:35   this all down and go do our thing cool [TS]

01:47:39   awesome thanks everybody for this yeah [TS]

01:47:41   thank you so much would you Justin [TS]

01:47:44   [Applause] [TS]
